Aloha Hui
What a pleasure it is to announce that the Hui has awarded welfare grants totaling $14050 to national nonprofits operating on the island $22625 to organizations in the local community and an amazing $10674548 to organizations located on Schofield Barracks Wheeler AAF Leilehua Schools as well as Mililani Schools We have the fabulous opportunity to touch so many lives here on Oahu not just through our welfare grants but through our scholarship program as well
This yearrsquos scholarship essay asked our applicants to describe a challenge they have faced as well as how they overcame it Our applicants shared their experienc-es and coupled with their academic achievements community and work involve-ment and other extracurriculars we have awarded 26 scholarships to members of the Hui and their children totaling $48500 Providing the scholarships is a lifelong gift Our scholarships help our spouses and families get one step closer to achiev-ing their academic and career goals
Many of the organizations that we have been able to touch this year also focus on the importance of learning and exemplify the value of commitment grit wellness and growth These elements can help us better understand everything around us- from the honu here in Hawaii to crafting an ipu to the feeling of belonging and alo-ha that comes with receiving a welcome lei The recipients of the items and experi-ences supported by our welfare grantsrsquo and scholarships not only benefit those who receive them directly but allow those to share their experiences and work towards bettering society as a whole
With just a little less than two months left in the current board year I encourage all current Hui members to invite someone new to join our club Last month the gov-erning board had voted to provide a prorated membership ($10$15) to new mem-bers through July 31 2018 This is a wonderful chance for someone interested in the spousesrsquo club to attend both of our upcoming luncheons Bloom where you are Planted (April) and Denim and Diamonds Bingo (May) There are also a few re-maining Governing Board positions available for the 2018-2019 board year There still are numerous occasions to become involved in all that the Hui does All someone needs to do is ask ldquoHow can I use myself to serve bestrdquo
Letrsquos finish out our 2017-2018 membership year strong and continue to ldquoMake History Happenrdquo
With Aloha and Gratitude
Andrea
