This past month has been a great one! I’ll have to say that I have been very busy (that’s nothing new) but I have had some very memorable moments over the past few weeks.

It started with our 2nd Annual “Summer Shoot-Out Barrel Race.” This name apparently confused some people (you’ll see the irony in a few moments) due to the fact that Cowboy Mounted Shooting is growing so rapidly around our parts. But, nonetheless, we had a great turnout and a great barrel race on Friday the 2nd of July. The weather was comfortable and the ground was good. Thanks to all those

who came to run for part of the $1,000 added this year. Hopefully we’ll be able to do it again next year!

Mid-July brought our Indiana State NBHA Show - you’ll see some news revolving around this in Clint Van’s Teen Corral this month and we’ll have more coverage in September’s issue. It was a long, hot weekend, but we had a great time with great friends. And I was teared up again this year....seems to be a yearly thing...I qualified to the Finals with my horse Butler. And although we drug a barrel over in the Finals, (very bittersweet) he was only one tenth off of the winning time. He is 19 this year. (Of course, I don’t tell him that!)

And lastly, our month rounded out with a visit by some great people, Bobby and Barb Ruwe. (Bobby graced the cover of July 2010 issue.) The couple came to spend the day and teach us all about Cowboy Mounted Shooting. All I can say is, “I am hooked!” What great ambassadors they are for this growing sport. I can’t wait until the next opportunity comes, I would actually like to try this competitively. I hope that we can recruit Barb into writing a monthly article revolving around this exciting sport. Hopefully next month I can tell you more about our first (and hopefully our second and third) experience with Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

Until next month, enjoy the company of family and friends while riding....and of course..........don’t ever forget to count your blessings on horseback...God Bless and ride safe,Christa Conway

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

July’s Horseshoe Hunt winner is Kim Long. Kim chose to extend her subscription. Congrats, Kim! The horseshoe was on page 26 in the picture of Bobby Ruwe. We will have to remind everyone of the added incentive of a FREE “Horsey-T,” “Horsey-

Hat” or a year’s subscription. This month’s horseshoe hunt will offer the same incentive....the first one to contact us with the location of the Horseshoe in this issue will be our winner. Call or email when you find it and we’ll mention your name in our September 2010 issue and send you a prize if you are the first to contact us! “Happy horseshoe hunting!” (Find the horseshoe to the left somewhere in this issue and email or call us with it’s location! [email protected])

Vick and I walk through the pat-tern together. Vick is riding Barb Ruwe’s horse, Buck, and I am rid-ing my horse, Butler. This was Butler’s first time with the gun shot from his back. He did great!Mom (Debby) takes a shot from the back of Barb’s horse, Buck.

Governor Signs Bills Important to the Horse

Community (Illinois)Springfield, IL – Governor Pat Quinn has signed two bills into law that the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois (HCI) has been instrumental in working to pass and that are important to the equine community in Illinois, according to Frank Bowman, HCI president. Both new laws take effect January 1, 2011.

SB 2632 Public Land - Saddle/Pack Animal Act is now Public Act 96-0985. This bill recognizes horses as users of public lands and their access to state lands and trail systems where currently permitted. The new law requires a posting at the trail head when trails are closed for significant public safety concerns or required maintenance. This bill was sponsored by Senator Gary Forby (D – Benton) and championed in the House by Rep. Brandon Phelps (D – Harrisburg).

SB 2951 Vehicle Code - Bicyclist Safety Act is now Public Act 96-1007. This bill creates protections for bicyclists (and horses as other users of the public right-of-way) from reckless actions by drivers of vehicles on roadways and the throwing of “missiles” from the vehicles. The needed inclusions for the protection of pedestrians, horseback riders and animal drawn vehicles were made at the request of HCI.

“Specific language of the law,” Bowman said, includes “A person driving a motor vehicle shall not, in any reckless manner, drive the motor vehicle unnecessarily close to, toward, or near a bicyclist, pedestrian, or a person riding a horse or driving an animal-drawn vehicle.”

“If a violation results in great bodily harm or permanent disability or disfigurement to another, the person shall be guilty of a Class 3 felony,” Bowman said, quoting the new law.

Additional information on both of these new laws is available from the HCI administration office at 217-585-1600, via email at [email protected] or on the HCI website at www.horsemenscouncil.org

Bowman encourages all horsemen to visit with their state and federal legislators as they make their way through their community this summer, making sure to let them know how important their equestrian lifestyle is to them.

To further the equestrian cause, HCI will be at Conservation World during the Illinois State Fair in August. “We are please to be taking part in a new ‘Share the Trails’ exhibit area and taking the opportunity to allow folks to get up close and personal with a real live horse,” Bowman said. Bob Wagner from Back Country Horsemen will be providing horse packing demos daily at Conservation World.

The Central States Rodeo Association proudly announces that Championship Saddles will be awarded to all Year End CSRA Champions for 2010 thanks to a special partnership with Main Discount Boot & Tack, H & R Dealer. The CSRA Official Saddle Maker is H & R Saddles of Frisco, TX.

Don’t Miss The 2nd Annual Heartbreak Ridge Performance

Horses DerbyWeekend October 29 - November 1!_____________________________________________________

Weekend Includes The First Ohio Reined Cow Horse Futurity, Stallion Stakes, And

Clinic By Sandy Collier!

In only its second year, the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association’s 2010 Heartbreak Ridge Performance Horses Derby is already bigger than the inaugural event with the addition of the Futurity and Stallion Stakes. The weekend will also include two NRCHA-sanctioned shows with $1,000 added each day and a clinic by renowned trainer and only woman to win the Snaffle Bit Futurity, Sandy Collier, October 29-November 1. Hosted by the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s 2009 Affiliate of the Year, Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association, derby weekend culminates a 2010 events season that is on track to pay out more than $38,000 for the year! This is the first trip to Ohio for Collier, who will judge the weekend events and put on a one day clinic. “I’m very excited about coming to Ohio. I’ve never been there and I always look forward to meeting new cow horse enthusiasts,” says Collier. “I enjoy sharing the things that horses have taught me with people that are eager to learn, so I’m looking forward to having a great time there!” It is not too late for more sponsors to get involved, as the naming rights for the futurity is still up for grabs! See www.ohiorcha.com for details. Without its generous sponsors, none of this would be possible. ORCHA would like to thank Just like Starlight, Roseberry Cattle Company, DAC, Rosell Trailer Sales, Heartbreak Ridge Performance Horses, Taylor Performance Horses, McBride Cow Horses, Triple F Ranch, Veal Performance Horses, Rods, and Yellow Creek Ranch for their support. Founded in 2008, the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association is a non-profit affiliate of the National Reined Cow Horse Association. For more information on the ORCHA and event information, check out the Web site www.ohiorcha.com.

Chicagoland Equestrian Life-style Expo set for November 20-21;

Organizers ask horsemen to tell them what they want to learn

Organizers of the third annual Chicagoland Equestrian Lifestyle Expo & Holiday Market (November 20-21, 2010 at the Lake County Expo Center, Grayslake, IL) are asking people from all segments of the horse industry for suggestions on programming.

“We want to hear from competitors, professionals and those who make their living in the business of horses, as well as rec-reational riders and those just getting into horses,” said Joy Mei-erhans, who manages Expo for Horsemen’s Council of Illinois.

“HCI wants to build on the 50 different presentations offered over the two days of last year’s Expo,” Meierhans said, “which covered such wide-ranging topics as ‘What genomics can tell us about health and disease’ and ‘Nutritional product claims vs. fact-based research’ to ‘Overcoming fear by building con-fidence’ and ‘Equestrian travel – discovering the world upon a horse.’”

“As always, Expo will not have horses on site, but it will feature leading trainers, nutritionists, animal scientists, veterinary spe-cialists and researchers in the forefront of equine understand-ing,” Meierhans said.

To see a complete list of last year’s programming, representa-tive of the type of programming Expo will continue to offer in 2010 and in years to come, go to http://www.horsemenscouncil.org/Expo09/ and find the programming plus a list of participat-ing vendors.

Steve Kenyon, communications specialist for the University of Wisconsin’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, called last year’s Expo “the best equestrian education opportunity,” he’d ever seen. Kenyon and his wife participated in a hands-on session learning about leg wraps, “Different wraps for different reasons.”

Suggestions for Expo speakers and topics may be submitted on-line at www.horsemenscouncil.org/expo. The web site also has a place to sign up for “Updates” to be emailed as Expo nears.

In addition to its extraordinary educational emphasis, Expo of-fers shopping for “all things equestrian” across the new build-ing’s 65,000 square feet of exhibit space.

Sponsored by Purina, hours for the all-breed Chicagoland Equestrian Lifestyle Expo & Holiday Market are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets will be available online or at the door: Daily $8, Weekend $14.

Parking is free at the Lake County Expo Center, located west of I-94 at the intersection of Peterson & Midlothian Roads in Grayslake.

As speakers and programming are finalized, information will be placed on the Expo web site accessed through www.horsemen-scouncil.org/expo.

New Rules for Novice Competitors

Starting July 1, novice exhibitors may show any horse in novice, except for the top-10 shows.

You might or might not know, but seven years ago the Show Council was formed for the purpose of expediting show related matters on behalf of the Show Committee. The Council consists of 14 members and includes an AQHA Executive Committee member (Peter Cofrancesco); the chair of the Show Committee, Dr. Jim Heird; four members of the Show Committee, John Pipkin, John Trafton, Peg Edmondson, and Jan Bruner; two Youth Committee Members, Michael Jung, and Nancy Cahill; two Professional Horsemen Committee members Stephanie Lynn and Patti Carter-Pratt; two Amateur Committee members, Dona Johnson and Sherri Tearney; and two Judges Committee members, Joe Carter and Larry Little.

A recommendation was made by the Show Council and then approved by the Executive Committee to allow novice competitors to participate without permits in the novice division at AQHA approved shows. The reasoning behind the decision is to bring more exhibitors to the AQHA show ring.

Beginning July 1, 2010, an exhibitor may show a horse in a novice youth or novice amateur class, with the owner and their immediate family still retaining the ability to show the horse in any class other than the same class as the novice exhibitor. Exhibitors will be required to have a novice amateur or novice youth membership to participate. Memberships can be purchased at the show or prior to the show through AQHA.

All novice eligibility rules still apply.

If novice permits are allowed at one of the top-10 show circuits (listed below), the novice exhibitor can use novice permits to show a non-family owned horse. This ensures a more level playing field at these top circuits. Top-10 circuits are determined by the total number of entries the previous year.

Fred Whitfield Wins the $10,000 in the Battle in the Saddle Match

Roping

The American Quarter Horse Journal, July 16, 2010 -- Professional tie-down roper Fred Whitfield raised the roof in the $10,000 Battle in the Saddle Match Roping July 9 at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. For his efforts, he rode off with a $10,000 check and a pair of commemorative Battle in the Saddle spurs.

Whitfield is an eight-time world champion tie-down roper from Hockley, Texas, with career earnings of more than $2 million and has qualified to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 18 times. His competitor, Hunter Herrin, is from Apache, Oklahoma, and has qualified to the Wrangler National Finals four times in his six-year career, with more than $600,000 in career earnings.

Both Whitfield and Herrin roped off of American Quarter Horses in the Battle in the Saddle Match Roping. Whitfield won with a total time of 121.37 seconds on 10 head and won four of the 10 rounds. Herrin had a total time of 129.90 seconds on 10 head and had the fastest time in the match in six of the 10 rounds. Both ropers were plagued with broken barriers, causing the exciting roping to come down to the 10th round.

To watch highlights from the roping, watch the video brought to you free by America’s Horse TV, click here http://www.americashorse.tv/video.html?video=e79d7eb7-8f12-436d-9565-82543b9147a3.

Battle in the Saddle is a ground-breaking equestrian event showcasing five western disciplines – reining, working cow horse, roping, cutting and ranch horse competition – open to all breeds. Owned by Oklahoma State Fair Inc. and managed by the American Quarter Horse Association, horses and riders compete for an estimated $300,000 in purses, $130,000 in added money.

Battle in the Saddle also played host to the United States Equestrian Federation National Open Reining Championship, the official qualifying event to select the U.S. Equestrian Team that will compete at the upcoming 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky.

Respective discipline classes are endorsed by the following organizations: American Rope Horse Futurity Association, National Cutting Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and Oklahoma Reining Horse Association, and National Reined Cow Horse Association. Competing American Quarter Horses are eligible to earn AQHA points at the competition.

Greetings,INDIANA QUARTER HORSE RACING Fans!

We have alot to share with you about what’s happened recently as well as what’s to come with Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana ...

IN REVIEW :We had a record breaking meet at Indiana Downs in Shelbyville this year with purses exceeding that of any other year and we made history with the first ever ALL QUARTER HORSE RACING DAY with purses over half a million dollars - just for that one day of racing!! According to Indiana Downs management, the attendance for that day exceeded that of any day, EVER!! With a horseman’s picnic, and after hours pizza party, the Quarter Horseman showed that they know how to party! We also enjoyed the entertainment, country recording star Lindzi Parker, who wowed the crowd and made our fans, hers as well! There obviously was alot of behind the scenes work to get this big day organized and become the overwhelming success that it was so, thanks to all who were involved in making our day so special!

We had a “Youth Day” for kids 14-18 who pre registered to come for the entire day, getting an upclose tour of every aspect of Quarter Horse Racing. From the barns with the trainer, to the racing office for the official draw for positions, front side, back side, gates and winner’s circle; these kids got to see first hand what all takes place to get ready for the races. So many of our horsemen participated in making this day special for the kids, but special thanks to Chris Duke, who organized and oversaw the entire event. Another big success for QHRAI, striving to get more involved for the generations to come.

WHAT’S NEW :Racing at Hoosier Park in Anderson will be from July 30th through October 24, this year. We have 27 days of racing planned with Friday post times roughly 9pm and Saturday roughly 5 pm. We will be running for nearly $800,000.00 in stakes races alone! Makes you want to go out and buy a Racing Quarter Horse, doesn’t it? Well there’s an “in training” sale at Hoosier Park

in July and another sale planned for later in the fall, the date not set at this time. Check out the Hoosier Park website, www.hoosierpark.com for updates. You can also go to the QHRAI website, www.qhrai.net to get the latest quarter horse racing info, check out our classified section for you race prospect, get contact information, we also have links to several other related sites!

FROM THE COVER

The 35th annual Lopez & Meyer Quarter Horse Production Sale will be held on

August 21 at the Faith Commission Company at Faith, South Dakota at 1:30 pm

MDT Our sale is mainly weanlings with a few saddle horses and broodmares. Lee

Lopez, Matt & Christine Lopez, and Bob & Karen Meyer have partnered on this sale

for many years, and have been in the horse business for alot longer; we all have cattle

ranches, and appreciate a good cowhorse. We do invite a few friends to sell their

horses in our sale, but it is not an open copnsignment sale.

We have many of the top performance bloodlines in our stallions and broodmares,

including: Grays Starlight, Playgun, Driftwood, Frenchmans Guy, Dual Pep and

many others. A sale feature this year is a fancy sorrel tobiano colt that is a grandson

of High Brow Cat and Dual Jazz. There are four nice geldings in the sale that will be

well represented, all very good performance prospects. Our broodmares are chosen

with conformation, disposition, and athletic ablilty as top priorities. This year’s

sale has a fancy set of weanlings with color and quality. They are raised out on big

pastures.

Horses we’ve raised are proven performers in the rodeo arena from 4-H to PRCA--

as roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling mounts; and alot of just nice ranch and trail

riding horses. Our horses are scattered all over the US, Canada and to the Czech

Republic, and every year over half sell to buyers from past years.

Hope to see you at the sale.

Brent’sBloopersThis month’s pictures we are featuring in

“Brent’s Bloopers” came from the archives.

This cowboy is getting a glimpse of the one view none of us want to see of our horse.......

As always, no one was hurt and all ended well. Just a reminder that barrel racing isn’t as easy as it looks and anything can happen....

Close call.....but we’re told they made a good recovery...

Do you have a good “Blooper” picture you would like to share?Send them in to us at [email protected]

I was just thinking back......This month I found myself thinking back about the “Good Old Days.” I can remember getting to sleep...... and sleep. Anytime I wanted to take a nap, I took a nap. Those really were the “Good Old Days.”It seems like that was forever ago. When actually it was just a year ago (seven in dog years.) A year ago, life as I knew it changed.

-It was the beginning of the end.

For those of you who have been keeping up with my dilemma, you can appreciate my fondness for the past. You have surely figured out by now that it was one year ago that “Princess Annabelle” and all her “precious cuteness” moved in.

Now my memories are filled with sleepless days and horse-show nightmares. I found proof of the torture that the little black bark-box puts me though.Once you see these, you should be able to relate even better to my situation.

Whose idea was it to get a weiner-dog anyway?

Until next month, I’ll be longing for the “Good Old Days,”

It seem as if it wasn’t for bad luck, Toni Martin McCoy wouldn’t have any luck at all. Thankfully, good fortune was waiting for her in Fort Smith, Ark., at the Old Fort Days Futurity, one of the toughest and most prestigious barrel races in the country held annually over Memorial Weekend. .

A blown engine in one truck, a busted oil line in another, the sudden death of a 48-hour-old foal and the devastating loss of her husband’s job last November were just a few of the obstacles that Martin McCoy overcame en route to the Future Fortunes Amateur Championship, that netted her $1,000 and a beautiful Master’s saddle.

I just kept getting these obstacles thrown at me, but I didn’t give up,” said the 42-year-old registered nurse from Longview, Texas. “I just said, ‘I, myself – I am going to do this.’”

Never mind that she had only one more year of barrel racing experience than her horse, Jetolenas Lotta Cash, 4, had years on this earth.

No VacancyAffectionately known as “Lena,” the talented daughter of former leading futurity horse and National Finals Rodeo qualifier Blazin Jetolena originally had a spot in trainer Jana Beam’s futurity string until she came up sore after a futurity in February.

Because of the financial situation, I brought her home to rehab,” said Martin McCoy. “She was going to have to be off three to four weeks. When I started riding her again, I called Jana, but she had to fill that spot in her barn and no longer had room for her.”

After talking to her husband, Flynn, and daughter, Danielle Garrett, who co-owns Lena, Martin McCoy decided to run the mare herself.

I was already paid up,” she said, “so they thought I at least ought to try. So I had five weeks to learn how to ride her.”

Lena, a 14.2 hand, catty-quick horse, was a different beast entirely from Martin McCoy’s comfortable 16-hand, free-running open horse. “She’s really quick and I’m not used to that,” laughed Martin McCoy, who caught the barrel-racing bug from her daughter. “If you drop your hand, you’d better be at your pocket and not looking at it!”

Cowgirl UpThe qualifying round at Old Fort Days on May 27 determined the distribution of the $25,000 Future Fortunes Bonus and Amateur Championship. It would be the biggest race of Martin McCoy’s life.“I was barrel racing so much in my dreams that I didn’t sleep very well,” she quipped. “It’s in the alley way where I tend to get really nervous, where I feel like I’m going to throw up.”

The first barrel at Kay Rodger’s Park is difficult because a fence splitting the alleyway prevents the tradition up-the-middle approach.

“I hugged the inside fence and walked half-way up the alley before I started trotting,” she explained. “I started loping when her head cross the mouth of the alley. I was so focused on getting a perfect first barrel. Everyone had told me it was so important. She turned the nicest first barrel I’d ever made. I sat down a little too soon at the second barrel and I bumped it with my leg. She came back really smooth and you couldn’t really tell I bumped it all at all. She turned a nice third. My whip had got tangled up and I spent the whole run home trying to get it out. Looking back if I had just leaned forward and not done anything, she would have been faster.

“When they announce a 17.360, I almost fell off in the alley. I did a flying dismount and just hugged her. I was so excited; you would have thought I had won the Kentucky Derby!”

Her time qualified her for the Futurity Finals and placed seventh in the $25,000 Future Fortunes pot, earning an additional $1,050 for her and Garrett as well as $300 for Emily Lawson, who bred Lena, and $150 for Sue Rist, who owns Blazin Jetolena.

Danita Design, owned and bred by Charles and Nita Brock, was the highest-placing Future Fortunes horse overall. The daughter of AQHA World Champion Designer Red was ridden by National Cowgirl Hall Of Fame member Kay Young. The win paid $3,656.25 ($2,843.75 as owners and $812.50 as breeders) for the Brocks and $406.25 for Danny Ray, who owned Designer Red.

Page 28

Unforeseen FutureMartin McCoy had purchased Lena, sight-unseen at her dam’s side from David Lawson and his daughter Emily. She initially wanted the breeding to now-deceased Future Fortunes stallion Perks Master that Lawson held and ended up with the mare and foal in a package deal.

Lena’s dam is Roys Cash Toy, a single race winner by Cash Yawl, a stakes-placed full brother to By Yawl that shares much of the same lineage as leading barrel horse sire and former Future Fortunes stallion Dash For Perks. Roys Cash Toy is out of Tina Denise, by the legendary Merridoc.

“She was a little bitty, dainty thing,” Martin McCoy said of Lena. “She didn’t want to be touched. We had to corner her to get her caught. I always liked her attitude and the fire she had in her.”

Lena got her start under saddle with Mike Wiedemeyer, a cutting and reining trainer. After piddling with Lena on the barrels some at a walk and trot, Martin McCoy sought the help of friend and trainer Paula Owens.

“She had her 45 days,” recalled Martin McCoy. “She told me I needed to take her home and turn her out and then pick back up in the fall. She had about 65-70 days off and then I started hauling her to exhibition. The first of November she was running 7/10ths to a second off of Jud Little’s horses that Jolene Stewart was riding.”

Martin McCoy called Owens’ daughter Janna Beam about possibly riding Lena in the Juvenile at the BFA’s World Championship Futurity. Beam ended up taking Lena and placing in the second round at the Oklahoma City event.

Ironically, it was at Oklahoma City where Martin McCoy sat in her first Master’s saddle.

“I told my husband, when the financial situation gets a little better next year, I’ll get one. Now, I’ve won one!” she laughed.

The saddle and $1,000 Future Fortunes Amateur bonus played a big part in her decision to ride Lena herself at Old Fort Days.

“I’m really thankful that no one else rode her now!” she exclaimed. “I’m just a novice. I haven’t been running barrels but five-and-a-half years. Amateurs like me wouldn’t have a chance against the pros if it weren’t for things like this. I’m so thankful they have the Future Fortunes program, especially for the Amateurs. People need to look really hard at the Future Fortune stallions and colts. They have so many benefits.”

Good FortuneIn addition to her $2,050 Future Fortunes bonus, Martin McCoy and Lena finished 29th in the Futurity Finals for $2,175.

“My nerves got the better of me,” she said. “The contractor had brought in some stock and she got very nervous. She really hasn’t been hauled much, except when Jana had her. When she got nervous, I got nervous.”

The weekend still seems surreal to her.

“I never saw it coming,” she said. “I didn’t figure I had a snowball’s chance. She was behind. I was trying to learn how to ride her in five weeks.

“Honestly, I have to thank the Lord. We’ve had such a horrible year. I cried when I won it. I’ve never won anything like that. I’ll never forget that . . . ever!”

The 2010 National Pole Bending Championship Show returned to Miller Coliseum in Murfeesboro, TN for the second straight year, June 11 & 12, 2010. This annual event was packed with good fun

and some of the best pole bending horses in the world. You could not witness a pole bending competition like this just anywhere. Congress & World Champion pole horses were running 19 second poles like it was “no big deal” over the two day competition.

Well Deserved RecognitionPole bending horses tend to be so underrated and they rarely get enough praise and acknowledgement for their talents and accomplishments. While most riders that compete in the “speed-events” focus on barrel racing (and a growing majority have never even tried their hand at pole bending) there are still many who take their pole bending very seriously. And there are many horses that will get your attention when they make that first turn and start the weave. Needless to say, with pole bending usually overshadowed by barrel racing coverage, it

is nice to have a show that is solely devoted to this outstanding class of pole bending horses!

Skilled AthletesMost will admit that pole bending is not an easy event to master. It takes some serious skill from rider and horse to run a 19 second pole pattern. While barrel racing has only 3 barrels to maneuver around, pole benders have to avoid six poles while passing by them a total of four times and still shut the clock off! The talent it takes for these pole bending teams to make consistent 19 second runs - that are clean - .....you just have to witness it to appreciate the skill, finesse and timing of these athletes.

Hall of FameFriday evening the NPBA hosted the Hall of Fame dinner. Steve Ramsey was Master Of Ceremonies and al-ways did a fine job. Everyone enjoyed watching and listening to their beloved family member tell stories of why they were bestowed this honor. The Hall of Fame inductees included the great horse, Teddy Terrific. (Left)

The CompetitionThings were rolling bright and early Saturday morning. The competitors could feel the excitement in the air. The weather cooperated and was absolutely great for the entire weekend.

The first day was filled with good runs (and some not so good.) Brandon Riley and Haley Jos Charm, 2009 AQHA World Champion Amateur Pole Bender, was one team that claimed a good run on Saturday when they finished the first go of the Open with a win in the 1-D.

Charlie Peoples and Lightning Stars N Bars, Congress Junior Pole Bend-ing Champion, had a flawless run in the NPBA Slot Race to take him to the win-ners circle. The hi-light of the show were the pony pole benders. I mean these kids and their ponies meant business when it came to running the poles! They all received tro-phies and T-shirts. The young horses in the Futurity were tough, but Nathan Peoples & Lightning Bayou put a run down no one was gonna catch. He also won an additional $250 dollars from the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association for being the highest placing Ky-bred in that go-round. For the second straight year Glen Law showed off his skills for starting young horses. His mare, Lightning Bella, day-lighted the field in the Kindergarten Futurity sponsored by Jud Little Ranch. The pair also won the 2nd go of the Futurity with another impres-sive run. Glen took home a $250 bonus from the KYQHA for riding the highest placing KY-bred in the 2nd go-round..

Great Time & Great TimesAll in all the weekend went well...some riders didn’t get the breaks that they wanted while others did. Saturday evening rid-ers schooled their horses in the arena and by Sunday morning the game faces were on.

The Open 1-D got super tough! Riders had their horses dialed in...19 second runs kept changing the leader board. When the dust had all settled Chuck Givens and his AQHA World Cham-pion mare, Sugar Rullah, had the winning two day total to claim the NPBA Championship. I don’t know what was hotter the tem-peratures in TN or the times that some of these great horses ran in Miller Coliseum.

That’s All FolksAnother NPBA Championship show came to a close. All had a good time, survived the heat and hopefully took home a memory or two.

Thank YouWe would like to thank all the spon-sors of this show. To all the vol-unteers that took time out to set up a pole, help in the office, work the arena gate, etc. We are grateful and appreciate everything you did to help make the show run smoothly. We look forward to 2011...please keep checking the website for up-coming changes in the future and details for the next years show.

Last & most important thought…Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Have you ever had a horse come to you with a barn name you just couldn’t bring yourself to use? For whatever reason, you just had to come up with a better name, a more fitting name,a prophetic name. (And I mean prophetic in the sense that -hopefully it will ring true in time...ie: “Winner,” “Speedy” or “Champ”)

Well, I know I have had horses come to our barn and immediately they got a new name. Most of the time it reflects the personality of the horse, or the expectations I have for the new prospect.

I was listening to the radio the other day and heard a message about Jacob. I would like to share part of it with you.

The name Jacob meant “to deceive.” And it is ironic that in order for his name to ring true, Jacob lied to his father, Isaac by telling him that he was Esau. Jacob did receive his father’s blessing that was intended for Esau. (See Genesis Chapter 27)

Jacob then dealt with others deceiving him, such as Laban, Rachel’s father. Jacob worked seven years for Laban in order to marry Rachel and was given Leah’s hand instead. He then had to work seven more years for Laban in order to marry Rachel. (Genesis 29)

Later on in Genesis 32:22-29 Jacob wrestles with God “until daybreak.” His hip is dislocated in the struggle and then Jacob asks God to bless him. God (the man) asks Jacob “What is your name?”

Jacob replies with his name, “Jacob” (which means deceiver.)

Then God gives Jacob a new name. He says, “ Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with men and with God and have overcome.”

God gave Jacob a new name....but only when Jacob finally admitted to God who he really was. WOW.

Jacob had to speak the words....and I know it was saying his name, but I think there is more to this than just a name.

It made me think of who I am. (Not what my name means, but who I am.) Who is the person that only I know? The person that I don’t want others to know about. What is it that I struggle with ? What is it that you struggle with? Our weaknesses, our faults that we know are there, we just don’t want to admit it to anyone, especially God.

Oh, but HE already knows our name (identity)...he knows who we really are. **What he wants to be able to do is to give us a new name (identity)....the name (identity) he has intended for us to have all along.

In order for him to give us our new name (identity), we have to come to him and tell him our “name.”

I hope this is making sense. I am trying to fit a lot into this month, but this really hit me hard. I hope I can put it on paper so that it makes sense to you.

I tried to think of it like this....When we get a new horse in the barn....I tend to have visions of this new horse being the next great thing. I can see all the potential in this horse when it is playing in the pasture...you know what I mean? I can see the ability and just know that we’ll be winning barrel races before you know it. I have high hopes for this horse, and if all goes well, we’ll be NFR bound before you know it. But, this new horse has no idea what I see him as. He has no idea what kind of transformation is about to (or not to) take place. He has no idea what he could become given the chance and some effort on his part.

Great example for this to come together....Take Scamper...most of us have heard the story of how Scamper was passed over and had become a feed lot horse, that he was broncy, etc. It took one little girl, pouring her heart into him for him to realize his potential....what he was destined to be. She saw in him a champion, just like God sees something in ALL of us that only he can bring out. Just like Scamper didn’t know who he was meant to be until Charmayne “changed his name”....we will never know what we are truly meant to be until we allow God to change our name.

God can take you from “Afraid” to “Confident” - From “Selfish” to “Giving” - From “Angry” to “Happy”....................

Until next month....

Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

This month we decided to have a little fun with our “Mystery of the Month” and try something a little different.

This set of “Cowboy Legs” belongs to a particular cowboy who volunteered his time and his legs to a good cause last month. Can you tell us who these legs belong to?

Tell us whose legs these are and a little about the cowboy and you can be our August Winner!

Tell us the identity correctly and win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource or a “Horsey-T!”

Send us in your pictures from years past of a cowboy or cowgirl that someone else may be able to identify to win a Free subscription or “Horsey T.”

And...KEEP those pictures coming!!! I’m running very low on the mystery pictures......and we don’t want to run out of fun. Whose picture would you love to see in here? Mail it in to us! We’ll return any originals that are sent regular mail....or email them to us at [email protected]. Good Luck!

Jeff Finn and Todd Adair are the winner’s of our July issue’s Mystery of the Month. Jeff & Todd both correctly identified the brothers, Bob and Tom Hess.

The picture on the left was taken in 1955. The two boys were working together, breaking a pony at their home near Vincennes, Indiana. The picture on the right was taken of the brothers loaded up and ready to head to the Knox County Fair in August of 1965.

Both Bob and Tom Hess are still very active in the barrel horse world. Bob is an AQHA World Champion and is the current Indiana NBHA State Director as well as one of NBHA’s Regional Executives.

Tom is a recent NBHA State 1D Champion in the Senior Division and both of the brothers have children that also compete.

If you have a picture of a Cowgirl or Cowboy that you would like to see featured as our Mystery of the Month. Send it via email to us at [email protected] or mail it to us at 12601 S. CR 200 W., Muncie, IN 47302. (ALL originals will be returned.)

Keep’em comin’! Thanks to those who have sent in Mystery Photos!
