    PETTISVILLE While the Antwerp Ar-

chers were ring blanks during the third

period, the Pettisville Blackbirds were busybuilding a rally-proof lead that turned into

a decisive 65-57 win in The Birdcage.

Leading by just three at the half, theBlackbirds blew the game open in thethird, thanks to a 17-8 run that put the

    Birds on top to stay.

Eli King led Pettisville with 13 points,

while Jeremy Mann had 12, and Korben

Rychener 10. Jacob Reyes and Noah Millereach put in 8 points, Josh Liechty had 7,

Austin Dykstra 5 and Tate Kauffman 2

    SCORING BY QUARTER:

    Antwerp 14 12 8 23 - 57

PIONEER - Ahh...for just four quarters

of consistent offense. The North Central Eagles and the Ant-

werp Archers went at it on December 21,

and it was looking to be a classing nailbiter in the early goings of the game. The

Eagles hung with the Archers through therst two periods, but come the third, the

Eagles offense went straight down the por-celain chute. After posting 23 points in the

rst half, North Central could only manage

14 in the second, allowing a close game to

turn into a 51-37 defeat.Chase Legacy hit for 9 points to lead

    the Eagles. Clayton Ferguson, Branden

Turner and Dylan Hutchison each landed8 points, and Ethan Douglass and Jordan

    Reeves each had 2.

MONTPELIER - When Tim Nicely took

the reins at Montpelier, nobody told theguy it was going to be a smooth sail. Thatbecame self evident on December 20.

The right people, in the right place,at the right time usually means success.

Factor a wrench in the works though,

and everything goes down the drain. Onthis occasion, the wrench was the shoot-

ing hands of the Lady Locos...hands thatseemed to be intent on forming a bricklay-

ers union. The Lady Locos shot 26 per-cent from inside the arch, 25 percent from

    three-ville, and a horric 14 percent from

the line, rolling out a red carpet that the

Archbold Lady Streaks were happy to wipetheir feet on, before taking it to a 61-23win over Montpelier.

Hannah Blake was the only Lady Locoin double digits with 10 points. Audrey Pir-

tle had 5 points, and 2 points apiece were

allotted to Haley Suffel, Bre Stein, BayleeHageman and Regan Steffes.

    SCORING BY QUARTER:

    Archbold 19 20 12 10 - 61Montpelier 4 6 7 6 - 23

The Hilltop Lady Cadets put together agreat team effort, and were able to capi-

talize on Tinoras inability to score, as theHilltop would go on to win the contest by a

    margin of 48-39.

The Cadets took little time to take con-trol of the game. Not only was Hilltop able

to score 17 in the rst quarter, but theirdefense set the tone for the contest, only

allowing their opponents to score ve pointin the rst period of action. The Rams

would take 47 shots in the contest, and

were only able to get nine of those shots tofall. That equates to a 19% shooting per-

centage. The Cadet offense would take a step

back in the second quarter, only able to

muster seven points. However it would beno-harm no-foul as the Hilltop defense

would stie the Tinora offense again, al-lowing seven points as well, which all al-

lowed them to maintain a 12 point lead athalftime, leading 24-12.

Tinora shrunk the Hilltop lead by apoint in the third quarter of action, out-

scoring the Cadets 8-7, narrowing the lead

to 11. After three complete quarters of ac-tion, the scoreboard read 31-15 in favor of

Hilltop. Both squads offenses would come alive

in the nal quarter, scoring a combined 36points. The lead that the Cadets had built

early in the contest would prove to be vital.

The Rams would outscore them 19-17 inthe nal quarter, but it would be too little

to late for the Rams, and the Cadets wouldclose out the night with the 48-39 victory.

The Cadets were 13/31 on two point at-tempts and 3/4 on three point attempts for

a total shooting percentage of 46%. Hilltop

also maintained a 59% free throw percent-age, making 13 of their 22 attempts on the

evening. The Cadets also out reboundedthe Rams 33-26.

Leading the way in point totals on the

night for the Cadets was Hannah Bleikampwho banked 13 points on the night. She

was followed by Emily Armbruster withnine, Destiny Denton and LeAnn Joost

both nished with eight, Bailey Funkhous-er and Kailey Creamer each contributed

three a piece, and Cierra Grant and KaylaSettlemire rounded out the Cadet scoring

    with two each.

With the win, the Cadets on now 6-1 onthe 2013-2014 campaign.

Lady Cadets Take Advantage Of Poor Shooting

Night By Tinora, Come Away With A Win

Archbold Lady Blue Streaks HandMontpelier An Embarrassing Setback

PAULDINGThe Montpelier Lady Lo-cos and Paulding Lady Panthers decided

that four quarter were not enough, andwent in to overtime to decide a winner. The

Locos would fall short in the extra period, and would be defeated by a score of 64-56

    on December 17.

Montpelier would be outscored by thePanthers 17-12 in the opening quarter of

action, but the Panther lead would not lastlong.

The Locos offense, lead by HannahBlake found its groove in the second quar-

ter, outscoring their opponents 13-5, andtaking the over the lead by the time thehalftime buzzer sounded. As the teams

headed in to the lockers rooms for the half-time intermission, Montpelier owned a 25-

22 lead over Paulding. The Locomotive lead expanded in the

third period, with Hannah Blake and Bay-

lee Hageman doing their part to help theMontpelier cause, as the duo would score

23 and 18 points on the respectively on thenight. By the end of the quarter, the Locos

would see their lead grow to nine points, leading 43-34 after three quarters of ac-

    tion.

    Although the Locos had outscored

the Panthers 31-17 in the previous twoquarters, Pauldings three point prowess

would keep them in the game. The Pan-thers were 53% for three pointers on the

night, making eight for 15 shots from be-hind the arc. It was a very different tale for

the Locos who were only able to make one

three pointer out of their 13 attempts for7%. The momentum had shifted in favor

of the Panthers. Only nine points wouldgo on the board in the fourth quarter for

the Locomotives, while Paulding would goon to double that, putting up 18 points.

As the fourth quarter came to a close, theteams were knotted at 52 and headed forovertime.

The Panthers would dominate the ex-tra period, as Paulding would grab the lead

early in overtime and never lose it. After atough battle, the Locos would end up fall-

    ing 61-56.

Blakes 23 points lead all scorers. TheLocos scoring was followed next by Hage-

man with 18, Maddie Richmond with ve,Haley Suffel and Malorie Yagelski both

were able to score three, and Marinna Mer-cer and Regan Steffes both ended the con-

    test with two points.

The 20th annual Walsh Jesuit Ironman

National Tournament is considered to beone of the most grueling and difcult com-petitions in the nation. Wrestlers from 32

states from across the country send wres-

tlers to the Ironman. Wauseon sent tworepresentatives to the tournament, and

for the second year in a row had a wrestlerplace.

Aaron Schuette (170 lbs), the state run-ner up in his weight class last year, and

Wade Hodges (132 lbs), a two time state

placer, both entered in to the tournamentas 11 seeds in their weight classes. Both

guys competed in the tournament lastyear said wrestling coach Mike Ritter

both nished with 1 win and 2 losses, sothey knew what to expect going in to their

    second time around.

After losing a 5-1 decision in the rstround to Pittsburg Catholic Centrals Kyle

Coniker, Schuette would go on to win twostraight consolation matches. His rst win

was a 9-3 decision against Loveland OhiosJames Caniglia, and the second was a rst

period pinfall of Sam Atkinson from Park-

ersburg South, West Virginia. Schuettesday came to an end when he suffered a 7-4

loss to Tracey Eitel of Allen Texas. [Aar-ons] kind of a light 170 pounder and it

really showed at this tournament. Ritter

said He wrestled well, but the size differ-ence at this level of competition will take

its toll on you. Hes got a decision to maketo continue to compete at 170 or drop to

160.Wade Hodges had a very impressive

performance in the tournament. He won

his rst match against Dom Girannagelifrom Franklin Regional, Pennsylvania with

a second period pin fall. Hodges next oppo-nent was Will Crisco, a nationally ranked

    wrestler from Wyomining Seminary in

Pennsylvania. Hodges was able to pick upa 4-2 decision, moving him on to the nextround where he would again face anoth-

er nationally ranked opponent, this time

against Bryce Meredith from Cheyenne,Wyoming. This match would end up with

Hodges pinning Meredith, and moving onto become the rst Wauseon wrestler to be-

come a semi-nalist in the Ironman tour-nament. In the semi-nal match, Hodges

was matched up against #3 seeded Brock

Ervin from Union County, Kentucky, andwas defeated by a 4-1 decision, which was

as close as 2-1 in to the third period. Inthe consolation semi-nal match Hodges

went up against fellow Ohio wrestler BrentMoore from St. Paris Graham. The contest

went in to overtime, but Hodges was de-

feated on a controversial call by the ofcial.90% of the time when we see those exact

same situations, the wrestlers are allowedto continue the scramble until someone

clearly establishes control. That was notthe case in this match said Coach Ritter.

Hodges would be defeated in the fth place

match by a decision of 5-0, giving him the6th place nish in his weight class.

This is the second year weve hadwrestlers compete at the Ironman and the

second year we had a 6th place nisher.

Ritter said. Last year, Zane Krall n-ished 6th and he wound up an Ohio State

Champion. Hopefully, history can repeatitself for Hodges and some other of our

wrestlers, including Schuette who was aState Runner-Up. We need these kind of

high level, national tournaments to get our

kids ready for the Ohio State Tournament.Well continue to apply for kids to compete

at this tournament and hopefully crown achampion.
