    Foreword

The great scholar Sheikh Abdul Muezz Abdul Salttar is well known in the

Arab countries. After having specialized in the Holy Quran He acquired

deep knowledge in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Hehad some rare opportunities to mingle with the different nations of the

Middle East in the early days of the Palestine Conflict. He was the envoy

of Egypt to mediate between the fighting groups and the public there.

This gave him a strong motivation to study the three nations namely

    Muslims, Christians and Jews.

He is an expert educationist, critic, and a talented orator. We first met in

the Institute of religious studies in Qatar, where I was a student in 1971.

His eloquent speech in Arabic, and rational approach to the subject

delighted me. He was then the Inspector of Religious studies in the

Ministry of Education, in the State of Qatar.

In the last February, I visited Sheikh at home and we discussed many

subjects of mutual interest. When you sit with him and listen to the facts

he submits in various subjects a new light will come to your mind. You

will feel that a door to knowledge is opened in front of you. When at last

unwillingly I left Sheik, he presented one of his latest books to me.

Going through the chapters I found that this is a research on the threeHoly Scriptures which deserves to be published in the international

language of English to convey the idea to as many people as we can. In

my last visit on September I asked for his permission to render the book

into English, then he told me that a translation in English was already

    available.

Sister Dr. Nancy Eweiss prepared the translation and Sister Maryam

Elbenhawy edited it. They have worked hard to render the ideas of the

great author to English. Sheikh is a talented Arabic Scholar with highcommand on vocabulary, and literature. It is not easy to translate his

writings as they keep the high standard of Arabic literature.

My role was confined to the final touch to the translation and change

some words and phrases to make the text closer to the reader. I have tried

the best to reduce brackets and additions in the translation of the meaning

of the Quranic verses, as it is the latest method adopted by modern

scholars. From among the eight known translations of the meaning of

Quran, selection was made to get the best.

The author used the method of revision to make the idea clear to the

readers. Some of these portions were abridged by the translator as the

meaning was grasped from the brief form of the text. In this case I have

checked to see whether any important point was missing in this briefing,

and tried to add it to the translation.

We pray that this humble work is accepted by the Almighty as a service

to truth helping the impartial readers to find and follow the straight path. I

acknowledge the encouragement of the author as well as the honest

cooperation of my Secretary to finish the work as soon as possible. May

Allah the Beneficent reward all for their services.

In the Name of Allah (1)the Most Beneficent

    The Most Merciful

IntroductionAll praise is due to Allah; and blessings and peace be upon His

messenger and servant, Muhammad, the leader of messengers, and the

mercy bestowed to the mankind; upon his family and companions and

whoever follows his guidance until the Day of Resurrection.

As soon as the September 11th

attack took place on the twin towers of the

World Trade Center in New York, and the Pentagon the President of the

USA rushed to hold the Muslims responsible for the attack, calling themterrorists; and so did Berlusconi the Italian PrimeMinster, who alsohurried to assure the same thing. They, like many others, announced that

at this point of history, the West must impose its civilization on the

Muslims, a call earlier raised by Manheim Begin, the Israeli Prime

Minster who also said that the Israelis must destroy what is known as the

Islamic and Arab Civilization to establish on its remains the Hebrew

    Civilization.

The United States of America in its arrogance wasted no time to work oneducating and disciplining the Arab and Islamic countries to change their

religion and alter their syllabus claiming that Islam calls for fanaticism

and is based on terrorism, and therefore they must drain all the sources of

Islamic culture and thoughts and remove all the verses of the Qur'an

which call for resistance and Jihad against dictatorship and slavery.

This matter is not a secret anymore; rather it is well known that the

Governments of the Arab and Islamic countries received official requests

to make these changes in the syllabus. Israel and America found it a goodchance to omit all the verses which talk about the Jews: that they always

break all covenants made with others and of them being treacherous, and

their hatred and cunning against the Muslims and other nations and the

ruin they caused in the earth._____________________________________________________________________

    (1) Allah is the proper name of God, and is not used to denote any other being.

Therefore it is retained in translations to other languages. It is used by Arabs both

Muslims and Christians alike. This term will be usedthroughout this book withouttranslation to denote the One and Only True God, Lord of mankind.

In 2002 the conference of the 'Assembly of Islamic Research' was held in

Egypt to stop this campaign which describes Islam as being a terrorist

religion and the Muslims as terrorists; and to prove that Islam carries a

message of peace, and that it only raises a weapon when it is forced to.

The members of the Assembly from all over the Islamic world presented

several research papers assuring this fact, and that Islam is a religion of

peace that reconciles with the unbelievers, and does not attack anyone

who is at peace with the Muslims and would only fight those who wage

    war against them.

I was horrified to see that we, the Muslims, are confined to the position of

an accused who needs to defend himself; when a Muslim firmly

believes that his mission on earth is to spread peace, as the Prophet (p)

said: "Muslim is the one with whom people feel safe fromabuse bymouth or hand; and a believer is one whom people trust on their blood

and property". (Reported by Imam at-'Tirmidhi).

Islam maintains that people are free to choose their belief and religion, as

Allah the Almighty says: "Not upon you (Muhammad) is their guidance,

but Allah guides whom He wills."(2:272).

Allah (Glorified be He) says: "...your duty is only to convey and on Us is

the reckoning."(13:40), and says:"So remind them (O Muhammad), you

are only the one who reminds. You are not a dictator over them.

However, he who turns away and disbelieves, then Allah will punish him

with the greatest punishment. Verily, to Us will be their return; then

indeed, upon Us will be their reckoning". (88:21-26).

As Islam spread through various countries and lands, it gave the people

freedom to choose their belief; Muslims never demolished a church,

synagogue or temple. They considered their duty to protect their subjectsand defend them having the same rights and duties as the Muslims, and

never usurped a land, property or abused people's honor or freedom.

The most clear evidence of the respect of Islam to those who embrace

other religions, is that it allows a Muslim to marry a Christian or a Jewish

woman, as he believes in their Books which were revealed to Moses and

Jesus; thus uniting the three religions under the same roof. Difference of

belief would not affect the stability of thismarried life, and even if they

see it as a combination of belief and disbelief. We would only repeatwhat Allah the Almighty says: "Say: O people of the Scripture (Jews and

    7

Christians)! Do you criticize us for no other reason than that we believe

in Allah, and in (the revelation) which has been sent down to us and inthat which has been sent down before, and that most of you are

    disobedient (to Allah)?"(5:59).

I felt really frustrated to see that our Book which calls for peaceandguides to the truth and the straight path, is being accused unjustly, andthe Torah which is full of grudge and hatred to mankind, negligence and

violation of blood, soul, property and human rights, and even includes

false stories of genocides committed by Prophets, who are meant to be

sent by God for the guidance of mankind, is regarded as a Holy Scripture.

The Torah is full of narrations of immoral acts, incest and adultery, to the

extent that the British House of Commons submitted a request to the

British Government in 1968, requesting the prohibition of teaching theHoly Scripture to the school pupils as it corrupts their morals.( Al Hayat

    Newspaper, Beirut, 1968).

I thereupon, presented a suggestion to the 'Assembly of the Islamic

Research' to form a global committee of the most eminent scholars and

thinkers, Muslims and non Muslims to study the Divine Scriptures 'the

Quran, the Torah and the Gospel, in order to find out the source of these

calls for hatred and enmity, and which scripture is the one that supports

    terrorism and evil on earth.

The members of the Assembly welcomed the suggestion, but the

administration found that it would require a lot of money and effort inContacting several Muslim associations, universities and assemblies

which surpassed its abilities at that time. I hoped then that some of ourcolleagues in that assembly would take over the task, but since I found no

    one ready to do it, for various reasons, I decided to take it over myself;

meaning to draw a comparison in this book between the Glorious Qur'an,

which leads to truth and straight path, and the alleged Holy Scripture, to

reveal where hides terrorism and violence on earth, and where is thehatchery of evil and instability.

We shall start with the Qur'an and then moving on to the Holy Scripture,

putting special emphasis on the Torah.

    Preface

Religion and Human LifeOur life is formulated by a number of beliefs and principles that people

believe in and follow in the course of their daily lives. These principles

determine their trend in life and control their attitudes and actions. If

those beliefs and principles are righteous, then their whole life will be

virtuous; otherwise, their lives will be a source of damage to them and to

    others.

Peoples' lives reflect what is in their hearts, and their outward behavior is

a mere reflection of their inward belief, whether rightly guided or not.Allah the Almighty speaks the truth as He says: "Verily Allah will not

change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves ."

    (13:11).

And says: "And by the soul and Him Who perfected it; Then He showed it

what is wrong for it and what is right for it; Indeed he succeeds who

purifies his own self And indeed he fails who instills it( with corruption)"

    (91: 7-10).

Sociologists evaluate individuals and nations according to the beliefs andprinciples. This is actually true. Take for example Belqeis, the queen of

Saba, in spite of all her wisdom and reasoning, she did not accept the call

of Prophet Solomon to believe in Allah as her people were actually

disbelievers. The Qur'an says concerning this point: "And that which she

used to worship other than Allah has prevented her (from believing), for

she was of a disbelieving people."(27:43). But when she realized and had

firm conviction in what the truth was, she said: "My Lord! Verily, I have

wronged myself and I submit, together with Solomon, to Allah, the Lordof mankind." (27:44).

Religion and belief in God is part of the human instinct. It is impossible

to find a human being who has no religion (1) as man naturally tries to

reach to his God and Creator and in moments of distress, seeks His help.

It may not be very clear at moments of welfare, but it is very clear at

other times when man is facing affliction and hardship.

    ________________________________________________________

1 Even if the person is an atheist, disbelief in itself is a religion, i.e. a belief that God does not exist, soit is still a belief even if it is a false one.

Allah the Almighty says:"He it is Who enables you to travel through land and sea, till when youare in the ships and they sail with them with a favorable wind and they

are glad therein, then comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them

from all sides, and they think that they are encircled therein, they invokeAllah, making their Faith pure for Him alone, saying: If You deliver us

from this, we shall truly be of the grateful."(10:22).

This resorting to God and pleading for His help and protection is a natural

instinct and real part of belief, which is very clear as we said before, at

moments of distress and affliction. But when this moment is over, man

(unfortunately) forgets what he was calling for, and associates other

deities with God! Regarding this issue, the Quran says: "And when harmtouches you upon the sea, those that you call upon vanish from you except

Him (Allah). But when He brings you safely to land you turn away (from

Him). And man is ever ungrateful."(17:67), and says: "But when We have

removed his affliction from him, he passes on his way as if he had never

invoked Us for an affliction that touched him! "(10:12). We can then say

that belief is an intrinsic part of human nature, supported by reason and

    weakened due to man's forgetfulness.

    The Origin of Allah's Religion

Reason and natural instinct are then not sufficient to force people to abideby the truth and follow the right path. People started to dispute and

practice a lot of injustice against each other and hence needed Divine

guidance to put them back on the right path. Allah the Almighty sent the

prophets with His book, to deliver them from darkness into light and

guide them to the truth and the right path. Allah (Glorified be He) says in

the Qur'an: "Mankind was one community, then Allah sent Prophets, as

bringers of glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent theScripture with truth to judge between people in matters wherein they

differed. And only those to whom (the Scripture) was given differedconcerning it after clear proofs had come unto them out of jealous

animosity among themselves. Then Allah by His Leave guided those who

believed to the truth of that wherein they differed And Allah guides whomHe wills to a Straight Path "(2:213).

This verse gives a clear picture of religion, adhering to it, and the

revealed Book, and the guidance of the mankind.

    Man is Religious by Nature

    Mankind was one community

Allah has created mankind as one nation closely related to each other,

which is an indispensable necessity, in order for them to fulfill the naturalneeds and welfare of mankind, as no one individual can live on his own,

supplying his own needs of food, clothing, housing, protection and health.

This entails theneed for agriculture, industry etc., as the individual'senergy is limited and his demands are numerous, people need each other

and live together by the guidance of reason and instinct, and they helped

each other according to what sociologists say: "Man is naturally

sociable." This notion is expressed in the Divine Hadith narrated by the

Messenger of Allah in which Allah the Glorified says: "1 created My

servants inclining to truth, worshiping none but Me, Satan turned themaway from the right religion making them love their lust and raised their

selfishness and so they differed each other and became aggressive".

    (Reported by Bukhari, and Muslim)

    Different by Nature

Even though people naturally seek cooperation, relationship and unity,

they are also naturally different in their capabilities, desires, and talents.

Therefore, they had to be different in their opinions and desires, and gothrough clashes of interests, and differ among themselves. Natural human

instinct then, which unified them, is not capable of sorting out their

disputes, so they needed Divine guidance to guide them to the right path,

to remove causes of their differences, and also to put them back on the

right track as they were, before Satan turned them away from the right

    religion.

    Allah sent His Prophets

Allah has sent His Prophets with glad tidings and warnings to call them

to their welfare and enjoin them to do what is good and forbid them from

evil deeds. They are sent with the glad tidings to those who respond, that

they have a good life on earth, and great rewards in the Hereafter. They

warn those who stand against the path of Allah, in which they will face

disgrace in this world and severe torment in the Hereafter. This shows the

Grace and Mercy of Allah and His forgiveness to His servants no matter

how much they transgressed among themselves, as Allah the Almighty

says: "Should We then turn away the Reminder (this Qur'an) from you,

because you are a transgressing people?" (43:5). This tone of rescue to

the servants is clear in the words of Allah. "Then Allah sent the prophet".

And the prophets started to call people to the right path, piety, belief and

doing good deeds in this life to get their reward in the Hereafter, while

the Scripture was sent with them to be their reference.

With them He sent the Scripture

This conjunction 'and' coming after sending the Prophets denotes several

things, the most significant of which are:

    1. The message of each Prophet precedes the revelation of the book. They

start by calling people to follow what is good for them, and warn them

against what is harmful, give them good tidings, for those who believe,

and warn the disbelievers of punishment. Following that, is the revelation

of the book, to be their reference and guidance to the truth which allMessengers and Prophets were sent with.

    2. It denotes that Allah has sent a book with each Prophet.

    3. lt also denotes that this book, is the same one, as Allah the Almighty

says: "with them", i.e. the Prophets (plural), the Scripture (singular). This

signifies that 'One Book' was revealed to all Prophets, and each one of

them had a book written in his people's mother tongue, reflecting a copy

of the original Scripture, as the Prophet (p) said: "No Prophecy ever

existed, except that it followed the example of the previous ones".1 'This

is assured by the words of Allah Glorified be He: "And with them He sent

    the scripture in truth".2(2: 213)

    In Truth(2)

'ln Truth' is also a proof that this 'Book' is the same, as it is revealed by

your God in truth. Truth in itself can only be one, so it is only the names

of the Books that were different, for specific reasons. Each of the Torah,

the Gospel, and the Qur'an were given these titles, even though the

content is the same, due to the difference in the mother tongues of various

nations, and the way they expressed themselves, or due to the essence of

the 'truth' that they differed about, concerning the worldly matters and

those of the Hereafter and the clear path that they wasted. Therefore, the_____________________________________________________________________'This is part of a hadith narrated by 'Utbah bin Ghazwan, and reported by Imam Ahmed in hisMosnad (collection of hadith). It means that the guidance that each Prophet came with, is likea copy from the guidance of the previous ones, based on the truth. Imam al-Shawkanireported the hadith in his interpretation of the verse: "Nothing is said to you (O Muhammad(p) except what was said to the Messengers before you". (41: 43).

2 The origin of the word 'truth' in Arabic means, the fixed and stable matter, as in the verse:'And Allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth," (45:22), i.e. according to a fixed

system , and a law, that guarantees their stability.

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    12

Book of Moses (peace be upon him) is called 'The Torah" (i.e. the code of

life), according to which Allah made things lawful and others unlawful

for them such as usury, oppression, corruption etc.

The Book of Jesus (peace be upon him) is called 'The Gospel' (i.e. the

glad tidings), as Jesus is giving glad tidings of the kingdom of Allah, anda Messenger who will come after him, his name being 'Ahmad' (the spirit

of truth) (1). The Book of Muhammad (p) is called The Quran, as in it you

read the verses and get to know wisdom of Allah, and what has been

revealed to the previous Prophets, of the verses of guidance and truth, so

it is "...the proof of that which is written in the former Scriptures(20:133).

Basically, the main objective of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an and

all the Books revealed by Allah, is guidance and truth', and calling

humanity to revert to Allah concerning their belief, worship, morals,

dealings etc. Likewise, all the Messengers of Allah and His Books call to

the oneness of Allah, belief in Him, in His judgment and punishment or

reward, in brotherhood, justice and piety; Allah the Almighty says: "And

We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad (p)) but We

inspired him: There is no deity except Me, so worship Me ." (21:25), and

says: "Nothing is said to you (O Muhammad) except what was said to the

Messengers before you."(41:43), and says: "Verily, We have inspired you

as We inspired Noah and the Prophets after him."(4:163).

The disputes among the People of the Scripture

Nevertheless, people of the Scripture to whom the scripture was sent, in

order to judge between people in matters wherein they differed, were

overwhelmed by their selfishness and desires, and by their eagerness for

leadership. And consequently they differed amongst themselves due to

their pride and haughtiness. Allah (Glorified be He) says: And only thoseto whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it after clear

proofs has come unto them out of envy, one to another. " (2:213). Theystarted their differences by a comprehensive distortion of the Torah

regarding stories of the Prophets, legal judgments, beliefs, morals

worship and finally they severed every relation between the Torah and

the Lord of mankind, as we shall see later.__________________________ _____________________________________________________

1 The Spirit of Truth is the name or description given to Muhammad (p) in the Gospelof John, but in The Gospel of Barnabas he is called Ahmad.

Allah the Almighty has said the truth as he said: "But those who didwrong changed the word from that which had been told to them for

another..." (2:59). And " Do you (believers) covet the hope that they will

believe in your religion in spite of the fact that a party of them used tohear the Word of Allah, and then they used to change it knowingly after

they understood it?" (2:75). And said: "Who then sent down the Book

which Moses brought, as a light and guidance to mankind which you

have made into separate sheets, disclosing some of it and concealing

    much."(6:91).

They changed and corrupted the Torah deliberately and the Book of Allah

which was revealed to Moses as guidance and light to the people was

emptied from the guidance and truth; those who were given the Book

emptied it after they were provided with the clear signs and teachings,

seeking the leadership and exploiting the common people, to eat the

properties of people illegally, and pursue high ranks in the earth1.

This Torah cannot be attributed to God

When we have a closer look at the Torah, which its followers claim to be

sent by God, and some even go further to say that each of the Qur'an, the

Torah and the Gospel are, equally, Divine Books. They mean the Torah

and the Gospel that are currently available, which are too far from havingany connection to God (Glorified be He) as witnessed by truth, reality

    and the texts there in.

As for the Torah which was revealed to Moses, it was lost and gone after

it was distorted by the Children of Israel. Then the scrolls were burnt

during the Babylonian dispersion, and Jews were carried captives.

There are several pieces of evidence that prove the Torah currently

available is not the original Torah:

    1. The Torah available now talks about the death of Moses, and that he

was buried and no one knows his burial place (1)( Deuteronomy, 34:5,6).

To whom then was this Torah which talks about Moses' death revealed?

    2. This Torah talks about the Torah of Moses, exactly the way it talks

about his death. It says: "And it came about, when Moses finished

writing the words of this law in a book until they were complete, that

Moses commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of

    15/103

    15

Jehovah, saying: Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of

the covenant of Jehovah". (Deuteronomy: 31)

Where is "this book of the law" that was completed and given by Moses

to the Levites to place beside the Ark of the Covenant? Is it the Torah ofMoses that is relating this story? Or is it a history book telling us about

    Moses and his book?

    3. lt may be sufficient to quote the opinion of the Catholic Church

regarding this Torah. The Church wrote in an introduction to the Bible

saying: No Catholic scholar of our age believes that Moses is the author

of the Torah, starting from the story of Adam to the story of his (Moses')

death. Several scribes wrote it down over 40 years and they are all

anonymous, having no authority or authenticity.

    4. It is also sufficient as evidence to prove that the ascription of Torahto Allah is false, and that it is not the Torah which was revealed to Moses,

all the lies and awful qualities attributed to Allah (Glorified be He), that

no honorable man would accept being given such traits

like cowardice, grudge, transgression and doing mischief on earth. And

also what all major sins and evil deeds, it attributes to the Prophets such

as like adultery, obscenity, looting and robbing, breaking covenant,

genocide etc. These attributes are actually considered the main reference

for all the actions of oppression and injustice practiced by the People ofthe Scripture nowadays in Palestine, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and

    Chechnya etc.

In brief we are not in need of a material evidence to prove that this Torah

is definitely, not the original one revealed to Moses. It is enough to read

parts of it and see how it invents lies against Allah and His Messengers

    2. Distortion of The Gospel

The Jews not only corrupted the Torah by changing the words of Allah,

and deforming the scripture which Allah revealed as guidance and mercy

but also, they did the same with the New Testament, as they turned it intoa story starting with raising the status of Jesus to being the son of God

and the king of Israel, and ended with debasing and crucifying him

among the criminals and killers. But the Book that Allah sent with truth

with the Prophets to judge between them in matters wherein they differed

is still prevailing and acting as a witness over mankind, which is the

Glorious Qur'an, "This is the Book, whereof there is no doubt, a guidance

to those who are pious and righteous."(2:2). Allah (Glorified be He) has

given us the Book for inheritance and He guarded it from distortion.

People still consider it their reference in matters of belief, worship,

guidance, judgment, the genuine history and sound morals. Allah the

Almighty says: "O people of the scripture there has come to you our

Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the

scripture and overlooking much. Indeed, there has come to you from

Allah a light and a clear Book. Wherewith Allah guides all those who

seek His Pleasure to the ways of peace, and He brings them out of

darkness by His Will unto light and guides them to a Straight Way"

    (5: 15-16).___________________________________________________________________________ _________________

1 Take for example, the ritual purification of bodies such as a woman in childbed condition, it

had to be performed through the rabbi, and a korban (offering) had to be brought. Likewise,

atonement of sins, used to be performed through offering korban, while the high priest used toenter into the Holy of Holiest in the temple, and sprinkle the blood of the goat (the sin

offering) on the mercy seat, and they would grill and eat the substance of hard working menwrongfully!

    The Gospel

As for the Gospel it is enough for us what its followers and scholars

wrote while no one ever claimed that this Gospel was revealed by God.

As Jesus is God or the son of God, there is no need for a Book to berevealed to him. Nevertheless, they claim that these Gospels were written

by people who were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

    The evidence for this is:

    l. In the introduction of the Gospel according to Luke, Luke admits that he

is writing the life story of Jesus Christ, just as the formers wrote about it.

He says: "Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative

concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, even asthose who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the

word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having traced the

course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order,

most excellent Theophilus; that you might know the certainty concerning

the things in which you were instructed." Luke is then admitting from

the very beginning that he is writing a narration or a biography of Jesus

Christ (peace be upon him). (Luke: 1:1-4)

    2. John also admits the same in his Gospel: "This is the disciple who is

testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his

testimony is true." Therefore, none of the authors of the Gospels claimed

that his Gospel is sent by God, or that it is a Divine Revelation to Jesus,

or that Jesus himself claimed that. (John: 21:24), Then we can clearly say:

only the Qur'an is truly a revelation from the Lord of mankind.

    3. Now we see that Christians do not allege anyway, that Jesus received a

Divine Revelation from God. On the contrary they tend to reject this

allegation as he is the son of God or God himself, so he is in no need of a

book to be revealed to him. His words in themselves are sufficient withtheir nice rhetoric, sayings and proverbs which are attributed to him and

which are acceptable, even though there are things which are attributed to

Jesus that could not be taken for granted to be really his own words! (1)

________________________________________________________1. Take for example the story of the Canaanite woman who cried for his help to save

her daughter who was possessed by a demon, but he did not answer her and said: "l

was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel ..... It is not fair to take the

children's bread and throw it to the dogs. "(Mathew :21-26). lt is not logical that Jesus

would say something like that, even if the woman was from Canaan, as being kind to

    animals is obligatory anyway.

before it." (35:31). This means that the Qur'an confirms the Books that

were revealed to Moses, Jesus and the other Prophets (before they were

corrupted, changed or lost). When the other nations corrupted their books

Allah deposed them from His guidance, and sent the final Scripture to

Muhammad (p), as He made him the last of His Messengers andProphets.

Allah the Almighty says: " Verily, We have inspired you (O Muhammad)

as We inspired Noah and the Prophets after him."(4:l63), and says:

"Verily! This is in the former Scriptures, the Scriptures of Abraham and

Moses. "(87: 18-19), and says: "They said: "Why does he not bring us a

sign (Proof) from his Lord? Has there not come to them the proof of that

which is (written) in the former Scriptures."(20:133).

All these verses prove that the Scripture of Allah is one and His religion

is one. They also prove that the Quran is the proof of that which is written

in the former scriptures and that it is the Book by which Allah ended all

the Divine messages, and the truth by which all the Messengers were

sent, and is the Book which is referred to in the verse: "This is the Book

whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are pious." (2:2).

It is also the proof of that which was mentioned in the former Scriptures,

regarding monotheism and worshipping Allah, glorifying and thanking

Him and believing in the Hereafter, which is referred to in the verses:"He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself, and remembers the

Name of his Lord and prays. But you prefer the worldly life; while the

Hereafter is better and ever lasting. Verily! This is in the former

Scriptures, The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses. "(87:14-19).

former books of God, and to it refers the verse: A Messenger

(Muhammad) from Allah, reciting (the Qur'an) purified pages,Containing correct and straight laws (from Allah)." (98:2-3), i.e. these

pages (from the Qur'an) contain the laws contained in the books revealed

    to the former Prophets.

It was finally inherited to us after it was corrupted by the former nations

as Allah the Almighty says: "Then We caused to inherit the Book those

we have chosen of Our servants." (35:32).

This book therefore has the following qualities:

    1. It is the most genuine divine Book.

    2. lt is the most authentic Book from Allah.

    3. It is the Book most comprehensive for guidance and truth.

    4. It is the Book easiest for glorifying Allah.

    5. It is the Book with the greatest effect in guiding mankind.

These points shall be clarified in the first chapter.

    A comparison

Let us have glance at the new distortions and changes to the Torah, and

Gospel in our era, as for the old distortions we shall explain it in the next

    chapter.

    The Distortion of the Torah

The Torah went through several alterations and changes, and was finally

turned void of all the verses pertinent to faith, guidance, truth and piety. It

turned its message totally to the ancient era of Abraham, which revolves

round the right of the Jews in the land of Palestine as an everlasting

possession, and the superiority of their race to all other races.

The Torah was then limited to what is now known as the Old Testament.

The word 'testament', as the Jews claim, signifies the covenant which God

entered into with Abraham, giving him and his descendants the right in an

everlasting possession of the Promised Land namely: Palestine, and

proclaiming the Jews as God's favorite race. The Jews chose to divide this

conspiracy over the first five books of the Old Testament; the Pentateuch

or the Books of Moses, or the Torah.

    23/103

    23

    1. Genesis: The word Genesis has the meaning of birth, origin or the

beginning of. It starts with a description of God's creation of the

world, and then talks about God's promise to Abraham that through

his offspring all the people on earth would be blessed. It also

mentions the stories of Abraham's descendants, Isaac (his son) andJacob (his grandson and known as Israel), and of Jacob's twelve sons,

who were the founders of the twelve tribes of Israel.

    2. Exodus: The name Exodus means 'departure' and it refers to the

departure of the people of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land

    (Palestine).

    3. Leviticus: It contains regulations for worship and religious ceremonies

in ancient Israel, and the priests who were responsible forcarrying

out these instructions, and acting as mediators between God and thechildren of Israel.

    4. Numbers: Gives an account of the Israelites who departed with Moses

    from Egypt to Sinai.

    5. Deuteronomy: Again Moses is reminding the Israelites of the meaningof God's covenant with them, of the Promised Land (which really

    means usurping other people's land).

As a matter of fact, the Torah, the Book which Allah the Almighty

sent to His Prophet Moses to be guidance to the Children of Israel, was distorted in the past. The following are just two recent examples

of the non stop distortion of the Torah and the Gospel.

A Recent Distortion of the Bible in two Different Editions

In the Psalms of David (which are basically a book of hymns and prayers

performed by the Prophet David, and according to the Qur'an the

mountains and birds used to Glorify Allah with him). In the first edition

of the Torah in psalm 44 it says: "We have heard with our ears, God; ourfathers have told us, what work you did in their days, in the days of old.

You drove out the nations with your hand but you planted them. You

afflicted the peoples, but you spread them abroad... .... You are my King

God. Command victories for Jacob. Through you, will we push down our

adversaries. Through your name, will we tread them under who rise up

against us .... But now you rejected us, and brought us to dishonor, and

dont go out with our armies... ..... You sell your people for nothing and

have gained nothing from their sale... . .... If we have forgotten the

name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god, won t Godsearch this out? (Psalms 44:21)

    2. The most authentic Text.

It is The Most Authentic Divine Text

Allah the Almighty said: "Verily It is We Who sent down the Message

(i.e. the Qur'an) and surely, We will guard it." (15:9). Allah, (Glorified be

He) guaranteed to protect His Book from distortion and alteration,

because it is the last Book to be sent by Him. This Book will last till the

Day of Resurrection, and hence it includes all that people need regarding

their belief, worship, morals, justice etc. In brief it contains all that fulfills

happiness and peace for humanity in this world and in the Hereafter. That

is why it was guaranteed all the means for its protection in a way that was

not available for any other Book. Truly Allah says: and verily, it is an

honorable respected Book. Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or

behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise (Allah

    the Almighty). "(41:41-42)

    From The First Day

    It was Memorized and Recorded

lt has been proven undoubtedly that not one single letter from the Qur'an

that was revealed to Muhammad (p) was changed. The proof is in the

    following:

    l. Whenever a verse or a number of verses was revealed to the Prophet (p)

he used to teach them to his companions, who would in turn memorizethem and implement them in practice. Abu Amr el-Dani reported, on the

authority of Othman bin 'Affan and bin Masud and others that the

Messenger of Allah used to teach them ten verses of the Qur'an, and they

would not proceed on to the next ten verses until they had learnt their

meaning and applied them. (Al Baihaqi, 6/16).

    2. The messenger of Allah selected a group from among his companions to

be the scribes of the revelation. When the Prophet (p) used to receive a

revelation, he would immediately dictate it to his companions, and wouldalso specify its location relative to other verses and Chapters.

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    28/103

    28

He would instruct them to insert the verses in a certain Surah (chapter)

and in a certain location inside the Surah, i.e. the order of the verses that

is to be followed, which we still have up to this day.

    3. The companions of the Prophet (p) were also very much concernedabout the preservation of the Qur'an. They used to memorize as much of

the Qur'an as possible, and many memorized all of the Qur'an. The rare

literates also used to write it down and some of them had their own

personal copies of the Qur'an. All of this was during the lifetime of the

    Prophet (p).

Ibn Hajar narrated in his 'Al Isaba' that: Oqbah bin Amir was one of them

who compiled the Quran in one Book. Abu Saeed bin Younus had

reported that he has seen the Mushaf of Oqbah in Egypt. In its end was

written: Oqbah bin Amir wrote it with his hand.

Therefore, when the Prophet (p) passed away, the entire Qur'an had been

memorized by many of the Companions, and also existed in written form,

but had not been compiled between two covers. At the battle Yamamah, a

    great number of Muslims who had memorized the Qur'an were killed;

they were estimated to be almost seventy martyrs. The death of such a

large number of the reciters and memorizers of the Qur'an alarmed 'Omar

bin al-Khattab and he feared that more would die in future battles, as they

were all eager for martyrdom. So he urged the Caliph Abu Bakr topreserve and compile the Qur'an in one Book. Abu Bakr was worried at

first to do something the Prophet (p) did not do, but 'Omar kept on talking

to him until he finally agreed.

The First Official Compilation of the Quran

Imam Bukhari reported on the authority of Zaid bin Thabit al- Ansari:

"Abu Bakr sent for me when the soldiers of Yamamah had been killed.'Omar was present with Abu Bakr who said, 'Omar has come to me and

said: 'The people have suffered heavy casualties on the battle of

Yamamah, and I am afraid that there will be more casualties among the

reciters of the Quran (those who know the Quran by heart) at other battle-

fields, whereby a large part of the Qur'an may be lost, unless you collect

it. And I am of the opinion that you should collect the Quran. Abu Bakr

added 'I said to 'Omar, How can I do something which Allah's Apostle

had not done? 'Omar said (to me), By Allah, it is really a good thing. So

'Omar kept on pressing, trying to persuade me to accept his proposal, tillAllah opened my heart for it and I had the same opinion as 'Omar".

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    29/103

    29

Zaid bin Thabit added: 'Omar was sitting with Abu Bakr keeping quiet.

Then Abu Bakr said: You are a wise young man and used to scribe the

revelation for the Messenger of Allah. So, look for the fragmentary

scripts and collect it (in one manuscript). Zaid said: "By Allah, if he had

ordered me to move one of the mountains it would not have been harderfor me than what he ordered me concerning the collection of the Qur'an.

Then I said to both of them: "How could you do something which the

Prophet (p) has not done?" Abu Bakr said, by Allah, it is really a good

thing. I kept on arguing with him about it till Allah opened my heart for

that which He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and 'Omar."

The method followed by Zaid in Collecting the Qur'an

    1. He asked the Companions to bring each of them along all what he has

of the Quran in written form.

    2. He did not accept any written verse, except when two trust worthy

witnesses testified that it was written in the presence of the Prophet (p).

This method of authentication and honesty was never known for any

book but the Quran. Even though Zaid and many other companions

memorized the Qur'an by heart, he only depended on written evidence:

(verses of the Quran that have been already written in the presence of the

messenger of Allah with trustworthy witnesses). Therefore, Zaid was not

writing the Quran for the first time; he was collecting and copying all that

was written during the lifetime of the Prophet (p) in his presence.

The Second Official Compilation of the Qur'an

'Othman was elected for the Caliphate after the sudden demise of 'Omar.

Muslims continued to spread the message of Islam everywhere to liberate

people from the slavery of man to the service of the Allah, and from the

injustice of religions to the justice of Islam. Muslims from different parts

of the world, with different tongues and cultures started to join the

Muslim forces in their battle against the enemy. In the battle of Armenia

the soldiers started to dispute among themselves regarding the recitation

of the Qur'an, and every one of them was biased to his style of recitation,

as they were taught by different companions.

Huzhayfah ibn al-Yaman, one of the companions who was among them at

the time, witnessed what was happening and when he returned to

Madinah, directly went to 'Othman and said: O Commander of thebelievers! Save this nation before they fall into a disaster.

('In truth' in this verse refers to narrations and stories of previous nations,

and 'in justice' means the judgments). The verse continues: "And if youobey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allah's

Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but

falsify."(6:116). Allah, (Glorified be He) also said: "So put your trust inAllah; surely, you are on manifest truth."(27:79).

It is very important for any believer in God, His Messengers and His

Scriptures, to consider the Qur'an as his criterion in judging the truth of

narrations and the justice of judgments, of that which is attributed to God,

His Messengers and His Scriptures. Allah, (Glorified be He) says: 'And

those who have been given knowledge see that what is revealed to you

from your Lord is the truth, and guides to the Path of the Exalted in

Might, Owner of all praise. "(34:6).

This means that all that contradicts what is in the Qur'an, and what people

of knowledge reject is not of the religions of Allah, even if it was written

in thousand books, thousands of times (1).Allah the Almighty says: " [Say

(O Muhammad) "Shall I seek a judge other than Allah while it is He whohas sent down unto you the Book (The Quran), explained in detail "

(6:114), and says: "That is because Allah has sent down the Book (the

Qur'an) in truth. And verily, those who disputed as regards the Book are

    far away in opposition. "(2:176).

Therefore, all that was reported in the Torah, which contradicts what is in

the Qur'an, is totally rejected and cannot be attributed to Allah. The

Qur'an alone has been proven to be the only remaining authoritative and

    authentic divine revelation.

The Easiest Book for Glorifying Allah

Allah the Almighty says: 'And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to

understand and remember, then is there any that will remember or

receive admonition?"(54:17). One of the characteristics of the Qur'an isthat it is easy to understand, recite and memorize. The Qur'an has a

matchless eloquent style; it flows into the heart of the reader with the

fluency of its words and the firmness of its linguistic structures. Allah the

Almighty described the Qur'an as: "(This is) a Book, the Verses whereof

are perfected and then explained in detail from One Who is All-Wise and

    Well-Acquainted."(11:1).______________________________________________________________________

    1. This is like what we read in the Torah, attributed to God and hid Prophets of evil traits suchas injustice, transgression, treachery, distortion, adultery etc. as we shall see when we talk

    about the Torah.

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    33/103

    33

The Quran also has the following characteristics:

    1. Eloquent style. 2. Clarity of meaning. 3. Perfect Guidance.

    l. Eloquent Style:

It is a Book with its precise verses. Its words are specifically chosen. Its

verses have similarity as they are eloquently structured combining beauty

of expression, and the strong impact on the reader.

    2. Clarity of meaning

Clarity of meaning is the natural outcome of the perfection of its verses,

beauty of its structure and selection of words. No other scripture has ever

been similar to it. It contains the words of Allah exactly as they have beenrevealed no deviation, alteration, distortion or even translation from a

language to another; it was revealed in Arabic and is in its original

language till now. Truly Allah says: "Say: It (this Qur'an) has been sent

down by Him (Allah) Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth."(25:6); Everyone can understand it whether of the public or of the people

    of knowledge.

3.Perfect Guidance:This is the comprehensive thought provoking Book for guidance,

legislation and glorifying Allah. Allah, (Glorified be He) says: "indeed,We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book, (the Qur'an) in which

there is your honor" (21:10), and says: "Certainly, We have brought to

them a Book (the Qur'an) which We have explained in detail with

knowledge, - a guidance and a mercy to a people who believe." (7:52).

This idea shall be more obvious when we discuss the essence and subject

    of the Quran.

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    34/103

    34

The Essence of the Qur'an is Guidance and Truth

The main objective of the Glorious Qur'an is to lead mankind out from

darkness to light, "(This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you in

order that you might lead mankind out of darkness into light by theirLords Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise ."

(14:1) The means to achieve this goal are guidance and truth, which Allah

had made the main core of His Book. Truly Allah says: "He is Who has

sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam), that

He may make it superior over all ways of life..." (48:28).

    - Guidance means the purification of the interior of the individual and the

    nation through piety and chastity.

    - Truth is what reforms the exterior of the individual and the society

    through justice and equity.

Guidance and Truth: Both are needed to establish the nation which

deserves to be Allah's vicegerent on earth. Guidance and truth are like the

two sides of one coin; Islam which is the religion that conforms with the

human instinct and the Qur'an which is the Book of Allah. Guidance and

truth are actually inseparable; guidance is what leads to truth, goodness

and the Straight Path of Allah. On the other hand, truth is the fixed notion

which leads to guidance, goodness and also the Straight Path of Allah.

Therefore, each guidance reflects truth and each truth is in itselfguidance.

That is why Allah described Muslims as being: "a nation who guides with

the truth, and establishes justice therewith."(7:181). Allah, the Almighty

said: "Allah! There is no God to be worshipped but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. It is He Who has sent

down the Book (the Qur'an) to you with truth, confirming what came

before it. And he sent down the Torah and the Gospel. Aforetime, as a

guidance to mankind And He sent down the Criterion (this Qur'an). ".

(3:2- 4). The Quran was also described as being guidance to the pious and was also described as being the truth: "And with truth We have sent itdown (i.e. the Qur'an), and with truth it has descended"(17:105).

and says: "O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it

Moreover Allah the Almighty, commanded His Prophet(p) to address thepeople of the Scripture, "Say: O people of the Scripture come to a word

that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allah, and that

we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others

as lords besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that

    we are Muslims."(3:64).

    c. Earth has been Created for all Mankind:

This is the third issue which results out of faith and belief in the Lord ofmankind. It is the belief that earth has been created for all human beings,

as Allah Truly says: "And the earth He has put for the creatures."

(55:10), which means that every living being has the right to live, work

and earn his livelihood as Allah the Almighty says: "He brought you forth

from the earth and settled you therein." (11:61), and says: "It is He, Who

has made the earth subservient to you, so walk in the path thereof and eat

of His provision, and to Him will be the Resurrection ." (67:15) Allah the

Almighty also says: "Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and

the sky as a structure." (2:22), and says: "It is He, Who created for you

all that is on earth." (2:29).

Earth and all its resources and all that exists on it, has been created by

Allah and subjected to mankind to populate it with righteousness, piety

and good deeds, which will increase its productivity and welfare, and

bring happiness to people living on it. Allah (Glorified be He) says: "Hebrought you forth from the earth and settled you therein." (11:61) The

Prophet (p) asserted: "People are partners in water, grass and fire." He

also said to Azzubair ibn alAwwam: "The land is the land of Allah and

the children are the children of Allah, so wherever you find prosperity, settle down."

    (Narrated by Ahmed)

So, no one really owns the earth, it is only Allah, Who is the Owner of

the earth and all that is therein. Allah the Almighty says: "Say: to whom

belongs the earth and whosoever is therein If you know? They will say: 'lt

is Allah's' (23:84). People can only make benefit of the earth and its

resources and populate it as long as they live. Death then follows to prove

the false claim of anyone who alleges that he truly owns anything on

    earth.

No one has the right to expel someone from his land claiming that God

gave it to him specifically, out of all His creatures, like the allegation of

the Jews in their owning the land of Palestine according to a previous

covenant given by God to Abraham and his offspring, as we shall see in

the Books of the Torah starting from Genesis:l7 and what follows. So,every body is His creatures and servants, He is their Lord, Sustainer and

Protector. He is the Lord of the Universe.

Most Beneficent, Most MercifulJust as we believe in Allah, the One and only God, the Lord of mankind,

we also believe that He is the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful.

The Most Beneficent: He is the source of every mercy, and His mercy

embraces all creatures; man, animals, plants, angels and jinn. All that

exists in this universe enjoys His mercy and benevolence, as Allah the

Almighty says: "...and My Mercy embraces all things." (7: 156), and

says: " It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that

you may rest therein, during the night and that you may seek of His

Bounty by day, and in order that you may be grateful. " (28:73), and says:

and among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings,

giving you a taste of His Mercy, and that the ships may sail at His

Command and that you may seek of His Bounty, in order that you may bethankful. ". (30:46) and says: "Look then at the effects (results) of Allah's

Mercy, how He revives the earth after its death."(30:50).

Allah (Glorified be He) also says in the Qur'an, "The Most Beneficent has

taught the Quran. He created man. He taught him eloquent speech. "(55:

l- 4). Following these verses, are almost 20 verses mentioning the signs of

Allah's Mercy towards His creation, in a way which refreshes their souls

and awakens their consciousness and reform their lives in this world and

    in the Hereafter.

Out of the perfection of His Mercy, He did not only provide His ' creation

    with these signs of mercy, and means of comprehension and perception;

i.e. the hearing, the sight, and natural guidance, but He also provided

them with the Divine revelation. God sent His Messengers and the Books

to His creation and provided them with signs and evidences, and

concluded His Messages with the Message of Muhammad (p) who was

sent by Allah to the whole mankind. Allah says: 'And We have not sent

you except as a mercy for mankind. "(21:107). `

    42

The Most Merciful: He is the most Merciful. This is a special mercy that

He bestows over whomever He chooses of His creation. It is out of His

Mercy that He sent His Messengers, to convey His religion and guidance

to His pious believers, who acted as true vicegerents and followed His

guidance. So He increased their guidance and bestowed on them theirpiety. Allah also bestowed His mercy upon those believers and made

them a mercy to other servants, as Allah the Almighty says: "The

believers, men and women, are supporters of one another, they enjoin the

right and forbid the wrong. They perform the prayer, and give the Zakah,

and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them.

Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All- Wise. "(9:71).

Belief that Allah is One, that there is no deity except Him, and that He is

the Lord of mankind, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, will create

strong and determined generations. When one believes that his life is in

the hands of Allah and that He is the source of his providings bestowed

upon him by His Bounty, this will make him rid himself of the fetters of

cowardice and weakness, and will set off in life, to work hard, fearing

nothing but Allah (Glorified be He).

It is narrated that the commander of the Romans sent to Khalid ibn al-

Walid on the day of the battle of Yarmuk a letter threatening him. Khalid

wrote back to him saying: 'I swear by Allah if you were in heaven, Allah

would have descended you down to us, or raised us up to you as He says:'And you cannot escape in the earth or in the heaven. And besides Allahyou have neither any Protector nor any Helper. And those who disbelieve

in the signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him, it is they who have no

hope of My Mercy, and it is they who will have a painful torment."(29:22-23). I warn you, and inform you that victory is ours, because

    Allah is with us".

This confidence and this power emanate from belief in Allah the

Almighty, and that He is the Irresistible Supreme over His slaves, andnothing can escape from Him in the earth or in the heaven.

These are the attributes of Allah in the Holy Qur'an. And this is the crux

of guidance, and the first base of the message of Qur'an. This is what we

need and the whole mankind which has gone astray needs.

Belief in the Day of Judgment

The Owner of the Day of Resurrection:

We mentioned earlier that the Glorious Quran which Allah sent down to

mankind in order to bring them out from darkness into light is based on

guidance and truth. We also said that guidance is based on belief in Allah

    and the Day of Judgment.

Muslims believe that Allah is the Owner of the Day of Resurrection, and

that He did not create this universe or made us vicegerents in vain, and

that we shall be recompensed for what we have earned. This actually

conforms with the Wisdom and Justice of Allah, as He Truly says: "AndAllah has created the heavens and the earth with truth, in order that each

person may be recompensed what he has earned and they will not be

    wronged."(45:22).

There must be a day when Allah will judge every man for what he has

done; it is called the Day of Judgment where He will requite those who

do evil with that which they have done and reward those who do good

with what is best. Allah the Almighty says: "Shall We then treat the

Muslims like the criminals. " (68:35), and says: "Shall We treat those

who believe and do righteous deeds, like corruptors on earth? Or shall

We treat the pious like wicked."(38:28).

There must be a day when people will be brought back to Allah, and

every person will be recompensed what he has earned; otherwise, the

Creator of this universe would be unjust if the oppressor and the

oppressed, the pious and the criminal, the righteous and the evil doer will

be treated equally, after they all have been buried. Allah the Almighty

Truly says: So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom shall

see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom shall seeit. "(99:7-8).

It is a sign of Allah's Mercy, Justice and Wisdom to judge people on the

Day of Resurrection. He the Almighty says: "Did you think that We had

created you in vain, and that you would not be brought back to Us? So

Exalted be Allah, the True King. " ( 23:115- 116), and says:" And to Allah

belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, that He may

requite those who do evil with that which they have done and reward

those who do good with what is best". (53:31).

    The fruits of guidance

The faith in Allah and the Day of Resurrection are the two poles of guidance,

on which the Glorious Qur'an focuses, and they are the base of all its teachings

as well as the proof and evidence for its genuineness. It is through thisguidance that Islam produced this great civilization which spread peace,

security and knowledge over centuries of its prosperity. And it produced thebest nation for mankind, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong

and believing in Allah. We shall mention some of the practical examples of the

effect of faith on the individual's attitude and on life in general.

    a. Peace and Security:Al-Baihaqi narrated in his book 'al-Sunan al-Kubra' that 'Omar bin al-

Khattab was assumed the office of judge during the Caliphate of AbuBakr al-Siddiq for a whole year, but no two persons came to him to judge

between them. Therefore, he went to Abu Bakr and said: "O Caliphate of

the Prophet, why have you appointed me for an office that is of no use to

me?" Abu Bakr asked him: "What do you mean?" 'Omar answered: "You

have appointed me for the office of judge, and now for a year no two

people have brought their dispute to me?" Abu Bakr replied: "All praise

be to Allah Who made the Quran and belief the judge between His

servants that they have been just to each other."

    b. Avoiding the Unlawful:

The authorities of Hadith narrated that 'Omar bin al-Khattab the

commander of the believers was on a night patrol in Madinah, when he

heard a woman say to her daughter: "O my daughter, get up and mix that

milk with water." The girl said: "O Mother, have you not heard the decree

of the Commander of the Believers today?" The mother asked; "What

was that?" The girl replied: 'He had ordered that milk should not be

mixed with water. "The mother said: "Where is 'Omar? Verily he cannot

see us now." The girl then told her mother: "If 'Omar cannot see us, thencertainly, the Lord of Omar can see us!"

(1)The strong belief in God and

that He is watching over you, has stopped the crime of cheating before it

took place, which could have not been stopped by any law or police

    force.

______________________________________________________1 The outcome of this behaviour of the poor girl was that the Caliph 'Omar bin al-Khattab asked hiscompanion in the night patrol 'Yarfa' to find out who is living in that house. In the morning he told him

that this house is of a widow and her daughter who make their livelihood out of milking a cow. 'Omarthen gathered his sons and asked which one of them is in need of a wife so that he would marry him tothe best of the righteous Muslim girls. He finally married her to his son 'Asem. She gave birth to a girl

who grew up to be the mother of 'Omar ibn 'Abdil'Aziz who became the fifth of the rightly guidedCaliphs.

This action on 'Omar's part is an example of the effect of belief in Allah

and the Hereafter in the life of a Muslim, i.e. the belief that this worldly

life is nothing but a quick enjoyment and that the Hereafter is the home

that will remain forever. The outcome of this firm belief was that

Muslims spent the best of their property and wealth for the cause ofAllah, to the poor and needy, out of their own free will, and hoping for

nothing but to please Allah and gain His mercy and forgiveness. Allah the

Glorified says: "But in the Hereafter there is severe torment and

Forgiveness from Allah and His approval, whereas the life of this world

is only a deceiving enjoyment." (57:20).

This example was followed by many of the Companions of the Prophet

and those who followed them. They were eager to give part of their

property as endowment in the cause of Allah to be given to the poor and

needy. These religious endowments were the seeds of charitable and

philanthropic deeds which were always part of the Islamic life and from

which Muslims and non-Muslims benefited alike. These endowments

were used to build roads, schools, hospitals and bridges, to dig rivers and

graves, and they were even used to establish societies supporting

kindness to animals. A part of it was used to raise Muslim armies. The

endowments of al-Azhar were used to finance its students and scholars

from all over the world which led to its independence and stopped any

interference from the rulers in its affairs. There are examples of these

endowments in Cordova, Baghdad and other Muslim cities.

All these good deeds were the fruit of the guidance and belief established

by the Glorious Quran which is better than any manmade system run by

governments after long summits and discussions.

When Tu'ma denied that the Jew could not prove his story as the stolen

armor was found in his house which was a physical evidence. So, he

became the suspect. The Prophet (p) was about to pass a sentence against

him. At that time Allah revealed nine verses acquitting the Jew and

accusing the Muslim, because it was the truth; and Allah sent Muhammad(p) with the guidance and religion of truth.

Allah the Almighty says concerning this event : "Surely, We have sent

down to you the Book in truth so you might judge between men by that

which Allah has shown you, so be not a pleader for the treacherous.........

Allah has sent down to you the Book, and the Wisdom, and taught you

that which you knew not. And ever great is the Grace of Allah unto you.

    (4:105-113).

This is the Qur'an which condemned the Muslim as he acted unjustly, and

declared the Jew innocent. How can it be compared to what is in the

Torah, "Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother; interest of

money, interest of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon interest:

Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou

shalt not lend upon interest". (Deuteronomy: 23:202l).

    Absolute Justice:

The Glorious Quran says: "O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allahand be just witnesses and let not enmity and hatred of others make you

avoid justice. Be just that is nearer to piety.... "(5:8). This is another

example of absolute justice as stated by the Qur'an. It was narrated that

the Prophet ( p) sent 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah to estimate the dates of the

Jews of Khaibar, on the palm trees. The Prophet (p) has previously made

an agreement with them that half the dates will be for the Muslims and

the other half for the Jews. As usual the Jews wanted to bribe 'Abdullah

but he refused and said to them: "You enemies of Allah! Do you want tobribe me? By Allah I despise you more than the monkeys and the swine,

and Muhammad (p) is more beloved to me than my own self but my

hatred for you and my love for the Prophet (p) does not make me avoid

justice, as Allah the Almighty says: ".. and let not enmity and hatred of

others make you avoid justice. Be just that is nearer to piety . "(5:8).

Have the people of the Scripture a single verse like this in their Book?

    Fulfilling the Covenant:

It is narrated that when the Muslim leader Abu 'Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah

undertook to protect the inhabitants of Damascus, Hims and other cities

of Sham, and safeguarded them from the Romans who were oppressingthem at that time, and in return levied Jizyah

    (1)upon them. When he had

to leave the cities and fight the Romans far from them, he refunded the

amount of jizyah they paid. He told them we have taken this to safeguard

you and your cities from the Romans. We cannot do that now, as we are

compelled to go to them. So, we have no right in your Jizyah. So, have it.

They wanted him to accept it as a gift and appreciation of the Muslims'

justice and honesty, but he refused.

Where are this honesty and virtue of Muslims, and the stand of States

which attack innocent people and rob their properties and valuables

pleading that they are protecting them, and defending their country, as we

see nowadays in Palestine, Chechnya, Iraq etc.

The Rights of Non-Muslims in the Islamic State:

Non-Muslims, who live under the protection of an Islamic government,

have their full rights guaranteed equal to those of the Muslims according

to a covenant with them. This is a clear example of the undertaking of

Islam towards the non-Muslims who are tied with them in covenant as theprinciple of Truth, equality, and honesty. There is no similar incident in

    the History of nations.

It is narrated that Sheikul Islam Bin Taymiyyah, went to Kazan the Khan

of the Tatars asking him to return back the properties of the Muslims and

their captives, Muslims and non-Muslims under their covenant, whom the

Tatars detained with them. Kazan released only the Muslim captives and

their properties and refused to release the Jews and the Christians. But

Bin Taymiyyah insisted upon their release. He told Kazan that theMuslims have undertaken to protect them, and are obliged to fulfill their

rights, as they have the same rights and duties as the Muslims. So, the

Muslims cannot accept to be released until they were all released with

them. Finally Kazan accepted and released all the Jews and Christians.

This Qur'an Guides to that which is Most Just and RightThis is the book of Allah and His religion with which He sent His

messengers confirming what came before it, i.e. the Torah and the

Gospel, which were revealed to Moses and Jesus. Thus it offers the mostaccurate vision and the most truthful ideology ever existed, guiding to the

truth and the straight path bringing out mankind from darkness to light.

It teaches us about Allah through His signs, and contemplating in the

dominion of the heavens and the earth and the effects of His Mercy and

    Power.

    Allah the Almighty says:

    - "Say: Behold what is in the heavens and the earth." (10:101).

    - "Then let man look at his food." (80:24).

    - "Do they not look at the camels, how they are created? And at the sky,how it is raised? And at the mountains how they are erected? And at the

earth, how it is spread out?" (88:17-20).

    - "Have they not looked at the heaven above them, how We have

structured it and adorned it, and there are no rifts in it? And the earth!

We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and haveproduced therein every kind of lovely growth; as an insight and a

Reminder for every servant turning to Allah. And We have sent down

blessed water from the sky, then We produced therewith gardens and

grains that are reaped; And tall date-palms, with ranged clusters; A

provision for the servants. And We have given life therewith to a deadland. Thus will be the resurrection (of the dead)."(50:6-11).

It is a Book revealed distinctively to guide to Allah, and tie His servants

with Him, and make them love Him through the signs of His Mercy in the

universe and His blessing He bestowed upon them, so that they may be

grateful to His bounties, and to worship Him alone in order to be happy in

this life and in the Hereafter; whereas Allah is self sufficient of all His

    creations.

    He says:

"Allah it is He Who has made the sea of service to you, that ships maysail through it by His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty,

and that you may be thankful" (45:12).

    Refuting Misconceptions

This is the truth with which Allah has established the existence of this

world, and accepted it as our faith and practice. We the Muslims are

made witnesses on humanity for this truth. Allah the Exalted enclosedthis truth in His last Message to humanity the Holy Quran which is the

essence of the guidance of prophets, where He specified the bases of

belief, the rights of man like freedom, equality, justice, peace, fraternity,

tolerance, love, and cooperation on virtue and pious forbidding each other

wrong and enmity. We saw examples of the Muslims behaving among

them, and behaving with others who are friends or foes.

Here we shall refute the slanders, calumniations, and misconceptions

about Islam, stirred by the enemies of God, enemies of truth andhumanity in this petulant era where facts are twisted and even mixed with

fallacy; the criminal is called a victim and the victim is called criminal,

the killing invader is called the attacked, and the defender of his soul,

home, honor and property is called a terrorist or criminal. Right is mixed

with wrong and truth with lie. People are confused. We shall unveil the

face of truth, and throw the truth on the falsehood which will demolish it.

Some of the main slanders and accusations against Islam that will be

    discussed are:

    1. Islam is a religion of fanaticism that does not acknowledge the others.

    2. Islam is a religion of war, violence and exploitation.

    1. There is no fanaticism in IslamThose who claim that Islam is a fanatic religion want to say that Islam

does not acknowledge the freedom of others in embracing the belief and

religion they wish, and would only accept that they embrace Islam as

their religion, or the sword would be the alternative. This is actually a

false claim because Islam is a religion that conforms with the natural

instinct, and accepts the fact that beliefs are never imposed by sword, andthat people only believe in what their hearts and minds accept. Islam

maintains that there is no compulsion in religion, and it is a fact of life

that people hate and reject what they are forced to accept. Allah the

Almighty says: "Invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and fair

preaching, and argue with them in a way that is the best." (6:125).

The call of the Prophet (p) is the same call of every Messenger and every

Divine Message. Islam believes in Moses and Jesus and all the previous

Prophets and Messengers. It believes in the Torah and the Gospel.

  • 8/7/2019 The Holy Books[1]

    57/103

    57

Nay, belief in Muhammad (p) and his Message is not complete until the

Muslim believes in Moses and Jesus and the Torah and the Gospel.

Whoever disbelieves in any of these, is not accepted to be a true Muslim

as Allah (Glorified be He) says: "Say: We believe in Allah and that which

has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Abraham,Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants and that which has been

given to Moses and Jesus, and that which has been given to the Prophets

from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him

    we have submitted."(2: 136).

Allah the Almighty also says: "Verily, those who disbelieve in Allah and

His Messengers and wish to make distinction between Allah and His

Messengers saying: We believe in some but reject others, and wish to

adopt a way in between. They are in truth disbelievers. And We have

prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment." (4:150-151).

We, the Muslims, believe in Moses and his Book and in Jesus and his

Book, while the Christians and the Jews do not believe in Muhammad

and his Book; so which one of the two parties does not approve the other?

Greater even is the acknowledgement in practice, as Islam allows the

Muslim to marry a Jewish or a Christian woman, which means that all

three religions will meet under one and the same roof. Is there any other

religion on earth that accepts the religion of others and respects their

belief, freedom and right to choose as Islam does?

Moreover, Islam has affirmed in the Qur'an there is no compulsion in

religion. Allah the Almighty says: "There is no compulsion in religion.

Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path."(2:256),

And says: "The truth is from your Lord. Then whosoever wills, let himbelieve, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve."(18:29).

Allah Exalted be He said to His Prophet ( p): "And had your Lord willed,

those on earth would have believed all of them together. So, will you thencompel mankind, until they become believers?"(10:99) and said: "... your

duty is only to convey and on Us is the reckoning."(13:40).

The mission of the Prophet ( p) is only to convey His Lord's Message and

call people to monotheism, and whoever wills to disbelieve will be only

harming himself, as Allah the Almighty says: "And whoever disbelieved

let not his disbelief grieve you, to Us is their return, and We shall inform

them what they have done." (31:23), and says: "Not upon you is their

guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills."(2:272).

Muslims, non-Muslims of the People of the Scripture, and of polytheists

the guidance and happiness of all mankind, and to deliver them fromdarkness into light. That is why he used to get upset due to the

polytheists' aversion from him and that is why Allah the Almighty used to

they turn away, We have not sent you as a protector over them. Your duty

    is to convey."(3:64)

The prophet ( p) confined his mission to conveying the message to the

atheists, polytheists and the people of the Scripture, as the Quran says:

"Say: O people of the Scripture: Come to a word that is just between usand you, that we worship none but Allah, and that we do not associateany partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords

besides Allah. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are

    Muslims." (42:48).

The Quran did not say, if they turn away fight them with the sword, but

rather commanded the Prophet ( p) to ask them to bear witness that we

are Muslims, and leave them to the belief that they chose to themselves.

Allah the Almighty also says concerning this point: "Say Allah Alone Iworship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake, So worship what

you like besides Him. (39:14-15), and also asserts: " Say: Odisbelievers! I

worship not that which you worship. Nor will you worship that which I

worship. And I shall not worship that which you are worshiping. Nor will

you worship that which I worship. To you be your religion, and to me my

    religion."(109: 1-6).

It is clear from the above mentioned verses that the Glorious Quran and

the Prophet ( p) acknowledge the others' right in choosing their belief andeven though one's creed is a very serious and deep issue that affects all

aspects of life, Allah the Almighty left it up to each one to choose his

belief and his judgment will be on the Day of Resurrection. It does no

harm to a Muslim for others to worship deities besides Allah. These are

beliefs and things related to every person. (Every soul earns not blame

except against itself. 6:164). This issue was finalized in the Qur'an with

the order of Allah to his Messenger to tell the polytheists: "Say: If the

Most Beneficent had a son, then I would have been the first of

worshippers." (43:81). But the truth, wisdom, justice and natural instinct

prove to us Allah is Free of need of a son, or begetter.

    Immigration to Madinah:

Abu Bakr the Companion of the Prophet ( p) talked about the difficult

time they had before immigrating to Madinah and said: "All the Arabswere shooting us through one bow. So, we used to sleep in our armors,

and one of us would say to his companion: 'would that day ever come

when we shall be able to get deep sleep all night till the morning breaks?.

Nevertheless, Quraish did not let them live in peace in Madinah, but

followed them and threatened their property and lives. Their fault was

only that they said: our Lord is Allah.

    Permission to Fight:

There had to be an end to this aggression and defiance, and there was no

room anymore for forgiveness or patience. Only then the following words

of Allah the Almighty were revealed:

"Permission to fight is given to those who are fought, because they have

been oppressed, and surely, Allah is able to bring them victory. Those

    who have been expe
