>&0-%/.$&0!(5.::;$95(9#*$&00$%)5-$holiday season on Dec. 7 by inviting everyone to the Holiday Lighting Ceremony where Hofstra Hall became the highlight. Everyone gathered to enjoy its radiance cutting through the night sky. Hofstra University students and faculty were all encouraged to come out to the event. Hofstra University students

Belinda Darote and Kanisha Kennedy feel the campus Christmas lights give the cold nights a warmer feeling, a feeling of home. “I think that the lights add to our campus a lot. They add a Christmas feel that tells us the holidays and break are right around the corner which I know all students are anxiously waiting for,” said Darote. “Christmas is my favorite

holiday to celebrate. I think that the lights are a great idea and a great way to kick off this holiday season,” said Kennedy.”

Hofstra made this year’s theme: Sharing Children’s Stories. The over two dozen clubs and organizations wanted to put more of their funding towards purchasing a wider variety of crafts, to buy materials to paint murals and build 3D objects to create a Winter Wonderland display in the main dining room. This year,

Student Leadership and Activities Graduate Assistant Ashley Gray had a great deal of involvement in making this holiday season an eventful one. “‘Hofstra Celebrates the Holidays’ is different this year,” said Gray. “Last year student clubs and Greek organizations came together to build a big holiday village for local children to come and play in. This year things have been altered differently and

more money has been spent on gifts and better crafts for our visiting children.” ‘Hofstra for the Homeless,’ a

new club on campus goes to the Saratoga Inn, a homeless shelter located in Jamaica, Queens every Friday to help the kids with their

homework. This Wednesday, students brought the children to Hofstra to do crafts with them. The Kwanza

Celebration took place Monday, Dec. 6 and was sponsored by the Black Student Union. The Chanukah

Community Candle Lighting, sponsored by Hillel, will take place Sunday through Wednesday, Dec. 58, at 5 p.m., in front of the Student Center. A Christmas Mass sponsored by the Campus Catholic Parish will be celebrated on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.

By The Chronicle StaffThe college matchups in The

Hofstra Chronicle started out as a way to compare Hofstra University to schools with similar academic programs. Schools were chosen due to similar size, geographical location, academics, which also included schools from our athletic conference, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). It started with a general curiosity as to how Hofstra compared to Fordham University due to the departure of former men’s basketball head coach Tom Pecora. The Chronicle discovered

that Hofstra and Fordham were comparable, but Fordham had a much better academic reputation. Since Hofstra is still fairly young, just celebrating the 75th anniver

sary, most of the schools in the New York City metropolitan area were founded in the 19th century or earlier. Hofstra originated as an extension of New York University (NYU), which just celebrated its 179th year. The Chronicle saw this as a

way to keep the university and administration honest about its academic improvements. Over the course of these matchups, The Chronicle found that Hofstra compared favorably in many of the comparisons to older schools. But at the same time there were some interesting losses. Hopefully though our readers learned a bit .7&'%$)&+$>&0-%/.$?,5"#/-5%;$!%-$in to a larger national collegiate picture.

anyone can be a carrier,” said Finkelstein. “This is a priority issue and students need to be very aware of how easy it is to bring

them home. Take proper precautions when traveling. I can’t tell you how much I’ve heard don’t put the suitcase on the bed in a hotel.”Finkelstein also had some

advice on keeping the campus bedbug free. Bedbugs often spread by hitching rides on clothing. They jump from host to host when people brush up against

each other in crowds. If you think you might have brought bedbugs back with you, wash or dryclean bedding and affected clothing immediately. Make sure to use hot water and a dryer on the hottest setting. If you think you have bedbugs, call Residential Programs during the day or Public Safety if it’s afterhours.

Hofstra’s School of Education, Health and Human Services announced the opening for the Center of Scholarship, Development and Outreach at the end of November. The mission to “enhance the collaboration of SOEHHS faculty and to promote scholarship and outreach to schools and communities,” as is stated in the mission statement on the University’s website for the Center. “The concept of developing the

center was really a collaboration, a think tank process for scholarly outreach,” says the Director for the Center, Edward Zero. The idea for the center was a “joint effort,” says Zero as he explains that it took the collaboration of representatives from the different schools in Hofstra to successfully begin working on the idea of the center. One of the center’s biggest

initiatives is the NSF (National Science Foundation) Project Based Learning Project. According to Zero “will connect

concepts across disciplines and engage learners in critical and innovative thinking and collaborative problem solving related to real world contexts.” Zero states that work for this grant is basically “done”.

The NYS Statewide Literacy Resource Center, according to information from the NYSED.gov, currently has “proposals to develop, implement and sustain a web based Statewide Literacy Resource Center (SLRC).” In addition, the Graduate

Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation Pilot Program, according to NYSED.gov, states that “the statewide purposes of the Graduate Level Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation Pilot Program are to effectively prepare teachers for high needs schools and increase the retention of these teachers in order to positively impact student growth and achievement.” Each initiative portrayed has

deadlines for the grant in January.Zero feels the center is impor

tant because it will “serve as a tool for faculty” and allow them to “generate money to support research”. Essentially Zero is excited about the resource opportunities this will give Hofstra staff in their endeavors. When it comes to how the

center will fair in the future Zero was clear that he hopes the center will increase in the way they interact within the different departments and gave the example of two different schools coming together to educate the community &,$@!,.,(5.:$:5%#/.(;AB

It also requires the colleges to collect, report and dis

institutions disclose crime statistics based on four factors: where the crime occurred, the type of crime, to whom the crime was reported, and when the crime was reported. Colleges and Universities must disclose reported crime, meaning a crime, which is brought to the attention of a campus security authority or local police by a victim witness, other third party or even the offender. The institution is also required to

disclose crime reports regardless of whether any of the individuals involved in either the crime itself or in the reporting of the crime,

are associated with the institution. Institutions must disclose three general categories of crime statistics: types of offens

I believe this philosophy to be the truth in regard to all prisoners. They served their time, so they should be treated as a normal human; because every normal human makes mistakes. There should be no obstacles present in their lives based on our judgments of them. They were already judged for their crime by a jury of 12, and they have paid their debt. We need to learn to forgive a little more quickly instead of jumping to judgment as our modus operandi.

Sitting down to write this editorial I had every intention of writing about the things I will miss at Hofstra while being abroad this spring. Though, as I was generating my list it began to take a turn. While Hofstra cookies, Music

Fest and entertainingly horrifying public safety alerts are on the list of things I’ll miss, I will not miss the Long Island “snow”. I was recently reading an article on the world’s largest snowman. If anybody on Long Island made a snowman that didn’t look like it was made by Pigpen it would deserve applause. I think snow is the best thing in

the world. Not a vast overstatement. That being said, Long Island snow may be the most

depressing thing in the world. Not a vast overstatement. I didn’t think it was possible for slush to occur before snow even hit the ground, but I was proved entirely wrong freshman year. Slush actually falls from the sky on Long Island. There is no real snow. The world record for World’s

Tallest Snowman is held by Bethel, Maine for their latest snowman completed on February 19, 2008. This snowwoman stood 122’1’’ tall. Now that it’s after )*!35/B,6,3BG#:+#1!3#09.1,!@@C#start thinking about Christmas. But it is such a loaded word in today’s society. Christmas could be seen as an overly commercialized holiday with people lining up at three or four the morning after Thanksgiving just to snag super deals for gifts. Stores put up their Christmas displays as they are taking down their Halloween ones, sometimes even before, in the hopes of creating more shopping days and maybe even a frenzy. Christmas could be viewed

as too secularized. The phrase “Happy Holidays” has replaced “Merry Christmas” in an effort to be more politically correct, and not offend those who don’t celebrate Christmas. Some towns have debates over whether to put up a nativity scene on public ground or to include a menorah and Kwanzaa candles also. As a result of these debates, a public display of a crèche usually has at least a Santa, a snowman and a menorah nearby. Perhaps Christmas is too reli

gious. Many Christians are ever ready to remind others of the true meaning of the holiday, which is to celebrate the birth of their

savior, Jesus Christ. The problem is that Jesus was not born on December 25th at 12:01 AM. We don’t know exactly when he was born because the Bible only gives a few vague references to the reign of King Herod instead 09#!#A,-"*#1+-",.1!"+(#)*+-+#is a clue in a verse in the Gospel of Luke that mentions shepherds tending to their sheep outside at night, which rules out the cold and rainy winter months. With all this squab

bling over what Christmas really means, people seem to forget that the roots of Christmas and a majority of its celebrations can be traced to preChristian times. There are plenty of winter fests that were celebrated around the time of the 25th before Jesus was born. The Romans honored their god Saturn by giving gifts on Saturnalia. The early Germanics celebrated Yuletide as a 12day festival and started the tradition of burning a Yule Log. Pagans celebrate the winter solstice because they believe the sun is reborn on the shortest day of the year. Even the origins of the Christmas tree can be traced to the worship of the ever

green during the long dreary winter. It wasn’t until sometime in the fourth century when the early Christian Church started to celebrate the nativity on December 25th, that the birth of Jesus became linked with the

winter holidays. Even though Christmas means

different things to different people, there’s no denying that ,"#,/#!3#,7D0-"!3"#",7+G#.@@+2#:,"*#family, friends and good cheer. The diversity in how we celebrate

Christmas only adds

to the magic of the season. So

do what you normally do every Christmas – whether it’s going to church, decorating a tree, or going to the movies and eating Chinese food – and be merry. Just don’t forget where the holiday came from.

The third showing of Thursday Nite Live aired last Thursday to a full audience broadcasted from Dempster Hall. Aside from some overly long skits if TNL keeps their writing up they are going to return with a great spring season as well. The December 2 show opened

with a writer’s room sketch featuring Michael Hayden, who delivered laughs as he complained of not receiving the best roles that instead went to fellow cast mate Emmanuel Neris. When a role that perfectly described Hayden’s physical appearance was mentioned it was eventually given to Neris much to Hayden’s dismay.

This overall was one of the most popular sketches due to Hayden’s comedic timing, voice and facial expressions. The second

sketch of the evening involved Neris and fellow cast member Lizzie Parrot who expertly played Barbara Walters in The Position. The sketch was a mock of The View as the group discussed the topic of gay marriage. Dani Letsche brought in some laughs for her impersonation of Elizabeth Hasselbeck as they poked fun at her intelligence and conserva

tive views. Claire Entrup served as a sarcastic Joy Behar while Christina Williams portrayed a hilarious Sherri Sheperd. Overall

the group portrayed the famous women very well and adapted to their individual personalities. Jake Link and

Sarah Whittle were back for TNL News, which proved to be too short of a segment in comparison to the other skits.

The jokes, although funny, were overshadowed by a dramatic movie trailer, starring Link who was tired of being cast in nonserious roles. The trailer had its moments but went on for too

long; I would have liked to hear some more “news.” A “4 Loko” package aired

throughout the one hour show and featured Bennett Tyler who recorded his reaction to drinking a full can in thirty minutes. It was a humorous skit due to the recent ban of the alcoholic beverage in New York and was most relatable to the audience and Hofstra students for its high popularity on campus. Another package featured

music in the style of “The 12 Days of Christmas” that directly mocked Hofstra with rewritten lyrics such as “7 nights of drink!"#$%&'()*&+,-./$%&0"1&'1*23&until I’m 53,” as part of the eight nights of Hanukkah. The song was hilarious and was a favorite

amongst the audience. The song somewhat dragged and could have been set at a faster pace.“Nghbrs,” a Long Island based

rock band served as the musical guest. The numbers they performed were powerful, as the lead singer had a strong voice that carried well. One of the songs featured a smooth piano intro that departed from the band’s louder rock songs.Overall TNL did well on many

of the skits, although some could have been shortened or had better timing. Some skits were slow in the beginning but usually delivered decent jokes and laughs in the end. TNL will return after the break for a spring season.

Dogg’s Hamlet, Cahoot’s Macbeth, was a humorous, yet bizarre combination of Dogg’s Hamlet, which was spoken in a unique code language, known as ‘Dogg,’ and a condensed version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The play took place in Emily Lowe Hall, from Dec 14, and was directed by Ian Poake, a BFA performance major. The play begins with the tap

Later, the ambiguous Hamlet, performed quite accurately by Conor Burke who gave the role of Hamlet a bit of a risible spin, goes through many phases. Similar to Shakespeare’s,

Hamlet, the summary of the story was done fastpaced, and precisely covered the plot, with the addition of exuberant personality from all of the characters. The second half of the play,

Cahoot’s Macbeth, started out in English, but then became puzzling at times when the language revolved back into ‘Dogg.’ The beginning of the play gave

off an ominous spirit, with three witches (Taylor Phillips, Maria Camilo and Peter Previte) who did a miraculous job of interacting with the audience, and creating a spooky feel.Macbeth (Ben Pike) lives in an

apartment that is being inspected by a villainous Inspector (Cassie DeMarco), who tries to shut down the apartment, which winds up failing. Although the inspector’s plot to take down Macbeth failed, DeMarco did a phenomenal job of dominating the second half of the play with her richly robust attitude. Overall, the revival for modern

audience was confusing at times. However, considering the three week time frame in which the play was put together, the energy of the cast members made for a delightfully engaging atmosphere.

Nightmares for a Week- Don’t Die

Did anyone want more halfassed, twangy Gaslight Anthemesque punk? I know I didn’t. Don’t Die suffers from overslick production and aimless songwriting, but most importantly it lacks heart. The reason punk crosses over well with many genres is because the only real tenant of punk is passion. Nightmares for a Week (whose name is a lyrical reference to Jawbreaker, an incomparably better band) are like that dullard of an ex you regret dating, not because of any bad blood, but because the time spent with them was an intellectual waiting room. Species Bender is a nononsense punk record, plain and simple. The infusion of old garage and psychedelic music in their sound adds the requisite amount of sass to separate The Brokedowns from the often homogenous punk scene. It is not very often that the phrase “Ballet thriller” is followed closely with “Masked serial killer” but Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan is just that. Black Swan stars Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers, a supporting member of a major New York City ballet company. As with any successful artist, Nina’s life is completely consumed by dance. Her dedication has kept her living with an incredibly overbearing stage mother, wonderfully played by Barbara Hershey, who has done her best to preserve Nina’s innocence. Mysterious wounds and a bathroom stall purging are quickly shown to establish the physical toll that dancing is taking on Nina. !"#$%&'()*+,-$./-0$(#/1&/')*%#$of the season is a reworking of Swan Lake that features Nina successfully auditioning for both the pure white swan and the wicked black swan. I’m throwing this a bone because while I was reluctant (I literally had to be forced) to watch it, it was actually an interesting take on the typical superhero movie. Kick Ass, literally, is a loser who just happens to have !"#$"%"$&'#(!$"#&)*'+),-./#

Affectionately known in my mind as “the other” Steve Carrel movie that came out over this summer. It gave him a chance to reprise the sillyness of Evan Baxter that we fell in love with

him for in Bruce Almighty, as well as show audiences that there are redeeming qualities in everyone, and that sometimes they just need a little polishing up.

Some may say that this is merely another Angelina Jolie spy movie, but it was actually enjoyable. The action scenes were

loud and choppy, but got the point across. It had a few major plot twists (admittedly, predictable) and set up for a possible sequel.

When this came out in April, I was gushing about it for its theatrical value, but as time went on, I realized that it didn’t get as much attention as it probably deserved. It was possibly brushed off as just another Robert Pattinson

As this is the last issue of The Hofstra Chronicle of, not only the semester, but of the year 2010, I felt that we should make sure we ran the obligatory “best of the year” list. The following is a list of, in this assistant editor’s humble opinion, the best albums of the year 2010.

NationalA combination of masterfully

orchestrated and layered instrumentation and brooding lyrics, High Violet acts as The National’s magnum opus.

Leave it Sweden to provide one of the most promising heirs to the Americana/Folk music tradition.

Sparseness and technical ability come together to create a sparse and masterful album.

One of the most Successful “indie” bands of recent years, Vampire Weekend proves their worth by evolving while keeping their trademark lyrics and rhythmic sound. Smart yet accessible, the album morphs continuously while keeping continuity throughout and remains light throughout.

StevensProving himself once again

to be not only one of the best songwriters of our time, Stevens shows us how expansive his music can be, moving from acoustic and orchestral music to

a more electronic, textural sound.

FireA concept album about subur

ban malaise, Win Butler and company turn modern ailments into a symphonic dissertation on the current state of America. Like the sprawl it dismays over, the album !"#$%&'(&#)%*&%*+",$%-&."/+'%0'(1&in subtle and unexpected ways.

Returning from the wasteland of the mediocre 808’s and Heartbreaks and bitter, televised outbursts, West brings sneering verses and varied collaboration to prove that he’s as awesome as he thinks he is. By bringing in different artists from his own level of stardom, as well as a few indie

surprises, this album plays out as one of the greatest comeback records of recent in recent memory.

If Arcade Fire made a symphony out of suburban malaise, than Titus Andronicus wrote a dissertation on urban outrage. Possibely never before has an album displayed such grit while including a bagpipe solo.

Margot abandoned their orchestrated pop sound for their newest release, exchanging it for a gritty, melodically simple, yet powerful work. Filled with ambig

uous, harrowing lyrics and fuzz laden guitars, the album shows an unexpected evolution.Content ranges from the windy streets of Chicago to the dirty streets of New York City, from the troubles of infedelity to bitter contempt for modern times.

The British band stripped down their jaunty rock sound to create a tasteful and acoustic aesthetic to create a very singular album. 23+'4%&."5&%'!673&)(8&'(*'!)*$739

The band returned to the stage shortly thereafter, Snider apologizing “I feel bad for lying to you. That’s not really the end. We’re gonna play a couple more songs…I’m sorry we lied.” Popular singles Knights and Pachuca Sunrise ended the night as the crowd refused to disperse until the house lights rose. The question with a band like

Minus the Bear is whether an act that relies so heavily on a pedalboard can deliver the live energy their sound demands. Minus the

Bear struck a delicate balance between the science of technical accuracy and the art of live gusto. Snider treated his pedalboard as an instrument unto itself. While some are quick to criticize this aspect, the band’s fans seemed to acknowledge and appreciate it.Closing your eyes, the set

could have been a recording playing in an intensely strobe lit room. Whether this is a criticism or a compliment depends on your priorities as a concertgoer. The band’s tightness was undeniable, and the production quality high. On the other hand, the performance at times lacked the raw energy that often is the reason people attend shows.
