settle the island of Manhattan which they called New Netherland
In 1625 the Dutch, Johan de Laer, wrote about the Hudson River: On this river there is great traffic in the skins of beavers, otters, foxes, bears, minks, wild cats, and the like

The Lenapes were the inhabitants of Mannahatta (Manhattan), translated as “Hilly Island” or “Small Island
According to the Dutch, the Lenapes were aggressive and troublesome.The Lenapes sold Manahattan for trinkets (baratijas) and moved west of the Bronx River
Natives in Manhattan ate a lot of oysters, leaving piles of shells near their settlements. The Dutch named that area Pearl Street.
