Ceramic Keepsake Urns Made by Betty Bongiardina On Saturday, November 1st after the Community Business Meeting, Betty will be displaying and selling

her creative “Spirit Keepers.”

The beauty of urns is that you can keep your loved one close to you after they are gone. Choose a beautiful urn that makes you smile and brings you peace to help you find comfort during a difficult time and over the coming years. Every urn is unique and special, so you can trust that your loved one can rest in peace in an

urn that is attractive and meaningful.

Highlands Fall Garage Sale Saturday, November 15th 8:00 am to 2:00 pm

Advertisements will be placed with the local papers and a large sign put out at our entrance for the week before the event. As you know, even though we advertise that the sale begins at 8:00 a.m. there will be folks who show up early. BE PREPARED. The event will go on rain or shine. Your anti-rain dance may help hold off the showers. Arrow signs will be placed directing people to all areas of the community.

“No Parking This Side” sides will be posted on one side of Callaway and volunteers will be patrol-ling the area to discourage folks from parking on both sides of the street. We need volunteers to do the patrolling. If you’re willing to help for a few hours, please contact Ray Pawlicki or Ken.

For willing sellers, there will be a preview sale the night before from 5:00—7:00 pm for Highlands residents. This means that sellers who want to will prepare their items for viewing on Friday evening as well as Saturday so that neighbors who will be manning their own sales on Saturday (as well as other

residents) have an opportunity to see what you are offering without the chaos of all the outside traffic.

If you have any questions, please give Ken White or Heather Phillips a call.

Sunshine Committee Bake Sale The Sunshine Committee will be selling baked goods on November 15th while the garage sale is in progress. We are asking everyone in the Highlands to help with contributions for us to sell.

Normally profits go to directly support the Sunshine Committee’s charitable activities. However, because of the incredible past generosity of the Highlands residents, we currently have more than enough in our bank to support our current needs. Therefore this year we are holding the bake sale primarily due to popular demand. We intend to take the profits and use them to adopt some families at Christmas, similar to how the Highlands residents have sponsored such charities in the past.

We will again feature snack foods, for example, cookies, brownies, muffins, small loaf cakes, popcorn balls, etc. We will also be selling bags of popcorn and sodas.

Whenever possible please make and/or package your baked goods in portions that are good for two people. (Please no large layer or sheet cakes.) If you put nuts in your baked goods, or the treat is sugarless, please note that information on the packaging.

Some hints for portions: If you make a cake, cutting and frosting it in halves works better for the sale. Cupcakes should be wrapped in pairs. Mini loaves sell better than a single large loaf. Smaller cookies are best grouped at a half dozen per portion.

Don't worry about pricing. We will take care of that. If you have any empty shoe boxes that you don’t need, please drop them off in the craft room. They make great traveling containers for the baked goods.

(Continued on the next page)

Page 8: The Highlands Highlights · 2014. 10. 31. · Advance sale for tickets only. They will be available starting Monday and will be sold thru 10/16. Tickets are $12 per person. The event

If you want to drop off your goods before Friday evening or if your items require refrigeration until Saturday morning, please take them to Barb Geiling’s home. If you are delivering on Friday evening or Saturday, drop your items off in the craft room in the clubhouse. The sale officially opens Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. We would like to have everything in place by then, but will certainly accept goods for sale as long as we are still selling.

If you have any questions, call Barb Gieling or email her at [email protected].

As always we thank you for helping the Sunshine Committee. Without your continued contributions to our fund raisers, we wouldn't be able to do our job effectively.

Highlands Sunshine Committee Members

Attention Sunshine Committee Members: There will be a short meeting on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the craft room of the clubhouse. The meeting will be about the bake sale. Please try to be there. If you can’t attend the meeting but can help with the set up on Friday evening or sale on Saturday, give me a call or send me an email. Hope to see you at the meeting.

Meet Your Highlands Family — Bob & Phyllis Worth

Sharon Newcom

Bob & Phyllis worth became part of our Highlands family in February 2009. They saw the Highlands when they were on vacation after their good friends Nancy and Chick Meech expressed their satisfication with the Dade City area and the Highlands Community. The Worths and Meechs became friends when Nancy and Chick were married in the Worths home church in Billerica, Mass. and the Meechs became members, so their friendship is a long one. Bob and Phyllis were childhood sweethearts and have been married 48 years. They have a daughter Robin, a granddaughter Carolyn, and twin grandsons Justin and Austin who live in North Carolina. Their son Garin, a single dad, lives near Robin in North Carolina with his two sons Owen (13) and Sam (11). Bob and Phyllis are professed “snowflakes” because they spend a lot of time with their grandchildren, who they thoroughly enjoy, not to mention how much it helps Garin.

Bob owned an insurance agency that he sold two years ago to retire. Upon retirement he rescued his pal Atom, a chiweiner, that he is training to be a perfect dog. Bob enjoys classic cars and just sold his ‘68 green Mustang. He likes to build things with wood and has a full complement of “man tools”. And when the opportunity arises, he enjoys playing the organ in church. Phyllis just retired as an assistant to a Dean at Middlesex College in Bedford, Mass. When here in the Highlands Phyllis works out with the Soggy Bottom aerobic class. She likes to garden, crochet, knit and pursues a variety of hand crafts. During their interview, she showed me carnations she had made from cupcake papers. She’s a very talented lady.

It is always nice to match faces to part-time neighbors. All their friends and I are looking forward to the Worths becoming full-time residents.

Touring the Tom and Mary James / Raymond James Financial Art Collection In St. Petersburg on February 11th, 2015

We will car pool. A lunch stop will be included.

Please signup on the sheet on the clubhouse bulletin board

Contact Person: Pat Carey

The Tom and Mary James/Raymond James Financial Art Collection, one of Florida’s largest private art collections, consists of more than 2,400 works of art. It includes original paintings, sculptures and graphics. More than 90% of the collection is owned by Tom James, Executive Chairman of Raymond James Financial, and his wife, Mary James. Mr. James has selected almost every piece of artwork himself. While some of the artists in the collection are now deceased, he believes buying works from living artists helps to sustain them in their profession. The collection is on display at the firm’s corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida. Although the collection began in the late 1950s with predominantly American artists, primarily from Florida, it has grown to include a variety of genres. In the mid-1980s, while on trips to Colorado and New Mexico, Mr. James began to collect Western and Southwestern art. More than half of the collection now consists of Western/Southwestern styles of art, including works by Earl Biss, Glenna Goodacre, Allan House, Dave McGary, Dan Namingha and many members of the Cowboy Artists of America. Wildlife art makes up about 25% of the collection, including works by Matthew Hillier, John Seerey-Lester and Al Agnew. Other genres include Pop, Contemporary, Figurative, Sports Art, and Landscapes.

Andrea McDermott, the Social Committee Travel Chairperson, belongs to a travel club sponsored by Advantage Cruises and Tours to make organized travel events easily available to Highlands residents. The travel club offers many different travel opportunities and the Social Committee has picked several to highlight. Currently on the bulletin board are descriptions for the following:

• 12/1 - 2 — St. Augustine’s Night of Lights ($179) • 1/20 - 23 — New Orleans ($449) • 2/10 - 11 — Sanibel & Captiva Island w/ gambling along the way ($234) • 2/23 - 26 — Biloxi by motor coach (gambling & entertainment) ($222) • 2/26 - 2/28 — Miccosukee Resort & Casino (Calder Race Track & Day trip to Key West) ($359) • 6/9 - 6/16 — 7 night Alaska Cruise from Seattle (starting at $1556)

Check out the bulletin board to see all that is being offered. It’s a great way to travel with friends.

Highlands Choral Rehearsals Will Restart the Second Wednesday (12th) of November

Summer has come to an end so we’ll soon start practicing on Wednesday mornings in the clubhouse library from 10:30 AM to noon. We will be learning numbers to perform for Highlands residents. Ruth True is our conductor and Chris Weegar is our accompanist.

The songs in our repertoire are fun and should create an interesting concert.

If you are interested in joining, please come any Wednesday morning and join the music.

All residents are welcome. No try outs are required.

Highlands Yarn Crafters Fund Raiser

In mid-October tickets went on sale for the raffle of a quilt made by our Yarn Crafters. Sales will continue through the community garage sale in November. The quilt is based on the pattern shown in the picture. Tickets sell for $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing for the quilt will be held after the garage sale.

The Highlands Yarn Crafters makes a variety of afghans and quilts throughout the year that are given away to local charitable organizations such as Heritage Park Nursing Home, Edwinola Assisted Living, and Everyday Blessings for children. They rely on donated yarn and yarn purchased with donated funds. In order to become a little more self-sufficient they are trying this raffle as a fund raiser.

If you are interested in helping, please purchase a couple of tickets. They will be on sale at Saturday Coffee, the Community meeting, or by contacting Jo Basile. Thanks for your help.

From the Highlands Resident Managers Howard and Rita Mathis Office: 352-518-4607

Welcome Home!

It looks like we have about 90% of our residents back home. Glad to see you back and hope you had a great summer where ever you were. This past Monday the Shuffler’s started their play and had a big turnout. Thanks to Marge and Carl Davis.

4-Sided Inspections: As everyone knows the first round of inspections has been completed. Thanks to all homeowners for your understanding of their purpose. We have had lots of residents thank us. We noticed that there are more Smiley Faces this time. As you see we allow 30 days between the first inspection and the second so you have time to correct any issues. If there is something that you need more time to correct, call the office and let us know. Thanks to all for taking pride in our Community.

We are so sorry to see one of our valued employees leave. Eric Martin has accepted a position with the City of Zephyrhills which will allow him a better opportunity for the future for his young family. Eric has made a big difference in the Community. He will be missed. We wish him great success with his new job.

Thanks to Jeff and Linda Bostwick along with Deb Riss for making our annual Golf Scramble and dinner a great success. We had more participation this year and everyone had a great time playing golf and bonding with neighbors and a good dinner to cap it off. Many thanks to our ladies who supplied desserts. We hope next year we can fill the course for a fun filled day.

The annual Garage Sale is getting close — November 15th. Please remember the traffic jam we get on Callaway Boulevard. Our thanks to those who have volunteered to help keep the traffic moving. We suggest to those who need to exit the Highlands during the garage sale period (8-2), that they consider taking their car down to the Golf Club and leave it overnight.

Howard and I would like to thank each of you for all you do to make the Highlands such a wonderful place to live.

Recently I received a charitable check for $155 from the National MahJongg League that is assigned to Everyday

Blessings in Thonotassassa. The donation came from a $2.00 credit per card the League awarded the Highlands MahJongg players because we ordered our 2014 cards as a group, online last January. Helene Steucklen, a volunteer at Everyday Blessings and a member of The Tuesday morning Bible Study group, is arranging a tour of the Everyday Blessings facilities for the Bible Study group.

They will present the check to Everyday Blessings during their tour.

THANKS TO THE MAH JONGG PLAYERS IN THE HIGHLANDS

I am happy to coordinate our whole group renewal once again. A manifest has been sent to me with all your names and membership numbers from last year’s Highlands order. Card prices are the same as last year: $8.00 for a standard print size card, $9.00 for a large print card.

I am accepting payments now through January 3rd. First time orders from new players and/or any players who did not participate in our single order last year can be included in this year’s order.

If you wish to be included in our group order, please put your remittance in an envelope with your name and amount enclosed on it and drop it off at my house anytime before the 3rd. If paying by check, make them out to me because I submit a single payment for all cards. Thanks so much for your participation to help our Everyday Blessings Charity.

• Garage Sale; November 15th from 8 am to 2 pm. Ken White said he put notices in several local papers including the Pasco Shopper and the Laker. He purchased 15 No Parking signs and two additional signs saying that parking is allowed in vacant lots. With the additional signs and advertising costs going up Ken was over budget by $18.00. It was motioned to reimburse him and seconded by Deb Riss. There will be a “preview night” on Friday November 14th from 5 pm to 7 pm. If anyone participating in the garage sale wants fellow residents to get a “first shot” at purchasing items please have your things set up Friday evening before 5 pm. Sue Klinger was concerned about early bird shoppers on the 15th. The gates open at 7 am and there will likely be people here at 7 am. Be prepared.

• Jo Basile wanted to mention that she is crocheting for charity and it would be great if there were donations so yarn could be purchased to make these items.

• Bus trip and tour of Tampa Iternational Airport, November 5th: Pat Carey wanted to remind everyone about this tour. So far there are 20 people signed up. It is a morning tour and parking is $8.00 after the first hour. Lunch will be at Maggiones located at West Shore Mall not too far from the airport.

• Andrea McDermott who it is in charge of travel through the social committee was very upset about the fact that someone had removed all her notices from the community bulletin board. Andrea has decided to resign from that position and she is also cancelling a wine and cheese event she had arranged with the travel company she is working with. That event was supposed to be on November 5. As a post script to this, it was discovered that the travel notices were moved to the “retail” bulletin board and a Walgreens Flu shot notice was put it that place on the community board. Jayne Haas and Lorraine Davenport took the flu shot notice and moved it to the “retail” board and put all the travel notices back on the community board where they belong. (Since this meeting, the bulletin board issue has been resolved and the Andrea has decided not to resign. The wine and cheese event has been re-scheduled, the date to be announced)

• Charlie asked if anyone knew any new information about the golf course. Jayne Haas said that the gentleman that is managing the course for the bank was currently on vacation but when he gets back he is scheduling a meeting with the members. Ken White said that he has been playing the course a lot these past few weeks and thinks the course is in better shape then ever.

• Veterans Day, November 11th: John Schaeffer said there will be a veterans day program starting at 10:30 am with coffee and donuts. Veterans Day this year will also honor and recognize all retired firemen and policeman as well as service veterans.

• Betty Bongiardina wanted everyone to know that she is currently making keepsake cremation urns. She will be setting up a display table at our next community meeting in case anyone is interested in purchasing one.

• Lorraine Davenport wanted to thank any residents that have been supporting the golf course by going to their special nights, Tuesdays are Wing Night and Fridays are Fish Fry.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 am. The next meeting will be on Saturday, November 1, 2014

Jayne Haas, Community Secretary.

The Highlands' Men's Bible Study restarted in September at 7 pm in the library. Our topic and discussion are from the book: "Fruit of the Spirit - 48 Bible Studies." The “fruit of the spirit” is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control which comes from

Galatians 5:22-23. The book may be purchased from Amazon or www.natareajbooks.com.

Should you have any questions, please call Bill Hoff.

Ladies Bible Study

For the past 8 years, women in The Highlands have been gathering to study the Bible. We meet every Tuesday Morning from 10 to 12 o'clock in the clubhouse library.

There, amongst all the books, we learn about the greatest book ever written! We are presently studying Romans and you are most welcome to join us at any time. No books or knowledge of the Bible is required just a

Reducing Redundancy

The two pages normally found in the next section of the newsletter are published quarterly. The information on the two “missing” pages changes infrequently. The two pages contain articles about contributions for causes, name tags, library donations, the form for updating directory information, watering restrictions, trash pickup, submission of newsletter contributions, and the Social Committee’s ticket sales procedures.

If you require any of this information before it is republished, the two pages of note appeared last in the October 2014 newsletter. You can access a copy of that issue and other prior newsletters from our website. http://www.floridahighlands.com Simply click on “Past Issues” in the middle of the home page.
