With this issue many of the Hales familyof Canada have been included in ourHales Directory. Also other Halesfamilies are included as I learn theiraddresses. Welcome to our project –which is to gather information to publisha book showing all of the Hales familiesworldwide including variant spellings. This Newsletter is now sent to over 900Hales families.

The next issue of our HalesNewsletter will include an updated copyof our Hales Directory. In order to makethis edition as accurate as possible I amrequesting your help. This section of our newsletter containsthe “happenings” that I am made awareof between issues. Send me yourannouncements of area reunions,marriages, births, deaths, etcetera, andthey will be included in the newsletter. Contributions of articles for thenewsletter are requested.

Mrs. Eva S. Hales of Grosse PointeWoods, Michigan writes that the father(now deceased) of Alfred Hales, amember of Parliament in Ottawa, visitedEngland and told about a graveyardwhere the Hales were known as the“giant” Hales because they were so tall. No doubt he was referring to the Hales ofWinterton – a family of giants of thisname, who resided at Winterton, RobertHales standing 7' 6" and weighing 34stones 6 pounds (482 pounds). All of hisbrothers averaged 6' 5" and his sisters 6'3" were the offspring of a father standing6' 6" and a mother 6' 3". Reference:Walter Rye, Norfolk Families, pg. 291.

Al and Ginny Hales are leaving LosAngeles temporarily. Al has a partialsabbatical, during which he will bothresearch and teach at the University ofWashington. They will return to LosAngeles next June and Al will resumehis duties at UCLA where he has tenure. Both having PhD. Degrees, Al and hisbrother Stanton are mathematicsprofessors. Al at UCLA and Stanton atPomona.

R. Stanton and Diane Hales – Stanton isthe U.S. Men’s Singles BadmintonChampion, and Diane is the NationalIntercollegiate Women’s SinglesBadminton Champion.

This is Hales Place, Tenterden. It wasbuilt by John Hales, great-grandson ofNicholas de Hales, the common ancestorof the Hales family of Kent and muchEngland. In the early 1300s Nicholashad two sons: Sir Robert de Hales andNicholas de Hales. Sir Robert de Haleswas Prior of the Hospital of Saint John ofJerusalem in England, Admiral of theKings Fleet, and Treasurer of the KingsExchequer. He was beheaded by rebelsduring the Wat Tyler rebellion and diedwithout issue.

Nicholas de Hales, son of Nicholas,became the heir and was the father ofThomas Hales of Hales Place near HighHalden, Kent, England. I do not have asketch of Hales Place, High Halden, butit is described as follows: “Hales Place isan ancient residence embosomed infoliage about one mile east from thechurch of High Halden and is eminent ashaving been the original seat of theHales, who in the reign of Henry VIIIremoved to Tenterden.”

It appears that John Hales is thecommon ancestor of the Hales families ofKent, Oxford, and Hertsford, England. His brother Thomas appears to be thecommon ancestor of the Hales family ofLincoln and Warwick, England. Hisother brother Henry appears to be the

common ancestor of the Hales family ofEssex, England. So from the originalhome near High Halden the Hales familyspread over all of England.

(Note: The Norfolk Hales familyappears to be distant cousins).

Sir Edward Hales, “through prudentmarriages,” became the secondwealthiest man in Kent, England, with ayearly income of £6,055 and owningproperty scattered throughout Kentaccording to C. W. Chalkin, SeventeenthCentury Kent, page 197. He is referredto as Sir Edward Hales of Woodchurchand owned the arms seen on the cover ofthis Newsletter. He will be the subjectof a more complete sketch in a futureNewsletter.

Shown on the next page is the great

mansion house at Hackington, aboutone mile north of Canterbury, Kent,England. It was built circa 1227 whenArchbishop Stephen Langton made hisbrother Simon Archdeacon ofCanterbury, and helped him build aresidence. It was later rebuilt by SirRoger Manwood from the ruinous condition it was in when itwas presented to him in 1562 by QueenElizabeth.

Of this mansion, Cousins, in his Tour,says that “If ever it be finished, it will be

more fit for the residence of a monarchthan for a simple country gentleman.

The Hales family retained possessionof the old house until, in 1759, SirEdward Hales thought fit to buildhimself and his successors the mansionknown thenceforth as Hales Place,Hackington, which stood on risingground a little to the north of the oldPlace House. The new mansion beingbuilt, Sir Edward proceeded to pull downthe old house.

Hales Place, Hackington, later wasextended by the Jesuits, and was usedas a college. The Jesuits left in 1928 andthe house and estate fell into speculativehands, and now Hales Place and SaintMary’s College, as the Jesuits calledtheir extension, hve been swept awaininto oblivion (see Archaeologia Cantiana,Vol. 45, page 201).

Sir Edward Hales purchased ChilsonManor for his son Samuel from JohnHales, the son of William Hales.

Chester Pratt Hales. Chester PrattHales of 1210 Hardesty, Kansas City,Missouri 64127 passed away FridayJuly 17,1970 at Camp Sharon, GravoisMills, Missouri following a heart attack.He was 69 years of age.

Chester Pratt Hales was born onApril 11, 1901 in Franklin, Texas, the sonof James Wesley ane Mary Etta DuboseHales. He was a retired postman. Afterhe ret1red he worked for the policedepartment. During the summer he waslife guard at the families church camp atCamp Sharon. At the time of his death hewas working with the young peoplewhom he loved so much.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. ClaraHales of the family home; his daughter,Miss Lavonne Hales, St. Louis, Missouri;his son, Rev. C. Delon Hales, Lajunta,Colorado; his mother, Mrs. Mary Hales,Chico, California; one brother, AlbertHales, Chico, California; two sisters:Miss Ruby Hales and Mrs. Ethel Frame,both of Chico, California; and threegrandchildren: David, Debra, and Janis.

William George Hales. William GeorgeHales passed away on July 22, 1970 atPlymouth, Devon, England. He was bornon November 10, 1896, the son of Williamand Mary Heywood Hales. He wasmarried in 1926 at Shoeburyness, Essex,England to Eveline Susie Church ofGreys, Essex, England. He is survived byhis wife and his son John Stuart Hales of770 New York Ave. Apt. 6E, Brooklyn NY11203.

Reid Mendenhall Hales. In the shade ofa lone shade tree on August 22, 1970Reid Mendenhall Hales was laid to restjust 30 feet from the graves of hisparents at the Spanish Fork, UtahCemetery. He died on August 19, 1970just 13 months to the day when his sonRaymon was killed in Viet Nam.

Reid Mendenhall Hales was born onJune 22, 1902, at Spanish Fork, toWilliam Parley and Mary AnnMendenhall Hales. He married MaxineDavis on Dec. 12, 1930. She predeceasedhim. He married Zora Draper on October25, 1934, in the Salt Lake City LDSTemple.

Reid Mendenhall Hales, a 100%honest man, was a hard worker, hisfamily was his treasure. He was a pastPresident of the Mapleton, Utah Lion'sClub. Former Mapleton City Councilman,farmer and trucker. He hauled coal fromCarbon County – 40 hard mountainousmiles – no matter what the weather. Healso was employed by the PleasantGrove Canning Company keeping theirmachinery running.

He is survived by his wife Zora of the

family home; son Blaine D. Hales ofMapleton; son Parley Boyd Hales ofChicago, Illinois; son Merrill M. Hales ofPalo Alto, California; daughter Mrs. Gene(Doris) Rose of West Jordan, Utah; sisterMrs. Henrietta Harmer of Provo, Utah;sister Mrs. Farrel Ancel of Los Angeles,California; sisters Mrs. Blanche Lee, andMrs. LaVerne Cowley both of Hollywood,California; sister Mrs. Velma Snow ofLong Beach, California; and 15grandchildren.
