NewLEDsigns informre-sidents!You may have noticed something newin Green Run. We now have four newLED signs located at the corner ofHolland Road and Lynnhaven Parkway,
on Rosemont Road around the corner
from the Boys and Girls Club, on South
Independence across the street fromGreen Run High School, and at the
corner of Princess Anne and LynnhavenParkway. The masonry LED signs
are part of the ongoing beautificationof Green Run and will be virtuallymaintenance free. They were designed
to not only mark the boundaries of the
neighborhood, but also to broadcast
information about Green Run events to
residents and passers-by. The number
of messages that can be posted on the
LED signs is nearly unlimited, whichwill greatly reduce the cost of sending
out expensive mailings. Residents willbe informed of meeting and event
dates, sports information, and volunteeropportunities. Q

Here cometheWatchD.O.G.SpThrough the program, students arebeing sent a powerful message thateducation is important and that dadswant to be involved and supportive.
Everyone was excited when they heardthe Watch D.O.G.S.@ were coming toParkway Elementary School this past
month, and we're not talking protective,four-legged canines!
WATCH D.O.G.S.@ which stands forDads of Great Students, is an innovativeprogram being used by schools across
America. Its purpose is to positivelyimpact the lives of students throughthe committed involvement of fathersand father-figures. The goal is to havedads spend at least one day during theacademic year at the school activelyengaged in their child's education. Thisis a wonderful opportunity for dads, granddads, uncles, or step-dads to spend
some time with their children at schooland experience a typical school day. Itis also an opportunity for students to
see a strong male presence representedin their school. Through the program,
students are being sent a powerfulmessage that education is importantand that dads want to be involved andsupportive. This is the debut year for theprogram at Parkway Elementary School.
Karen Clevinger, Title I ReadingResource Teacher and Parent Partnerat Parkway Elementary School, worked with PTA President and
'TOP DOG" John Sartin (Green RunHome Resident), to increase parent
involvement at Parkway. To kick offthe program, dads were invited to jointheir children at school for apizzadinner and an informational meetingexplaining the goals of the program.
The D.O.G.S. then signed up for a date
to spend at the school. Sartin, fatherto two Parkway students (Jamir 8 andJadin 6) announced, "The dads Ioveitl They are being recognized by theirkids'friends in the halls, at lunch, andin the classrooms. They are enjoyingtheir interaction with the children. We've even had dads sign up foradditional days since they hadsuch a good time."
Dads, wearing their WAICHD.O.G. S.@ t-shirts, begintheir day assisting with busduty before moving intothe classrooms to workwith students or to facilitateactivities. They have an
opportunity to visit their ownchildren's classes, to participatein PE activities, help monitorthe cafeteria, and makedismissal run more smoothly.Nicholas Conway (Green RunHome Resident) has volunteeredon numerous occasions, evenplaying the role of Santa atParkway's first "Cocoa withSanta Night" in December.Nicholas was recently shadowedby the Beacon for an article onParkway's Watch D.O.G.S.@
which was published onFebruary 3, 2011. C

Take astandagainstcnmeMaking your home safer fromcrime doesnt always mean
having to install expensivealorms and securiLy systems.
Actually, effe ctiv e homesecurity starts with properlyIocked doors and windows,well-lit entryways and the
community involvement of an
active Neighborhood Watch
connection.
WHAT DOES A NEIGHBORHOODWATCH DO?A Neighborhood Watch is neighborshelping neighbors. They are extraeyes and ears for reporting crime and
helping neighbors. Members meet theirneighbors; learn how to make theirhomes more secure, watch out for each
other and the neighborhood, and reportactivity that raises their suspicions to thepolice or the Watch Coordinator.
WHO CANBE INVOLVED?Any resident can join-young and
old, single and married, renter and
homeowner. Even the busiest ofpeople can belong to a NeighborhoodWatch-they too can keep an eye outfor neighbors as they come and go. All ittakes is involvement to sign up members, keeping up-to-date information on newresidents and making special efforts toinvolve the elderly, working parents, andyoung people.
HOWDO I JOIN?Joining Neighborhood Watch is simple.Just provide your name, address, phonenumber and email address to the BlockCaptain and you have become a member. It's that simple. You'll then receive emailupdates about crimes and suspiciousbehavior near you-and you will be able
to alert your neighbors and police aboutsuspicious behavior you see.
IS THERE AN EXISTINGNEIGHBORHOOD WATCH ON MYSTREET?To flnd out if there's already a watchon your street, send an email with youraddress to [email protected]. Butdon't worry-if there is not already an
active watch on your street, starting one
is easy.
IF THERE ISN'TALREADYAWATCH ON MY STREET. HOWCAN I START ONE?If you don't already have aneighborhood watch on your street,
we can help you bring together yourneighbors to organize onel All we need
are one or two concerned neighbors toget the ball rolling. Together we can
help organize a small planning meetingof neighbors to discuss needs, the levelof interest, and possible communityproblems. Ready to get started? Callus at (757) 427-2600 or email [email protected].
Once eighty percent (80%) of theresidents on your street agree toparticipate in the Neighborhood Watchprogram, the City will install a21" x21" reflective sign for each watch at theentrance to your street. G

A CIP is a mandatory comprehensive
and strategic plan. It includes identifyinga portion of the income received each
year and placing that amount in areserve fund (savings) to spread out the
costs associated with necessary futureinvestments in our community. CIP also
includes planning and identifying the
major projects, generally costly projects,
over multiple years.
Just a few examples of CIP projects
include: pool maintenance and
renovations, monument signs, facilitiesmaintenance and renovations, roads and
parking paving projects, and equipmentpurchases required for the day+o-daymaintenance of Green Run.
CIP enables the Association to spread
out the costs associated with these
typically expensive projects or purchases
over multiple years. CIP reduces andprevents the adverse effects from these
necessary and costly planned projects
and investments from impacting the
budget of the current year.
Failure to adequately fund CIP wouldresult in adversely impacting current andfuture assessments, and incurring costlydebt that must be repaid.
Many questions that you have mightalready be on the Green Run web site,greenrun.org.
