The government should control the amount of violence in films and on television in order to decrease the level of violent crimes in the society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Prompted by some incidents of television and film-induced crimes, the issue of whether the government should control the amount of violence in media forms has been a contentious discussion. Views on the topic vary greatly. In my opinion, the violence in different media forms should rightly be reduced.

Some people claim that the practice of limiting violence in mass media is a violation of the people’s freedom of speech. For example, some films contain some violence, but they reflect the things that take place around us. Rather than product negative effects on the audience, to some extent, these films educate them. Furthermore, violence in films or on television programs cultivates people’s senses of crisis and responsibility, which makes them and the police work better for public security. Consequently, it is irresponsible and foolish to blame the media for the violence in our society.

On the other hand, those in favor of censorship in media argue that violence is detrimental to the audience’s psychology. Taking fantasy for reality, people can become aggressive and eccentric. In addition, violence has negative impacts on the stability of the society. Research findings reveal that 60 percent of crimes are committed by teenagers after watching violent films or television programs. Teenagers are vulnerable and immature that they cannot judge whether what they see in mass media is right or not. As an illustration, a boy killed his younger sister in Australia because he imitated the violent scenes from television programs.

In my opinion, the disadvantages of controlling the amount of violence in media outweigh the advantages. But I believe the government should specify the amount of violence that programs should have. The parents and teachers of children then have the responsibility to guide their children and help them to distinguish right from wrong when they watch violent programs.
