Bangladesh provides the world with a wealth like Jute, the golden fibre. The fertile land, direct sunlight and its
heat, heavy moonsoon rainfall, combining together have made Bangladesh a country of Jute, enabling her to
produce the finest natural fibre.
Although, Bangladesh is one of the principle producers of Jute, but it is also grown in India, Thailand,
Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam, Brazil. Nevertheless, Bangladesh enjoys almost a monopoly of this Jute fibre on a
commercial scale. She exports around 80% of her produce as Raw Jute and Jute Products. The Jute spinning
and composite industry located all over the country and export finished goods in the form of Hessian, Sacking,
CBC, Yarn/Twine, diversified Jute products, etc.
Jute occupies a key position in the economy of Bangladesh. The welfare of the entire nation, people and the
overall development of the economy itself depends to a large extent on Jute. Jute is the most important cash
crop for Bangladesh. It brings cash money to over 2 million farmers, employs more than 3, 00,000 people in
industrial sector and trade. Foreign export earnings through export of Raw Jute and Jute products exceeds
USD: 1 billion in a year.

Jute, a natural fibre typically known as the GOLDEN FIBRE is grown in abundance throughout the territory
of Bangladesh. It is believed without any doubt that Jute has occupied the globe market place for quite a while
as a packaging material for its unique properties. Jute is natural, environmentally friendly, biodegradable,
versatile, durable, reusable and free from health hazards. It is considered the “FIBRE OF THE FUTURE”,
and is the cheapest and strongest among other natural fibres.
Jute is a natural fibre from vegetable origin with silky and golden shine. Its scientific name is CORCHORUS.
Although there are quite a lot of number of species of jute available (approximately 40), out of which only
two species have got its main real commercial value as well as industrial use which internationally
named CORCHORUS CAPSULARIS L. (commonly known as White Jute) and CORCHORUS
OLITORIUS L. (commonly known as Tossa/Traditional Jute). There is another type which is known
as MESHTA which is the natural substitute of jute.
This golden fiber is inexpensive and produced from the outer coating of the plant’s stem. It has low
extensibility, high tensile potency which ensures better breathability of fabrics. Its eco-friendliness and
reusability are the reasons to be one in all the foremost versatile natural fibers used for various purposes like
packaging, agricultural textile and non-textile sectors. The flexibility of blending with any other fibers in
manufacturing process makes it the second most vital vegetable fibre next to cotton in terms of usage,
availability, international utilization and fabrication.
The fibers are off-white to brown, and 1–4 meters (3–13 feet) long. Jute is also called "the golden fiber" for its
color and high cash value. It is one of the few crops which can be grown in the monsoon season, and can be
rotated with rice to restore the soil fertility and structure. The leaves of jute plants enrich the fertility of the
soil for sustained agriculture, and have good nutrition value as vegetables. The suitable climate for growing
jute is warm and wet climate. Temperatures from 20˚C to 40˚C and relative humidity of 70%–80% are
favorable for successful cultivation. Jute requires 5–8 cm of rainfall weekly, and more during the sowing time.
Soft water is necessary for the jute production.
Jute is a natural cellulosic fiber containing alpha-cellulose in the range of 58-64% and non-cellulosic
constituents, namely, hemicellulose (20-24%), lignin (12-14%) and traces of pectins, proteins, waxes,
minerals and coloring matters. This makes jute partly fibrous and partly non-fibrous.
Jute has proven to be a versatile fiber. The traditional jute products are sacking, hessian and carpet backing
cloth. Jute can also be used as a raw material substitute for wood in the pulp and paper industry. Apart from its
traditional use as a packaging material, it is also used as a host of other useful items such as fabric of gorgeous
textures, cushion covers, curtains, screens, bed spreads, upholstery and other home furnishings.
The world is going green. Hence, most of the developed and also the developing countries have banned or
going to ban the use of polythene bags as it is too harmful for a sustainable environment. Eco-concerns drive
demand for biodegradable bags on the global market, giving rise to the exports of shopping jute bags from
Bangladesh, the finest jute grower of the world. Jute fiber is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and thus
environment friendly. On the other hand, use of jute sticks as fuel and fencing material as substitute for wood
prevents deforestation. Therefore, the given increased global concern for the environment, the future prospects
for jute remains high.
About Jute
12
The Golden Fibre Trade Centre Ltd. (Market Research & Promotion Department)
Jute & Environment Environmental concern has become one of the key issues of urgent attention to the mankind. The devastating
and often irreversible impact of change in the world environment and the subsequent imbalance had assumed
serious dimension. The global community has never before faced a more formidable and complex challenge.
Among those, deforestation and soil erosion are two critical areas which are causing concern to all. Consumer
buying preferences continue to trend strongly towards natural products. People are reacting to the national
concern with pollution and toxicity.
Jute and Kenaf, two important bast fibre crops, have a great relevance to the problems of erosion and
deforestation. For centuries, these fibres are being used as a traditional packing material. Being biodegradable,
Jute causes no pollution. As renewable raw materials, these fibres are fully compatible with the environment
and can provide long term solution to the pressing global problems.
Grading of Jute The quality of Jute fibres produce is not uniform. It varies from place to place and season to season. The
topography of the area, the nature of soil and water, seasonal rainfall, humidity, culture practice followed in
growing, methods used in retting, extraction of fibre, washing, drying, storage, etc. are factors that determine
the yield and quality of jute fibre.
Basis of Grading The grading of Jute fibre is done on the basis of quality, which is judged by its spin ability and its subsequent
behavior in the manufacturing process of the various types of goods of both common products and specialties.
In the determination of the spinning properties, the following characteristics of the fibre are taken into
account.
(a) Length, strength, color, lustre and weight,
(b) Such general qualities as softness, smoothness, distinctness and uniformity of the fibre,
(c) Proportion of cuttings, hard-centered fibre and harsh crop ends,
(d) Proportion of faults such as roots, barks, sticks, specks, knots runners and water marks.
These characteristics generally vary according to the variety of Jute (White or Tossa) and the areas where it is
grown. Soil composition, rainfall and weather conditions and quantity and quality of retting water vary widely
in the different Jute growing districts. Soil and climate influence the growth of the plant and hence affect the
length, strength and uniformity of the fibre. The retting process determines the color, lustre and strength and
the proportion of root, bark etc. Jute steeped in clean and flowing water will have a good color and lustre; if it
is steeped in muddy or stagnant water, the color will be dull or dark.

Method of Jute Cultivation The Cultivation of jute depends on climate, land, man and various inputs which are briefly mentioned:
Climate Jute is grown in any tropical climate. However, a damp and warm climate and yet not incessant rainfall is the
essential condition of successful cultivation of Jute Crop. Such hot humid climate along with well-drained soil
is must for Jute cultivation. Temperature ranging from 70 ͦF-100 ͦF and relative humidity 70%-80% are
favorable for growing Jute. Two or Three inches of rain fall during sowing period and at weekly interval
through appear to be sufficient for the growth of plant.
During the growth period, alternate heavy rains and sun-shine helps vigorous growth. The annual rain fall of
70-80 inches during the month of March, April, May and June, the actual growing period, are essential for
good growth.
Soil With the exception of rocky laterite and poor sandy soils, all soils are adapted for Jute cultivation, rich loam,
of course gives the best result. The long and deep inundation causes poor quality of Jute fibre. Jute fibre
should not be grown continuously in the same soil. It must be rotated with rice, sugarcane etc. On continuous
cultivation, the yield of fibre is reduced and plants also become susceptible to stem rot and various other
diseases. This occurs particularly in the high lands.
Time of Planting In general, Capsularis Jute (White) is sown before the Olitorius (Tossa) Species. Since most of the varieties
are sensitive to photo period, the earlier planting gives higher yield. The rate of growth and yield of fibre in
Capsularis Jute sown after May 16th and Olitorius Jute after June 15th progressively decreases. The most
favorable time for planting ‘White Jute’ is between end of March to end of April, whereas ‘Tossa Jute’ grows
best when planted between April 15 to May 15. For large seed production, sowing may be done between June
15th to July 15th.
Weeding Jute crop is infested with large number of weeds. They need to be removed very carefully. Because without
weeding no Jute crop worth the name can be raised. The growth rate of Jute for the first 5 weeks after sowing
is slow. Weeding are done at least 3 times within month and a half from the date of sowing. In most cases,
farmers attend 4-5 weeding. Weeding operation is done by hand and has proved to be more effective than the
use of chemical weedicides.
Growing Time Jute is a 6 month duration crop. It may be harvested within 4 months if necessary and for seeds it requires 8
months. It is a summer crop and loves the tropical heat.
Harvesting Jute can be harvested in any time after it is 90 days old until the seeds are mature. However, the proper time
for harvesting is when the fruits have just commenced to form. When harvested too early, the yield is less and
somewhat weak, though fibres are white and glossier. Delayed harvest results in coarser and rough fibre
though slightly heavier.

The Golden Fibre Trade Centre Ltd. (Market Research & Promotion Department)
Jute is grown throughout the whole country in plenty. Bangladesh saviors an agro-ecological comparative
advantage in terms of jute production as it acts as a drainage basin of massive rivers being presented with soil
and availability of non-stagnant water for jute retting.
The jute growing areas are broadly divided into three regions:
Jat Area (Brahmaputra Alluvium) This area consists of parts of the districts of Dhaka, Mymensingh, Tangail and Comilla of Bangladesh. These
areas are often flooded during the year and thus fresh slits are carried to these areas which are very useful for
jute cultivation. Jat area is renowned for highest quality jute fibers. According to commercial gradation, the
best quality Jute, the Jat type, grows in the area.
District Area (Ganges Alluvium) Kushtia, Jessore, Khulna, Rajshahi, Pabna and Dhaka districts are the parts of this area. The soils are in the
alkaline side of neutrality. The feature ranges from clay loam to light loam, color being gray to dark gray. The
type of Jute grown in this area is known as District Jute, which is next to Jat in order of quality. There are two
kinds of district jute namely, “Hard district” and “Soft district”. Hard district is relatively better than the soft
district in terms of quality. District jute stands second in terms of quality.
Northern Area (Teesta Silt) This area constitutes parts of districts of Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra and Sirajganj. The soil is sandy and has
lower moisture retention capacity. Soil reaction is in the acidic side of neutrality. Northern jute considered
lowest in terms of quality.
