The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo were on hand to lend support to the Sounds of Young Philadelphia (SYP), a program that provides extra funding and program offerings to students from low- and middle-income families. Initially funded by a three-year grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, SYP received support from Gala donors to continue the program into the current year. Individuals made gifts ranging from $125 to support one student’s band coaching, public performances, and college counseling, to $1,000 to support two students’ financial aid subsidy for an entire year of lessons, ensemble classes, and workshops. We are grateful to Delaware Investments for committing to a major sponsorship of the program this year. Auditions were held this fall to add 26 new students to the program at all branches. This year, SYP is up and running with monthly college counseling sessions, a second round of auditions, and a new music technology course, MusicLab@Settlement, that developed out of a pilot program offered to SYP students. and of Settlement Music School on May 6 at Settlement’s 107th Anniversary Gala.

Our SYP students had eventful summers ranging from attending an organ camp at the Curtis Institute of Music to starting a multi-year summer camp program taking place in cities all over the country, geared to minority students interested in pursuing MD/PhD programs.

Auditions were held this fall to add 26 new students to the program at all branches. This year, SYP is up and running with monthly college counseling sessions, a second round of auditions, and a new music technology course, MusicLab@Settlement, that developed out of a pilot program offered to SYP students.

The Future Sounds Amazing

“We first offered music technology to show students a different side of music,” says, Karin Orenstein, director of the Wynnefield Branch. “The response was so enthusiastic, and the students created such amazing work, that we knew we had to expand the course so the students could dive even deeper into the technology. This type of program is so important because it fuels creative expression and allows teens to explore music in a way that is very relevant to how they consume music with their peers.”

To support the Sounds of Young Philadelphia program, please contact Victoria Genuardi Edwards at [email protected] or 215-320-2693. If you know of a student who would benefit from this program, please contact Adam Johnston at [email protected] or 215-320-2681.

The following pages are filled with stories about happenings at our community branches: new program offerings, a major renovation project, accomplishments by our students and faculty, and more. Reading these stories, you get a sense of the energy filling our studios, halls, and lobbies.

As we expand our programming to serve more students and families throughout the city and region, we are so fortunate to do work

that touches and enriches the lives of so many people both within the walls of our Settlement branches and far beyond. Many new off-site partnerships have taken shape over the past several months: Settlement is now offering Children’s Music Playshop classes and teacher training workshops through Diversified Community Services, a social-service agency in the Point Breeze neighborhood of South Philadelphia; we are managing the music program at Father Judge High School in Northeast Philadelphia; members of our faculty are teaching and giving pre-concert performances at the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Family Concert series; and we are providing opportunities to children under the care of the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services.

These partnerships are built on the foundation of Settlement’s long history in the community and our role as a leader and as a major resource in helping others to build successful music programs.

With these partnerships springing up all over the city and a wave of national attention focused on Philadelphia, I am pleased to welcome the National Guild for Community Arts Education and its National Conference to Philadelphia this fall. Settlement is a founding member of the National Guild, and I am proud to serve on its Board of Trustees. The Conference for Community Arts Education is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our city and the communities we serve, to collaborate with peer institutions, and to share knowledge and ideas for educators and administrators from across the country to take back and implement in their own organizations and hometowns.

As part of the fabric of this vibrant arts community, a sector that generates $3.3 billion in economic activity and provides over 40,000 jobs in the greater Philadelphia area, Settlement’s staff is pleased to showcase our School and our extraordinary community of artists and educators. I would also like to recognize that all of the work we do is possible because of our outstanding faculty and the wonderful work they do in bringing music and the arts to the lives of thousands of students every year.

As we continue to work towards better understanding the needs of the students and families we serve throughout the region, I look forward to working with our faculty, staff, and our extraordinary volunteers and Board members to create even more opportunities for access and to build even more innovative programs to bring music to the forefront in Philadelphia.

Warmly,

One of Nancy Halpern’s most treasured memories is of performing Mahler’s Second Symphony (“Resurrection”) at the Academy of Music as a singer with the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, under the direction of Claudio Abbado. “The critics all said—it just shimmered, and you could hear a pin drop!” That was in 1972, and her time spent singing with the Mendelssohn Club also brought her to Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center, and many places in between.

Nancy was a transplant to Philadelphia working in Information technology, in an era where, as a woman, she was a pioneer. She found her home in singing with the Mendelssohn Club and in making glorious music with fellow community singers. She treasured decades of Wednesday nights coming to Settlement Music School’s Mary Louise Curtis Branch in Queen Village. “When things got tight with schedules, between work and personal life, singing was what I held on to—I had to do it! It was where I had a group activity and was part of a team—and it transported me.”

When it came time to consider the legacy she wanted to leave behind to honor the role that music has played in her life, Nancy thought of her Wednesday evenings at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch, and the children she would see in the halls on the way to their lessons. She reached out to Settlement to inquire about making a bequest to support children needing financial aid.

With language in place and finalized by her attorney, Nancy is now a member of the Cadenza Society, a growing group of committed supporters who have included Settlement in their estate planning. “Music became a part of my life when I was young and it built me, as a performer and as an audience member. Settlement Music School is a pure educational experience that children can have access to, and where there are so many opportunities. That is a wonderful thing, and it should always be supported.”

To find out about leaving a legacy through estate planning, please contact Amelia Schmertz, Director of Development, at 215-320-2682 or [email protected].

Nancy Halpern was inspired by the students she saw during weekly visits to the Mary Louise Curtis Branch for rehearsals with the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia.

The 78th Conference for Community Arts Education will be held November 11-14, 2015 at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown, bringing together more than 600 leaders from over 300 community arts education organizations nationwide to explore ways to amplify the impact of arts education,

garner greater support for those efforts, and transform our communities for the better.

“We are thrilled to be in Philadelphia for this year’s National Conference for Community Arts Education, and to be able to showcase the remarkably rich and innovative arts education work being done in the area,” says Jonathan Herman, executive director for the National Guild of Community Arts Education. “We could not ask for a community with stronger vision for, commitment to, or impact in providing quality arts education for all, and we can’t wait to share that energy and expertise with the national arts education community. “

Learn more about the conference at www.communityartsed.org, and follow the conference hashtag #ConfCAE for updates via social media.

Celebrating Arts Education in Philadelphia and Nationwide

Executive Director Helen Eaton has been asked to participate and lead a number of panels and discussions throughout the Conference. In addition, Settlement staff will be featured in the following sessions.

The Infinite Possibilities of Change: Spark Innovation at Your OrganizationThursday, November 12 | 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Learn how Settlement is intentionally innovating for growth and expansion through a systemic approach to identifying growth opportunities, designing and launching new concepts, predicting success rates of new offerings, and leveraging investment for further innovation. Settlement’s work with Innosight was featured in the December 2014 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

Strategic Planning and CapitalizationSaturday, November 14 | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

During a site visit to the Mary Louise Curtis Branch, learn how Settlement’s leadership team crafted a highly successful strategic and capitalization plan that supported its mission and built a stronger balance sheet and discuss how this process can be effective for organizations of all sizes.

SETTLEMENT AND THE PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA TEAM UP

Settlement Music School faculty will be leading interactive music instruction sessions preceding the Philadelphia Orchestra’s outstanding series of Family Concerts.

“Settlement Music School is excited to bring our special brand of high-quality music education directly to concertgoers of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Family Series,” says Adam Johnston, Settlement’s Community Engagement Manager. “Our hope is that the connections we foster with these families will create more and better opportunities for children of the region to engage with Settlement, leading to an even more musical Philadelphia.”

The concerts start at 11:30 AM, and the Pre-Concert Adventures will begin approximately one hour before each concert.

The Camden Branch of Settlement Music School is now located at the Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy, a magnet school for grades 6 through 12 in the Camden City School District.

Over the summer, the Camden Branch relocated to Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy (CAMVA), formerly known as Creative Arts High School, to better serve our families in the city of Camden and throughout South Jersey. Close to Interstate 676 in the Morgan Village neighborhood of South Camden, CAMVA is part of the Camden City School District, a magnet school that draws students in grades 6 through 12 from all parts of the city.

Pianos and other instruments moved from the former branch building on Market Street to CAMVA over the summer, and individual instruction and classes began at the new location in September. The former location in downtown Camden is in the process of being sold to Volunteers of America, a national non-profit affordable-housing organization that plans to use the building for all of its administrative offices.

CAMVA’s considerable resources were on display at Open House events in June and October: a spacious lobby and classrooms, wide hallways, a dance studio, and school’s large auditorium, which will now host Settlement’s performance hours

and student recitals in addition to CAMVA’s frequent and well-regarded drama and musical theater performances.

Dr. Davida Brockington-Coe—principal at CAMVA, Settlement alumna, and former piano student of David Shunskis at the Mary Louise Curtis Branch—envisions considerable collaboration between the two schools, with Settlement faculty members aiding in instructing CAMVA students and having CAMVA students take part in individual instruction and ensembles through Settlement.

“It’s a win-win situation for both groups,” she says.

Dr. Brockington-Coe and Branch Director Clayton have worked together closely throughout the many stages of the move, and Settlement is currently offering programs at CAMVA on Monday and Wednesday evenings and during the day on Saturdays. “We are excited about the opportunity for deeper collaboration with CAMVA,” Clayton says. “Now that we’re in a neighborhood, and Camden is really a city of neighborhoods, I look forward to welcoming more of our neighbors to our Settlement family.”

GERMANTOWN RENOVATIONS BEAUTIFY THE NEIGHBORHOODFor the first time in many years, the front door of the Germantown Branch facing Germantown Avenue has served as the building’s main entrance since early summer. This change in routine is due to a major renovation project occurring on the north and south sides of the building.

The renovations will solidify the branch’s role as an anchor institution along Germantown Avenue while benefiting the branch’s closest neighbors: an expanded parking lot will reduce traffic on nearby streets, and an innovative stormwater management system, including a rain garden, will help to ease the impact of storm runoff on neighboring properties.

Improvements at Germantown represent a $2.4 million capital project which has included government funding—$1 million from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and $140,000 through Philadelphia’s Stormwater Management Incentive Program—and funding from the William Penn Foundation, the Connelly Foundation, Gray Charitable Trust, McLean Contributionship, Presser Foundation, the Nonprofit Finance Fund, and individuals.

Settlement has also worked with a large number of local organizations on the project, including the Germantown Restoration CDC, Faith Community Development Corporation, Germantown Community Connection, and West Central Germantown Neighbors, for the betterment of the community at large.

Upon completion, in addition to a large, landscaped parking lot, the Branch will welcome visitors with a beautiful exterior space, including a canopy shaped like a piano lid and architectural elements designed to evoke piano keys. This fabulous effort is the first step in reinvigorating the Germantown Branch both inside and out, with fundraising already underway for additional interior renovations as well as an outdoor performance space and playground.

“The entire neighborhood benefits from this improvement,” says Eric Anderson, Director of the Germantown Branch, adding that neighbors have been “patient and understanding” throughout construction. “Our families are excited about the upgrades and the benefits they will have for the branch.”
