Executive Summary

• This is the result of TERENA Survey on The Future Roles of NRENs looking at the current state of NRENs.

• Research and Education is at the Heart of the Creative Society

• The creative society needs secure, resilient and reliable infrastructure

• Highly professional providers of reliable & Resilient networks that are capable of supporting mission-critical services.

• The biggest difference between NRENs and commercial ISPs is that of the NREN is part of the R&E community, has an in-depth understanding of its users’ requirements and expectations, and is not motivated by profit.

• Several NRENs have been in business, in one form or another, for over twenty-five years. Because the state of the development of the NRENs differs widely, the list of recommendations will be applicable to individual NRENs in different ways.

Majors changes in NRENs (1)

• The primary focus of all NRENs is connecting universities and research institutes.

• GÉANT is the most advanced and well-connected research and education network in the world

- Connecting more than 100 countries around the world with high-speed links. - Flexibility: services and infrastructure can be tailored to individual user requirements. - Capacity: 100Gbps across the core network, design to support up to 8Tbps, to handle the BIG DATA - Effective and efficient operations: 99% of cases are reported within 15 minutes of any outage being

detected. - Services: a wide range of services including; IP and dedicated circuits, testbeds and virtualized

resources, authentication and roaming, monitoring and troubleshooting, advisory and support services.

• NRENs in the GÉANT region provide services to approximately 82% of all university-level students in the countries involved; that is, a total of 24 million students.

Majors changes in NRENs (2)

• Connected Campus/Communities reflects not only the opportunities that are now open to NRENs but also the challenges that are on the way.

• However, many NRENs go beyond the primary focus by also connecting institutes of further education, as well as libraries and museums.

• NRENs offer national backbones and international connectivity of exceptional quality & Reliability.

• Some NRENs have deployed lightpaths in their backbone, effectively increasing the capacity even further.

• Last but not least, NRENs have reported that users are experiencing no congestion at the backbone level.

How NRENs are perceived by theirs customers?

• The end users emphasize the role of the NREN as the hub for collaboration.

• Connectivity is identified as the most important service that the NREN offers.

• To remain successful, the NRENs need to focus on their collaboration activities and, provide innovative solution

• But NREN Clients are facing some challenges such as:

- Budget and resource constraints (grant reduction, recruitment embargo, value for money); - Mobility-related aspects ubiquitous access; - Cloud services - Which ones to offer? And to whom? - How to cater with demand for new services? - How to manage the data deluge? - Multimedia services (steaming, conferencing).

What services NRENs customers are requesting?

• First Secure, Reliable, Resilient and high available Connectivity.

• Second, increase security by providing PKI and AAI Services

• Follow By

- Cloud services including SDN/NFV; - Security services (certificates, MAN/WAN, firewalling). - Hosting of virtual machines; - Workshops on third-party systems and services; - Framework agreements (software), VoIP (SIP trunks), virtualization of desktops, Video Conferencing on

more devices (including web-based), mobile applications (shared development of mobile application); - 24/7 monitoring of critical LAN infrastructure;

Where NRENs want to go?

• To have constant interaction & collaboration with clients to Anticipate their needs

• To become Neutral and Trustful

• To React quickly to new developments

• Proactive by pilot possible new services with clients and users to make sure the NREN is pro-active with regard delivery of services;

• Early involvement of client on portfolio & services developments

• Act as an aggregator of Services

- Aggregation is a common feature of markets that bulk buying brings with it economies of scale, both for the supplier and the customer

- Some examples of aggregation include: RedIRIS spam suppression, JANET PSN collaboration savings, SURFdiensten software deals, HEANET 3G services, TERENA Certificate Service and the SWITCHpki

The National Research and Education Network of Hungary NIIFI/HUNGARNET

• NIIFI, the National Information Infrastructure Development Institute has been devoted to developing and operating the research network in Hungary since 1986, in close co-operation with HUNGARNET, the users' national association.

• The services of NIIFI cover the entire Hungarian academic, research, and public collection community (libraries, museums, archives), by providing almost 500 institutions – about 700,000 individuals – with:

- an integrated computer networking infrastructure - a wide communication and co-operation service portfolio - a reliable environment for e-Science applications, and - a data infrastructure framework for content preservation and provision.

• NIIFI’s multi-Gigabit hybrid network serves some 700 sites via 30 regional centres (backbone PoPs) by national as well as international (GÉANT) connectivity. The network supports AAI, PKI/CA, TCS, R&E Grid / Cloud / HPC / storage infrastructure, Videoconferencing, VoIP, and more

Reflections

• Regulators need to grant NRENs appropriate licenses that permit them it to peer or transit network traffic with neighboring NRENs. This is a prerequisite to full participation within the global NREN fraternity.

• Leaders of research and academic institutions need to figure out ways to better collaborate even if they compete for the same research grants and students.

• They face similar challenges when it comes to ICT integration within their core functions.

• How can they effectively work together to create more awareness about the potential role of ICT in education?

• Address the fear-of-change and mind-set issues that arise when people feel that their once-lifetime jobs are now threatened? Tackle the varying levels of ICT literacy both within their own and across institutions?

Conclusion

• Only a few NREN’s have a long term vision and/or strategic plan.

• NREN’s must take an active role and develop strategies to meet the challenges of 2020.

• NREN’s must assume a leadership role, reaching out to user communities, evangelizing the new possibilities, engaging users who have previously not used advanced networking, and anticipating and fielding new technologies and services in advance of user requirements.

• We believe that active leadership is crucial, and that NREN’s are well placed and well organized to fill this role, and to provide a comprehensive vision for networking and future infrastructures.

• NREN’s have a strong tradition for collaboration and have assumed leadership before.

• NREN’s must accept the responsibility to educate users in what is possible.

• NREN’s must step forward to assume the role of integrator for the diverse e-Infrastructures, for the many projects, and for the communities.

• To make the NREN an enabler of education and science to the user community the NREN has to focus on ICT architectures.

• Doing the above the outcome is, a world-class networking and network services provided to an ever-broader community in a user-centric manner will be possible by 2020.
