DESCRIPTION

We spend a lot of time talking about how technology-driven innovation is defining the future of business. But how does that manifest itself in the future of networks and the sharing economy? In order to paint that picture, we asked a series of thought leaders and experts for their predictions on how the sharing economy will impact the future of business. This presentation is a collection of their responses. For more, see the Future of Networks series: http://blogs.sap.com/innovation/tag/future-of-networks

It Will Create Entirely New Value Chains

Reuven Gorsht

It means we can remove the “chain” from “supply chain.” When your customers can be inserted into the process, entirely new value chains can be created and efficiencies can be realized.

It Will Benefit Both Companies and Their Customers

Rob Mihalko

Nearly real-time, error-free connectedness will increase companies’ competitive advantage through lower transaction and inventory costs. It will also enable them to react faster to customer demands and reinvest savings (and potentially increased sales) back into the growth of the business.

It Will Be Structured

The waters are getting muddied with people wanting to share sensitive data. I believe once we reach this point, the “sharing economy” will take stock and require structure and rules to pull back on what we share and with whom.

Accounts Payable Will Become Strategic

Christopher Rauen

A networked supply chain enables trading partners to collaborate in real time. And one emerging area of opportunity lies in accounts payable. Incorporating the accounts payable function into a networked supply chain transforms a largely tactical function into a strategic asset.

It Will Be Powerful

Chris Haydon

Vice President, Product Management, Ariba, an SAP CompanyVisit Chris’ blog

Think of the power of 1 or 2 million business participants on a single network. The process alignment, innovation, and insight that can be derived from such a community is something that no single organization can ever hope to achieve or collect themselves.

It Will Create a Social Supply Chain

Ramesh Ramakrishnan

Founder, RR Marketing Advisory@Ramesh_RamkiVisit Ramesh’s blog

Companies will rise and fall based on their ability to attract and retain key members in a network to contribute to their current and future value propositions. Quality and ethical issues will get exposed, business impact due to natural calamities and political instabilities will swiftly travel through the network, and ‘wisdom of crowds’ will kick in to fix it. It will become a social supply chain.

It Will Bring More Customization

Timo Elliott

History shows that as soon as you make the supply chain more efficient, people find new ways to make it more complex. The ability to do things in real time will, above all, result in more customization of products and services.

It Will Flex with Demand and Mitigate Risk Better

James Marland

Vice President, Ariba, an SAP Company@JamesMarlandVisit James’ blog

In supply chains, we will see the ability to flex with demand much more tightly. A truly networked supply chain is the only realistic way that this type of hypercustomization can be achieved. The other area where a networked supply chain is important is risk management – with the ability to reroute defective nodes. Also, by using a predictive system, a supply chain manager can start to see signs of trouble before the node goes down.

It Will Yield Insights and Savings

The implications are huge!  With real-time visibility into the entire source-to-settle process, key stakeholders can yield insights and savings that are enormous.

Customers Become Part of the Network

Joe Pine

The possibilities are great, especially if you extend the supply chain into a demand network that encompasses customers. This enables customers to take part in that network, where you have access to them and their individual wants and needs in real time. As a result, you can respond instantaneously to new demand by dynamically reconfiguring the network’s capabilities to meet it.

It Will Be Efficient

Jeremiah Owyang

Chief Catalyst and Founder, Crowd Companies@jowyangVisit Jeremiah’s blog

The opportunity is to increase

efficiency by sensing how

supply chains can be improved

through real-time alterations. To

do this, supply chains must

have sensors, capture the

signal, analyze the data in real

time, and facilitate an

actionable process to make

changes.
