STORY 1: WELCOME TO YVR 2037

YVR Airport: Thursday May 14, 2037 at 08:45

This is Pascal’s first visit to Vancouver International Airport. As he wanders inside, his augmented reality glasses alert him to watch the Welcome to YVR Airport story. He accepts, prompting a YVR Storyteller to appear.

The Storyteller – one of five hundred, personalized, holographic customer service representatives, helps travellers with way-finding, gate details and information on airport amenities. The Storyteller accompanies Pascal through the main concourse, detailing the history of YVR and describing the unique journey he is about to experience.

“Vancouver Airport Authority welcomes you to Vancouver International Airport, or YVR. Here we work as an active member of the community to build a sustainable, vibrant, innovative and diverse airport. We also aim to deliver hyper-efficiency with friendly, fast and reliable service for airlines that connect you to friends, family, business partners and associates in Asia, the Americas and beyond.”

As Pascal proceeds through the building he’s struck by its ambience, its forest-fresh air and the fusion of clean, modern 21st century architecture with stunning First Nations art – a visual reminder to travellers of the city’s origins and history.

The Storyteller continues – “We listen to your needs, and together with local transport operators, get you to your destination as efficiently as possible. This means reduced congestion, flexible transport choices and more time for you to enjoy your journey.

We are proud of the fact that revenue we earn is reinvested back into our airport, it plays a part in making us one of the best airports in the world.

In addition, we create value for Greater Vancouver and all British Columbians from the available land on beautiful Sea Island. We achieve this by offering automated stacked parking for longer stays, quick transportation connections to downtown Vancouver and other key regional destinations, a world-class retail park and the creation of the YVR Business District - home to the world’s best aeronautical startups. These businesses focus on the study, design and manufacturing of air flight-capable machines and supporting systems.

Upon entering the terminal building you will experience fast track bag check-in, you will pass through state-of-the-art security with ease, and beyond that – enjoy a cosmopolitan shopping and dining experience to rival any around the world.

YVR strives to be fully sustainable and environmentally efficient. We’re achieving this through the harnessing of rainwater and solar energy. Our revolutionary vertical farm delivers fresh vegetables daily, while our award-winning ground operations carefully manage the environment to reduce noise, taxiing times, queues and greenhouse gases. We strive for zero carbon emissions and zero waste each day of the year.

To ensure travellers have the best experience, we have deployed sensors to capture and transmit data to help with optimization, artificial intelligence and automated control systems.

We thank you for choosing to travel through YVR. We’d love to hear how we could make your airport experience even richer. In the meantime, have a great trip.”

STORY 2: LEISURE TRAVEL

YVR Airport: Thursday May 14, 2037 at 10:30

An autonomous electric vehicle with the Kakashi family onboard silently ascends the ramp leading up to the Departures level at Vancouver International Airport. Stopping in front of the Latin American airline entrance, the vehicle door slides open and two excited children bound out, followed closely by their mom – Deb.

Inside the vehicle, their dad – Yoshi, requests a receipt. A voice responds, “Thirty-five credits for this trip, and we have you booked for a return journey for 16:50 hrs. on May 30th.”

Yoshi exits the vehicle and joins the others, while the vehicle glides down to the Arrivals level where its next scheduled pick-up awaits.

The Kakashis enter a large open plan reception area adorned with First Nations art, framed by tall, glass ceilings.

Moments later, they place their bags on a conveyor belt. The bags activate an overhead screen, and a voice says –“Good morning Mr. Kakashi, your travel documents are in order and your plane is on-time. You’ll

be leaving from Gate E127. Please proceed through the Security Zone and ensure that you and your family keep your heads raised for biometrics scanning.”

The family enters the Security Zone – a short passageway, walled on both sides with floor-to-ceiling, backlit panels. As they walk through, one-by-one, the panels switch from white to green, followed by a friendly voice that prompts them to proceed.

Once through security, they are greeted by the centrepiece of YVR’s biodiversity and sustainability initiatives – a multi-story tubular structure made of glass. Inside this tower, workers nurture and cultivate fruit, vegetables and plants, adjust atmospheric controls and gather produce for the day.

A holographic YVR Storyteller is on hand to explain – “Welcome to our vertical farm. We use very little water in our hydroponic systems; the water we do use is collected from rainfall and the power we use is harnessed from the sun, via transparent solar panel windows that surround the Departures area. To supplement the vertical farm’s produce, we source fruit and vegetables from the finest growers here in the B.C.’s Lower Mainland.”

The aroma of deliciously cooked food greets them as they arrive in the airport’s Shopping and Dining area. Travellers saunter from store to store, business people congregate on moving walkways, and the international food court offers a scintillating selection of global cuisines. “My friend Akio told me that the vegetarian cafe here is amazing. Let’s go check it out!” says Deb.

While Yoshi and the kids find a place to sit Deb selects suggested menu items from a screen, based on the family’s personal travel profiles.

Moments later, a server robot arrives at the table with the food as ordered. “Enjoy!”, it cheerfully exclaims and scoots off to the next customer.

The kids tuck in and sample a little of everything. Deb and Yoshi exchange a warm glance. After eating, they make their way to their gate via the moving walkways and settle into their seats in the comfortable waiting area.

A boarding announcement is made and the family lines up to get on the plane. The airline staff greet them and check the family’s credentials. “Enjoy your trip Mr. and Mrs. Kakashi. Jonny. Zina. We’ve left a surprise for you on your seats.”

They walk through the door and down the corridor to the aerobridge, the kids’ beaming smiles wider than ever before as they continue on their voyage of discovery.

STORY 3: FAMILY REUNIONS

YVR Airport: Thursday May 14, 2037 at 13:26

Nearing the end of the flight from London, England, a supersonic jet descends through a thin layer of cloud on its final approach to Vancouver International Airport.

Its youngest passenger, 10-year-old Zach, is on his way to stay with his Grandpa. He gazes with amazement over this city of glass, perched on the edge of the Pacific, backdropped by endless layers of snow-capped mountains.

“Wow!” he gasps, “what are those mountains called over there?” Douglas, his Holographic YVR Travel Guardian points out – “That is the Coast Mountain Range, and see those two peaks? They’re known as The Lions.” Zach pulls a face, raises his hands, claw-like and lets out a “RAARRGH!” followed by a chuckle – “I hope Grandpa Bill takes me to see them.”

As the plane continues its descent, Zach learns about the people and the businesses that flourish at the airport and in the surrounding areas.

Douglas explains – “See those big buildings down there? They’re for cargo. Clothing, food, and anything else you can think of moves through there. The Airport is a world leader in cargo logistics and uses state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and automated systems to help connect B.C. businesses to the rest of the world. For example, it’s quite likely that the B.C. salmon you eat back home in London was imported from here.”

As the aircraft prepares to land, Douglas points out the window – “See the vehicle parking?” When people park at Vancouver International Airport their vehicles get stored in the automatic car ports. They drive on, synchronize their flight details and the system packs them tightly into the space. That area can efficiently store over ten thousand cars.”

“This is the coolest airport,” Zach says excitedly as the plane quietly, gently touches down. Seconds later, a Ground Taxi Robot pulls it towards the gate to dock.

Zach grabs his bags and walks off the plane, up the aerobridge and into the main Arrivals area.

Strolling through the airport, Zach learns more about YVR through fun animations popping up on various airport surfaces. He and Douglas stop at a large window overlooking the runway.

“YVR has built hyper-efficient runways to reduce emissions and to support the adoption of biofuels, which makes flying more environmentally friendly.” As Zach peers out, information menus appear on the window tagging vehicles, planes and baggage loaders to coincide with what they’re seeing on the runway.

“Let’s go and see Grandpa Bill,” says Douglas accompanying Zach towards Passport Control.

A Canadian Border Services Officer approaches with a welcoming smile and scans Zach’s passport. “Welcome to Canada Zach!” Zach smiles.

As they approach the baggage area Utility Robots are helping travellers by hauling luggage and placing it on auto-carts that accompany the travellers as they exit towards ground transportation.

An auto-cart approaches – “Two bags for Zachary Swanson.” Zach and Douglas make their way towards the exit with the luggage-filled auto-cart gliding next to them.

Suddenly, from a short distance away, we hear – “Hey buddy!” Zach spots Grandpa Bill and runs into his outstretched arms. Douglas catches up with them – “Hello Bill. Great to see you. I have to go now. See you soon Zach.”

Zach responds with a smile and a wave – “Thanks for helping me, Douglas.”

The hologram of Douglas flickers and dissolves leaving a small control box on the floor. Bill picks it up, takes Zach’s hand and together they exit – “We can activate Douglas for the journey home and you can learn even more about the airport. Let’s go, I’ve got lots of fun planned for you!”

STORY 4: BUSINESS TRAVEL

YVR Airport: Thursday May 14, 2037 at 09:15

Businesswoman Jenny Chang steps off her flight from Shanghai and makes her way through the Arrivals area at Vancouver International Airport.

“Vision on!” she says, as her augmented reality contact lenses activate, and three alerts instantly appear in her field of vision. She glances at them, blinking twice to accept each one:

‘Downloading YVR Airport map’

‘Downloading YVR Business District events, for the month of May 2037’

‘YVR Business District: Meet Derek Gagnon at your gate’

A YVR Business Ambassador approaches and greets her – “Welcome to Vancouver International Airport Ms. Chang. My name is Derek and I am here to escort you through the terminal to the YVR Business District. I hope you had a pleasant flight?”

“I did,” she acknowledges with a nod and a smile.

“OK, let’s get you to your office in the YVR Business District. Due to the fact that you applied for your visa last month and have been pre-approved – you’ll be fast tracked through Immigration.”

Jenny’s passage through Immigration is swift and smooth.

A small flashing image of Jenny’s daughter, Mei, appears before her eyes. “Hi honey! how was school?” As Jenny and Derek proceed, Mei updates her Mom on her day.

When the call is complete, Derek describes how the YVR Business District came to be – “Over the past several years, the YVR Business District has emerged in two parts. First, we have the world-renowned YVR Innovation Hub – dedicated to early stage aeronautical startups from across Canada. We are honoured to have your Augmented Reality Avionics business join the program as an international partner.”

As they step off of the walkway, Derek continues – “Secondly, we house more established Canadian companies that are in the aviation industry and foreign companies that are looking to establish a presence here in North America. The Business District’s proximity to YVR means that companies based here are ideally placed to access every global market.”

Jenny and Derek stroll into a networking event, where they notice an exquisite raven sculpture perched over the door – the adopted symbol of the YVR Business District. In the room adorned with First Nations art, Jenny is captivated by the energy and the buzz of opportunities, possibilities and synergies as entrepreneurs meet and greet.

Jenny looks up and spots an electronic notice board displaying her name alongside others arriving this week, and then notices glass offices with teams working on computers, white boarding, and engaging in animated discussions. There are a number of people having virtual holographic meetings with colleagues from across the world, while others tap away on virtual laptops.

She smiles, knowing that she is certainly in the right place to launch her business in Canada.

STORY 5: PERSONAL TRAVEL

YVR Airport: Thursday May 14, 2037 at 09:15

A YVR Travel Assistant Robot waits at the entrance of the gate. The flight from Delhi landed a few minutes earlier and a successful Indian businessman enters the terminal, stops and checks his headset to see where his transfer will be.

He looks up and spots the Travel Assistant displaying his name and final destination. “Hello, I’m Aarav Sandhu, are you here to take me through to U.S. Departures?”

“Yes sir,” replies the Assistant, “please follow me.”

Aarav follows the Assistant down a hallway. The Assistant stops and turns its screen towards Aarav and a panel slides open revealing a glass scanner.

“Please place your passport on my scanner and look into my screen. We need to scan your details and biometrics before we proceed down the fast track route into U.S. Departures.”

Aarav places his passport on the panel and looks into the screen.

“Personal Information confirmed and visa cleared. This way please, Mr. Sandhu.”

As they proceed down a corridor Aarav spots his connecting plane through the window. On the window – a short, narrated movie starts up, describing the experience he will encounter in New Mexico. He can also see take-off, flight path and altitudinal data, as well as video of other travellers experiencing zero gravity for the first time – this makes him smile.

Moments later they arrive at the U.S. Departures entrance. A green light flashes as a camera captures Aarav’s biometrics. A voice validates that all checks have been completed and instructs him to proceed through an open door – “Please continue through into U.S. Departures.”

Aarav steps forward leaving the YVR Traveller Assistant behind and enters the U.S. Departures area. Suddenly a voice calls out – “Aarav! Aarav!”

A British woman, Melanie, approaches and they embrace. “It’s you!” says Aarav – “It’s so good to finally meet you.”

“Yes!” replies Melanie beaming – “How cool is this airport?! I need to show you something.”

She grabs his hand and takes him to a screen displaying the facilities in the area. “Look, they have a guest yoga instructor hosting a one-hour practice. We’re always chatting about doing yoga to relax ourselves before the trip – let’s try it out”.

Over the next hour they enjoy a powerful, reflective Asana practice. Afterwards, they head towards the vegetarian café for some food and to talk about the trip.

Post meal they arrive at their gate – a substantial, open area adorned with pictures of space travel. The zero-gravity video that Aarav saw earlier plays on the window next to the entrance of the ‘Space Gateway’ area.

“Good afternoon Mr. Sandhu, Miss Watson, I hope your flight connection went well. Welcome to your interstellar adventure. Come right on in. We fly in t-minus thirty minutes.”

Both Aarav and Melanie exchange a smile and proceed into the Space Age departures lounge.

Melanie can’t contain herself – “We’re nearly there. I am beyond excited.”

Aarav smiles to himself – “Me too Melanie. I finally get to be an astronaut.”
