EDUCATION NOTES ELLEN SIMON

We were treated to a very colorful lecture last month with Juanita Yeager. There were lots of “oohs” and “aahs” over her beautiful, large-scale

painted flowers. Juanita also shared with us her techniques for keeping her heavily quilted creations flat. Thanks to Carol and Marlene for being the quilt holders. Marlene earned a free class by graciously housing Juanita during her stay.

May brings Amy Winsor Stewart, the

“precision impaired quilter”, from North Carolina. You can get a preview of her work at winsorartquilts.com. Her quilts are fun, quirky and spontaneous, and I think her classes will be just as entertaining. Amy is bringing two suitcases of sample quilts, but you will only get to see them if you are in a class. Monday’s class is simple fusible applique, creating whimsical, embellished houses. No sewing machine required. Tuesday’s class will cover a wide

Amy has provided a kit for this class ($8) so all you have to do is show up with your machine and basic tools. Spaces are available in both classes so get those registration forms in to Pam Zeck and don’t miss out.

It’s not too early to sign up for the July UFO

retreat at DaySpring. I showed pictures from the first ever winter retreat and we were all impressed by how much work the ladies got done.

I hope you have been looking around your

studios and sewing rooms, thinking about what you want to share with the Guild during July’s virtual studio tour. I know you all have some clever storage solutions. I have seen quilter’s stashes in bathtubs and dishwashers. Who can top that?

See you in May.

Quilt Show Block Auction - 2013 Cathy Lane

The Friendship Knot Quilters Guild 2013 Quilt Show will once again have a Quilt Block Auction. The Quilt Block Auction is a great way for the Guild to raise money for upcoming education programs, raising as much as $2,000 in previous shows. In order to make the 2013 Auction successful, we need the support of all FKQG members, including cottage groups, other groups of friends, as well as individuals to make and donate sets of blocks. The sets will be displayed at the Show and sold as a Silent Auction. Get your group together, select a pattern, buy some fabrics (sharing the cost is good!) and make a set of blocks for the Auction. Remember: Make blocks only, not a quilt Make 9, 12, 16, 20 blocks, whatever is enough for a normal quilt layout Piece or applique accurately Include leftover fabric if available Provide a copy of the pattern, layout ideas, or directions Donate antique blocks if in good condition The deadline for turning in the blocks is January, 2013 Guild Meeting Quilt Show 2013 is almost a year away so there is plenty of time to take part in this worthwhile pro-ject. Only 16 sets were turned in last year, down from 22 in 2009. We are setting a goal of a least 20 sets for 2013. We are counting on your support for this worthwhile project.

2013 QUILT SHOW NEWS “QUILTS IN PARADISE”

MARLENE KURTZ

Setup - Thursday, March 7, 2013 Show - Friday, March 8th and Saturday, March 9th. The Boutique table at the Guild meetings is filled with great project ideas and enthusiastic crafty ladies who turn even ugly fabric into artis-tic handmade items. So think twice before you judge that fabric, it just might become part of the “must have” item in our next Quilt Show Bou-tique. Can’t think of what to make, just ask them for ideas. The Quilt Show Challenge fabric was availa-ble at the March and April Guild meetings. The big reveal will be at the show. Guidelines were printed in April’s newsletter. Both of the silent auctions, Small Quilts and Block, are accepting donations at the Guild meetings. Please see the articles in our newslet-ters for additional information or stop by the Quilt Show table at our Guild meetings if you have questions about either of these auctions. More information will be available on our show website as it is updated for 2013. Remember both auctions have minimum bid requirements and if an item receives no bid, it is returned to the donor/maker after the show. Mary Lewis received the last appliqued bor-der for our Donor Quilt. It is probably being quilted as I write and who knows we might have a very special Show N’ Tell next month. Elva Farrell volunteered to get the ball rolling for Donor Quilt Tickets distribution. She will be looking for volunteers to assist her. Dawn Moore will be handling publicity for our Show. I am sure she will have a few hints to help us publicize our Show to our friends and family and even on Facebook. There are still a few areas that remain vacant.

Not sure why, but I can assure you if you volun-teer for any of these areas you will have wonder-ful time with a great bunch of talented Guild members. The areas that have openings for a chair/coordinator: Program Ads Quilt Signage Show Signs Take-down Ribbons If you would like a bit more information about our Show or would like to volunteer for any of these openings, please stop by the Quilt Show in-fo table at the Guild Meeting or call me, Marlene K u r t z , 9 4 1 - 3 7 1 - 4 5 9 6 o r e m a i l [email protected].

Charity Projects for Pets Cass Bowen

For the past several months, Carol Brown has been collecting fabric scraps for a friend that is making dog beds for the animal shelters. Most of you know I am an obsessive cat lover - I have 3 of the little darlings (one not so little - 24 lbs.). I had a thread-bare king-size quilt that I hated to throw away so I decided to make some cat beds. I called the Humane Society for the preferred sizes. They told me they could use 2 sizes 12” x 24” or 16” x 24”. I went to Habitat Re-Use Store and bought pillowcases for 50 cents. I used them for the outside cover and put 3 layers of my old quilt inside. I made 5 of them in no time at all and actually got about 9 or 10 finished cat beds out of that old quilt. I felt good when I dropped them off and the volunteer was thrilled to receive them. So if you have a little time and an old quilt or some leftover batting, maybe you can make a dog or kitty a little happier.

Library News Trish Bobeck

Please don’t keep li-brary books to peruse during the meeting with-out checking them out. I like to close the Li-brary and put the books away at 7 p.m. when the meeting begins. This allows me and my helpers to enjoy the speaker. At the April meeting someone left an un-checked out book on the back table at the end of the meeting. If I had not seen this it would have most likely gone miss-ing. We all want to enjoy and maintain our val-uable Library books. Thank you for your help. New Library Additions: Skinny Quilts - Kim Schaefer - great ideas for bed runners, ta-ble toppers and wall hangings. 60 Pieced Quilt Borders - Judy Laquidara - spice up your quilts with mix/match pieced bor-ders. Quilting your Memories - Sandy Bonsib - in-spirations for designing with image transfers.

Unique Boutique News Quilt Show 2013

Cass Bowen

First off, thanks to all the members who have donated handmade items so far to the Boutique. We appreciate your time and creativity and wel-come all your donations. We have received a few items that we feel might be better suited to sell at Guild Meetings (magazine/book table) and the money donated to the Library Fund. If you have items such as sewing notions, equipment or any-thing other than handmade items, please drop them off at the Library magazine/book table. They will be happy to take them off your hands. This month we received a box full of silk tie fabric (someone took the time to take the ties apart and press the fabric). How creative can you be? Let’s think of a way that we could utilize that fabric. Janine Ward, our Boutique buddy, says we still need donations of kid/juvenile fabric for “kid” items. She has been quite creative in using up the scraps she’s received for beautiful original projects. We will be getting together soon to plan some workshops. Pinky Stewart gave me a hint for displaying throw pillow cases. Stuff them with bubble wrap or those air pocket sheets used for packing. It dis-plays the pillow beautifully and customers can see them in their full glory.
