The chemical industry in France

CA 86,7 billions of euros with 160 000 employees

The chemical industry association UIC (Union des Industries Chimiques) is a non-governmental organization defending the interests of 1400 members in France

UIC has been organised trough out France with 15 regions involved in

its network and in Paris around five main skills dealing with

• technics affairs

• economics and trade affairs

• social issues

• communication

• innovation

The UIC is also an active member of the European Chemical Industry

Council (CEFIC) which defends the interests of around 29 000

companies in Europe, representing 21 % of the world chemical

production

The French

chemical

industry:

7th largest

producer in

the World

and 2nd

largest in

Europe

Bio-economy, « a megatrend » in US as well as in Europe

Page 6: The French chemical industry - BioBased Economy

ACDV estimates that the share of the biobased chemicals should increase at

the worldwide level in the next ten years (2025) and should be around :

20 % for polymers with 16 % for specialty polymers and 4% for the

basic polymers ; (38 Mt carbon per year)

5 to 6 % for intermediates commodities except polymers(6,6 Mt de

carbone par an)

20% for basic organic for specialties and fine chemicals (20Mt of carbon

per year)

Biobased market opportunities

Page 7: The French chemical industry - BioBased Economy

7

Different types of technological platforms to develop new

technologies on biobased chemistry

Public private partnership

1/ clusters of competitiveness : a key role to set up research and

developement projects with their members (academic and

industrials SMES)

2/ Demonstration plateforme and sharing facilities

3/ New tools : IEED with a key role to implement knowledge for

industrial partners

Private : Biorefineries

THE LESTREM SITE

The most important biorefinery in Europe

This plants spans 150 hectares. It converts

7 000 tons of grains each day and markets

more than 700 products. The Group’s main

Research Innovation Development center

is also based in Lestrem.

To respond to changes in the market. More

than 50 million euros per year are devoted

to research, innovation and development

and more than 300 researchers are

working in laboratories and pilot units.

COMPIÈGNE an oilseed processing

Near Compiègne, this oilseed biorefinery

brings together the group’s subsidiaries

specialised in oilseed crushing (Saipol),

biodiesel and glycerin production (Diester

Industrie) and oleochemical R&D and

production (Novance and Oleon).

A project is also underway for the development of a second

generation biodiesel demonstration unit within the BioTfueL

program.
