PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back Welcome to another busy Term 3 which includes an enormous number of events ranging from the HSC Trial examinations (about to commence in week 3), performance evenings for HSC Drama and Music, our annual Showcase, our annual Business Breakfast and this year, our 50th anniversary Open Day celebration and evening dinner commemorating a half - century milestone for the Castle Hill community. We have hit the deck running!

Canteen refurbishment I’m delighted to announce that the refurbishment of the leisure area in front of the canteen is all but finished, thanks to the expert planning and fund raising of the P and C. Of particular note are the geometric murals on the two side brick walls and the “pic perf” (pictorial perforations) banner across the top of the canteen with a 50th anniversary emblem in the middle. It’s all looking terrific.

HSC Trial Examinations Year 12 students will finalise their last major assessments through the HSC trials which commence on Monday July 29. I know that students have been working hard to refine study strategies that suit them. Without question, all strategies should include periods of rest and recovery – a reward if you like – after hours of intense reading, writing and reflection. I urge students and parents to ensure that built in to any study program is some exercise or short social activity that “takes you away”, clears the mind and distracts for a short period of time. Drinking water and eating healthy, delicious food is also a must in preparation for maximum concentration, problem solving and the ability to think quickly and clearly. We wish students the best for the coming fortnight. No doubt, it is a trying and challenging time but it is one that can be managed well with planning and discipline.

School Development Day for teachers Teacher professional learning is a critical part of what we do on a regular, planned and strategic basis. Teachers, rightly, expect professional learning to be of high quality with appropriate time allocated so that they can work in teams and meaningfully share good, practical ideas .Our school development days are one of the means to provide time to teachers to learn together. On Monday July 15, we invited Ruth Philips to work with us on an area that is important: differentiating teaching programs for all learners. Given that the national curriculum will be a reality for many faculties next year, and shortly thereafter all faculties, we invited Ruth to assist teachers in developing differentiation strategies to embed in new programs for the national curriculum. We want teaching programs that extend those who are highly able and assist students who are less so. Differentiating tasks, or processes or content, is a challenging area for teachers because all students must feel that their needs are met, that they are productively learning and that it’s not a “one size fits all” approach. Ruth is an expert teacher and a wonderful mentor for teachers to learn from. It was a most productive day. Band 6 – what does it look like? Last term teachers spent considerable time in their professional learning sessions on Thursday morning analysing HSC exemplar responses – or Band 6 responses – in order to deconstruct and explain to current Year 12 students the subtle nuances of higher order essays and other kinds of HSC responses. We want students not only to have samples of the best responses but a detailed deconstruction of practical ideas on how to” move from a band 5 to a band 6”. An enormous amount of collegial work went into this project. I’m pleased to say that a booklet of scaffolds for every HSC course will be distributed to Year 12 students. I’m sure it will be another effective tool to assist students in their learning. Enrolments We continue to grow and I continue to enrol. This week, for example, seven students started. Next year we expect to be close to 1400, although I am trying hard to avoid this. Bigger is not necessarily better. But so many people want to come here. It’s such a privilege to be part of the enthusiasm for this great school. Telstra issue I have written about this issue in previous Drawbridge publications. You would know that the school, its students, teachers and parents are opposed to the Telstra tower to be constructed on the roof of Castle Hill RSL. Telstra have noted our opposition and are convening a community meeting to “explain things” and “note our concerns”. I have suggested that we want more than our concerns “noted”. The community meeting will be held in the Scout Hall opposite the school, corner of Castle St and Rowallan Avenue, on Thursday August 1. Two sessions will be held: 3.30pm – 5.30pm and 6.00pm – 8.00pm. Unfortunately I am organising a state conference at a meeting on that afternoon and so will be unable to attend this meeting, to my regret. But I know the community will be there in substantial numbers.

A new sign I’m sure you’ve noticed our new addition – a flashy, flashing sign. I think it assists in communication with you, serving as a way of reminding everyone of key events.

A new structure You may recall some time ago that a restructure was announced for the bureaucracy of the DEC. This new structure started at the beginning of this term. We are now part of a network known as the Dural network and includes all of the schools in the previous structure and some others. Ms Janet Wasson, the school education director of the previous network has moved to Hornsby and will be a very real loss. Janet was a great support for this school and public education generally. We welcome Mr Tim McCallum who is the director of Dural network. I know that Tim will be a wonderful advocate for our schools and lend a great deal of expertise to our work.

CAREERS NEWS An Apprenticeship and Traineeship EXPO will be held at the Hornsby War Memorial Hall at 2 High Street on Wednesday 31 July from 4pm – 7pm. If you - or anyone you know is interested in undertaking an apprenticeship and/or traineeship next year, or in the near future, this free event will give all interested parties the opportunity to meet with representatives of training organisations and employers. Come along and pick up some practical job application and interview tips while perhaps finding a career that may suit you very well! You are advised to bring along several copies of your resume and pen and paper. Several local Careers Advisers will be there, and, of course, parents are most welcome to come along. I hope to see some of our students and parents there – and if you would like more information, please see the flyer in this Newsletter for further details or please contact me. The whole school community is always welcome to attend any of the Careers ‘Lunchtime INFO sessions’ that are advertised in the school ‘Daysheet’ – and the Careers Newsletters which are sent out to all our students from Year 9 onwards – and their parents. So far, we have had Defence Force Recruiting and Macleay College visit this term. Bedford College is opening their new campus for 2014 in the Norwest area and a representative will be coming out - as will UWS College and Notre Dame University representatives – all are scheduled to visit in the next few weeks. Wishing Year 12 students every success in their upcoming HSC Trial Exams! After this exam period, there will be frequent ‘UAC INFORMATION Sessions’ run at various times throughout the coming weeks. They will be held before school, at lunchtimes and after school. It is very understandable that many students find the process of applying for University a little daunting – and it is something that they have never done before! While the on-line process is supposed to be very user-friendly, I hope that these sessions will prove to be helpful - and remove at least a little of that stress! There will be reminders of the days/times in the Daysheet in these coming weeks – and there will still be ‘Lunchtime Info sessions’ as have already been arranged. UAC applications open on Wednesday 7 August (during the HSC Trial Exam period) and on-time applications close on the last Friday in September. ALL Year 12 students are encouraged to take a UAC 2014 Guide as soon as these booklets are made available to them through the school as they provide a great deal of useful information - regardless of immediate career plans or expectations! There are more exciting opportunities for students to attend a couple of ‘Industry Bites’ visits this term, including to our local police station - and to the head office of McDonalds; and, hopefully, at least to two other venues during Term 4. Our visits to Castle Hill Holden and Microsoft were memorable and insightful and proved beyond doubt that diverse groups of people with such different talents and backgrounds may be working within any type of organisation! I must once again thank the great work and commitment of colleagues at 2realise – particularly Gayna Bamforth for making these unique “excursions” possible! Unfortunately numbers of attendees are limited, and I only wish more students could partake in these outings! Jane Curran Careers Adviser

Sports Council Term THREE 2013

Sports Council have organised the following activities and competition over Term Three. 1. Footy Colours Day – This will be held during Spirit Week with a Footy Colours Mufti Day on Wednesday 21 August. The Sports Council is aiming to raise funds to help support young people fighting cancer through mufti day donations, cake stall and sport based guessing competitions for sport related prizes.

2. Senior Futsal/Indoor Soccer Competition – Years 10 to 12 students competing at lunchtime in the gym. There will be prizes for the winning team.

3. Jill Norris Netball – To honour a former PD/H/PE teacher who unfortunately passed away in 2009 due to cancer. Sports Council will organise Junior and Senior competitions at lunchtimes on the Quad.

4. Year Seven House Competition – Different sporting competitions between Year Seven House groups. House points from these competitions go towards the 2013 Champion Sports House Trophy.

Sports Council is organising its annual sports excursion during Term Four to Jamberoo Adventure Park. For students to go on this excursion they need to complete a Sport participation card for the different sporting activities that they have been involved in during the year. The Sport participation cards can be obtained from the PD/H/PE Department or from your PC Teacher. The completed cards need to be returned to the PD/H/PE Staffroom.

Sports Council Sports Spotlight

Daniel Gale Daniel recently competed at the NSW All Schools Golf selection trials at Wagga Wagga. Daniel was selected as captain of the NSW All Schools team.

What made you decide to take up Golf as a sport?

My parents got me into golf by just having a few social rounds around Fox Hills and then they joined me in the junior program that the club had and it started from there.

What level of representation have you achieved in Golf?

I have played golf at a national level. I have played in many Australian Junior Championships and came 13th at the most recent one in April. What training do you do for Golf?

I train every day for golf. It may include swing practice, putting/chipping or course practice. At night I do a strength and conditioning program specific for golf.

What other sports do you play?

I used to play baseball and AFL. I had to give up both of them because I didn’t have time for golf.

What do you want to achieve in the future in regards to your Golf?

I want to make the national squad within the next five years and hopefully play on the PGA tour one day. Thank you for the interview

Sport Report

Open Girls Tennis

Congratulations to the Open Girls Tennis who are the 2013 Sydney West Champions. The team comprises Ariya Bhatt, Stephanie Conyngham, Shailja Dhar and Jessie Newman. The campaign started in Rounds 2 and 3 with wins over last year’s Sydney west finalists Baulkham Hills High and James Ruse Agricultural High. These wins qualified the team for the area finals where the top four played off to determine the Sydney West champion. The area semi-final was played against Cumberland High School, where the result was an extremely convincing victory to Castle Hill, with the team losing only four games during the six sets played. The final was played against last year’s winners, St Marys Senior High school. The general consensus at the courts was that a St Marys win was on the cards; however, they had not come up against the Castle Hill juggernaut. Against girls who were much older, experienced (and not to mention bigger), the Castle Hill girls deservedly won a tight final to be crowned Sydney West Champions. The girls now head to Ulladulla in Week 2 of Term 3 to compete in the NSW CHS finals where the top eight teams in the state will play over two days to determine the NSW CHS winner. Results will be posted next issue. The girls are wished the best of luck and I’m sure they will do us proud.

Mr Tudman. Head Teacher PD/H/PE
