PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Year 12 Performances and displays - in preparation for HSC assessment It’s that time of year again when Year 12 students in Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance, Industrial Technology Wood, Industrial Technology Metal, English Extension 2 and Design and Technology must prepare major works for their HSC. All works are due very shortly. And of course, with the Trial HSC exams in full flight, the pressure mounts for these students. In preparation for the assessment of performance- based subjects, evenings are held for students to practise their craft in front of an audience of well wishers and some guest assessors from other schools. It’s an important part of our calendar and a necessary practice for the actual HSC exam. The major works are certainly looking strong, as always. Parents can see these displays throughout the term at the Art Show on August 31, the HSC Music Evening on September 2, the TAS seminar evening on September 8 and the Showcase on August 25. Jeans4Genes Day As part of our extra curricula program at this school to care for others, give to others and think about issues not necessarily encountered at the school level, students raised money for genetic research on Friday August 6. We continue to value a social justice program that broadens the minds of students. Federal election With a federal election just days away, education issues will be uppermost in your minds. Political vision is critical in the management of preschool, school and post school education so I am currently asking myself the following questions in order to help me make decisions:

What is the education vision of each party? What do they want for young people at school, for their future?

Is there an appropriate amount of investment - money - in each party’s education policy in order to realise the vision?

What is each party doing about redressing inequities in education? Should the richest schools get as much as they do from governments? If they didn’t, what would be the effect on us?

What is each party’s policy on improving standards and learning for teachers? What practical, motivational and realistic policies do they have on this?

What advice has each political party sought from teachers and principals on education policy? If they haven’t had significant dialogue with such key stakeholders, why not?

Could each party explain how the National Curriculum will not dumb down the NSW curriculum?

Which parties will continue with the laptop rollout for Year 9 students? If the laptop program is discontinued, what will politicians say to young people about their future and this country’s future?

Do politicians from any party – in particular, those who are education ministers or shadow education ministers - understand the following and can explain them simply (not simplistically): ICSEA, the difference between NSW HSC and the International Baccalaureate, the real role of NAPLAN tests, the substantial and increasing mental health issues in young people (autism, depression, anxiety) and the impact this has on families, other students in the classroom and teachers?

There are so many questions to ask. But there needs to be this scrutiny. Good luck in finding answers that are not just satisfactory, but inspiring and optimistic for public education generally, and young people whose futures are reliant on the wisdom, vision, passion and knowledge of adults who aspire to political office. Congratulations Congratulation to Freya Wadlow, who competed in The McDonalds Eisteddfod recently and achieved third place in the 15 year Woodwind Section. This was out of a field of thirty talented musicians. In the 16 year Flute Section, she received a Highly Commended. Well done, Freya! Trivia Night

Once again the Parents and Citizens Association is working like Trojans to support the learning of students at Castle Hill High. As part of this support, they are organising a fun filled evening and trivia night on Saturday 4 September at 7.30pm in the School Auditorium.

It would be great to see as many people there as possible. Form your own table of eight or come as individuals.

Tickets can be purchased from Mr Kerrigan in the PE Staffroom. Vicki Brewer Principal

It has been an action-packed beginning to Term Three for the Creative and Performing Arts. We began with a Band Day on the first day back: under the direction of one of our Band Conductors, Paul Derricott, and a group of specialist tutors, Band Members honed their skills in their respective instruments. The day culminated in a thoroughly entertaining concert for parents and friends. It was lovely to have ex-student James Unsworth back as the woodwind tutor for the day. Band students also accompanied David Evans, myself and Ms Jones to the Sydney Symphony that week for Beethoven 5, Fate Knocks. It was a wonderful experience for all and we’re looking forward to the next opportunity for an outing of this kind.

Congratulations also to Elisse-Marie Kinley and Sarah Womersley, who performed at Port Macquarie during the holidays as part of the Northern Sydney Regional Choir.

Year Twelve Drama students presented their HSC Group and Individual Projects for an audience and external Trial HSC examiners on 28 July. The evening was a culmination of their hard work in preparation for their practical HSC examination which is scheduled for 25 August. We wish them every success in their final weeks of preparation.

This week Music students accompanied Mrs Danckert and Ms Drewitt Smith went to see the musical West Side Story. It was an enjoyable day for all involved. Musical Theatre is a component of the Stage 5 Music Teaching and Learning Program, so this

excursion provided valuable insights for these students.

Looking ahead, there are some exciting events coming up for the Creative and Performing Arts. The variety of talent at Castle Hill High School is truly impressive and we are delighted to have these opportunities to showcase it to the wider community.

In conjunction with the 2011 The Hills Shire Australia Day Celebrations, the Australia Day Committee will again be conducting the annual Public Speaking Competition title “Oz Speak”. This event has the two-fold effect of encouraging excellence in public speaking among our young people and promoting Australia Day in the Shire. There will be two categories: Junior – Years 7, 8 and 9 students and Senior – Years 10, 11 and 12 students. The heats which will take place late Term 3 and early Term 4, will be held in the Council Chambers, with the finals held on Monday 24 January 2011 at The Council Chambers. Students are given the option of preparing a topic, with an Australian theme, that follows their own studies/interests OR choosing from the following topics: - Power Is Corrupting, Honesty In Sport, Bullying, The Effect Of Social Media On Our Society, Integrity – A Lost Art, How Do You Perceive Australia’s Role In Our Region? The Glass Ceiling. Is It Still In Place?, Are Students Being Effectively Prepared For Life Outside School?, When Should We Consider Ourselves To Be An Adult?, Asylum Seekers, Corporate Environmental Responsibility In Australia. All students will be asked to speak for five minutes. Representatives from Toastmasters will be judging this competition according to the rules of Toastmasters and their decision in final and no correspondence will be entered into. The following prizes will be awarded in each of the categories: First Prize - $250, Second Prize $200, Third Prize $150. Please see Mrs Clifford in the English Staffroom for an entry form. Entries close Friday 3 September 2010.
