Secretary of StateVeteran Services

Veteran DesignationA “VETERAN” designation may be placed on theface of an Illinois driver’s license or ID card at therequest of the card applicant with proper docu-mentation. The applicant must have received anhonorable discharge from any branch of the U.S.military, served as a reservist or member of theNational Guard, or retired from the U.S. Military.For more information, visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com or call the Illinois Depart ment of Veterans’Affairs at 800-437-9824.

Registration Renewal WaiverMembers of the U.S. Armed Forces, serving inactive duty or as a reservist, who can show proof ofservice in a combat mission shall have their stan-dard vehicle registration fee waived for the renewalperiod immediately following their return to theUnited States. Proof must be shown at the time ofregistration renewal.

Free Duplicate Driver’s License and ID CardMembers of the military who are currently on activeduty may obtain a duplicate driver’s license, instruc-tion permit or ID card at no charge. This benefit isextended to the spouse or children living in thehome while the family member is on active duty.

Military License Plates for Spouses ofDeceased Military MembersThe spouse of a deceased veteran may retain theveteran’s military license plates by transferring thevehicle registration within 180 days following theveteran’s death.

Military Plates Transfer Fee WaiverVeterans can transfer their license plate to a militarylicense plate free of charge. Fees apply for vanityand personalized military plates.

Disabled Veteran License Plates Any veteran who holds proof of a 50 percent orgreater service-connected disability from the U.S.Department of Veterans Affairs may apply for anymilitary series license plate one time free of charge.Additional fees may apply for vanity and personal-ized military plates.

Illinois Veterans’ History ProjectThe Illinois Veterans’ History Project, launched bySecretary of State Jesse White, creates a perma-nent record of the names and stories of Illinois veterans and civilians who served our state andcountry during war, so that their contributions willnot be forgotten.

I am pleased to offer a varietyof services and programs toour military veterans who havegiven so much of themselvesfor the greater good of thisnation. The Illinois Secretary ofState’s office provides servicesfor those who have served orare retired from military serv-ice.

Having served in the U.S. Armed Forces as a para-trooper in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Divisionand later as a member of the Illinois National Guardand Reserve, I understand there is no greater markof respect than serving your country.
