Robert Shuler Roderick Robert was awarded the Bronze Star and posthumous Purple Heart for fatal wounds Jan 14, 1944 at Monte Vischiataro, Italy. He was a member of the First Special Service Force, knows as the "Devil's Brigade" and made famous in a movie with William Holden. In October of 1943, the commander of the U.S. Fifth Army, Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark, brought the 1st Special Service Force to Italy. The Devil's Brigade arrived in Casablanca in French Algeria in November 1943 and moved to the Italian front arriving at Naples on November 19, 1943, immediately sent into combat with the U.S. 36th Infantry Division. At Monte la Difensa, the Devil's Brigade earned a reputation for being able to take impenetrable objectives when no one else could. Here, in the dead of winter, the 1st Special Service Force wiped out a strategic enemy defensive position that sat high atop a mountain surrounded by steep cliffs. Previously, American and British forces had suffered many casualties in futile attempts to take the important target. The 1st SSF was successful, and this incident was the basis for the 1968 motion picture titled "The Devil's Brigade." The 1st SSF immediately continued its attack, assaulting Monte la Remetanea from December 6 to December 9. It captured Monte Sambúcaro on December 25, and assaulted Monte Vischiataro on January 8, 1944. During the mountain campaign the 1st SSF suffered 77% casualties. Robert Shuler Roderick was one of them, suffering fatal wounds on Monte Vischiataro.

Vernon Ralph Brook

Vernon Ralph Brook died August 27, 2008 at San Angelo, Texas at the age of 81. He was born May 28, 1927, at Snyder, Texas. During World War II he served in the Navy as a hospital corpsman aboard the battleship USS Iowa, and in 1946 was part of the Japanese occupation forces. He married Alta Louise Doughty in 1947, his loving wife for 59 years, until her death in 2006. Vernon graduated from Texas Christian University in 1955 and became a teacher in order to have a positive influence on America’s youth.

Vernon spent his career as an educator in El Paso, Texas. He was selected as Teacher of the Year in 1965 for Houston Elementary School, twice awarded National Science Fellowships for advanced studies in Education, served on the Mayor’s committee for education, and earned his Master’s in Education in 1966 from the University of Texas at El Paso. He finished his career as the Assistant

Principal of the largest high school in Texas, Burges High School. He and Alta moved to San Angelo in 1994.

Vernon had many hobbies, including gardening, coin collecting, and archeology. He was a military historian and collector of military memorabilia. He had 25 articles published about World War II heroes and their medals. For over 30 years he was an avid amateur archeologist specializing in prehistoric Indians of the Southwest. He and his wife participated in 20 excavations of Indian ruins, and he had 36 archeology articles published in state, regional, and national journals of archeology. Vernon helped direct the excavation of the Hot Wells Pueblo, a large prehistoric Indian ruin located near El Paso. During this excavation he discovered and wrote about a room astronomically aligned with the equinox. In 1968 he was selected as the New Mexico Archeology Society’s Outstanding Amateur Archeologist.

God ensured that Vernon’s life was an exciting adventure. As a born again Christian, he served God, his nation, his students, his community, and his family to the best of his ability. He was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School. Vernon’s children are Zanell Louise Osowski of Houston, Tx; Paula Ann Brook, PhD, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Lisle Kanin Brook of Milam, Tx.
