2013 PROGRAM FUNDING SOURCES

Dear METROsquash Family,

It’s hard to believe that during this upcoming school year we will celebrate a

decade of METROsquash. When we started with just ten Chicago Public School

5th grade students in 2005, we didn’t know that the program would grow to

serve hundreds of students, their families, and be on the cusp of building a

stand-alone academic and squash center in Woodlawn. We did believe that if

you start early with students and work with them year over year in intensive

academic, athletic, and enrichment programming that they will have a great

chance at success. Today, with over 150 students in the program, 6 students in

boarding school, 17 students in college, and millions of dollars of scholarships

earned – it is clear that the program works and is ready for the next chapter

of growth.

There are so many people who have believed in us and have helped both

the program and our students overcome many obstacles along the path. We

thank you for all your support at every stage: from getting off the ground,

to contemplating – let alone succeeding in – raising the funds to build our

center. We know definitively that METROsquash is a positive force that makes

a transformative difference in students’ lives. As a team and a family we can

overcome any challenge together.

This year’s annual report presents a compelling timeline of how we serve

students, how far our students have come, and how bright the future will be

in our new home. In our tenth season, we look forward to opening the doors

to the METROsquash Academic & Squash Center and welcoming you to the

future of the program.

Sincerely,

David Kay

Executive Director

Celebrating our students and the future of the METROsquash program

“I started METROsquash in 7th grade. It really

opened my eyes and taught me to try new

things and to have new experiences, starting

with going to boarding school. I know I will

take that with me for the rest of my life. I

tried out for the track team in 9th grade and

now hold the school record for shot put. Crazy

things happen when you put your mind to it

and METROsquash has taught me that. “

Students learn the basics of the game with

coaches and volunteers and complete

fitness training.

ACADEMICS

In the classroom, students are tested

throughout the year to ensure they are at

or above grade level in core subjects like

reading and math and work one-on-one with

tutors on their homework and supplemental

curriculum.

SSAT PREP In August, 8th grade

students attended 13 SSAT Prep Sessions, the

standardized test required for boarding school

applications. 7 students participated in these

sessions which helped them raise their SSAT

scores by an average of 64 points, with one

student raising his score by 171 points.METROsquash students

went on 36 college visits

over the 2012-2013 school

year, visiting 30 different

cities across the country.

Of these schools, 6 were

chosen by our students as

their school of choice.

Orange Team students come to practice 3

times per week and participate in equal parts

squash and fitness instruction and academic

tutoring. They also participate in travel and

enrichment activities on weekends and

during the summer.

SQUASH

Students on the Orange Team hone their

squash skills on the court and receive

opportunities to travel to compete in

tournaments and team matches locally,

nationally, and internationally.

ACADEMICS

Our main focus is to prepare students to

enter their best-match high school; whether

that is working one on one with a tutor to

improve their grades, or spending 8 weeks

with Educational Endeavors working on ISAT

prep, students are constantly challenged

in the classroom. In 8th grade, students

begin considering choosing high performing

charter, selective enrollment, parochial, and

boarding schools.

The METROsquash College Support Program maintains our relationship with each college student, whether at a vocational,

technical, professional or four-year institution, by providing them with support, resources, and access to ensure they succeed as

they move ‘in, to and through’ their post-secondary experience.

Studies show that only 39% of minority students graduate within six years of entering college. We’ve learned that consistent

support for students is critical to help students stay in school and succeed through college graduation. In the first year of the

program, METROsquash had 8 students at 8 four-year colleges and universities nationwide.

METROsquash currently uses the courts at

the University of Chicago’s Henry Crown Field

House Mondays through Saturdays after school

and on Wednesday mornings. While on the

courts, METROsquash students complete

fitness warm ups and build skills that help them

compete in tournaments and team matches.

THE SPORT

Squash’s connection to higher education and

strong networks makes it a natural partner for

our ultimate goal: college success. It instills

mental toughness, helps students become

more fit, and in turn, lead healthier lifestyles.

THE VIRTUES

Learning squash is analogous to mastering an

instrument; players must develop technique

and memorize the right steps to move and

strike the ball. METROsquash emphasizes

two critical skills to becoming a better player:

the GRIT to persevere through a challenge

and the OPTIMISM that mistakes in training

and competition teach us how to improve. By

partnering the sport of squash with access to

higher education opportunities, students learn

at an early age the importance of staying in

school, remaining on track to graduation, and

build life long friends with people of different

cultures and backgrounds

MENTORPROGRAM

COMMUNITYSERVICE

LIFE SKILLS &ENRICHMENT

The METROsquash Mentor Program began in 2007 as a

way to pair students with trusted adult role models and

deepen their experience with the program. Students stay

paired with their mentors year-over-year and the adults

help guide students through enriching experiences that

help broaden their horizons.

THE METROSQUASH MENTOR PROGRAM FOCUSES ON THE 5 C’S WITH STUDENTS:

Challenges, Choices, Consequences, Creative Solutions,

and Conclusions.

METROSQUASH HOSTED 4 GROUP MENTOR EVENTS THIS YEAR.

• Mentor Squash Day

• Mentor Day at the White Sox Game

• Mentor Tie Dye & Game Day Extravaganza

• 2014 METROsquash 5K Race (7 mentors ran with their mentees)

METROsquash students spend over 40 hours participating in

enrichment programming each year. METROsquash recruits

experts to deliver interactive seminars multiple times per year.

LIFE SKILLS SESSIONS FOCUS ON TOPICS SUCH AS:

Family Health and Wellness, Violence Prevention, Financial

Literacy, Diversity Awareness, Self Representation, and

Student Wellness.

Over the 2013-2014 school year, METROsquash held 8 Life

Skills Sessions, partnering with the following organizations

to deliver a well-rounded array of opportunities:

• Junior League of Chicago and METROsquash Healthy Habits Family Wellness Day

• Joe Bisciglia, Pro-Wrestler Alternative Fitness Day

• Monique Brinson Demery, Author Writer’s Workshop: Finding the Dragon Lady: The Mystery of Vietnam’s Madame Nhu

• Beau River, Psy.D & Former Pro Squash Player Mindfulness: Stress Management and Relaxation on the Squash Court

• Peter Dunne, Investment Analyst from Ronin Capital Financial Literacy: Understanding Savings & Spending

• Marian Kraus, Gong Sound Healing & University of Chicago Yoga Mental Wellness: Self Care and Stress Management

• The METROsquash Auxiliary Board Represent Yourself: Career and Job Readiness

• METROsquash Anti Violence Day: Say no to Bullying

METROsquash students spent over 30 hours participating

in community service activities this year.

• In November, students paired up with the University of Chicago Days of Service to clean up Washington Park.

• In December, METROsquash students and families collected over 150 canned good items to donate to local organization Port Ministries to feed families over the holidays.

• In January, students partnered with Chicago Cares and helped serve meals and play games with residents at the Martin Farrell Senior Center.

• In April, METROsquash partnered with the University Church where daily academic sessions are held to help clean up the church space. Over 40 students helped rake, paint, and clean out the space to “Spring Clean” and get the church in tip-top shape for the summer months.

“It felt really good to help clean up the church. You always

forget that this space isn’t just METROsquash- so many

different families come here and use the church, it felt

really nice to give back and help out!”

Last summer, Board Member Randy Frieser and his wife Maritza hosted 4

METROsquash students and METROsquash Mentors and Board Member

Paul and Peg Cussen for one week in El Salvador. The students stayed in

homestays with local families and participated in a squash tournament

at The Maya Club. Throughout the week, students visited art museums,

hiked a volcano, played soccer with the locals, and had an amazing

cultural experience.

This July, El Salvador students and their families will be traveling to

Chicago for the Revolution Summer Open where they will be hosted by

local Chicago families. Students will compete in a weekend long squash

tournament, complete with the best Chicago cultural experience possible.

death amongst teenagers from violent crime

rises significantly. Students are more likely

to experiment with drugs, submit to peer
