S outh Africa is the production hub on the African continent, with a vibrant and globally competitive film industry that has continued to grow year on year. From mountain ranges and urban epicentres to garden

routes and sandy beaches, this unique country has a host of locations just waiting to be discovered. South Africa has numerous state-of-the-art studios that cater to major film productions, TV series, commercials, stills and broadcast and service work.

In 2014, executives from the Producer’s Guild of America, Disney, Paramount and Warner Bros visited South Africa on a familiarisation tour, and were astounded by the depth of skills and adaptability of our many locations. Numerous international productions were brought to our shores as a result.

Each major city has its own film commission, with some doubling as provincial commissions and economic development agencies. The Department of Trade and Industry (dti ) The Department of Trade and Industry (dti ) has extended its Film and TV Producti on Incenti ve unti l March 2017.

The South African Film and Television Producti on and Co-Producti on Incenti ve is available to qualifying South African producti ons and offi cial treaty co-producti ons with total producti on budgets of R2.5-million and above.

A foreign fi lm and television producti on shooti ng at a South African locati on should have Qualifying South African Producti on Expenditure (QSAPE) of R12-million and above. The Post-Producti on incenti ve is available to foreign-owned qualifying producti ons with Qualifying South African Post-Producti on Expenditure (QSAPPE) of R1.5-million and above.

The Nati onal Film & Video Foundati on provides fi lm and video-related funding in four broad categories:• Development Funding• Educati on & Training• Producti on Funding• Marketi ng & Distributi on

Development Funding:The NFVF considers development as any work undertaken to put an idea or concept into writi ng with an intenti on of creati ng a script including research undertaken in a documentary, a short or a feature fi lm whether fi cti on or real life. The NFVF also provides fi nancial support to the development of television concepts that can be formatt ed, sold globally and licensed for remake rights or for syndicati on.

Educati on and Training Funding:In order to sti mulate and advance skills development, meet the current needs of industry, and to ensure the industry’s future growth and competi ti veness, the NFVF provides funding for nati onal bursaries, internati onal bursaries and grants to organisati ons that off er training and development programmes.

Producti on Funding:One of the NFVF’s strategic objecti ves is to increase the number of South African fi lms and previously disadvantaged individuals producing

them. Producti on funding is given for feature fi lms, short fi lms and documentaries. In additi on, the NFVF has set aside a R1-million grant each year for the purchase of archive material for feature-length and hour-long documentaries.

Marketi ng and Distributi on FundingThe objecti ve of the grant is to provide fi nancial support to fi lmmakers and distributors to promote their product at fi lm markets and festi vals eff ecti vely. Producti ons with budgets of R2.5-million and above will receive support for Print & Adverti sing of posters and such small items excluding adverti sing print for larger posters.

Industrial Development Corporati onThe IDC is a self-fi nancing, state-owned nati onal development fi nance insti tuti on, which plays a key role in fi nancing South African fi lms, especially co-producti ons. The IDC generally caps its investments at 49% of the overall budget. S outh Africa has long been known for its world-class capabilities in content production, and is one of the leading producers of local, regional and international content in Africa. 2015 saw a rise in the quality of local productions, with a number

of television series and films receiving acclaim and success in the international arena.

Cape Town Film Studios and Film Afrika saw Starz commit to a fourth season of Black Sails last year, while National Geographic also brought Saints and Strangers to the studios. British broadcaster ITV commissioned a four-part drama series called Tutankhamun, which began shooting in South Africa in late 2015. Lung Animation was involved in the visual effects for BBC series Our Girl, while Triggerfish Animation Studios together with Magic Light Productions brought Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man to life for BBC’s festive season. ABC Studios’ first large-budget series filmed on location in Cape Town; Of Kings And

Prophets was a monumental production that ploughed millions into training and skills development in the local sector. Moonlighting brought the latest Resident Evil to SA last year, as well as The Dark Tower in 2016.

On the local front, 2015 was a relatively strong year for film and television productions, with renowned producer Anant Singh receiving two lifetime awards for his work to date, including Mandela: Long Walk

to Freedom, The First Grader, and most recently, the critically acclaimed Apartheid-era drama Shepherds and Butchers, directed by Oliver Schmitz. Romantic comedies also saw a popular streak in the South African box office, from the likes of Akin Otomoso’s visually stunning production Tell

Me Sweet Something to Thabang Moleya’s Happiness is a Four-Letter Word, which earned over R5-million in its first ten days of release. Afrikaans films have also received strong response from local and international audiences, with the likes of Vir Altyd, Die Windpomp and many more capturing the hearts of film-goers everywhere.

In television, reality formats have really been taking off. Versions of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! were filmed on location in SA in 2015, while Cooked in Africa’s Ultimate Braai Master went global in 2016 when it was picked up by the Travel Channel. Sasani Studios in Johannesburg plays host to M-Net’s The Voice SA, as well as The Voice

Francophone, both firsts for the continent.

Film RequirementsSouth Africa is a fairly easy country to film in, with strong commercial service and production capabilities. Location permits can be obtained through regional film commissions or via location scouts or managers. Internationals filming in the country should be aware of recently

updated visa regulations, and should apply for the required permits well ahead of shoot schedules. Visas are no longer issued at SA’s ports of entry, but should be applied for at South African missions or consulates abroad. Visas are granted for work in the production of a film or show, and a valid passport or travel document, an application form, a prescribed fee, a statement or documentation confirming the purpose of your visit, and two colour passport images among other things should be submitted. Getting There By AirSouth Africa is well-connected to the rest of the world with three major international airports and dozens of smaller ones across the country. Most international carriers stop at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, while Cape Town International Airport services regions further south, and King Shaka International Airport in Durban is a business hub for the East coast.

ClimateSouth Africa has a temperate, Mediterranean climate overall, with winter months between June and August and summer months stretching from November to February.

T here’s a Tshi proverb from Ghana that says, “If everyone helps to hold up the sky, then one person does not become tired,” and in South Africa that pan-African aphorism is expressed in the country’s Ubuntu moral philosophy, described by Nobel

laureate Desmond Tutu simply as, “I am, because you are.” Ubuntu is an inclusive national treasure that promotes co-operation

and honesty among different peoples towards collective successes: “We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world.”

In South Africa’s film industry, this attitude is visibly active in the country’s present push towards more co-production treaties and increased international engagement with outside organisations. Prior to 2014, South Africa had eight co-production treaties in place, with Germany, Canada, and the UK contributing the most at a combined R163.2-million, and in 2015, the country saw further progress made with the Netherlands, Brazil, Kenya and Nigeria.

“The treaty between the Netherlands and South Africa has been eagerly awaited by professionals in both countries in order to create a

comprehensive structure for creative bilateral co-operation,” said Doreen Boonekamp, CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund. Zama Mkosi, CEO of South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), was equally encouraging: “Filmmakers from both our countries are also going to benefit from the DTI incentive scheme, with its aim to encourage and attract big-budget productions and post production. We look forward to ‘co-creating’ and enhancing the international profile of both the countries through our storytelling.”

Triggerfish, a Cape Town-based animation studio, was an award-winning ambassador for the country’s collaborative efforts in 2015 through their inaugural Story Lab development initiative (held in partnership with The Walt Disney Company and the DTI) and their work on Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man with Magic Light Pictures in London.

According to PWC’s latest Media Outlook report, South Africa’s box office and cinema advertising is expected to rise from R1.5-billion (2014) to R1.9-billion by 2019, the same year the electronic home-video sector will hit a billion, revenues from foreign films increased by 6%, and a soft Rand, makes the country’s wealth of first-rate crews, its

S outh Africa’s commercial-service sector is one of the most acclaimed aspects of South Africa’s film industry. The country’s world-class production and service houses continue to attract the attention of international brands and

producers by leveraging years of excellence in commercial services through sought-after support and technical talents.

Tried and tested crews, reliable and top-notch suppliers and service providers, spectacular locations, attractive exchange rates and government support all add up to one of most vibrant and successful sectors in South Africa’s image industry, with Johannesburg, Durban and, in particular, Cape Town acting as the hub of commercial activity. South Africa’s stills sector is constantly adapting to new and evolving technologies brought about by increased competition and the shifting New Media; challenging photographers, industry organisations and related image-orientated services to experiment, innovate, and—most of all—captivate and impress.

S outh Africa has established itself as a versatile and desirable destination for international series to shoot and screen their productions. In recent years, acclaimed international series like Black Sails from Starz and Syfy’s Dominion (Film Afrika),

Showtime’s Homeland (Moonlighting), and the BCC’s Wallander and Bluestone 42 (Out of Africa) have found success and support under South African skies.

“Locally we know that we are in a position to present Cape Town and many other areas in SA as locations doubling for elsewhere in the world,” said Deon du Preez, Locations Managers Guild of America Award nominee, “it’s just great to know that the word is now ‘out there’, hopefully resulting in convincing more big productions and studios to come out this way.”

In addition to hosting a successful string of international productions, the country continued to increase its support for local content creation as new technologies and changing consumer habits are opening up massive, previously untapped, markets thirsty for quality local and international content on demand. According to a recent PWC report, South Africa is experiencing rapid growth of mobile subscription services and internet access, while the electronic home video sector is expected to continue to grow sharply: “There’s an almighty gold rush to try and put in fibre and that’s bringing in streaming services,” notes the trend analyst Dion Chang of Flux Trends.

South Africa, indeed Africa, has seen a variety of competing VOD services launched over the last year. In addition to VIDI (Times Media), Front Row (MTN), and Node (Altech), new service offerings from outside and within (e.g. OnTapTV, SAVuka TV, Buni.tv, ShowMax, and Netflix) targeted South Africa’s emerging digital markets in the wake of new and extensive broadband installations, as well as in anticipation of the digital migration.

“We know connectivity is coming to South Africa,” said Napster spokesman, Richard Boorman, whose company launched both Showmax and OnTapTV in 2015: “The thinking from our end is to make sure we are investing now to take advantage of the boom in connectivity.”

South Africa’s local content was recognised at the country’s leading industry awards, the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), which featured a variety of the country’s top productions. There were engaging wildlife programmes (Game of Lions, Hippos VS

Croc and Elephant Gangs); popular comedy shows (ZAnews: Puppet

Nation, Check Coast and Lastborn Does The Loeries); quality Afrikaans productions (Donkerland, Binnerlanders, Swartwater, 90 Plein Street); progressive African dramas (Isibaya, Rhythm City, Isidingo, and Muvhango); and reality shows like Kabelo Boot Camp, Ultimate Braai

Master and MasterChef SA confirmed the country’s love of the genre: “South Africa is fast-becoming a reality TV hub,” said Visual Impact’s director, Marius van Straaten.

S outh Africa’s film history can trace its roots back to early documentaries in the late 1900s. Its first feature film came in 1910 with the Springbok Film Company’s The Great Kimberley

Diamond Robbery, but now, twenty-one years into the world’s most diverse democracy, South Africa’s image industry is searching outside and within for new voices, relationships and opportunities for growth and development.

The challenges presented by socio-political forces such as globalisation and multiculturalism are, worldwide, sizeable and important, and motion pictures and ideas have become a valuable cultural currency in the twenty-first century. In South Africa, towards meeting these challenges, more studios are embracing 4K, HD and other exciting emerging technologies; co-production treaties are being sought and signed to open up new markets and means; international representation and engagements are on the rise; the festival circuit is charged with purpose-driven diversity and showcase the country’s best alongside a host of international features; film commissions and governmental organisations increase their support for professionals and international clients, creating jobs and further opportunities for innovation to arise; and young filmmaker’s hard-hitting stories are heard as the creative industry pushes its passion for pictures and technology forward.

The National Film and Video Foundation revealed that the industry contributed R5.64-billion to economic activity in 2014, creating thousands of jobs and new opportunities in the process, and the production industry itself is expected to grow by 3.3% from US$977-million to US$1.2-billion by 2018. According to Tracey Williams, Managing Director at Refinery, one of the country’s leading post-production facilities, “the quality and storytelling of our SA films has

improved hugely. It is a tough business to compete at our local box office, but films are finding their audiences.”

Some of the highlights included Sara Blecher’s highly-anticipated second film Ayanda which earned positive international attention and praise, Donovan Marsh’s stylish action flick iNumber Number received multiple AMAA nominations and won three awards at the 2015’s South Africa Film and Television Awards, Ian Gabriel’s hard-hitting and gritty gangster flick Four Corners scored four SAFTAs; Ernest Nkosi’s Zulu drama Thina Sobabili: The Two of Us was South Africa’s official submission to the 88th Academy Awards and won the Pan African Film Festival’s Audience Award, Sibs Shongwe-La Mer’s framing of restless millenials in Necktie Youth enjoyed its premiere in Berlin International Film Festival, Jenna Cato Bass’ Love The One You Love won Best Feature Film at the Jozi Film Festival, Oliver Hermanus’ The Endless River screened at the Venice International Film Festival and won the Tanit d’ Argent award in Carthage, and Catherine Stewart’s While You Weren’t Looking received the Pink Apple Audience Award in Zurich: “I think the industry is healthy and finding new ways to deal with the demands of the new media… as long as people are open and daring, some interesting things could happen,” said Akin Omotoso, director of Tell Me Sweet Something.

There are, however, still serious economic and technological challenges towards developing and promoting a competitive, diverse and sustainable film industry. But the unstoppable rise of animation, more support and initiatives from industry and governmental organisations, the growing success and influence of women across all areas of industry, the emergence of creative young storytelling talents and independent filmmakers, as well as increased festival and market exposure, are all positive signs from a dedicated creative industry bent on imaging a better tomorrow, together, today.

M ade of Black was the powerful slogan for AMV BBDO’s award-winning campaign that won Gold at Cannes Lion 2015, but that moving message from Guinness Africa was also part of a bigger celebration of pan-Africanism,

both in style and content. Graham Lang, Chief Creative Officer of Y&R, praised the

creative storytelling power of African voices, but also recognised the challenge when designing content for home and away: “We’ve become really good at producing locally relevant stories and locally relevant film,” Lang said, mentioning Nando’s comedic campaigns as an example, but that “as a nation, we should never start tailoring our ideas and stories to each international award show requirement.” The desire for authentic African narratives is strong, and 2015’s top directors encapsulated that spirit with inspired campaigns for Africa.

Joe Public’s The Notebook, directed by Velocity Film’s Grey Gray for Dial Direct, was another Cannes winner that tugged on universal heartstrings in a local light. “I’ve been saving you time, so you can come to my play” was the line that sold it after a young boy runs around ticking off errands in his notebook to help his overworked mother save time: her hero. In addition to winning a Bronze at Cannes, The Notebook was awarded Silver at the 37th Annual Loerie Awards while Arcade Content’s Rob Smith earned a Bronze Lion for One Rand Man: another original campaign from one of South Africa’s leading agencies, The King James Group. In One Rand Man, the agency stylishly showcased Sanlam’s Social Experiment For National Savings

Month, helping Sanlam’s brand rise to the top of Loeries’ official rankings for 2015.

South Africa’s commercial creativity also shone at the 37th Annual Loerie Awards with golds going to One-of-a-Kind (The King James Group) and again to Made of Black for its authentic audacity. Overall, Sam Brown (Rogue Films), Kim Geldenhuys (Academy Films), Terence Neale (Egg Films), Rob Smith (Arcade Content), and Maged Nassar (Impact BBDO Dubai) were named as the top five television, film and video directors by Loeries, with The King James Group, Ogilvy & Mather, Johannesburg, and Y&R SA recognised as the country’s top agencies.

South African campaigns are performing fairly well internationally, but as Graham Cruikshank, director of African Operations for TBWA notes, the rest of the continent is still underrepresented at major award ceremonies by comparison: “We simply need to look inwards to our own African insights. Let’s get African brands to reflect the stories behind them. I n 1959, Walt Disney, in an episode of the Disneyland television program, described “the plausible impossible” as one of the central tenets of animation—across all its variants, animation can, quite literally in the twenty-first century, render

ideas in dream for business or pleasure. Such is the magic and wonder of animation, and it’s a creative aspiration South Africa has set its sights on: to share its own storytelling and technical talents through one of the modern world’s most beloved and dynamic genres.

Animation is visibly on the rise in Africa; it’s one of the most exciting and active industries on the continent. In South Africa, this zealous zeitgeist is being spearheaded by one Cape Town-based studio that’s quickly become one of most successful and inspired studios on the continent.

Founded in 1996, Triggerfish Studios (Africa’s answer to Pixar) embraced the real challenge of animation in Africa and has, most notably, produced two world-class feature films (Adventures in

Zambezia and Khumba); animated Julia Donaldson’s Stick Man for the award-winning, London-based production house Magic Light Pictures (with Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes soon on the way); and in 2015, in partnership with The Walt Disney Company and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Triggerfish launched its inaugural initiative ‘Story Lab’ designed to find, foster, and fund storytelling talents from around the continent.

While Triggerfish is proudly paving the way, it’s gritty success was part of a broader flourishing of competitive studios and production houses offering the full spectrum of technical and creative services. There was also an increase in support and interest from government, further creative collaborations with international studios and artists, and other necessary industry structures like Animation South Africa (an industry non-profit) and The Animation School (a leading local specialist in animation training) continued to develop and promote the industry from within for this generation and the next.

Sea Monster, Sunrise Productions, Sparks Flew, Strika Entertainment, The Flying Circus, Bug Box, Animate, Zeropoint, Mind’s Eye Creative, Luma, KeyFrame, Wicked Pixels, Lung, Blue Forest Collective, Pixelsmith, Sphere and others are busy creating world-class content for films, businesses and developers, and innovating in new media as part of a greater pan-African push towards excellence in animation services and storytelling.

T here’s an African proverb that says: “When the music changes, so does the dance”, and while the face of the music industry in the twenty-first century is changing faster than most artists and production houses would like, South Africa

is fast adapting to new digital demands and challenging consumer trends. “This isn’t only a South African problem, it’s a global one,” said artist and businessman, Oscar Mdlongwa, “Artists need to find innovative ways of marketing themselves.”

While music sales worldwide are being affected by new online music services and downloads, South African directors like Ryan Kruger (Enigma Films), Adriaan Louw, Terence Neale (Egg), and Kyle

Lewis (Arcade Content) are producing award-winning music videos that showcase the country’s long history and love for sound and storytelling. “I like to incorporate local stories into international concepts. I feel like there are so many talented filmmakers in this country who just stick to what sells easily in the local market,” said Ryan Kruger, whose excellent work in 2015 was recognised at both the South Africa Music Awards (SAMA) and the inaugural Short & Sweet Music Video Awards (S&SMVA).

The government has also pledged further support for South Africa’s music industry, and at the 12th annual Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition, Mandla Maseko, Deputy Chairperson of the Moshito board, detailed their mission “to build a music and exhibition show that is relevant in Africa and other music markets. Our perspective is a continental issue focusing on business ideologies for the music markets, in creating and growing the creative economy.”

Chicken Licken - The Great Escape

Hailing from the townships of Zimbabwe during the turmoil of the Civil War, Sunu’s career path reads more like a movie than real life. Sunu returned to South Africa in 2013 aft er a seven-year sti nt in Los Angeles, where he directed Pride for Lionsgate, starring Oscar-nominee Terrence Howard. He’s fi lmed award-winning commercials for some of the world’s biggest brands, including Nike and Coca Cola.

Terence developed an appreciati on of street culture by watching skate videos on VHS tapes and loitering in city parks – an aestheti c prevalent in his work today. Terence’s ads and music videos for the likes of Adidas Originals, Skrillex and Die Antwoord have over 150 million views on YouTube. Not one to choose sides, Terence’s talent is to employ both visual and narrati ve storytelling in his work.

VATICVatic is a creative studio co-founded by photographer Brett Rubin and art director and stylist Nicole Van Heerden. A strong contributor to South Africa’s economy, the province of Gauteng is home to a number of powerhouses in the film industry. From television corporations to production giants and post-production moguls, this pulsing urban

environment is an ever-moving picture of health and innovation. In recent years the Gauteng Film Commission has strengthened its support role in the region, championing local productions and placing them in front of audiences both local and international.

South Africa recognised the creative industries – including film and TV – as a priority sector in the Industrial Policy Action Plan 2014/15-2016/17 (IPAP). As a result, the Commission plays a large role in promoting Gauteng as a brand and destination with a bulk of the country’s creative talent congregating in this region. Large-scale production and post-production companies like Velocity and Refinery, and many of the country’s biggest broadcast studios – Sasani, Atlas, SABC Henley to name a few – all have a presence in the province.

The GFC has facilitated 157 productions between 2014 and 2015, formed two broadcast partnerships, created 1 575 temporary jobs through project support, ad facilitated 157 productions. A total of R4.28-million was spent on industry support and development, from film content production and distribution to partnerships, management and mentorship.

Filming RequirementsGauteng has a host of diverse locations within its borders - from the gold mines that dot the industrial landscape of Johannesburg to the majestic Magaliesberg mountain range, the province offers a naturally rugged landscape interspersed with agricultural farmland. With some of the most pristine and green suburbs in the world, Gauteng flaunts urban streetscapes with a wealth of Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Modernist and International architectural styles.

Numerous nature reserves holding all manner of wildlife (including the ‘Big Five’) are within convenient reach in the province. These are issued by local authorities and each application is treated individually and each local municipality applies its own rules and regulations. The GFC assists in identifying suitable locations, as well as with permit support.

Getting There By AirGauteng is a hub of connectivity for both locals and internationals travelling through the country and the continent. Its largest airport is OR Tambo International Airport, while Lanseria and a number of other smaller airports provide inter-city connections. Most international carriers have stopovers in Johannesburg.

ClimateGauteng is said to offer one of the world’s best climates with warm summer days and crisp, clear winters. The province has mild weather conditions that are neither too humid nor too hot, with flexible seasons spilling over into each other.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is renowned for its incredible, eye-catching locations and its ability to attract almost anyone to its borders. This is evident even in tourism, with locals and internationals alike flocking to Durban’s Golden Mile over the holiday season.

The festival circuit seems to love this laid-back city, too, with Durban International Film Festival and the Durban FilmMart taking place each year along the warm, sunny beach during South Africa’s winter months.

In 2015, KZN announced a strategic plan to attract more visitors to the destination by further facilitating the film industry – an endeavour that has been proven across the world to draw millions of audience members to their favourite movie spots. As such, the region has three major film industry bodies to support the sector: the Durban Film Office, the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) and the Zulu Coast Film Office.

The overall indications are that the South African film industry is set on an upward trajectory, boosted by its incredible locations and

fascinating cultural history. KZN is uniquely placed as a destination according to the KZNFC’s Annual Report for 2015, and ranks third as a film location after Gauteng and the Western Cape. Although the two already have defined niche markets, KwaZulu-Natal is still refining its approach and as such will continue to develop the local film sector. A triumph for the region was the production of Hard To Get, a Romeo-and-Juliette-esque tale set against a gritty backdrop, produced by Helena Spring and Junaid Ahmed, and directed by Zee Ntuli.

KZNFC attended 14 local and international markets last year and took part in six co-production forums, while a total of 38 film projects were approved for development and production funding, and R1.3-million was disbursed for 25 film-related bursaries. There are approximately 175 KwaZulu-Natal firms involved in film and television production. Survey results from Baseline Research for the KZNFC in July 2015 show that 57.4% of these businesses provide training, including internships, on-set training, and specific skills training. F rom pristine natural locations to top-notch commercial service companies, production houses, and post and animation studios, the Western Cape is known across the world for its full bouquet of film offerings. On its

southernmost tip lies Cape Town, a vibrant city filled with creatives from all walks of life. Some of the most innovative ideas have come from this region, with international productions like Dredd

3D, Black Sails, SAF3 and many more shooting on location in Cape Town and its surrounds in recent years. Local films from this region have also been having success, with Triggerfish Animation Studios’ Khumba, Stick Man and Adventures in Zambezia garnering international attention, and Jenna Bass receiving critical acclaim for Love The One

You Love, for instance. The Western Cape has a number of high-profile studios currently

in operation, with the largest being Cape Town Film Studios where international productions like Black Sails, Mandela: Long Walk to

Freedom and Saints and Strangers were facilitated. The studio has recently exponded to accommodate more work. Other notable studios with space for hire include Waterfront Film Studios who worked on The Giver, Atlantic Studios, currently home to kykNET’s newest soap opera Suidooster, and Okuhle Media who facilitate a number of broadcast programmes including SABC’s Hectic Nine-9.

The region is a commercial service hub, with both international, local and regional agencies shooting their film and television formats, advertisements and branded content in the Cape. According to Wesgro Film and Media Promotion, over 2 500 direct service providers offer skills across facilitation, production, technical services and the creative arena. It is also a melting pot of talent, with all sorts of ethnicities and faces available for shoots. Some of the productions to film in the region recently include Homeland Season 4, Of Kings And Prophets, Dominion, Momentum, and Eye in the Sky.

Film RequirementsCape Town is considered one of the top ten film production centres in the world, with the lowest annual operating costs including property, labour, and utilities in the film and TV industry when benchmarked against other film cities like Johannesburg, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, London, New York and Paris (fDi Benchmark). As such, it isn’t difficult to obtain film permits in the City of Cape Town – although these do take time to process and should be applied for as early as possible. The City of Cape Town has the only formalised system for location permits in the province, therefore it is advisable to inquire with various commissions, governing bodies or location scouts outside of the city.

Due to recent changes in visa requirements, passport holders both from non-exempt and visa-exempt countries must apply for short-term work visas. These must be done from the country of origin rather than at a Port of Entry, so it’s once again advisable to start preparing travel documents as early as possible.

Getting There by AirAbout 20km from the CBD is Cape Town International Airport, which services the region. A number of international carriers including Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Qatar, British Airways, South African

Airways, Turkish Air and others offer daily and weekly flights to and from the airport, with direct flights to several destinations in Africa, Asia and Europe. It also has direct flights to South Africa’s other two main urban areas, Johannesburg and Durban, as well as flights to smaller centres in South Africa. Smaller carriers like Mango, Kulula and SA Express connect the city to outlying regions, while George Airport services the Garden Route along the eastern coast.

ClimateThe Western Cape enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and a low rainfall which alternates with relatively mild, wet winters. Temperatures near the coast range from lows of 7 degrees in Winter to highs of 32 degrees in Summer.

T his Equatorial location is a sublime magnet for filmmakers who can capture their magic moment with spectacular Kenyan backdrops. It offers excellent safari game reserves and award-winning lodges; Kenya has, after all, built its

reputation as a fantastic safari destination. The 1985 movie Out

of Africa introduced the international audience to the splendour of Kenya’s locations and opened the eyes of filmmakers.

This year-round sunny locale boasts unspoiled beaches and an abundance of wildlife; a spectacle to behold is the million or so lesser flamingos of Lake Nakuru or the wondrous Amboseli National Park, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro which is famous for elephant

sightings. A filmmaker is also privy to the magnificent migration of wildebeest into the Tanzanian Serengeti plains. Other awe-inspiring sights include the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya and the world’s largest tropical lake, Lake Victoria.

Academy Award winner for 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong’o is the country’s most famous A-list actress. Her success though, does not mirror that of the industry. Kenya has a film hub called Riverwood Studios, the moniker alludes to Hollywood and is also derived from River Road, where it is situated and is enjoying dynamic development.

Riverwood-made movies are low-budget, shot in days and then quickly edited. Its marketing is done on posters and distribution is straight to DVD. The content and actors are local; and audiences are enthralled because of their identification with their seemingly authentic storylines.

Where once it was the number one African destination for foreign films, it has struggled in recent years with 2015 being especially grim. South Africa’s tax incentive system has been so successful, that even a Kenyan story as raw the attack on its Westgate Mall in 2013 will be shot there. To stem the tide, the government has given initial approval for a tax rebate that more than competes with South Africa’s.

N amibia is a country of compelling beauty, abundant sunshine, and a feeling of unconfined space; its population density is 2.6 per km2. This magnificent locale offers stunning sand dunes and the opportunity to descend into

Africa’s largest canyon, the Fish River Canyon. It is also home to two of the World’s Heritage Sites. The Namib Sand Sea is covered by shifting sand dunes and Twyfelfontein has the largest concentration of rock engravings in Africa.

Film HistoryWith 300 days of sunshine on average annually, it is an ideal setting to shoot films. Namibia has hosted productions such as 2010’s The

Cell and most recently and famously Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie has achieved unprecedented and widespread acclaim. Recently it won

six Academy Awards – it was nominated for ten. Other prestigious accolades include the four awards it garnered at the British Academy Film Awards. Striking Namibian locales captured the imaginations of the mesmerised audience and bodes well to attract more filmmakers to its shores.

Swakopmund is a popular base for film crews, and television shows have been filmed there because of the city’s colonial history and buildings. Other notable productions include Flight of the Phoenix and 10,000 B.C. Bizarrely, the most famous Namibian star is Shiloh John Jolie Pitt, daughter of Angelina Jolie Pitt who had shot Beyond Borders there in 2003. Namibia’s first home-grown feature film, Katutura, premiered in 2015 and will be screened at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles later this year.

Visiting productions must apply for a film permit from the Namibia Film Commission, whose mandate it is to promote and support film in the country. There are no film studios, nor tax incentives for foreign films and commercials, but plans to attract foreign filmmakers are in the offing. Film festivals held before include the Wild Cinema Windhoek International Film Festival, as well as the biennial Namibian Theatre and Film Awards last held in 2014.

Interesting Facts:• There are Namibian animal trainers available to provide sets with

trained domestic and wild animals. • Namibia has experts to undertake environmental impact

assessments and rehabilitation of film locations. This is to ensure that crews do not harm the environment.

ClimateIt is mostly desert and therefore exhibits archetypal weather for such a clime. Rainfall is sparse; with the north-eastern areas of Namibia getting the most rain.

T his West African country, Nigeria, is the most populous nation in Africa and the seventh worldwide. Abuja is Nigeria’s capital city and Lagos is its largest city. The latter is the predominant hub of its prolific film industry, which has been dubbed

Nollywood. It is the second-biggest film industry based on volume in the world, trailing only India’s Bollywood. It churns out about 2 500 movies annually, with budgets of up to $25,000 each, which require a few weeks to produce. The movies are not known for technical prowess, whereas the better known Hollywood and Bollywood have expensive sets and equipment, Nollywood comparably operates on a shoe-string.

The industry is so popular because it is successfully tells the African story to its audience which is African or from its diaspora. In this way, they have been able to export more than just a narrative, but a culture and lifestyle as well; successfully melding its traditions and values with modernity.

Film HistoryIt was established during the digital revolution of the early 1990s when 35-millimetre film cameras were phased out and were replaced by camcorders. The industry is now also Nigeria’s second-largest employer

and films are available on satellite and cable television channels as well as on iRokoTV. Netflix has also launched in Nigeria. Most of the films are in English, but some are in indigenous Nigerian languages too.

The challenges of the industry are piracy, lack of distribution through cinematic channels and actual cinema infrastructure. However, that has not deterred the industry or diminished the power and clout it wields. During the region’s Ebola outbreak in 2014, actors were roped in to the national Ebola awareness campaigns and it is generally believed that this staved off the epidemic in Nigeria. In fact, a movie about it starring Danny Glover was made called 93 days. Other notable Nigerian productions include Fifty, Diary of a Lagos Girl, Blood Sisters and The Encounter. The 2010 Anchor Baby, was the first Nollywood film sold on iTunes.

The Nigerian-UK production Half of a Yellow Sun is said to have had a budget of about US$9-million and the most expensive Nigerian film ever made. Nigerian investment comprised 80% of the budget. It was shot in Calabar, which also hosts the fully equipped, revamped Tinapa film studio now called Hi-TV’s Paradise Studios – other new studio additions include Rapid Blue’s Within the Box and MNet Nigeria’s production facility.
