Articles written by: McKenzie, Lee, and

Amber

Welcome and Congratulations to our newest member: Lee, She is our newest RN. Our newest Promotions: McKenzie as RCC in Bldg. B and

Amber as our community relations.

McKenzie:

I came to Farmington because I was interested in pursuing a career in caregiving. They were gracious enough to take a chance on me, and now I have been at this facility for a year and a half. It's been a great learning experience, first being a caregiver and then a med tech. I have really learned a lot working here. I got my CNA a few months ago so I could have a li le more experience under my belt. I love working with the residents, and I am excited for my new posi on here as RCC. One of my other interests outside of work is definitely volleyball. I coached JV2 at Creswell high school this year and I also play on a women's league eve‐ry Monday night. In my spare  me I also enjoy spending  me with my friends and family. I am really excited to see where this new posi on will take me and look forward to con nuing to be a part of a great team.

Lee has been an RN for almost 27 yrs., with an extensive nursing back ground to include:  long‐term care, Hospice, home health, the OR, and dialysis. Born and raised in Colorado, she has lived in the Eugene/Springfield area since Spring 2014,

acquiring a historic house, a er

reloca ng from the Salem/Monmouth area, as well as the Southern Oregon Coast. In her free me, she can be found reading,

drawing, cooking, enjoying music, trips to the coast, family, friends, and her numerous furry family members.

Announcements

This month is the  me for caring and sharing your heart. I would like to take a mo‐ment to recommend a Book By: Brene Brown, called  Daring Greatly. This is an in‐spiring outlook on living Wholeheartedly.  For those of you who dare to read it you won’t be sorry. Happy Valen ne’s Day, Gina

Visit your doctor – Ge ng your blood pressure tested and learning what your blood pressure should be is a great first step to a healthy heart.

Stop Harmful Behaviors—Unhealthy ea ng  habits and smoking are two of the biggest  contributors to heart disease. If you struggle with

either of these behaviors, take steps to  reduce or quit.  Increase Physical Ac vity— To improve overall

cardiovascular health the American Heart  Associa on recommends at least 150 minutes per

week of moderate exercise. That is about thirty minutes of aerobic ac vity at least five days a week. Not sure you can give it that much? Something is be er than nothing! Try one of our many exercise classes that we offer throughout the week, you can find them in our ac vity calendar.

Improve Diet— A healthful diet of nutrient dense fruits and vegetables will go a long way in improving heart health. Maintaining a healthy weight is essen al to heart health. Avoid foods high in sugar and sodium and increase amounts of vegetables and fruits to easily improve your diet.

Get Good Quality Sleep‐‐ Not ge ng enough sleep or ge ng too much sleep may put you at risk for heart disease according to

researchers at the Center for Cohort Studies at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital. Make efforts to get at least six hours of good quality sleep to help reduce your risks.

Show yourself some love this February by focusing on your heart health!

It’s all coming up hearts this February, but not just in prepara on for Cupid’s arrival. In efforts to raise awareness about the importance of heart health, Feb‐ruary has been designated Na onal Heart Health Month. Heart disease  remains a paramount concern, and leading reason of death, for people aged 65 years and older, according to the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Preven on (CDC). It affects 37 percent of men and 26 percent of women 65 and older.

In a na onal effort to prevent 1 million heart a acks and strokes in the United States by 2017, the CDC is encouraging Americans to make blood pressure control their goal. Adults of any age should know their blood pressure, and if it is high focus on controlling their blood pressure through diet, exercise, and in some cases, medica on. We aim to encourage our staff, families and residents to focus on their own heart health this month with these five easy steps to a healthy heart:

Five Steps to a Healthy Heart:

In light of wishing to honor our veterans, we would like to create a “Hero’s Wall” displayed in Co age A. We are asking every family member who wishes to have their loved one honored to  supply a photo of their loved one dressed in military a re from “back in the day”. Our plan is to enlarge the pictures to an 8x10 photo with their name, rank, and branch that they served in,  frame the photos  and display them in the facility.  If anyone would like to par cipate and help us make this happen, please contact

Tawnya Friese,

Resident Care Coordinator in Co age A.
