Ms. Hoffman's 2nd graders
at East explored place value
with food! The students used
marshmallows, toothpicks and
fruit loops to represent num-
bers to 1000. It was hard to
get great pictures because the
food was disappearing into
hungry little mouths as the
projects were completed! Fun
day at school!

North teachers have been
busy starting the year with
Positive Behavior Support
assemblies modeling good
behavior for our students. We
focus on children taking care
of "Myself, Others and Prop-
erty" (MOP). We give
students "bubbles" for
good behavior, but some-
times they have to MOP
up their poor behavior
choices and clean up
their acts. Our fourth
grade teachers are busy
demonstrating how
learning to reflect on poor
choices and clean up their acts
can be a good thing and make
them even better students!

worked in Mr. Beidelman's
sixth grade science class to
determine if sugar affected
the growth of flowers. The
students had a control
flower in just plain water,
and another flower in sugar
water. Students were using
this experiment to work
through the scientific
method. Students
developed a testable
question, a hypothesis, the
materials needed, recorded
data, and will then formu-
late a conclusion based on
their results. This was a
great hands on student-
directed lesson that
allowed the students to
apply their knowledge!

At the Freshman School,
Laurie Burriss learned
about her students through
completion of a “411
quiz,” and in turn, students
completed a teacher quiz to
better know her. To assess
their readiness, students
completed a reading and
writing self-assessment, and
then shared out as a whole
group. Kris Hensley utilized
a questionnaire to better
know his students' interests.
To build a team-like atmos-
phere, Mr. Hensley had
students present their answers
to the class. Eric Flaig’s
students completed a student
background questionnaire,
which focused on their
interests and hobbies, as well
as a questionnaire that
focused on their learning
styles, strengths, weaknesses,
and future planning. Mr.
Flaig plans to utilize these
tools to tailor his intervention
classes to student’s needs.

Wellness Spotlight Meet Amanda Shur, Counselor at Fairfield High School. Her
before and after pictures show you the hard work and dedication
she put into her transformation! She has, at this point, lost 80
pounds! Yes, that is correct – 80!
Aug. 2013 and
still going
Before July, 2012
What did she do to help her accomplish this feat? Here are some
tips and one of her favorite recipes!
If you struggle with having time to cook each night - make
food ahead of time.
Eat every 2-3 hours. Make smart choices.
Eat a lot of lean protein.
Put a slice of lemon in water and drink it all day!
Eat bread- just make it whole wheat.
Keep a food journal of everything you put in your
mouth.
You can cheat once in a while. Just be smart. Eat a
slice of pizza but have a salad with it.
Make it a family affair.
One of my favorite new recipes - totally satisfies that
pizza craving - Whole wheat pita bread
Pizza sauce w/garlic, pepper, oregano and basil
Chicken - cut in pieces - already baked
shredded mozzarella cheese
Cover pita bread w/spray butter
Spread sauce & chicken on top - Place in oven for 2
minutes @ 450
Spread cheese on top - Place back in oven for 6-7 minutes
@ 450

TYRON HARPER (SR) - Football / WR
"Tyron had 11 catches for 166 yards and 2
touchdowns in a win over Beavercreek on
Friday
Aug. 30.
The 11
catches
are a
new
school
record.
The
previous
record
was 10."

Volleyball
"Lexi is our setter,
captain and a 3-year
varsity starter. At
3-0, she's a huge
reason we're
undefeated totaling
14 kills, 13 digs, 7
aces (team leader),
84 assists (2nd in the
GMC) and 9.33
assists/game (3rd in
the city). As a
setter, there's a lot of pressure to
always make the right play, track
down every ball and manage the
game correctly. Lexi excels in
every one of these areas. Not only
is Lexi our first server - leading our
team in aces - but because of her
consistent sets, Lexi has
helped develop our young
hitters into a formidable
offense."
