NEWS AND NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Many thanks to all of our families for coming out and supporting the junior

students at our Spring Musical. What an amazing performance and celebration

to kick off our Education Week.

Education Week – themed We Inspire Hope was another fantastic success with

Ms. Shortt, Ms. Tasca, and Ms. Killam receiving awards of distinction for their

hard work and dedication to student success. This year, classroom teachers

showcased STEM activities during our Open House on April 24th. In addition to

the Open House, students also enjoyed an afternoon of Electives where they

attended an activity of their choice.

Also, during Education Week all primary students had a visit from Brooke

Kerrigan, a book author. In the first few days of May we have also welcomed

proves to be just as fun filled as April was so please be sure to check out the

school calendar attached. Our Absence Reporting System will undergo some

critical changes on the 14th so please pay particular attention to that page.

With only 9 weeks remaining of this school year we are beginning to plan for

September. We will be holding class placement meetings this month. As I said

in the letter that was sent home May 4th, there are many variables considered

when selecting class placements including gender, academic achievement,

behaviour, special education needs and Teaching Assistant support. We strive

to create balanced class groupings that best meet the needs of each and every

student. All of our teachers are well educated and well trained, and they all

work very hard to provide a quality education, and a safe and nurturing

environment for your children.

As always, at the end of May we will be holding the Ministry required EQAO

testing in our Grade 3 classrooms. If this affects your family, please check the

dates carefully to ensure that your child is present during those days. For

everyone else, we will have a slightly altered lunch routine, but otherwise please

simply wish the Grade 3’s the best of success with this annual routine.

We hope you enjoy the wonderful weather coming our way this month, and

we look forward to seeing you on June 7th at our end of year BBQ.

As you know, the Peel District School Board implemented SafeArrival, an automated absence reporting system for all students in its elementary schools in September 2016. Recently, the service provider for our system was sold to a new company and so, beginning May 14, 2018, there will be

some slight changes on how you will report your child’s absence from school.

All families must set up a new SafeArrival account beginning May 1, 2018. The new system will be “live” as of Monday, May 14, 2018 so please ensure your new account has been created by then. Please note: the new SafeArrival system CANNOT be used before May 14 to report any school absences. You must use our current SafeArrival system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The phone number will remain the same, only the App and website will change.

Use one of the following methods to set-up your new SafeArrival account. Please ensure the number and email address that you are using to report your child’s absences are those that we have on file. SchoolMessenger app (free from Apple or Google Play)

1. Download the SchoolMessenger app 2. Tap Sign Up to create your account

Web and Mobile Web: go.schoolmessenger.com

1. Go to the above website 2. Click Sign Up to create your account

Interactive Toll-free Phone

1. Call the toll-free number: 1-855-209-6155 2. Listen to and follow the instructions to report an absence

As always, please report your child’s absences before the start of the school day. Late arrivals and/or early departures should be reported as soon as possible. If your child’s absence is not reported in advance, the automated notification system will contact you to inform you of the absence and will provide an opportunity to verify the absence. By reporting your child absent in advance on the SafeArrival toll-free number, website or SchoolMessenger mobile app, you will not receive a call.

May 1 – Parents begin to set-up new SchoolMessenger accounts May 11 – Last day to use current SafeArrival App or pdsb.schoolconnects.com May 14 – Use new SchoolMessenger App or go.schoolmesenger.com Phone number will remain the same.

Basket Raffle - coming soon!

Once again we will hold a basket raffle at the June BBQ. Money raised this year will go directly towards the creation of an outdoor classroom for Ellwood! The collection of items for this year’s event will begin soon. Tickets for the draws will be sold from June 4th to June 7th. Families can purchase tickets during the BBQ as well.

The draw for each basket will be done at 7pm on June 7th.

Good luck!

A Bus Safety Reminder to Parents and Guardians

If your child in Kindergarten or Grade One is not met by the usual parent or caregiver, the driver is required to return the child to school, or get clearance from their employer and the school, which takes time and delays the delivery of the rest of the bus. Please be aware that a note to the school, or a call to the bus company is required to change the pick-up person for bus students in Grades K and 1. Similarly, adults who are not on your school contact list should not pick up your children from school without written or verbal permission from you.

Please be mindful that the safety rules and policies put in place by the bus company are created for student well-being. The drivers are responsible for delivering students home safely and are bound by these policies.

Me to We Club

The Me to We Club at Ellwood Memorial is very excited to begin our campaign to support a global cause. We will be selling Rafikis (a beaded bracelet) and Mingas (a woven bracelet) in order to support the Opportunity Pillar in Haiti. In Swahili, the word for friend is rafiki. In Ecuador, a minga is a call to action—a community coming together for the greater good. These beautiful bracelets are all handmade by women honouring traditions and empowering them to earn a sustainable income. We will be selling Rafikis and Mingas to the Ellwood Memorial School community from May 7-11. We will be accepting cash payments only.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Caruk, Mrs. Bray or Mme Baldessara.

Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week

Peel schools honour police officers during

Police Appreciation

Week The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Appreciation Week from May 14 to 18, 2018. Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the tremendous job being done by police to protect schools, homes and communities. Police Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute to the work of police officers across Canada. During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security.

Children’s Mental Health Week

May 7 to 13

Ontario has designated the week of May 7th to 13th, 2018, as Children’s Mental Health Week. Children's Mental Health Week focuses on increasing awareness of the signs of child and youth mental health problems, decreasing stigma and understanding that help is available and treatment can work.

Using themes such as Eat, Sleep, Move, and Positive Relationships, students will participate in learning and activities that promote well-being throughout the week.

At the Peel District School Board, fostering student well-being and positive mental health is just as important as creating comprehensive academic programs. Within the Peel board our strength is in our diversity. Valuing diversity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools encourage students and staff to do. It is not something that we pause to teach—it is embedded in all we do and teach every day. Recognizing Children’s Mental Health Week is just one way for us to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, helping us achieve equity for all students and staff.

May 28- June 1st

is Bike to School Week

Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start: The right fit

children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard the helmet should fit—if it's too loose, it could fall off, if it's too tight, it's uncomfortable

Get noticed a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector older riders should have a light and/or reflectors

Follow the rules no riding on busy streets no riding at night stop for all STOP signs

Actions that cause injuries driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street running the stop sign turning without warning cycling in the dark following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second

cyclist doesn't

A new way to ‘Share the Smile’ In every Peel school and worksite, there are endless inspiring stories just waiting to be told. To help share the smile, the Peel board will launch a new website on April 30 to showcase these amazing #PeelFam stories, people and creations. Visit www.sharethesmile.ca to view some of the stories, people and creations we’ve featured so far. We encourage students, staff, parents and the community to share the stories happening in their school community. In the top right corner, you share by clicking ‘Share Your Story’.

Mental Health Minute Activity For Children’s Mental Health Week, let’s try a Mental Health Minute Activity. Grateful seeing - Look FIRST for what’s good and working for us in life. Ask your child to share one (or two) good things about their day. Make sure you share what’s good about your day too! “We’re going for a walk!” - Exercise relieves anxiety for up to several hours as it burns excess energy, loosens tense muscles and boosts mood. If your child can’t take a walk right now, have them run in place, bounce on a yoga ball, jump rope or stretch. Three hugs, three big breaths - Hug your child and take 3 deep belly breaths together. Share a smile and move on with your day. This is a quick way to pause, connect and be in the moment together. Experiment! - Together with your child you might: try a new recipe, write a poem, paint something, or play a new game. Creative expression and well-being are linked.

Ellwood will be celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day on Thursday May 17. This is a fantastic initiative to get students outside and learning about our natural environment. For more information you can visit https://outdoorclassroomday.com/
