It’s all about the Gig! Musicians understand how important it is to have something to work towards such as rehearsals and performances to maintain their motivation to play. Schools traditionally only need one or two bass players for stage or concert band, so what do you do with all of those other bass players? Give them all a gig in an Electric Bass Guitar Ensemble playing contemporary classics in a range of styles! Over the last 20 years we’ve developed our concept of the Electric Bass Guitar Ensemble based on 4 key principles: 1. It’s all about the gig 2. Play music with people, for people 3. Play all of the music on all of the bass 4. Let’s produce musicians not just bass players
The Electric Bass Guitar Ensemble Collection is a series of books spanning three levels of songs young bass players love to play. The collection is designed to provide performance repertoire to bring bassists together to play bass lines, harmonic parts and melodies as they discover classic and contemporary hits.
What Is An Electric Bass Guitar Ensemble? Our version of an Electric Bass Guitar Ensembles generally comprises 4 parts Melody, 2 accompanying parts and a bass line. These parts can be doubled to include up to 8 bassists (although we know of a school with 3 bassists on each part in a 12 bassist ensemble). Each part is written to be played on an electric bass guitar.
What Age Is Appropriate? After 20 years of working with bassists we believe 8 years of age is a great time to begin learning the bass guitar (but it’s never too late) and recommend Rockschool Debut Book. See below for advice on beginner instruments.

How to Use this Book Each book contains a score and individual parts for 4 songs written in standard notation on the bass staff. Feel free to photocopy parts for players and keep your book intact. We’ve chosen a mix of recent and classic songs. Ensemble directors and students can also make use of the fact files for each song for further study.
Notes to the Ensemble Director Understanding the Collection Levels
● Level 1 is designed for bassists who have been playing for around twelve months. Completing the Rockschool Debut Grade (or equivalent) would be ideal preparation for this level.
● Level 2 is designed for bassists who have been playing for two to three years. Completing Rockschool Grade One (or equivalent) would be ideal preparation for this level.
● Level 3 is designed for bassists who have been playing for four years. Completing Rockschool Grade Three (or equivalent) would be ideal preparation for this level.
General Remarks on Tone
Eight bass players playing at the same time that’s a lot of bottom end! To compensate, we suggest bassists choose their back pickup where possible and turn the tone control on passive instruments fully clockwise. The amplifier bass tone control or equaliser should be wound back to produce a sound richer in mid and high frequencies. Although this setting may sound unappealing when students play individually, it will produce clear and defined parts in the ensemble context. General Remarks on Technique
If possible, select a picking position that anchors the thumb on the back pickup. In conjunction with the tone setting advice listed above, this will help to produce a punchier, clearer tone that’s perfect for the ensemble. Equipment Requirements
Basses We suggest a short scale (30 inch) bass for students younger than 13 and the Greg Bennett Corsair CR13 has proven reliable year after year. Sound Reinforcement It’s an electric ensemble so you’ll need to amplify each instrument. You don’t need specialist equipment. Here are some suggestions from our preferred to least preferred: 1. Plug each bassist directly into a mixing desk connected to your PA 2. Plug each bassist into 1 or 2 Multiinput amps eg Roland KC550 3. Plug each bassist into a Jamhub 4. Plug each bassist into their own amplifier

Multi-Effects for Bass Players
Playing basslines, harmonic parts and melodies opens up a great opportunity to utilise single effects or multi effect units. Chorus on a chordal part, an envelope filter on a melody, even some distortion and wah can spice things up and make the parts come alive. Using a multi effect unit also places a tuner and volume pedal at the feet of the performer allowing them to take more control over tuning and dynamics. Positioning your players Setting up your ensemble should follow general principles for setting up any ensemble consider the placement of amplifiers, lines of sight and performers playing the same, similar or complementary parts grouped together. Assigning Parts (Differentiation)
Similar advice here as above we have often given more experienced players the melody, sometimes grouped stronger and weaker players on the same part, simplified parts on the fly and split chords between two performers. We also try to rotate rolls as much as possible over the course of a year to allow each member the opportunity to play different roles. Rehearsals
In an ideal world, the members of your ensemble will be learning their parts in a regularly scheduled individual lesson with a specialist electric bass guitar teacher. Ensemble rehearsals run best when students have prepared their part for the rehearsal in advance. In this scenario, initial rehearsals of a new song would focus on a section at a time. The songs generally have 3 or 4 sections so it might take a month or so to make it from beginning to end. Accompanists
The arrangements in this book work with or without drum accompaniment. We suggest, at least, using a metronome during rehearsals. We’ve had great fun using a regular student drummer in rehearsals and performances, bringing in pro drummers and we love the drummer feature in GarageBand on iPhones/iPads.
Arranging the Songs
This is Rock and Roll. We’ve provided notation for reference for ensemble directors, tutors and performers but there’s no requirement for students to read music. Similarly, these are not necessarily set arrangements of the form. We encourage you to work together as a band to create your own arrangements of the song allowing for solos, extended intros, vamps, shout choruses etc. Solos and Improvisation
Most songs in the collection are great for improvisation in parts as well as solos. We encourage you to work with students to improvise and solo as often as possible.
