ABSTRACT
Most of people are agree that bilingual language should be used in
mastering English, in this modern era the students should master English well, by
using bilingual language they will easy to learn English. The aims of this study to
investigate the perception of students toward the use of two languages (English –
Indonesia) by the lecturer in an English classroom and to find out the benefits for
the students in learning English. The study used a descriptive design. The
participant of the study was 40 students on 4th semester, academic year 2021, 40
students completed the questionnaire and 3 students were selected to be the
respondents.
The findings show that generally the students have positive perception on
the use of bilingual language by the teacher in an English classroom. The
interviewees state that the use of bilingual language was helpful for the students in
the class, they thought that they can express something easily without any
pressure, also it helps them translating vocabulary and grammatical error. The
benefits were: helping them to catch up the material easily, making them easy to
understand new vocabulary in English, making them to feel comfortable with the
class atmosphere, helping them to manage the time in learning English, making
them to be more willing to express something, helping them easy to solve the
problem and helping them to increase their ability in writing, reading, listening
and speaking. Based on the findings, Students and teachers are given advice about
how to be more communicative so that they can discuss whether or not the
students are confused by the teachers' language.Finally, it is also suggested for the
future researchers to employ the sample from higher level of students.
