e Dear Neighbours,
WOW! 2015 is really on a roll already and I can’t believe I’m on the verge of going to print with this issue. As I’m writing this there is white stuff falling outside the window making it all look rather picturesque in the garden although I hope we don’t get too much of it.
I took Mr B-L out for an evening of entertainment recently to the WI Hall (it all happens there!) and we were thoroughly entertained by The Forge Singers performing their annual Panto - this year ‘The Wizard of Oz’. I’ve never been into Pantos until I first saw the Forge Singers and I’ve been going to their performances for the last few years. It was great fun, the costumes and set were magnificent and I couldn’t help myself but sing along to all the classic songs I had almost forgotten about.
I’m also having great fun co-hosting the Women In Business Radio Show with another Kent-based business woman Sian Murphy. The show is broadcast weekly from a studio in Southern Kent. One of our recent guests was another Edenbridge resident and business woman, Claire Hearn (also known as Mrs Tea) who runs ‘Pop up’ vintage tea rooms - www.mrs-tea.com. Her business is fantastic and unique and she keeps going from strength to strength with it.
This issue is brimming with content, features and a huge amount of services you can find operating in and around the local area. I must take this opportunity to thank all of you who have recommended this magazine to businesses you have come across. I don’t have a sales team, it is just me, and without the advertising this magazine wouldn’t exist.
Of course one of my main aims with this publication is to support the community and many pages are specifically allocated for this purpose: Events Listings, Clubs & Organisations Pages, Community Features, Community Page - and of course these are FREE for local groups and organisations to use in

e order that they can promote themselves to the local community. It’s easy to get something in, just email me at [email protected] and I always do my best to include as much as possible.
I’ve been doing some work on the website recently (www.edenbridgedirectory.co.uk) and you can find links to past issues, useful numbers and a host of other information. It also works on mobile devices and is a great reference tool if you don’t have your copy of the magazine to hand. I also list the events taking place on the facebook page so you can get reminders of what is happening in the area by liking the page.
In this issue you have a chance to win 2 tickets to Lingfield Park Racecourse - a fun outing as I’ve done it a few times myself. I’ve chosen a non-cryptic crossword as I know not everyone has the mind
to complete the cryptic variety - myself included!
I hope you enjoy this issue and please, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future.
Until next time...

re appearances - Transforming the way we look Pt 4As you will recall from previous issues of the magazine, I’ve been covering in detail what it’s like to undergo the various treatments on offer by Gillian Huntley at appearances. As I always say, the best way to be able to write about things is to actually experience them so that is what I have been doing in order to give you a real insight into what it’s like to be in Gillian’s hands.
Gillian is an experienced Aesthetic Therapist (I wouldn’t let just anyone
carry out these procedures on me) who has been working in the industry for over 25 years, specialising in Advanced Aesthetics for more than 15 of those. She doesn’t just come highly recommended by her clients but also works closely with Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons, nurses, technicians and consultants as well as many salons and clinics in Kent and the South East, including Essex.
She can often be found at Options Beauty Salon on the high street where she will see some of her local clients or alternatively she has her own home clinic in Chislehurst which is where I have been visiting for the purpose of writing these features.
Gillian is quite a miracle worker and she can do a lot for her clients to transform their lives and boost their confidence: skin peels, scar relaxation, specialist waxing, thread vein/pigmentation/skin tag removals, semi-permanent make-up and medical tattooing.
So far to date I have received the following treatments: semi-permanent eye-liner, mole removal, millia removal and skin tag removal and these have all been from my face. What more could I possibly have done? Well, this time I will be focusing on scar removal as over the years I have developed small scars as a result of not leaving my spots alone and more
recently a few of these have become really pitted making me feeling rather conscious about them. Can Gillian really make these disappear? While she was examining my scars she also told me she can also iron out the heavier wrinkles that were starting to appear across my forehead...
I was delighted that Gillian would be applying her miracle working numbing
cream to the areas to be treated, so the first part of the process was allowing this cream to take effect. As with all treatments, Gillian will go over the process in detail with her clients so there are no surprises when she is using her ‘probe’ to treat the areas required. Each probe used in treatments is brand new and you get to see the sterile packaging it comes in.
The process for this treatment is “Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation” which encourages the body’s own cells to regenerate resulting in wrinkles looking smoother and pitted scars effectively filling in and looking flatter. The same process can also be used for treating stretch-
marks. This involved “Dry Needling” with a saline solution on the affected areas to abrade the skin. The probe tears and scratches the skin to encourage rejuvenation.
A similar process is used for relaxing scars - “Mesotherapy” – a non-surgical cosmetic treatment involving multiple injections into the skin which breaks down elastin and collagen to encourage regeneration of the skin. Scars which are tight and restrictive are so because the skin has become knotted and doubled over inside.

The Edenbridge Directory March/April 2015
Some of the clients Gillian has treated over the years have had scarring following a hysterectomy or lymph nodes removed, both resulting in tight scars which have restricted their movement.
So, what does the treatment feel like? I will admit that I didn’t feel a thing this time, the
numbing cream really works a treat so there is nothing to worry about. It was only until I took some pictures half way through the treatment that I could see the trauma caused to my skin. It has to go through this process in order for it to heal effectively. I will admit that in the picture it does look harsh and you certainly wouldn’t want to be going out the same day or even a couple of days afterwards as it takes this long for the skin to start healing.
Throughout the procedure Gillian completely put me at ease with her friendly and chatty personality, talking through all the things she was doing to me so I didn’t have a thing to worry about.
At the end of the session Gillian applied the repair cream and
took me through the aftercare instructions which are very straightforward to follow. Every
client leaves with a goodie bag of anti-bacterial hand gel, vitamin A + D cream to help with the healing process, witch hazel gel and anything else that your particular treatment requires.
You can see why the aftercare is so important as the trauma my skin underwent is highly visible in the next set of pictures. I didn’t leave the house for a couple of days but now I’m delighted with how much better my skin is looking, my skin certainly appearing less pitted.
Prices for the scar treatments start at £125 and between 3-5 sessions may be required depending on the individual scars.
To find out more about this or any of the other treatments you have read about in the directory, you can contact Gillian on 07711 067 789 or email her at [email protected]. You can also find more information:

The friendly, local club for everyone in the heart of Edenbridge High Street.
The Edenbridge Club has a well deserved makeover With it’s history dating back to the early 1900s, indeed like some of it’s previous décor, The Edenbridge Club (previously known as the Edenbridge Mens’ Club) has undergone some much needed refurbishment and now enters a new era, providing modern facilities and FREE WiFi for it’s members.Following extensive stripping and plastering in the downstairs bar area, the club has a whole new feel when you walk through the door. GOODBYE old drab walls and HELLO to new, bright, open plan space. With membership currently just under 350, the popularity of the club is slowly building again as workers and residents in the area realise the value the club gives them.“We deliver what our members want as much as possible, and within reason of course”, says Club Treasurer David Putman, “there wouldn’t be a club without
the support of our members.”If you haven’t been to the club for a while or are new to the area, you’ll be most welcome to take a look around and be pleasantly surprised at the facilities on offer here. The club are also able to obtain a late bar licence - great when big sporting events are showing on the big screen outside of normal opening hours.“We’re the only club in town with Big Gaming Machines which pay £250 and £500 jackpots,” says Club Secretary Derek Smith, “and our beer is the finest in town so our members tell us!”Membership to the club is only £15 per year / £8 for Senior Citizens.THE CLUB LOOKS FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU SOON!

ture Home Farm Trust - plenty on offer here
The small village located off Hever Road on Phillippines Close (Edenbridge TN8 5GN) has had a few names over the years - CARE, Self Unlimited - and is now run by hft (Home Farm Trust) North Kent. I met with Hospitality Manager Phillip Diggens and Operations & Events Manager Mel Gibson to find out about this great place that has so much going on.
The main purpose of hft is to support people with learning disabilities and here they are able to learn many skills to help them into employment. There are many on site facilities to help them achieve this.
The Oak Tree BistroOpen from 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, you’ll find a wide range of food available - cooked breakfasts, lunches, tea, coffee, ice cream – and you will be amazed at the prices too. This is a real hidden gem and a perfect venue to meet up with friends for a catch up. Oh, and of course there are the cakes… Pastry Chef Emma really is a real talent and as well as making cakes to supply to a number of local outlets they can also be made to order for special occasions. If you want a Thomas the Tank Engine, a flame throwing dragon or almost anything else you can think of, she is the lady to see. With Easter around the corner you might want to order an Easter cake or Hot Cross Buns.
Stay Green Bed & BreakfastThe B&B is a fairly new feature in the grounds of hft, providing very eco-friendly accommodation - with a wind turbine, solar panels, and much more. At the beginning of the year it was voted 8th in the “Late Rooms Awards” in the Hostel category and you can read excellent customer reviews online on the Trip Advisor website. The B&B is open to individuals, groups, families and anyone looking for affordable accommodation in the area, at extremely reasonable rates. There is also WiFi throughout the building and disabled access.
Leaflet DistributionI hadn’t realised until my visit that this service was available from here and I’m sure that now you all know about it, it will become very popular indeed, particularly with the local business community. Contact Andrew Pocock on 01732 782 714 to find out more.
Hall HireThe halls are already used by a number of groups and organisations in and around the area. The local Rotary Club have a meeting with a 3 course meal every Monday evening in the large hall and the smaller hall is used for exercise classes and other activities. Prices start from £10 per hour for the small hall and £15 per hour for the large hall.
Knit and NatterEvery second Monday there is a free meeting of knitting enthusiasts who knit goods to be sold to raise money for hft. Beginners as well as advanced knitters are welcome to the group and they are always looking for wool donations.

Edenbridge & District Twinning AssociationDid you know, or realise, that as a resident of Edenbridge or one of the neighbouring villages you are already a member of the Twinning Association?
What is it? The Twinning Association is an agency of the Edenbridge Town Council and was formed in 1973 ‘to promote friendship and understanding’ between the people of Edenbridge and its surrounding villages and the people of Mont Saint Aignan, near Rouen in Normandy, France.
What does it do? It arranges exchange visits between the two towns two or three times a year, sometimes for 2 days other times 3 days long, sometimes small groups some larger, sometimes by coach other times by shared transport, sometimes themed as in the Walking or Historical Weekends or just of general interest.
During exchange visits to France we always stay with French families, but join together for the outings and it does not matter if you do not speak French!
The Association also encourages and assists local organisations to make their own exchange visits and even create their own links. Examples include the Forge Singers, the Town Band, the Rugby Club and the Scouts.
Together with the French organising committee we also try to arrange exchanges for individuals who wish to find work experience in France.
Who does it? Anyone who wants to get involved! There are no barriers - families with young children or individuals of any age. It is open to anyone who lives in the area, with occasional friends or relatives from further afield.
Remember there are no subscriptions and everyone is welcome!
Newsletters and information on these and extra events are sent out over the year and if you would like to receive these and find out more, just email: [email protected] or phone 01342 850 249.
Edenbridge & District Astronomers“The Edenbridge and District Astronomers was formed in 2010 as a non-profit making organisation. We have bi-monthly meetings at various venues, and monthly viewing evenings (subject to weather conditions!). We have various activities during the year including talks, and dark sky weekends away.
The group has it’s own telescope that can be hired by members for a nominal fee. Stargazing live 2015 is the third stargazing event that we have held and is always a very popular event with the group and public alike. We are only a small group (approximately 20 members) with all levels of experience. Our members come from Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Membership is only £30 for a joint/family membership and £20 for a single membership (membership year runs Nov-Oct).
The group has it’s own Facebook page which details the latest news and events and we welcome anyone who would like to come and join us to get in touch.”

e Eden Valley Museum 2015 season A new Fossils and Prehistoric Archaeology display dates from when dinosaurs roamed the area and before the North Downs were even formed. It features a hand axe made by Neanderthal man 240,000 years ago along with a range of artefacts from a local rock shelter which was in use from the end of the Ice Age, and evidence of Romans in the Valley.
The Silks and other World War One Post Cards display has been updated with previously unseen Song Cards, sentimental cards exchanged between servicemen and their wives or sweethearts during WW1, along with a collection of scenic post cards sent home from France by Wilfred Allen who lived in The Square in Edenbridge. Runs until June 2015.
The ‘Til the boys come home WW1 Exhibition, which explores the impact of the Great War on the lives of people in the Eden Valley, continues throughout 2015.
A new Map of the Month display has been introduced for 2015. Each month there will be a new map related to some piece of local history that you can come and explore. The first map
is of Edenbridge, dating from somewhere between 1853 and 1878 and serves to show how much the town has grown since then. In March a ‘Map of Westerham and Eatonbridge Hundred’ will be on display. If you want to find out more about the maps and the time they come from then be sure to check back every month and follow us on twitter @EdenMuseumKent.
Finally, a new display of Household Implements and Devices from days gone by is now in place, with some teasing questions posed for visitors as to what some of the implements were actually used for.
Open Wednesday and Friday from 2 to 4.30pm and Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm.

Pottery talent nurtured by local teacher/artistThis ceramic dragon, by Year 10 student Rene Yalcinkaya, has been a labour of love that he has worked on during his pottery lessons and also in an after school pottery club organised by his teacher and local Edenbridge resident/
artist Jo Wooltorton. Rene attends Moor House School & College, a specialist school in Surrey for young people with speech and language difficulties. Rene particularly enjoys the creativity that 3D Design offers him as it allows him to fully express his ideas without having to be too concerned with traditional academic constraints such as full stops, paragraphs and capital letters! This talented young potter is developing his skills and already has plans for his next project, which will be an massive lidded urn decorated with...another dragon!

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costsWe are in February already, where did January go? I wonder how many readers managed to keep to their New Year Resolutions? The goals I set for myself were twofold; complete Dry January (no alcohol) and lose a stone in weight. Thankfully I succeeded in both, the latter much to do with the former I would have thought! So no pint of beer for me during the interval when I went to watch The Forge Singers performing a really splendid adaption of The Wizard of Oz at the WI Hall. Congratulations to all involved.
Rather than concentrate on my usual areas of divorce and matrimonial finance and contact and residence of children, I thought I would focus this edition on motoring offences, which is one of those subjects that affects many drivers
but isn’t spoken about much. If, like me, you’ve been caught out by speed cameras for exceeding the limit by just a small amount, whilst we want to kick ourselves for our
mistake, the punishment is fairly moderate.
However, for some motoring offences the punishment can be severe, which is why getting expert legal advice and representation at an early stage is crucial. This is where I can help. For the benefit of readers not familiar with my column, I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. I am a freelance Barristers’ Clerk and facilitator bringing down the cost of legal advice and representation by cutting solicitors out of the supply chain and arranging for people to go direct to the highly expert and cost-effective services of Barristers.
Whether you have been charged with an alcohol related offence, failure to provide a specimen, speeding, careless or dangerous driving, or any other motoring offence, I can arrange for
you to be advised and/or represented in court by a Barrister. Specialist legal advice and skilled representation could mean the difference between losing or keeping your license or significantly reducing the period of disqualification itself. If the charge is really serious, you
could end up in prison. Give yourself the best chance – get advice from a Barrister… contact me.
Barristers are specialist legal advisers and court room advocates. They are self-employed independent lawyers, trained to advise clients’ on the strengths and weaknesses of their case. You may not think you have a defence but consideration of all the facts by a Barrister who specialises in this area of law may lead him to the conclusion that you have a genuine defence. A well-argued case and good cross-examination can make a huge difference to the final outcome. Surprising as it may sound, Barristers cost less overall than solicitors. You are paying for the Barrister’s time and expertise not the cost of running a solicitor’s office.
Let’s face it, if you were in court accused of an offence and your livelihood was at stake, who would you rather have in your corner, a solicitor, or a Barrister skilled in the art of advocacy and making persuasive legal arguments?
Many solicitors charge by the hour which can soon add up. I work only with senior Barristers and the motoring work is charged entirely on a “fixed fee” basis. So whether you require advice on the merits of your defence or representation in court, you will know in advance what the fee will be.
Contact me in confidence on 01732 866 562.
Remember, speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands!

ture The BRIDGES Centre celebrates 20 years in town!
On 18th April 1995, The BRIDGES Centre first opened it’s doors to the community of Edenbridge, three years after the charity was formed. It relies on it’s team of dedicated volunteers to run the café and organise fund raising activities as well as receiving money from private donors and community grants.
It has come a long way since it first opened, undergoing two makeovers to upgrade the facilities and create more space for customers. It is not in the business of competing with the other coffee shops but about provision of services and offering resources which, for one reason or another, are not being met elsewhere.
There are many regular activities taking place here on a weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis from advice/support sessions to music and crafts. There is full disabled access and a children’s play area to keep the little ones occupied while you enjoy a tea and chat with friends.
However, in order to ensure that this remains a bustling hub on the High Street, the centre is asking for your input as to what you would like to see and how the service can be improved, after all it was created with the aim to support and provide facilities for the local community.
The BRIDGES Centre Pop-in CaféOpen 6 days a week, the cafe serves tea, coffee, cappuccino’s as well as delicious snacks and light lunches. All the food is freshly prepared
and homemade and the café also has a Hygiene Rating of 5 awarded by Sevenoaks District Council. There is also free WiFi available.
Café Opening hours:Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday
9.30am to 2.00pmWednesday & Saturday
9.30am to 12noon
A Space for HireAble to hold up to 50 people comfortably, the centre makes the ideal venue for all sorts of occasions - a meeting place for local groups and organisations, parties and gatherings and much more. You can hire the centre outside of “Pop-in” hours, just call the Centre Manager Mary Perrett on 01732 868 186 or by emailing [email protected]
BRIDGES on facebookIn order to connect to the younger members of the local community, BRIDGES now has a presence on social media site facebook. You can keep up to date with the numerous activities taking place as well as any organised fund raising events that are running by liking the page at www.facebook.com/TheBridgesCentre.
So, if you’ve not been to the centre at all or for ages, go along and check it out. The team of friendly staff look forward to welcoming you.
