Eastcote Hockey amp Badminton Club Policy For Wearing Face Masks When Defending Penalty Corners Introduction Earlier in the season the club published a Policy on the use of facemasks when defending Penalty Corners based on guidelines supplied by England Hockey who strongly recommend that they be worn Subsequent to this the Management Committee have had detailed discussions about the implementation of the Policy with particular reference to the position of Junior members As a result of these discussions the Policy has been refined and updated and the revised Policy is set out below Revised Policy

VERY IMPORTANT GUIDANCE ON USE OF FACEMASKS FOR JUNIOR AND ADULT PLAYERS This guidance note relates to the use of facemasks during hockey play and their availability to players It is important that all members (and in the case of juniors their parents or guardians) read this note and where necessary take steps to comply with the guidance You will be aware that it has become common place that in a defensive penalty corner the defenders will typically wear a facemask for protection Eastcote Hockey Club (EHC) would like to make clear to all players and (in the case of juniors) their parents or guardians the following guidance on facemasks

It is the personal responsibility of all players (and in the case of juniors ie players under 18 years of age their parents or guardians) to provide their own protection equipment for playing the game of hockey and EHC wishes to make members aware of its guidance in relation to the use of facemasks In line with the recommendation of England Hockey that facemasks are worn at penalty corners to help prevent serious injury EHC strongly advises junior and adult defenders to use facemasks in game and in training situations Adult players are permitted to make an informed personal decision whether to follow EH guidelines and wear a face mask or not If they decide not to wear a face mask EHC shall have no responsibility for their safety at penalty corners EHC does not provide facemasks for adult players No junior player will be allowed to defend a penalty corner in any game for EHC or in any practice organised by EHC unless wearing a face mask At EHC the Club currently provides some masks to juniors but we cannot guarantee they are available for all games and the responsibility for providing and using them remains with the player andor their parents or guardians We therefore recommend that if any junior player is likely to be involved in defending penalty corners during a match or training they or their parent or guardian purchases a facemask since the junior will not be permitted to defend a penalty corner if no face mask is available

Commentary Historically the only person allowed to wear a face mask was the Goal Keeper however as the game has developed and player ability to hit and flick the ball more powerfully has increased the FIH has now allowed the use of approved facemasks to be worn by the defenders positioned on the goal line at penalty corners They are allowed to wear the mask until the penalty corner play has broken down at which stage they must discard their masks which are not allowed to be worn in subsequent open play England Hockey has issued guidelines that strongly recommend that facemasks are worn for defending penalty corners The Club also strongly advises junior and adult defenders to use facemasks in game and in

training situations The Club must stress that the responsibility for providing face masks is entirely that of the individual in the case of adults and that of the parent or guardian in the case of juniors (ie players under 18 years of age) The Management Committee is happy that adult players can make an informed decision whether they want to use a face mask (and if they choose not to wear a mask the Club can have no responsibility for their safety at penalty corners) However for juniors ie players under 18 the Committee considers that it is necessary to have strict guidelines in view of the age of the player and the fact that a parent may not be present at a training session or match The Committee has therefore decided that no junior in either practice or matches will be allowed to defend a PC unless they are wearing a facemask Some facemasks may be available for Juniors to use in junior coaching and junior matches and but the Club cannot guarantee that availability If a junior does not have a face mask and no spare face mask is available the junior will not be permitted to defend a PC The club does not have any facemasks for juniors playing in adult games so unless the junior has their own mask they will not be allowed to defend a penalty corner in an adult game Please note that the possible availability of some facemasks provided by the Club does not in any way affect the responsibility of the parent or guardian of juniors for providing a face mask In exceptional circumstances it is possible that no defenders will have facemasks and the goal will be undefended leading to a goal being conceded the committee feel that safety of juniors is of paramount importance over any game result The Management Committee 31

Male Players Urinating At The Side Of The Pitch

England Hockey have issued a communication regarding male players urinating at the side of the hockey pitch This is nevertheless from both a decency and safeguarding perspective Until now umpires will have faced it but as it frequently happens before or following the game will probably have been non-plussed as to what to do about it England Hockey have been unequivical in their message that it is contrary to EH Respect - Code of Ethics and Behaviour and as such should be reported as a Disrepute Offence to England Hockey

Please note this is very important as any breach will now result in the Club and player facing disciplinary action if itrsquos breached Rob Riddleston

Chair Chat in absentia Our illustrious Chairman Lord Gandalf of Riddleston and our equally illustrious Deputy Chairman Bilbo Pile-Baggins have recently journeyed to New Zealand I suspect secretly for a remake of The Hobbit By coincidence they just missed Neets who has also been in New Zealand allegedly laying out the PR carpet for our boysrsquo new venture So it falls to me to keep you up to date In a packed program last Saturday the Past Masters were the only team in action against Hampstead amp Westminster in the Higgins London League In a highly charged post-Christmas match the PMrsquos stormed to a 0-0 draw and as a result are in hot contention for the Team of the Week award A recount is in progress - I will keep you posted It has been noted that since Lord Gandalf and Bilbo Pile-Baggins have left the country only one hockey match has been played and even more worrying bar-takings have fallen by 96 Bilbo will be back next week but I really think we need Gandalfrsquos fine right arm to steady the ship As proposed at the last AGM we have now succeeded in meeting with Sport England whose Planning Manager came to see us just before Christmas together with Simon Dowdy our Facility Relationship Manager at England Hockey They spent two or three hours with us and went away with a very positive view of Eastcote Hockey Club resolving to help us through the maze of regulations and administration The key organisation for them (SE) seems to be The Football Foundation who I recall were most helpful last time around Cautiously Optimistic Strict instructions from Ed not to mention SN so I will just say West Ham Man City Also I am not to mention SS so no bonus point then Back into action this week some league matches some friendlies lots of umpires and back to (probably) the best hockey teas in world Do have an enjoyable 2019 ndash remember that we do this for FUN El Presidente

TOO MUCH TURKEY AND FESTIVITIES This match was played between Christmas and New Year and it looked like a bit of panto in parts we had a lucky 13 fit players and dominated a Hampstead and Westminster side so thoroughly that the Opta stats machine thought that this game was all the Chinese could find to bet on Possession PMs 71 HampW 29

The line-up started as usual with Dave in goal Vijay on the M25 for the opening 15 mins and the back 4 comprising Pali Ian Gavin and Harry with a dynamic midfield of Sadar Tim Graham and Sukhi and augmented by 2 of ldquoLrdquo Lloydy and Addy up front The opening quarter saw the PMs perfect the escape from the middle Graham Sukhi or Sadar would win the ball and feed it to Tim to execute the early short 5m pass into the feet of ldquoLrdquo just outside their 25 Having done this 3 times in a row we then had to work out what to do next The home side meanwhile relied on a long ball game to their wide men most frequently their left winger who was to keep Pali busy all afternoon thus not allowing him to raid down the wing So lots of possession but we were lying too deep and playing too narrow When we did get it out wide our wingers were invariably double teamed and thus having been robbed on numerous occasions resorted to the long hard ball into or through the D In a normal game yoursquod reckon on a foot from a random selection of 1 out of 10 but not today At the other end the defence swept up a couple of breakaways defended a short which resulted in a referee timeout ndash still no idea what that was about Half time came and went and we tried a longer game shuffled a few players around but the result and pattern of play stayed the same Right at the death Dave had to pull of the save of the match having seen the ball presented to a home forward inside the D Best moment of the game was when Gavin heard the call ldquoslip under your armrdquo a quick glance and a lovely ball went to the umpire who was by now one of the PMs thus gifting the Ham amp West winger a free run into the D fortunately mopped up by a combination of Dave and Ian Most talking of the game came from Pali who spent most of the game discussing how many teams hersquod seen their winger playing for

Turkey moment of the game was when Tim was tripped from behind and in full flow landed on his turkey or some such and had to go off to recuperate The bar was canvassed for MotM and there were only 2 candidates nominated this week and by a clear majority it goes to Ian well at least he was ldquoMotrdquo as he umpired the 4

th quarter in which the dominant memory is the vocals

from the right defence position so the final ldquoMrdquo goes to Pali
