Chair Chat Saturday saw the 1

st teams suffer disappointing results –

the Ladies letting a point slip away with 2 late goals and the men suffering from not scoring and conceding what many saw as a debateable stroke. The most important game however is this week so come on lets get 6 points this weekend guys and girls. In the men’s section all teams won apart from the Eagles with lots of good results including 2 for the 3rds in a doubleheader ,the 4ths with West Hampstead the 5ths at Ashford , the 6ths against high flying Maidenhead and the 2 Vets teams also winning . The ladies saw another 10.30 game frosted off and the 4ths consolidating their league leaders spot. My team of the week goes to the Men’s 2nds for a 5-1 win against league leaders Bracknell. 30 of us attended the Indoor finals on Sunday and we saw some high octane hockey with the men’s final being the highlight as Canterbury came back from 6-3 down with 2 goals and had a chance in the last few seconds to grab a draw but EGs held onto win. The weather is a funny thing – we Brits love talking about it but there is nothing we can do of course to alter it. The 10.30 slots are being hit with some Friday night frosts and for the nervous of you don’t look at Friday night/Saturday mornings forecast. My umpiring focus during the week was on Cricket where I attended a Hertfordshire meeting where David Kendix spoke – he is an England scorer and on the ICC paying regulation committee so talk was about DRS, Duckworth/Lewis and over rates – thrilling stuff for the cricket nerd. Finally can I say a big thanks to my Management Committee team who meet every 6 weeks for 2 hours+ to help make sure the Club runs as smoothly as we can.

Monday was our latest meeting with 9 of us attending. We discuss matters affecting the Men’s, Ladies & Colts sections, the Clubhouse and Astro pitch, Finances, Social events and strategic goals for the club. Attending as well as myself is Club President Chris Clark , Deputy Chair Graham Pile , Club Secretary Ian Fitzgerald , Treasurer Jamie Nichols , our 3 Section captains Coops, Lenny & Jackie , marketing manager Wicksy and our legal counsel Richard Mattick. Director of Coaching Chunky is also on the Committee. When you see one of these people please make sure you say a big thanks to them for the work they do. Anyway back to the weather – its cold.

Match Reports Ladies 1’s v Marlow 1’s Saturday 24th January Lost 1 - 3

Second Half Blues Twas the first league game after Christmas and with almost our full squad available we were quite excited and ready for 3 points, Coach Alfie even added a 'spurt' of encouragement. We were sure that with our special supporters in the form of the newlywed Brown bear, Mumma Brown and Bell there would be hatricks left right and centre. After our game being prematurely called off due to snow the previous week and training being more reminiscent of a cheap version of Disney on ice, with added swear words, we were feeling a bit rusty for the first 10 minutes of the half. The defence dealt with a few successive slick short corner routines towards the end of the first half with Lil pulling off some brilliant saves. We pulled it together for the last 10 minutes of the half and started playing some nice hockey with some lovely link up play from the two Lens, Whippet, Hels and Missy in midfield. 0-0 at half time and we were still confident we could pull a good performance and 3 points out of the bag.

Second half, and the details are a little hazy, they scored, then we scored a fantastic short, Mac found Whip on the post who slotted it in perfectly. Then they scored 2 more with 5 mins to go. Mom was a closely fought battle between a few with Whipster and Josie ending up on top.

Dod was less of an eagerly awaited result unbeknownst to my Dod companion and I, apart from our votes (well vote, even Hels voted for our fabulous moment of telepathy) the entire team had voted for us for a move, which had it have worked would have sliced the Marlow defence in half and led to a cracking goal.... Sadly it did not work out quite like that and subsequently led to an attack on our own goal. To add delight to this event only moments before Hels had whispered in my ear she was no longer going to try anything clever. Alas, we ended up on match report duty.

Bring on Brighton on Sat, for a much needed win and even more importantly a nice bottle of bubbly.

Ladies 1st team bake off starts next week with Becca up against Lil, Hurrah. Bring on the cake. Good luck all. Tank & JSP=

Men’s 1’s v Oxford Hawks 2’s Saturday 24th January Lost 0 – 1

No Second Blue Eastcote had several chances they could just not put away in this top of table clash. They displayed some of the great attacking play of recent weeks but could just not convert. Best chances going to Kevin Haigh. The Hawks

goal was a controversially awarded Penalty Stroke that keeper Mark Welch almost saved. This result leaves them in third place as Hawks widen the gap at the top. Very frustrating afternoon for the boars who take on Wycombe at home on Saturday

Past Masters v Wimbledon Vintage Masters Saturday 24th January Won 3(2) – 2(1)

. . .Yet another hard match Wimbledon travelled up to the Eastro with a strong youthful team to challenge us near the top of the league. The PM’s were without a couple of their own younger mid-fielders to further exacerbate the challenge. “Our normally solid left-hand defensive unit was being out numbered and outrun by a very combatitive Dulwich team that was moving the ball well and at pace through our ranks.” This was the opening statement from last week and just by substituting Wimbledon for Dulwich the statement is true again this week. We kept the tide at bay for 15 mins but not without needing timely interceptions by Dave and Gavin at the back. But like last week we gave up the 1

st goal when

their centre forward was found clear at the top of the D without a marker and clinically dispatched the chance to open the scoring. Our forward game was being thwarted by some robust tackling and a certain lack of concentration, but eventually Lloydy, Buddy and Max all started to get behind their defence ably fed by the ever present, centrally positioned, Dogra. A move involving all of them resulted in Lloydy opening the scoring from the left. So 20 minutes in and we were back on even keel but the midfield of Vijay, Pali, Pali and Sukhi were having to work really hard to just stay in the game and hence Richmond had chances themselves and Dave , Sudesh and Gavin all had to be on the ball to thwart chances close in. With Richmond having more possession the going was tough but in Lloydy and Max we had the legs on the Richmond team at the back and when Lloydy cut in from the left, he lifted his head and saw Max in space near the top of the D, his pass (yes, Lloydy passed it) was perfect and Max found the corner with unerring accuracy to give us a lead to take into the break. We started the 2

nd half with the same line-up but

introduced some more legs to the mid-field after 10 mins. This had an immediate effect and reduce the pressure on the rest of the team. After another 5 mins Pali fed the ball to Buddy, who found Dogra, then onto Lloydy deep in the D to the left of the goal. The keeper was in a bit of a dilemma to come or not, in the end he charged but Lloydy eluded him and also the defender on the line to score, giving us a 2 goal cushion. So the game was now relatively safe, but never absolutely. It ebb and flowed for the rest of the half with chances at both ends and with 5 mins to go a defensive error gave Richmond a clear overload in our D and they duly pulled a goal back, much to the annoyance of all concerned.

The EastcoNet 4 31st January 2015

This gave Richmond some key encouragement and they pressed hard for the last 5 mins, Dave made a couple of good stops and Gavin made a superb interception and robbed a Wimbledon forward just as he was pulling the trigger with a clear sight of goal. However in the end the older PM team prevailed although another 5 mins would have been very interesting. Yet again ‘Man of the match’ award is not an easy choice for this game, they were great contributions from both Palis and Buddy but for his numerous tackles and clearances at key moments, especially right at the end, it goes to Gavin. “Màlmand”

Men’s 4’s v West Hampstead 6’s Saturday 24th January Won 3 - 0

What a difference a week makes! This return game was always going to be tough and physical. And it didn’t disappoint. After last week’s team performance, Eastcote had to up their game and improve their team cohesion and play as a unit. Our retired international Paul captained the side making tactical changes to the formation and positions. With the regular supporters in attendance this game lived up to its rivalry. You could feel the energy and drive in the air. Eastcote passing the ball with precision and pace. The full backs in Jas and Dave are calm and decisive. The midfield making the runs and creating spaces. Eastcote in total control, but still unable to break through the WH stern defence. With patience and determination the chances came with Paul missing the good chance with a hit going past the post. The goal finally came from a short corner won by Andrew on the left on one of his lightning runs as he ghosts past a challenge from a defender and is clumsily stick tackled. The tried and tested routine is used, a push out to Jas who shoots first time and is deflected off the keeper into goal. Eastcote continue to control the game with Ollie on the right linking up with Gurdeep and Monty. Sarosh in the defence midfield effortlessly distributing the ball around and looking much younger and fitter than his peers! A number of corners were won and Conor must have thought he had scored when a ball was hit to him at the post only for it to be deflected off his stick off the side line. Half time 1-0 The second half WH decided that they would not start to attack and try to catch Eastcote on the break. They ventured more into the Eastcote half but still failed to mount a decisive attack or really test Dan in goal. A second penalty corner and this time Jas decides to dribble past the oncoming defenders and struck the backboard, 2-0. Still no time for complacency as WH start to lose their discipline and their shape. Eastcote are now playing with composure and confidence. A penalty corner is won by Selwyn. Up steps Jas who moves the ball to his left for Monty to lift it over the keeper into the roof of the net, 3-0.

This was a confident and disciplined performance by Eastcote. No penalty corners won by the opposition and no cards were issued to any Eastcote players. Rob our beloved Chairman almost collapsed with shock at these statistics!

Ladies 3’s v West Hampstead 3’s

Saturday 24th January 2015 Lost 0 - 6

Body Checks We were all up for this match (apart from those with a cold or feeling car sick!) following last week’s postponement for frost, however when we started playing we were all out of sorts and looked like a team that hadn’t played together for over a month, and actually we hadn’t due to injuries, Christmas, unavailability etc. Our new goalie Allana made some great saves, diving all over the place but the opposition had some slick passing and a hot shot shooter and were soon 2 goals ahead. Delia and Laura returned from injury and were both straight in to the action with no fear. Charms was encouraging as always and the team settled down and had some good chances, but just before halftime Lucy took a whack on her bad knee and came off and we gave away another cheap goal! Following an inspiring half time team talk we started the second half well and had most of the possession, but just couldn’t get the ball past their goalie. They however seemed to know how to score on their pitch and slipped in another few goals, in between Allana’s shoulder dislocating out of its socket. Natalie was unusually quiet, vocally (apart from her leaf picking story) - so joint DoD went to CJ for forgetting one of her socks and Captain Lucy for falling over face first whilst trying to keep the ball on the pitch! Onwards and upwards, lets show West Hampstead 4

th

team this weekend what we are capable of!

Men’s 3's Double Header + Last Week Eastcote 3's v Oxford Hawks 4’s Saturday 17th January Lost 0 - 2

Poached

For the first game of the season, a captainless 3's travelled to Oxford Hawks and won 1-2. It was debatable as to whether we deserved the win but it was a tight game and points in the bag are what counts. When (top of the league) Hawks came to play (the once again captainless) Eastcote 3's they must have had revenge on their minds. However, the game did not start according to the Hawks plan.

Eastcote had nearly all the possession, we're playing some excellent hockey and we were generating a great deal of pressure. As CB I didn't really have a lot to do, so I had a very nice chat with one of the Hawks forwards who was extremely complimentary towards our style of play and he felt that we should already be 2 or 3 ahead already. He was right! All present were sure the pressure would pay off eventually giving us another well earned win.

The EastcoNet 5 31st January 2015

To summarise the 70 minutes, this is how the whole game played out. Eastcote in possession, Eastcote on the attack, Eastcote by far the better side, Hawks desperately defending with 10 players behind the ball. Unfortunately, we could not put the ball in the net. It was not for lack of effort but despite the quality from Eastcote and lack of quality by Hawks, the final passes and shots were not coming. Hawks fortuitously scored from a couple of short corners, more by luck than judgement. The game finished 0-2, the Hawks forward apologised for the mugging but as mentioned 'points in the bag are what counts'! We are still second in the league but we have a very tough, season deciding double header next weekend against two very tough sides, Wokingham and Marlow. Win both and we are well on the way to completing our preseason target of promotion.

Men’s 3’s v Wokingham 2's Saturday 24th January1-0 win Won 1 - 0

Thug Hockey So with the 3's glorious run of 9 straight wins brought to an end by league leaders Hawks, the 3's looked to get back to building a new run. The team's only remaining "invincible" returned. The Captain had fond memories of playing away at Wokingham having achieved an incredible "Bradford like" comeback form 2-0 down to win 3-2 with a scratch 4's side to gain the first of 10 mins in 2012-13 season. With the 3's playing 2 games in 2 days the 3's were fortunate to have above average availability and were able to rotate, while the last minute addition of Kern was also helped. Wokingham had proved tough opponents at the Eastro with the 3's winning 3-2, so another tough game was expected. Setting off the 3's quickly found their feet and had the best of the early pressure. Soon the 3's managed to force a couple of shorts but the shots were as accurate as a fox news reports. The forwards were also similarly miss-firing and not for a couple of poor first touches the deadlock could have been broken. In the end it was the routine that broke Windsor, with Jimmy nipping in to slot the ball in from the short, giving him 3 goals in 3 games (still, how many in summer league?). With this the 3's piled on the pressure but were undone when Jeff miss hit the ball from the 16 straight to an opposition forward before being skinned leaving the forward 1 on 1 with Geoff. Geoff however was on it like the far right to islamaphobia and ploughed through clearing the ball. Good work on both flanks lead to more chances but the half ended 1-0. At half time Lewis focused on the recycling and just to make more simple passes (nothing new there). The 3's came out of the blocks and had Wokingham under more pressure than an A&E department and at times the D was just as crowded. Despite this the 3's just couldn't break though as they hit the post or it was cleared from the line. This in-turn possible made the 3's more nervous as they tried to get the 2nd goal cushion. Wokingham were mainly trying hit and hope tactics and generally the 3's defence stood firm to the best they could offer.

Jimmy was a constant threat, and having earlier expressed his dislike of the 'thug life' meme then brought thug hockey to the fore taking a player out and knocking him from the pitch. He didn't choose thug life.... Eventually the half drew to a close and the 3's won a short as the final whistle went. With 2 bites of the cherry, the 3's managed to hit the post but not get any closer, so it ended 1-0 to the 3's. A solid dominant performance, where much like Ed Miliband we just couldn't turn good opportunities into meaningful gains. However a win is a win and it was a great start to the weekend of hockey we had ahead. There were a number of good performances however it was Ross who stood out in the centre of defence and won man of the match. Dick of the day, Joe for losing his sat nav only to realise it was in his hand.

Men’s 3's vs Marlow 3's Sunday 25th January Won 2-1

The Hospira Derby While not quite as big as the Africa cup of nations match between Congo and the democratic republic of Congo (today, sat 31st Jan @ 16:00) this match was the big one for the workers at Hospira. The Quality Department and Eastcote 3's captain Lewis Watson taking on the Chemo Unit's and Marlow 3's free scoring playmaker Che Armstrong. Switched to a Sunday allowed a record attendance at the Eastro for all the fans (there was like 10!) the 2nd vs 3rd clash could have a big bearing on the race for promotion. Again the 3's welcomed back old faces from injury and others rested for the Marlow game. Again the 3's started strongly. Jimmy T and Joe linking up really well early on and it seemed Marlow had the bigger hangover from the day before. Marlow were limited to similar counter attacking hockey utilised by Wokingham the day before. As a result the Eastcote's turnover game was quicker than an on-line petition against Ched Evans. For the first 15 minutes the 3's dominated the play, and before long Marlow finally broke. A fast counter attack allowed Joe to round the keeper and slot home, only for a retreating defender to stop with his foot. The flick was promptly awarded and converted. 1-0. Gradually Marlow came into the match and began attacking and an end to end tussle began. Shorts for both sides came and went with Marlow putting a great shot bottom right only for Jeff so clear it from the line, even if he knew as much about it as Western media on Nigerian massacres. The 3's went closest when after being played in Dan managed to miss slotting near post and then later dinking it over the keeper on to see it roll past the far post. Another great move down the right, Joe played it across the D where Nick got all he could behind it as he dived in, only for the Marlow keeper to pull off an excellent save.

Page 6: Many Thank To Josie Spencer - Pell · introduction of any of the new Rules No. 546 –59th Season Grahampile@aol.com Website: EastcoteHockeyClub.com Place your order with RnP Enterprises

The EastcoNet 6 31st January 2015

Half-time Lewis focused on keeping the pressure firmly on. Again the next goal would be crucial and was determined that the 3's be the one to score it. The 3's set out with the same purpose as before but this time Marlow applied the early pressure. Winning a couple of shorts but all were charged down as Eastcote played a quick counter attacking game. Eventually breaking down the left with Lewis and Alex exchanging passes before shifting the ball across the middle to the right where nick drew the keeper before squaring to Jimmy to slot home. 2-0. However Marlow weren't about to lay down and hit back with a well worked short corner. 2-1. Gradually the 3's looked to hold and Marlow threw everything forward, firing in more shots than at the Charlie Hebdo editors office, but couldn't find a way through and it ended 2-1. A vital win over 3rd place puts the 3's firmly in the promotion running, but most importantly gave Lewis the bragging rights at work. Man of the Match, a great team effort, but goes to Jimmy. Great on the counter and constantly a treat. Dick of the day? Jeff for passing straight to an opposition forward for the 2nd time in 2 days!

Old Boars v Old Cranleighans Barnstormers Saturday 24th January Won 9-4

Dotty Goes Potty as Shotty Ruled a Notty

We won 9-4. Now that is a scoreline that you don't often see and the uncommon item is the goals against column. Yes, teams can dominate and win 9-0. Yes, teams can be evenly matched and draw 4-4. But to concede four goals when scoring nine; well, that's anomalous and surely indicative of either defensive incompetency or the intermittent influence of some supernatural presence. Well, the surprising answer is that it was neither of those, but instead, according to the Old Boars post-match inquiry, the fault of the dazzling and blinding sun. I kid you not. You see, that's the beauty of a veteran's team, they have a multitude of well-worn excuses for every occasion, and they're not embarrassed to use any of them, even the very far fetched. Anyway, in the interests of balance I should provide a few details on the goals we scored. Five from Simon Samuel, two goals from the now absolved Stuey Wilson (following on from the previous week's aerated aberration), and one each for Mike Pell and the relentless Monty...and most emphatically none for Dotty, so please don't let him tell you otherwise! Men’s 5s v Ashford 3s Saturday 24th January Won 2 - 1

A big “6 pointer” sees us with 15 points on the board!

Buoyed by the victory over Oxford last week we travelled to Ashford with high hopes of pulling off the double over them but in the full knowledge they would be looking to take the points off us. We were one place ahead in the league so a true “6 pointer”. Ashford could see we were keen when they turned up to discover we had been there for 20 minutes...not so much eagerness as free flowing traffic on the M25 for a change! We took control very early on with a customary break which ended up with Speedy, the poacher from midfield putting one in the net. Not very much later until we broke again and this time Speedy, now acclaimed as a goal scoring hero, plucked a rising ball out of the air to lob the keeper and we were 2 up. We actually hit the back of the net again in the second half but this fact seemed to escape the umpires and 2-0 it remained. We knew we would have to up our game and improve our possession from the mid field forward. Ashford came back at us very strongly and all credit to a young team that at times faced considerable intimidation for their courageous defending. We absorbed a lot of pressure but also continued to have chances that we didn’t put away. Ashford scored from a sweetly hit short corner and it was game on for the last quarter. Our defence held strong and we came off worthy winners. The victory was made even more memorable when we ran through the other successes Ashford had secured in the bar with them afterwards. They had, in fact, drawn with all 3 of the top teams in our league demonstrating how difficult it is to score against them.

Ladies 4’s v PHC Chiswick 6’s Saturday 24th January Won 4 - 0

Short and Sweet! Initially in the first half we were slow to start however we held the majority of the possession and by half time it was 1-0 to eastcoteIn the second half we picked up the pace and our forward and mid line kept the pressure within there 25, with our back line ensuring it didn't get past the halfway line. Chiswick managed some breaks yet posed no threat to a frozen Fi!. A further 3 goals for eastcote. Strong goals from Emily, Cerys, Sophie and Georgina Everyone had a good game and a Great team effort we were unlucky the goal count was not higher.

25/01/2015 U14B Dragons A Guildford 13:30 Lost 1 - 4

U14 boys Dragons v Guildford Lost 1- 4 This week the Dragons made the long journey to face Guildford a club that has proven to be a real challenge for the Dragons in the past, with very heavy defeats in the last three times matches were played. Musa having experience of last seasons whitewashes by Guildford was unusually confidant as the week before he had played in goal for the u16s against Guildford and faced a torrent of shots, the u16s lost 2-9 however Musa saved about 15 on target shots which fuelled his confidence. However, the Dragons were not going to let Musa have a hard day and Guildford only managed to get 6-7 shots on goal. The Dragons have grown in strength and confidence since the beginning of the season and it was notable that this side had developed into a much stronger team. Within minutes of pushback and some great interconnecting play from Luke, Tanveer, Munraj and

finally Ollie to score the opener the Dragons were in the lead. Guildford re grouped and came back hard however for the first 15 minutes the Dragons held strong with out standing midfield performances from Harry and Shiv and fantastic defensive work from Akshay and Matthew. Then Guildford got lucky and scored this luck stayed with them for three more goals. So at half time the score was 1-4, the Dragons knew that they were not playing a side that was dominating them and after some tactical field changes the second half started, this time Guildford did not score unfortunately nor did the Dragons and the full time score was 1-4. Man of the match was Suleyman and notable performances were seen from Nikhil, Jack and Sherwin. Dragons have learnt how to breathe fire roll on the rest of the season. Z
