“Disciples in Training”
In the month of May we had a sermon series titled “At the Crossroads”. This series focused more on the dis-tractions, noise and danger that is present in the “crossroads” and how that relates to a Christian life ra-ther than the “crossroads” we find ourselves in wondering which direction we need to go. We constantly have noise and distractions in our life coming from all sorts of outside influences and these noises and distractions have a goal – to have us question our faith and to draw us away from our Savior. We must really stay focused and intentionally work on our relationship with Jesus in or-der to withstand the temptations that come from all the noise and distractions. We know that our ability to stand firm in our faith comes only through the power of the Holy Spirit living in us.
We have been placed at the “crossroads” in Hamilton. Believe it or not, there is a lot of noise and distrac-tions in our small town tempting us, and everyone in our community. As Christians, we are called to be a witness of who Jesus is and what He has done for us so that more people can come to know who He is and what He has done for them. In order to carry out this task we have to be Jesus’ disciples. In the New Testament, Jesus’ disciples followed Him around and learned from Him. This is why it is so important for us to read His Word and learn from it.
Over the summer months, our sermon series is going to be titled “Disciples in Training”. We are going to fol-low Jesus through our Gospel readings and learn. We will be looking at these Gospel readings focusing on what Je-sus is really trying to teach His disciples. Then we will apply how a particular teaching applies to our lives and how we can use it as we live in this world for Jesus. One thing that we always need to remember is that Jesus never expects us to do this on our own. In fact, Jesus is already at work in the world and in the lives of peo-ple. All He asks us to do is join Him. He will place us where we need to be or place the people in our lives where He is already working. We simply need to have our eyes and ears open looking and listening for the opportu-nities that He places in our everyday lives.
May God give us the desire and passion to seek Him daily as we continue to share the message of our risen Savior with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross,
On which the Prince of glory died.
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God.
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet.
Or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing so divine,
Demands my soul, my life my all.
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

1707 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Galatians 6:14 (NKJV)
After Isaac Watts finished his college studies and returned home to Southampton, he wrote many of his now-immortalized hymns for Above Bar Congregational Church. In 1696, Isaac, twenty-two, left home for London to become a tutor.
All the while, he was feeling a clear tug toward ministry. On his twenty-fourth birthday, July 17, 1698, Isaac preached his first sermon. The following year, he became assistant pastor of London’s Mark Lane Church.
In March of 1700, Isaac received a long letter from his brother, Enoch, urging him to publish the hymns he had written at Southampton. The letter said:
Dear Brother, In your last (letter) you (mentioned) an inclination to oblige the world by showing it your hymns in print, and I heartily wish ...that you were something more than inclinable thereunto...I am very confident whoever has the happiness of reading your hymns (unless he be either sot or atheist) will have a very favorable opinion of their author...There is...a great need of a pen, vigorous and lively as yours, to quicken and revive the dying devotion of the age...Yours now is the old truth, stripped of its ragged orna-ments, and appears, if we may say so, younger by ages in a new and fashion-able dress.
Isaac, however, hesitated. He had other obligations on his time. On March 8, 1702, he became Mark Lane’s pastor. The next year, 1703, the church chose Samuel Price of Wales to assist Isaac, due to the latter’s fragile health. Under the preaching of these two, the old, dying church revived. The building grew too small for the crowds, and a new house of worship was built down the street.
Finally in 1707, Watts published his hymns, selling the copyright to a Mr. Lawrence, the publisher, for ten pounds. This volume was an instant success. It was enlarged and republished in 1709.
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” appeared in his 1707 book of hymns. Inspired by Galatians 6:14, it was originally titled “Crucifixion to the World, by the Cross of Christ.” Many consider it the finest hymn in English church history, and Charles Wesley reportedly said he would rather have written it that all his own.

June 15-19
ONLINE Kids will discover that they can trust Jesus in this transforming experience. Life is rocky for kids - full of ups and downs and twists and turns. At Rocky Railway, kids will explore Jesus’ power and how we can trust Jesus to pull us through when life feels like a valley or a mountaintop. Kids will deepen their friendship with Jesus and learn to know that they can trust Him to do big things in their lives.
Our Virtual VBS will include music, bible stories, science lessons, mission opportunities, crafts and games. The unique thing about this year - you can have VBS where and when you want, even multiple times a day.
You can register your child by filling out the form on our website www.stjohnhamilton.org and clicking the “submit” button. You will need to fill out a registration form for each child. Please preregister by Tuesday, June 9, 2020 The first 100 to register will receive a supply packet with crafts, Bible Memory Buddies, etc. Supply packet pickup will be Friday, June 12th, from 11:00am - 1:00pm at St. John Lutheran Church Family Life Center. We pray that God blesses our week to-gether in this unique way.
