The Eagle March 2020

Dear Friends in Christ, Back in the early centuries of the Christian Church, the forty days before the Festival of the Resurrection became a special training period for new believers before they were baptized en masse at the Vigil, the night before Easter. This training period reflected the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). Desig-nating these six weeks on the calendar as a kind of “team training season” was yet another way believers in the ear-ly Church sought to follow the rhythms of Jesus’ life and imitate him. They wanted their schedules to reflect Jesus’ life in a very literal way. During those forty days, the Christian neophytes received instruction in the basic ideas and practices of the faith. A question-and-answer teaching format not only helped them grasp the fundamentals of Christianity, but also equipped them to speak openly about Jesus and share him with people who were submerged in a culture of pagan-ism, skepticism, fear and unbelief. Over the centuries, the training period morphed into the forty day season of Lent we know now. The word “Lent” itself comes from Old English and means “Spring season.” I like how Training and Spring Renewal come together in this, my personal favorite season of the Church year. There is no worthwhile training in this broken world that does not involve self-control, struggle, personal challenge, and self-discipline. As any top athlete will agree, effective training always involves a degree of self-abnegation. Hence the common traditional Lenten disciplines of renunciation (giving something up to focus more keenly on Je-sus), and adding new things to our schedules (e.g. personal devotions). An old warrior proverb captures the original spirit of Lent: “Train hard, fight easy.” We don’t train to save ourselves (God has done that). Jesus has saved us, so now we can get on with the daily training that makes the brief battle we’re left to fight in this world before we die easier. So what are some “Spring training” opportunities at St. John’s? During Lent (February 26th-April 9th) we add extra Wednesday worship services to the calendar at Noon and 6:15 p.m. This year, on Wednesdays, we’ll be exploring a topic that captures the idea of Lent perfectly: “A New and Right Spirit.” Of course, we always offer opportunities for believers of all ages to jump in the faith-training process: Five adult classes every Sunday, Sunday School, evening Bible classes, youth activities, mission projects, and a boatload of ongoing service opportunities. I encourage you to participate in Lenten Spring training at St. John’s this year in whatever way you can. The world is always tempting us with false fixes, and the enemy wants us to go it alone. Jesus has set us free from the misery of trying to control every aspect of our own lives all the time. Instead of fighting our battles alone and feeling the full weight of our own sins, weaknesses, failures and mortality, we can continually train ourselves for a whole new pur-pose in life. We can join God’s fight for the sake of the many people in our lives and in our community who are struggling with a sense of meaninglessness, abandonment, and death. Following the discipline of Lent is a way of answering Jesus’ call: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30). That might be the most surprising thing about Lent: under the dust of Ash Wednesday, the solemnity of the season, and our special acts of self-discipline, we walk with the One who opens the door to true joy. Christian training, like any other serious training, is going to involve failures and frustrations as well as victories. But spring is coming. A new life is coming. In Christ, it’s all going to end in a resurrection. May God’s peace be with you! Pastor Seth Jersild

OUR LENTEN JOURNEY THEME: “A NEW AND RIGHT SPIRIT”
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
In this holy season of Lent, we ask God to align our spirit with His desires for us, our families, our church, our communities, and our world. This alignment takes the form of certain attitudes that are not naturally part of our personalities. In Lent, we ask God to plant these attitudes deep within our hearts. As they are nurtured in the community of faith through worship, prayer, service, and study, these attitudes begin to take root and grow—not perfectly, but steadily. Lent calls us to think, decide, and act out of these desires that make up our new nature as baptized believers who are sealed with the Holy Spirit and marked with Christ’s cross forever. Join us on Wednesdays at 12 noon and 6:15pm.
Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26 “The Spirit of Repentance” Wednesday, March 4 “The Spirit of Truth” Wednesday, March 11 “The Spirit of Trust” Wednesday, March 18 “The Spirit of Perseverance” Wednesday, March 25 “The Spirit of Humility” Wednesday, April 1 “The Spirit of Power” Maundy Thursday, April 9 “The Spirit of Community”

The Lenten Bible Project!
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105
The Bible Project starts on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26th and goes through Lent, until Easter Sunday, April 12th.
The 3rd—6th grade students are collecting monies to buy new Bibles for the Bed
Brigade. When the Bed Brigade delivers beds, families will get a new Bible!
Pick up a special offering envelope in the link area or north entrance. Make checks out to St. John’s Lutheran and note in the memo that it’s for the “Bible Project”.
This project is being led by 3rd—6th grade students. They have posters up throughout the church that they’ve colored. They’ve also written about their favorite Bible story which will be posted in the March/
April Eagle and also in weekly bulletins. See a few of their stories below. The students are also checking on the envelopes every week and coming around and sharing the project to different small groups. You’ll
also see several students share this month through temple talks and Facebook posts on the St. John’s private Facebook page.
One thing is for certain, they are very excited about collecting monies to buy Bibles for the Bed Brigade recipients! After Easter students will purchase and deliver Bibles to the Grove City Bed Brigade site.
Brayden Gottshall
“My favorite story of the Bible is the Devil in the Desert. This story is about how Jesus was fasting for 40 days and nights in the desert. The devil went to Jesus and tempted him. Jesus said, ‘Do not put the Lord to the test.’ The devil left and the angels came to him. I like this story because I think it’s cool that Jesus had to fight against temptation, but he won! I think everyone should read this story because if you trust
the Word of God then nobody will be able to cause you to fail. Please give a donation to the Lenten Bible Project so when beds are delivered to families, the families also get a new Bible.”
Dylan Allman
“My favorite Bible story is the parting of the Red Sea. God sent Moses to free the Israelites. During their escape, God had Moses part the Red Sea so they could cross it. When the Egyptians came the sea
returned to normal hurting them. I like this story because it shows how God can send anyone to do big things. Please give a donation to the Lenten Bible Project so others can read this story.”
Ben Previts
“My favorite story of the Bible is Jesus’ Birth. This story is about Jesus being born from Mary in a stable in Jerusalem. I like this story because it tells about our Savior being born. I think everyone should read
this story because you can get hope that Jesus can help you and proof that He is real. Please give a do-nation to the Lenten Bible Project so people who don’t have Bibles can know the Word of God because
you donated to help this project.”
Layla Greer
“My favorite story of the Bible is about the friends who brought the paralyzed man to Jesus. The friends sawed a hole in the roof of the house so their friend could see Jesus. I like this story because it talks about a man who had no hope and suddenly he had all the hope in the world. I think everyone should
read this story because it’s good. Please give a donation to the Lenten Bible Project so we can give more Bibles to the Bed Brigade for people who need beds and Bibles.”

One of the best books I have read in the past few years is an immanently practical work entitled, Joining Jesus On His Mission: How to Be an Everyday Missionary, by Greg Finke. When I finished I thought, “This is the kind of down-to-earth, practical ‘how-to’ manual I’ve been waiting for, and that our congregations need.” Author and Lutheran Church Missouri Synod pastor, Finke is the founder of Dwelling 1:14, www.dwelling114.org, an organization based on John 1:14 to help Jesus-followers connect in their neighborhoods, workplaces and schools for discipling and missional living.
A “Joining Jesus On His Mission” workshop led by Greg Finke will be held on Saturday, March 21 at First English Lutheran Church, 53 Park Ave. W., Mans-field, OH 44902. I encourage you, your leaders, and as many congregation mem-bers as possible to register for this opportunity for breakthrough in your understanding and practice of practical discipleship and missional living. What a beautiful sight to see all blessing the blankets during the Contemporary Service on February 9th!
Thanks to a great deal on the blanket kits, two Thrivent grants to pay for the sheets, and the generosity of the congregation,
we were able to put together 55 blanket kits this year! For the first time ever, they included a mattress pad as well!
Thank you to all who made the season a little brighter and warmer for some of our brothers and sisters in need in Central Ohio.
A special thank you to Lauren Wahl and her family for their unselfish service in heading up this project.
Blankets of Love
Are you a Thrivent member? Are you ready to see the power you have to make a HUGE difference in this congregation and the community? Our NEW Thrivent reps, Jeff and Adam Ritter, will be here on Sunday, March 8th and will be introduced at all the Sunday services. They will also hang out in the Link between services to answer any questions you may have.
NEW SUNDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY BEGINS, MARCH 22ND

Light snacks will be provided. Class will not meet on Easter Sunday (April 12th), so we’ll finish on April 26th. Come join the class and enjoy the fellowship and good discussion!
MEXICO MUSINGS
Do you have a heart for the children of Mexico and sharing the Good News with our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Sign up to join the Mexico Mission Family 2020! Mission dates are July 24th through August 3rd, 2020. Contact Diana Imbrock with questions or to sign up.
When we were asked to use one word to describe our Mexico experience, the youngest member of our mission team provided the perfect response; it was beautiful. Beautiful people, beautiful place, and a beautiful experience. God directed my wife and I to St. John’s recently to attend what turned out to be a very moving Good Friday Ser-vice. At that service, we were made aware of the Mexico Mission trip and openings available to serve. God had for some time placed a desire in our hearts to experience Mexico in a way other than as a tourist. Serving orphans at the Rancho Genesis Church Camp satisfied that desire. We loved spending time with the niños and pray that God will bless their lives at the orphanage and in the future. The collective spirit at the camp between the staff and the mission group was terrific. It was very uplifting spiritually. Another thing that was spiritually uplifting was the faith of these children. These orphaned children have had tough lives, and yet they could not wait to pray and sing God’s praises each and every day. There are a number of les-sons to be learned from this experience; including being fully satisfied with what God provides for you each day, and thanking Him for life, our daily bread, our Savior, and a heart to serve. Thanks be to God for all things!

YOUR MISSION SUPPORT for CHELSEA SMITH IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Chelsea is a member of St. John’s and is now working for CRU (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ)
at Capital and Otterbein Universities. In her own words: “Thank you for considering a partnership with me to give every college student a chance to say yes to Jesus and come to know Him as their personal Lord and Savior! I
am so excited to be on staff with Cru, serving God in Central Ohio. I truly believe that reaching college students is
one of the critical components to reaching our world for Christ. These students are our future; they will be the
leaders in every segment of society all around the world. They are also at a stage in life where they are trying to figure out who they are and what they believe in. I would love for you to partner with me! Your investment into
this ministry can make an eternal impact in reaching people for Christ. Like many other missionary organizations,
Cru has no central funds for paying salaries and ministry expenses. Would you prayerfully consider joining my
ministry partner team with a contribution of $100, $200 or even $300 or any other amount in monthly support? All donations made to Cru are tax deductible. If you have any questions about giving
or how to go about connecting me with others please do not hesitate to contact me.
I'm easy to reach: call/text 614-264-2864 or email [email protected].” You
can contribute directly to Chelsea’s ministry by going online to https://give.cru.org/1039077; you can also support her by writing a check made out to
CRU, designating it “for Chelsea Smith,” and mailing it to 100 Lake Hart Drive
#2400, Orlando, FL 32832. Your support is greatly appreciated!

BEACONS and QUILTERS NEWS Come and check out the Beacons and Quilters. You may visit for just a bit and then go on your way. If you want to visit longer, bring your lunch and stay for a couple of hours. You may visit once a month if you don’t want to commit to coming every Tuesday. We have other activities that do not involve working with fabric. We do stamps and cards any Tuesday. A visit is not a com-mitment. The Beacons would like to send a thank you for the anonymous disposable diaper donations. These diapers were given to the mothers at Choices. Your giving helps the mothers-in-need have
an important necessity for their baby. Thank you for caring about the children. If you have decorative or heavy furniture and you do not have the means to transport it to a donation/collection site, consider the non-profit charity, Furniture Bank. They will come and pick up your donation. The Furniture Bank gives furniture to the needy. Their number is 614-272-9544. Their address is 118 South Yale Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43222. Furniture needs to be free of pet hair. The Furniture Bank has groups of woodworkers who make dressers, beds, and tables for those in need of furniture to make a home. Please donate used clothing to the Grove City Methodist Church Purple Door Free Store. The address is 2684 Columbus Street, Grove City, Ohio 43123. Their phone is 614-875-5612. The Beacons no longer take used clothing to Faith Mission. The Methodist Church has an easy drop-off site inside their church. The drop-off site is on the northeast side of the church with the canopy/portico. Park under the canopy/portico for easier unloading. You will probably be there less than 5 minutes. Go through the double doors and go to the left. There are even door-opening-assist levers to press if your arms are full and you can’t manage the doors. The drop-off signs and containers are on the left. This is usually an unmanned, drop-and-go procedure. The drop off times have changed due to volunteer scheduling and space availability. The drop-off times are Sunday from 8am to 2pm, Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 8pm. There are no drop offs Wednesday to Saturday The Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm in rooms 103-104. The Beacons meet with the Quilters on the third Tuesday to help with projects and attend the monthly meeting. Bring a sack lunch. All materials are provid-ed. At the Beacons’ meeting, we take offerings for the food pantries and for the Beacons’ general fund. Proverbs 21:13 “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he, too, will cry out and not be answered.“

Grove City anxiously awaited the opening of our new Mount Carmel Hospital. And it was well worth the wait. Today it is a very busy hospital with people buzzing around constantly. If you have visited the hospital either as a patient or a visitor, you have seen men and women wearing red smocks volunteering their time and wonder what they do and who they are. More than 1,000 individuals provide service annually to the patient families and staff to create an envi-ronment of care and support by greeting and escorting patients and visitors, delivering meals to patients, supporting families in waiting areas and performing hours of comfort rounds to patients.
How many hours do they ask you to work? Do I have the qualifications? Want to know more? Come to our March meeting and you can ask Leslie Aronoff, Regional Director, Mount Carmel Volunteer Service, your questions.
Please arrive around 11:15 am so we can start our meeting promptly at 11:30 am. Bring a covered dish to share – fried chicken, meatloaf and drinks will be provided. Hope to see you there!!
Reservations are a must for this meeting. Please use the salmon insert to make your reservation or call the church office. If you make a reservation and your plans change (even the morning of the event) please call either Bonnie Swanson (614-562-8002) or the church office (614-875-2314). Invite a friend!

Bruce & Karen Whyte at 614-878-9392. This is a wonderful way to share your bless-
ings.
