The Eagle
September 2018
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 3220 Columbus St., Grove City, Ohio
614/875-2314 www.stjohnsgc.org
Dear Disciples of Jesus, “I thank my God every time I remember you, praying in joy for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” (Phil. 1:3-6) As we look forward to September and a whole host of new beginnings, we celebrate and rejoice in the newest of all, our new senior pastor. Now that Pastor Seth has officially begun, take some time to get to know him. Not just reading his bio, but really what makes him tick? Invite him to lunch – without an agenda, just to get to know him. How has God uniquely gifted him? How can you be in prayer for him? He’ll appreciate your effort. Show up for church. Not just his first Sunday, which was HUGE, but in the subsequent Sundays as well. Invest in the continued success of YOUR congregation by supporting your new pastor with your pres-ence, your participation, and your prayer. Resist quick judgments. Stressed, tired, nervous, uncertain, excited, eager – this new pastor of yours may be feeling all of this and more as he begins his ministry with you. Not only has he moved to an unfa-miliar town, he knows no one, and has a lot to take care of to get settled. And, oh yeah, do the ministry besides! So cut him some slack, and look beyond your first impressions. Extend him overflowing measures of grace, and invest in getting to know how you can be in this ministry TOGETHER. He simply cannot be expected to make the changes necessary for growth alone. Nor can he be all things to all peo-ple. Finally, expect the best – from yourself, from one another, and from your pastor. Things are changing. This is a new season in ministry. How can you invest in the success of this ministry in ways that will as-sure a positive outcome? Here are a few hints:
Don’t compare what has been, to what your new pastor is trying to do.
Don’t expect everything to stay the same if you want to grow – that includes YOU
Don’t gossip, complain, or listen to those who do. Lighten up!
The “good old days” deny that God has something even greater in store – look ahead, not behind!
Do not come to your former pastor with anything but praise for the new pastor – take your concerns to
God in humble prayer.
And finally my friends, trust God, stay connected to God, draw strength from God, stay deeply rooted in
God’s Word, and share deeply in the measures of receiving and giving of God’s grace. For God is so very good, and He will never leave you or forsake you. To Him be all Glory!
Looking forward in Faith,
Pastor Patti

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to everyone who helped
support Vacation Bible School and the Carnival. Whether
you donated supplies or money or gave of your time and
talents, we truly could not have done it without you. Our
attendance was great for each event and a good time was
had by all. Special thanks to Christina Allman for doing an
outstanding job of heading up VBS again this year! Well
done good and faithful servants.
Margie Kennell wishes to thank you for your prayers
for her move to her new residence! She particularly wants
to thank Lynne Ehrlich, Joe Eiginger, Lorina Allmon, Lau-
rie Pecuch, Diana and Dennis Imbrock, Nancy Fisher,
Joyce Schoch, Carol Rorick, JoAnn Keller, Chris Hank,
and her family for a smooth move! MANY THANKS to all who have donated items for the food
pantries. Items were delivered this week.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to all the generous people at St. John's who supported our Baby Bottle change drive for the Pregnancy Decision Health Centers of Columbus! The Centers receive no government funding, and the baby bottles are their most important fund source. Thanks to the generosity of church members all over Central Ohio, PDHC is able to offer free ser-vices to everyone who comes to any of their centers. Their ser-vices include pregnancy testing, ultrasound imaging of preborn children, diapers and other baby supplies, baby furniture and clothing, child care and wellness classes, and evangelism, friendship and support as moms walk through challenging preg-nancies.
You filled the bottles with $1045! What a generous congrega-tion! Your gifts will have an effect that we can't even imagine, as God uses them to save babies' lives and bring mothers and families to Him. God bless you, The Respect Life Committee

for a casual lunch and fellowship, and then we’ll divide up into teams to tackle
various projects. If you have cleaning supplies you think will helpful, feel free
to bring them!

Mexico Musings…
Grace, peace, and love to you from the Mexico Mission Family 2018!
Thanks to your prayers, love, and support, we have returned from yet another beautiful,
faith-filled week with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mexico.
Here’s what the mission family said about their experience:
It was a… “refreshing, simple, heart-changing, growing, humbling, beautiful, eye-opening,
heart-scarring, incredible, glorious, up-lifting, encouraging, hope-filled, joyful, restorative,
spirit-lifting, life-changing, and spiritually awakening” experience.
To God be the glory! ¡Gloria a Dios!
The Mexico Mission Family: Christina Allman, Jill Althoff, Emily Briggeman, Joy Easterday,

BEACONS and QUILTERS NEWS The Beacons are nearing that time of the year when we begin thinking ahead
to the Christmas season and our 100 Christmas bags we make for the chil-
dren whose families use the LSS food pantries. The Beacons send many
thanks to those who have already donated items for the bags.
We need a bit more of your help to fill the bags for the children. We would appreciate boxes of 24
Crayola crayons, Beanie Babies-type toys, candy, sturdy combs and hair picks. Please place your do-
nation in the Beacons’ cabinet in the Link. We thank you for your interest and concern.
Remember to save and donate your ever-popular, leftover Halloween candy to the Beacons. We
use leftover Halloween candy to add a little bit of happiness to our bags. Thank you for caring about
the children.
We are thankful to be blessed with the continued anonymous donations of larger-sized baby dia-
pers to Choices. The diapers help the mothers cope with at least one need at a stressful time.
We are collecting cancelled postage stamps to send to two veterans’ hospitals in Virginia. They use
the stamps in their crafts and rehabilitation programs.
We are collecting items for health kits to be given to victims of Ohio disasters. These kits are
made up of a towel and washcloth, 2 full sized, wrapped bars of soap, full size toothpaste (expiration
needs to be at least 2020), toothbrush, sturdy comb, deodorant, and cat litter buckets. We are in great
need of towels. We are accepting cat litter buckets until September 15th. We are accepting used Bi-
bles, also. Please place your donations marked for Ohio disasters in the Beacons’ cabinet in the Link.
We will be taking these health kits to the September LSS meeting.
The second 2018 general meeting of the LSS Auxiliaries will be September 22, 2018 at Holy Trini-
ty Lutheran Church, 2001 Northwest Blvd., Columbus, Ohio 43212 from 11:30AM-1:30PM. Call St.
John’s if you would like a ride. The LSS auxiliaries are hoping to come together and collect newborn
baby items to fill the remaining 25 diaper bags. Please donate newborn baby items. The diaper bags
were bought with grant money from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. They will be given to the moth-
ers-in-need at the LSS food pantries. Please place your marked donations in the Beacons’ cabinet in
the Link. The auxiliaries send sincere thanks to you for helping the mothers care for their babies and
for showing Christian concern.
The Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm in rooms 103-104. The Beacons meet with the
Quilters on the third Tuesday to sort and bag clothes, cut stamps, and help with projects. Bring a sack
lunch. All materials are provided. At the Beacons’ meeting, we take monetary offerings for the food
pantries and for the Beacons’ general fund.
“Not everyone can do great things, but everyone can do small things with great love.”
-Mother Teresa

For more information call Glenda Allman at 614-871-0060 or
Diana Imbrock at 614-271-5775.
DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE BLESSED BY RECEIVING A PRAYER SHAWL? Please call Nancy Kinman at 614-875-8155.
OWLS UPCOMING EVENT – September 21, 2018
If you ask a few OWLS (Older Wiser Lutherans) to name one of their favorite meetings of the year I think
a lot of them would say “Der Dutchman! Of course!” What’s not to like about a restaurant that exemplifies
both the beauty of a country setting and the bounty of a country kitchen. They serve generous portions of
hearty, home-style Amish Kitchen Cooking. They might not be as good as our Lutheran cooks but we
think they’re pretty good. Their bakery is full of pastries, cakes and pies that are baked fresh daily. And if
you have any money left their gift shop is very inviting.
The planning committee would like to invite you to share a meal with your OWLS friends and share our
time together by simply talking to each other. It seems we are always in a hurry after church or church
functions that it is sometimes difficult to catch up with those we don’t see often. God blessed each of us
by leading us to St. John’s and offering us the Christian fellowship that is priceless.
You will be able to order from the menu or enjoy their wonderful buffet. The buffet costs $13.29 plus your
drink. Our lunch reservation is for 11:30 am. We will meet at the church at 10:30 am for a brief meeting
and organize a carpool. We will leave the church no later than 10:45 am.
Please use the salmon insert in the News Notes to sign up. If you need to cancel, please call the church
office or Bonnie Swanson (614-562-8002). Reservations are very important for this meeting.
CALLING ALL OWLS! INVITATION TO JOIN THE OWLS
Have you retired recently? Are you looking for a club, group, etc. to get involved in to
share your love of God? The Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors at St. John’s would like to
invite all members to join the fun and share the Christian fellowship at our monthly
meetings. An OWL might be a little older in age but we are very young at heart.
There isn’t an age requirement but you must be old enough to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of others
from St. John’s. We are a very active group that meets the third Friday of every month for either a potluck
lunch at the church or an outing to visit different interests around the area.
On Your Confirmation Day
A light is coming into your heart to shine
As a beacon all your days.
As a child of God you will be part of his family,
Following his living ways.
As you take your vow you gain a friend
Who forgives your sins and stays beside you
In sunshine and rain,
Giving you his Holy Spirit as a lamp and a guide.
Follow Him as a faithful lamb and never stray
As He prepares a home for you above.
He will bless and keep you forever in his
Unending love.

God’s Book of Life, The Bible
More than a novel penned by human hand
God’s sacred Book of Life is written to reveal
His will to his children.
Only He, the author, knows how and when it will end.
In “the Greatest Story Ever Told”
We are held spellbound as it unfolds
Beholding the Son of Man, born for this prophetic hour,
Christ Jesus, Ruler of all, coming with peace and power
To save his beloved human race and show repentant
Sinners His everlasting grace.
As Christ, our Savior, walks with us along his blessed
way,
In the distance the sun’s rays shine upon a new day.
