3a Wherefore the voice of the Lord is unto the ends of the earth, that

all that will hear may hear; 3b prepare ye, prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is

nigh; and the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth; and the arm of the Lord shall be revealed;

3c and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people;

3d for they have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant; they seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness,

3e but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.

The Lord speaks of both ordinances and sacraments in the latter day scriptures

He calls the ordinances “mine” ordinances”

He calls the sacraments “thy” or “your” sacraments

4b And again, I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye

may not be deceived; for Satan is abroad in the land, and he goeth forth deceiving the nations;

4c wherefore he that prayeth whose spirit is contrite, the same is accepted of me, if he obey mine ordinances.

4d He that speaketh, whose spirit is contrite, whose language is meek, and edifieth, the same is of God, if he obey mine ordinances.

4e And again, he that trembleth under my power shall be made strong, and shall bring forth fruits of praise, and wisdom, according to the revelations and truths which I have given you.

5a And again, he that is overcome and bringeth not forth fruits, even according to this pattern, is not of me; wherefore by this pattern ye shall know the spirits in all cases, under the whole heavens.

2a Behold, I, the Lord, who was crucified for the sins of

the world, giveth unto you a commandment, that you shall forsake the world.

2b Take upon you mine ordinances, even that of an elder, to preach faith and repentance, and remission of sins, according to my word, and the reception of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands.

2f And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted

from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day; for verily this is a day appointed unto thee to rest from thy labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High;

2g nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days, and at all times;

2h but remember that on this, the Lord's day, thou shalt offer thine oblations, and thy sacraments, unto the Most High, confessing thy sins unto thy brethren, and before the Lord.

1a Behold, verily thus saith the Lord unto you, In

consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation,

1b that inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold, it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together, to offer up your sacraments before him.

20 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and brake,

and gave to them, and said, Take it, and eat. 21 Behold, this is for you to do in remembrance of my body; for as oft

as ye do this ye will remember this hour that I was with you. 22 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to

them; and they all drank of it. 23 And he said unto them, This is in remembrance of my blood

which is shed for many, and the new testament which I give unto you; for of me ye shall bear record unto all the world.

24 And as oft as ye do this ordinance, ye will remember me in the hour that I was with you and drank with you of this cup, even the last time in my ministry.

25 Verily I say unto you, Of this ye shall bear record; for I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine with you, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

94 Be wise in the days of your probation; strip

yourselves of all uncleanness; ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts, but ask with a firmness unshaken, that ye will yield to no temptation, but that ye will serve the true and living God.

95 See that ye are not baptized unworthily; see that ye partake not of the sacrament of Christ unworthily; but see that ye do all things in worthiness, and do it in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God: and if ye do this, and endure to the end, ye will in no wise be cast out.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary OR'DINANCE, n.

1. A rule established by authority; a permanent rule of action. An ordinance may be a law or statute of sovereign power. In this sense it is often used in the Scriptures. Ex. 15. Num. 10. Ezra 3. It may also signify a decree, edict or rescript, and the word has sometimes been applied to the statutes of Parliament, but these are usually called acts or laws. In the United States, it is never applied to the acts of Congress, or of a state legislature.

2. Observance commanded.

3. Appointment.

4. Established rite or ceremony. Heb. 9. In this sense, baptism and the Lord's supper are denominated ordinances.

Ordinances are appointments with God

God ordains (sets them apart) ordinances to establish order in His church.

Ordinances are the appropriate and lawful venues (settings) in which we come into God’s presence

Remember, God is a God of order – I Corinthians 14

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (vs. 33)

“Let all things be done decently and in order.” (vs. 40)

2. An oath; a ceremony producing an obligation; but not used in this general sense.

3. In present usage, an outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace; or more particularly, a solemn religious ceremony enjoined by Christ…

Sacraments are our oaths and offerings we bring before

God in His ordinances

Mormon 4: 94 Be wise in the days of your probation; strip yourselves of

all uncleanness; ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts, but ask with a firmness unshaken, that ye will yield to no temptation, but that ye will serve the true and living God.

1a The rise of the church of Christ in these last days, being one

thousand eight hundred and thirty years since the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the flesh, it being regularly organized and established agreeably to the laws of our country, by the will and commandments of God in the fourth month, and on the sixth day of the month which is called April;

1b which commandments were given to Joseph Smith, Jr., who was called of God and ordained an apostle of Jesus Christ, to be the first elder of this church; and to Oliver Cowdery, who was also called of God an apostle of Jesus Christ, to be the second elder of this church, and ordained under his hand:

1c and this according to the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be all glory both now and forever. Amen.

“…for we had not long been engaged in solemn and

fervent prayer when the word of the Lord came unto us in the chamber, commanding us that I should ordain Oliver Cowdery to be an elder in the Church of Jesus Christ, and that he also should ordain me to the same office, and then to ordain others as it should be made known unto us, from time to time: we were, however, commanded to defer this our ordination until such times as it should be practicable to have our brethren, who had been and who should be baptized, assembled together, when we must have their sanction to our thus proceeding to ordain each other and have them…

decide by vote whether they were willing to accept us as

spiritual teachers, or not, when also we were commanded to bless bread and break it with them, and to take wine, bless it, and drink it with them, afterward proceed to ordain each other according to commandment, then call out such men as the Spirit should dictate, and ordain them, and then attend to the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost upon all those whom we had previously baptized; doing all things in the name of the Lord.” -Times and Seasons, vol. 3, p. 915. Having opened the meeting by solemn prayer to our

heavenly Father we proceeded (according to previous commandment) to call on our brethren to know whether they accepted us as their teachers in the things of the kingdom of God, and whether they were satisfied that we should proceed and be organized as a church according to said commandment which we had received. To these they consented by a unanimous vote. I then laid my hands upon Oliver Cowdery and ordained him an elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,' after which he ordained me also to the office of an elder of said church. …

We then took bread, blessed it, and brake it with them,

also wine, blessed it, and drank it with them. We then laid our hands on each individual member of the church present that they might receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and be confirmed members of the Church of Christ. The Holy Ghost was poured out upon us to a very great degree. Some prophesied, whilst we all praised the Lord and rejoiced exceedingly."-Times and Seasons, vol. 3, pp. 944, 945. 40 And it came to pass that he break bread again, and blessed it, and

gave to the disciples to eat. 41 And when they had eaten he commanded them that they should

break bread, and give it unto the multitude. 42 And when they had given unto the multitude, he also gave them

wine to drink, and commanded them that they should give unto the multitude.

43 Now there had been no bread, neither wine, brought by the disciples, neither by the multitude; but he truly gave unto them bread to eat, and also wine to drink;

44 And he said unto them, He that eateth this bread, eateth of my body to his soul, and he that drinketh of this wine, drinketh of my blood to his soul, and his soul shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled.

45 Now when the multitude had all eaten and drunk, behold they were filled with the Spirit, and they did cry out with one voice, and gave glory to Jesus, whom they both saw and heard.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of

the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh condemnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we

should not be condemned with the world. 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one

for another.
