Clergy are being advised not to share the chalice and to encourage worshippers not to shake hands during the ‘Sign of the Peace’ in services, as part of updated guidance from the Church of England on coronavirus.
Bishop Nicholas has emailed all clergy in the Diocese, forwarding a letter from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York advising priests that, "in light of the continued increase of Covid-19 cases in the United Kingdom, that it is now necessary to suspend the administration of the chalice as well as physical contact during the sharing of the peace, blessing or laying on of hands."
The guidance to our priests, as elsewhere in the country, is to:
• offer Communion in one kind only to all communicants i.e. the consecrated bread/ wafer/ host, with the priest alone taking the wine
• suspend handshaking or other direct physical contact during the sharing of the peace
• suspend direct physical contact as part of a blessing or ‘laying on of hands’

Dear Friends,
A few weeks ago one of the weather forecasters described the fronts above us as rivers of water, rolling in one after the other, before cascading down on us. Today, in our daily Lent reading from ‘Care for God’s Creation’, the words in Psalm 65 rang a bell. It says, ‘The streams of God are filled with water … you drench the furrows and level its ridges’. It is, in fact, a hymn of praise to God for enabling an abundance of corn and fruit and life itself. It’s not always easy to see that when we have such an abundance of water at the moment! Someone suggested now is the time to start building reservoirs and were laughed down, but we are a country on the edge of all the weather systems and could be suffering a drought next year.
As I write this, on the 10th March, we are also being cascaded with advice about the Corona virus. It is worrying and I think everyone is being as careful as possible. For something which is so out of our control I do believe that prayer is very powerful and is much needed for all those suffering the disease, their loved ones and all nurses and doctors who care for them.
These two subjects, the rain and the virus, seem to dominate our lives at the moment and in both cases are pretty well out of our control. Yet there is an ever growing swell of people fighting for a cleaner world and to stop climate change. There are also vast numbers of people in laboratories at Porton, and many
other places, working to find an anti viral answer. These, like the daffodils, primroses and blossom on the trees, are signs of hope.
Psalm 65, addressing God, says, ‘You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly…to provide the people with corn. You soften it with showers and bless its crops.’ God has given us so much to be glad about in this amazing world, and as Easter nears we remember that he gave his only Son for us too for he loves us so much.
Wishing you a healthy and happy Easter,
Cynthia.

Wiltshire Council Report A 1.99% rise in the Council tax has been agreed together with a £10 per annum rise in the police precept. Highway Matters Barriers along Butterfurlong Road – These are still awaited. Windwhistle Lane A meeting has been arranged for the 23rd March in West Grimstead Village Hall regarding the possible closure of the lane. Signs and speeding Long Drove The Speed survey showed that the percentile speed was 33.4 mph. The mean speed was 27.5. 33.8% of recorded vehicles were exceeding the posted speed limit which means the speed of these vehicles was 33.8 mph. No further action will be taken. Bugmore Lane Ditch The Drainage Team to be reminded of the ongoing problem. Potholes Maypole Green This work is still outstanding. Overgrown hedges Some of the cutting back has been carried out. Flooding Dean Road It was reported that there had been serious flooding along the road and a tractor has helped vehicles that have become stuck. It appears that the culvert bridge by the sewage works is too low which means the water flows over the top. This to be looked into. Footpaths The broken footpath sign at the end of Bugmore Lane still needs attention. Some work has been carried out to the stiles on the circular path but until the weather improves, there is little more to be done. Going Green It was reported that the two recycling bins have not really been used. Maintenance of Big Pond EG. This is still being looked into.
Litter Pick-up The litter pick-up in both villages will take place on the 21st March in line with the National Litter-Pick Day. Vacancy One person in West Grimstead has expressed an interest in becoming a councillor. Should there be any more applicants, then interviews will be held. Alderbury and West Grimstead School A request for funds has been received from the school. At a recent visit to the school by Cllr Sowerby, two areas requiring funding are: The wild life ponds needs relining A shelter over the existing seating in the small garden is needed. The school to obtain quotes. Defibrillator, West Grimstead After some discussion it was decided that the code will now be put on the machine. Some people felt that the machine should be put on the village hall but the Village Hall Committee would rather see it in the telephone kiosk and will trial it for another few months. The problem is that there are too many books in the kiosk and a box may be put outside for the storage of excess books. The Parish Council to keep a record as to when to purchase new batteries and pads. Date of Next Meeting – 6th April 2020 at West Grimstead Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. [email protected]

A number of cases of COVID-19, Coronavirus have been confirmed in the Wiltshire Council area. National governments have implemented measures to stop the virus spreading.
We all have a responsibility to stop the virus spreading so what can we practically do?
DO
• Wash your hands with soap and water often. Do this for at least 20 seconds.
• Always wash your hands when you get home, or get into work.
• Use a hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze.
• Put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards.
• Try to avoid contact with people who are unwell.
DO NOT
• Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
What are the symptoms?
• A cough
• A high temperature
• Shortness of breath
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have the virus. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common such as a cold or flu. Unless you believe you might have been in close contact with someone
who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you are displaying these symptoms, or you have been contacted by Public Health England directly, you don’t need to do anything.
What do I do if I’m displaying these symptoms?
Stay at home for 7 days if you have either:
• A high temperature
• A new continuous cough
This will help protect others in the community while you are infectious.
Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.
You do not need to contact NHS 111 to tell them you are staying at home.
Testing will not take place for people who are self-isolating with mild symptoms.
You can find more up to date information on the website together with a Community pack with lists of key contacts, resources and other information.

Our exploration of stories this term has taken us far and wide, and the children have, as always, enjoyed a wide selection of self-initiated and adult led activities to extend their learning.
The frogspawn has arrived and the tadpoles are growing fast. The children have been fascinated by the gills and how quickly they disappear as the tadpoles develop. They will be returned safely to the pond later on. We are looking forward to a visit to Langford Lakes in the near future to see them in their natural habitat.

Speed Campaign
This month the Brownies and Rangers have been activitely involved in the speed campaign in the village.
The Brownies have been busy designing posters to be displayed around the vil-lage asking people to keep their speed down.
The Rangers had a meeting with Clive Gutteridge to find out all about the cam-paign, and then worked on their own plan to reduce speeding. This is all part of the Take Action badge they are work-ing on this term.
We are still looking for additional sup-port at Guides, either an extra adult help-er or a DofE student. If you know of any-one who would be interested in helping then please ask them to contact
Nicki McCarney on 07803-052273 or [email protected].

From February 2021 two of the most polluting fuels available will begin to be phased out from sale for use in the home. They are wet wood and house coal. Wet wood, or unseasoned wood will be withdrawn from February 2021. Seasoned wood, which is often kiln dried, has a moisture content less than 20%, will still be available. It is of course more expensive.
Bagged house coal will also disappear from sale from February 2021, with the sale of loose coal sold through merchants directly to households coming to an end in February 2023.
Larger volumes ( 2m3 ) of wet wood can still be bought, but it will have to be stored and dried before use. All solid fuel producers will need to demonstrate low sulphur content and smoke emissions as part of the new regulations.
So it’s not a ban on wood or coal burning stoves, it is a set of measures to remove the most polluting fuels. It is likely to lead to an increase in fuel costs.
The main driver isn’t climate change, but pollution. The problem is PM2.5 - a term used to describe solid particles and liquid droplets in the air with a size of less than 2.5 micrometres. Inhaling particulate pollution can have a significant impact on health. Road vehicles, industrial processes and domestic burning of non-smokeless fuels are the major contributors to PM2.5 in our atmosphere. In the UK, burning wood and coal on
stoves and open fires is estimated to produce approximately 40% of PM2.5. In contrast, a relatively smaller amount - 12% - comes from road transport.

First there were whispers
But then came a warning
Waiting and watching
Will it be us
The springs of Pitton
Come threatening once more
Sightings of sandbags
But are there enough
A lake, or a mirage, further afield
Eerily silent but nothing to see
Waiting and watching
Will it be us
Caterpillar coils
Hugging the kerb
Humming all day
And all through the night
Dennis arrived and it rained all around
its deluge ceaseless for days upon end
waiting and watching
Will it be us?
In February, we drove to the New Forest Inn, Ashurst from where we began our walk going through the Inn’s garden and on to the New Forest. Turning left over a bridge, we followed the path alongside the railway line and past the local camp and caravan site (which was closed for the winter) turning right into woodland. We continued through the woodland and turned left over a railway bridge after which we turned right into Churchplace Enclosure. It was a cold, but sunny day and we met several people with their dogs and, as our walk followed the New Forest cycle paths, we also met some cyclists enjoying a ride. Our route followed several paths and turns through the Enclosure returning us to the railway bridge, past the camp and caravan site and back to the New Forest Inn for lunch. We agreed that, although it had been cold, it had been a pleasant walk and Tegan, Bertie, Leila and Inky, four of our canine members, enjoyed all the interesting smells they found.
Thank you to Peter and Janice Ford for organising and leading the walk. A report on March’s walk will be in the next issue. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 29 April.
Our walks begin at 10.00am from West Grimstead Village Hall so if you would like to join us, just come along - you will be very welcome. For information about the group, please contact Gwynneth Doran (710124) or Janice Ford (710805).

You have often suspected this: those meetings at work are largely pointless, except they do provide you with a chance to talk.
That is the conclusion of a team of academics from the University of Malmo in Sweden.
They have found that the growth of managerial and strategy jobs in business has in turn fuelled a rise in the number of meetings that are called; even though the meetings achieve little.
But still the meetings continue, because many managers are unsure of their role, and so they organise meetings to at least give the impression that they are achieving something.
The meetings do achieve one good thing: they are therapeutic in that people like to feel acknowledged by their colleagues, and talking together helps them ‘find a role.’

If you go for a run just once a week, it could be enough to cut the risk of your early death by up to a quarter.
A recent analysis of nearly a quarter of a million people has found that those who head out regularly for a jog – no matter how fast or how far – had far lower death rates.
In fact, it seems that any amount of running can be linked to a 27 per cent reduction in mortality from any cause. This includes a 30 per cent lower risk of heart death and a 23 per cent reduction in the chances of dying from cancer.
Even one run a week of less than 50 minutes is enough to have a significant impact. And there was no evidence to suggest that doing more than this confers any greater benefit.
The study was carried out at the Victoria University in Melbourne and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Meanwhile, according to Public Health England, four in ten of us aged 40-60 fail to manage even a brisk 10-minute walk once a month.
