HIKING/FITNESSExcerpts from a Finnish studyabout health and sitting

Decreasing the time you sit on thecouch just 21 minutes a day can im-prove your health, say Finnish research-ers who set out to discover if reducingsedentary time would harvest any healthbenefits during one year. They foundthat sitting less improved some

biomarkers, including fasting glucose levels, and maintainedmuscle mass during the year.

Office workers with young children participated in the studyconducted at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The partici-pants were randomized into two groups. The participants of theintervention group were provided with counseling to discussstrategies to reduce the amount of time sitting at work and dur-ing leisure time. The participants set personal goals that theybelieved workable. The most common goal for work time was tobreak up long periods of sitting while working and during coffeebreaks. For leisure time, the most common goals were to bemore active during commuting and to increase active time withtheir family.

After counseling, sedentary time, measured by accelerometers— advanced forms of pedometers — decreased by 21 minutes aday compared to the non-intervention group. The interventiongroup's fasting glucose levels decreased slightly, and theirApolipoprotein B-to-Apolipoprotein A-1 ratio, which is a cho-lesterol biomarker related to cardiovascular risk, improved dur-

ing the year. At the same time, they maintained leg muscle mass, whereas the control group's muscle mass decreased by a halfpercent.

"This study shows that it is possible to reduce the sedentary timeof people in a busy phase of life," said study author Arto Pesola,Doctor of Sport Sciences. Studies have shown that increasedsitting time is associated with Type 2 diabetes, cardiovasculardiseases, and premature mortality.

Other studies have also found ways to improve the health of sed-entary workers. Researchers from the University of Missourihave found that fidgeting can help prevent arterial disease byincreasing blood flow in legs. A Danish study found a reductionin body fat after three months of using sit-stand desks. Taking astroll at lunchtime can not only improve your health, but can alsolift your mood immediately and help you handle a stressful after-noon, according to an Australian study.© 2017 NewsmaxHealth. Fitness Focus: The Essential Down Dogby Michael Maginn

Hamstrings are the big muscles behind your thighs. If you standand raise one heel towards your backside, you are using yourhamstrings. When you sit down on a chair, those muscles arerelaxed and become shortened and tight. When they are tight, they pull on your hips and, in our experience, have been onesource of classic lower back pain. There are other sources, ofcourse, i.e., bulging discs, arthritis and even infection. But we’vefound that stretching those hamstrings goes a long way in resolv-ing that uncomfortable lower back.

According to physical therapists, the most effective way tostretch those hamstrings and many other muscle sets is the DownDog pose (aka Downward Facing Dog, or Adho MukhaSvanasna).

It is a rather simple posethat involves your entirebody. You start on yourhands and knees, hands un-der shoulders, knees underhips. With an exhale, upyou go, bringing your rearend up, your head betweenyour shoulders and yourlegs as straight as you can

get them. Spread your hands out like a star fish and gaze back at

your shins while keeping your neck in line with your spine. Theideal is to plant your heels down on the floor while your legs arestraight, your spine lengthened and your belly button drawn intoyour spine. Chances are, you’re not going to get your heels downif you’re just starting. Or perhaps never. Most people feel com-fortable just “pedaling” their heels up and down as a first step togetting comfortable.

Breath slowly and deeply from your belly button. You arestrengthening your shoulders, neck, back, glutes, and lots of othermuscles while you are stretching your hamstrings.

From Down Dog, you can transition to Plank, hold that for 10-20seconds, and then go back to Down Dog. Back and forth be-tween those two is a tremendous stretching and strengtheningexercise. Breathe deeply and slowly. We’ve heard this combina-tion is used in various military boot camps to get recruits intoshape.

There are several variationsyou can use once you getinto Down Dog. Lifting oneleg straight up is one. Thereare others which you cancheck here.

As usual, if you have anycarpal tunnel, shoulder, back, joint issues, or unregu-

lated high blood pressure, please check with a health care profes-sional before you try any of these stretches.
