Welcome to the third edition of the dmg newsletter. Started by Gary Robinson last year we have taken up the mantel of

producing an Abu Dhabi version of this informal bulletin with a view of introducing you to the team and to find out a bit more about what we do and who we are.

We are a multi-cultural, multi-faith, multi-racial team of diverse personalities (and opinions!) from Pakistan and India (no cricket tension, honest), Somali land/Kenya/UAE/Netherlands (depending on who he is talking to), UK, Tunisia, Palestine and Yemen. A veritable mix worthy of any terrorist group. The 9 people making up the Abu Dhabi office are:Simon Mellor – SVP, Hifazat Ahmed – ADIPEC Event Director, Peter Braham – ADIGAS Event Director, Cecil Jacob – Marketing Executive, Hanadi Aliwat – Project Support Officer, Abu Bakar Ismail – Sales Manager, Ahmed Jamal and Ahmed Mahmoud – Customer Service Representatives and myself.

We welcome Simon as our new leader to direct the future of the energy team as a whole and Peter who joined us just a couple of weeks ago to manage the new shows we are launching this year: ADIGAS and Middle East Refining. Hanadi is the longest serving Abu Dhabi member who started the office with Dave in a

broom cupboard over 3 years ago. Cecil joined bringing his previous experience on the show and 10 years in Abu Dhabi advertising. Jo and I both joined the team by transferring from the UK office. Chris Doyle, AJ and AM – it can get confusing with so many Ahmed’s in the office – are the newest additions to the team, starting just before ADIPEC 2010.

Jo is a dmg veteran (serving dmg for 20 years) and unfortunately deserted us for the Dubai office mid last year but she lights up the office occasionally when she comes every other week. Salma manages our operations and, although we haven’t seen her for a while, is an integral part of the team for ADIPEC. Farook left us this week after building up much wasta with security and ADNEC administrative teams – we will miss his ability to find out the ADNEC gossip. Sometimes we are privileged with the presence of Jitesh and Cenil to help with our endless printer problems and now Nithya has been welcomed into the fold as a result of Jo retiring to go back to the UK.

Stuck out in our little satellite office in ADNEC the Abu Dhabi team are lucky to benefit from some degree of separation, but it unfortunately distances us from the rest of dmg and the plus points of working in a larger office with the support and social interaction that offers. This issue will help to further introduce us to you and hopefully to encourage more integration and perhaps some of you may come to visit us in the Abu Dhabi office (if only to watch the IDEX helicopter, tank, free-running and dirt bike displays from the window) and maybe even hold your meetings in our board room.

I hope you enjoy reading our issue of mixed material with everything from quizzes and competitions to staff profiles and reviews and reporting.

It has only been 5 months since joining and some of you will have endured the misfortune of my ramblings more than others. This means that some

of you will know a little about me, but, many of you will not. It was suggested that I should use the newsletter as an opportunity to tell you a little more about myself and I think that this is a good idea.

I graduated when I was 20 years old from Birmingham University in the United Kingdom with a Law LLB Hons Degree. The only idea I had about a future career at the time of graduating was that I had decided that I did not want to be a lawyer. I decided within a matter of weeks to take a job in publishing after realizing that I now needed money to get useful things like food and clothes.

I started my career with a London (UK) based media owner called emap on IT publications and within a year I was asked to join their start up exhibitions division. This move was to take me in to the world of events and this has been my career ever since.

My first senior role was as Managing Director of Focus Events (UK) in 1986, when I was just twenty five years old. I confess to being both delighted by and terrified of the responsibility at such a young age. I went on to become Managing Director of Trade & Public Exhibitions a division of the Maxwell Group in 1987. In 1989 I joined Haymarket Publishing (UK) to create Haymarket Exhibitions and BBC Haymarket Exhibitions as Deputy Managing Director. This was an exciting period in which I launched a variety of consumer events in association with a number of highly

successful BBC TV programmes. In 1994 I was headhunted to set up IIR Exhibitions

Middle East as Managing Director and by 1996 I became Managing Director, Middle East & Far East. By 1997 I became Global Managing Director for IIR Exhibitions and Regional Managing Director Conferences for Middle East & Eastern Europe operating 16 offices. Just when everything was going well ……I stunned my wife by resigning to launch my own business.

I set up Epoc International with a business partner and close friend Michael el Nayal in 1998 launching 12 trade fairs. We sold the business to Frankfurt Exhibition centre in 2005 to establish Messe Frankfurt Middle East.

In 2006 I opened a new events business by myself called Mecom Forums and promptly sold my first two events to IIR/Informa after just one year of operating. I launched a few more shows and then in 2009 I sold Mecom Forums to Clarion Events to create their Middle East division. In September 2010 I was delighted to join dmg Events.

I live in Dubai quite near the office in Emirates Hills. My wife is called Ruth and we have been married for nearly 29 years and together for over 30 years. I have two children, a son called David who will soon be 11 and a daughter called Mirna who will be 10 in a few more months. I love football and support an English team called Manchester United. I am keen on sport as some of you will have noticed from the pictures in my office, and I also collect art. I enjoy outdoor pursuits and over the years have done a lot of scuba diving, sailing. skiing and trail riding on horseback.

What have we been up to?New Policies - Whilst I know policies are about as exciting

as watching paint dry they are necessary to ensure that the processes and practices we use are fair and consistent. Please ensure that you have read them as I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble for not following them.

Jumpstart – We took time to survey some of our new starters and ask them for feedback regarding our induction program. Using their feedback we have designed a new presentation and employee handbook which you all have access to. We have also put together a ‘Relocating to the UAE’ guide book for any potential candidates that are considering relocating here. As you will all know moving to a new country is not easy so we want to help as much as possible. If you know of anyone wishing to relocate to the UAE please feel free to send it to them.

Have a look they’re all in the general drive in the HR folder.

Open Exchange – By now you should have all had a review with your Line Manager unless you’re in your probationary period regarding your performance throughout 2010. I hope you found your session useful and are all working towards the objectives that were set. If you haven’t been set any objectives please speak to your Line Manager and arrange a time to agree them.

Talent Boost – We have had lots of interest in the workshop calendar. The first internal workshop, ‘Marketing and Communications’, was held on 9th February 2011. It was facilitated by Nick Pomeroy and was a great success.

For 2011 we have 90 days of internal training courses already booked, an increase of 79 days on 2009 and 2010 combined!!!

Don’t miss out get yourself booked on.

We are using all of the Talent Boost forms that you submitted to look at other Learning and Development opportunities for 2011. Unfortunately this review has been delayed as not all forms were submitted on time. Maybe we’ll run a course on time management for those people!

We have also enrolled two individuals onto professional qualifications relevant to their field of expertise which is a first for DMG Middle East. Premila will be working towards a Diploma in Human Resource Practice accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development and Amanda will be working towards the Chartered Institute of Management Accounts qualification. Wish them luck.

Talent Quest - Thanks to the Recommend a Friend Scheme we are receiving some great CV’s. As agreed all vacancies will be advertised internally from now on. If you see a role that you want to apply for speak to your Line Manager and, as long as you have been employed in your current role for at least 12 months, your application will be considered.

‘Your suggestion’ sessions – Thank you for participating in the sessions. I hope you found them useful, even if I did have to drag some of you away from your desks to participate.

We have lots of ideas that we now need to work through from having more semi skimmed milk in the fridge, more printers, and more social events to Health and Safety, career development, and how to propose new business ideas and launches. We will let you know what we will be doing with all the ideas in a few weeks.

HR is not well known for being the most exciting function in the world. Saying ‘‘no’’ and ‘‘that’s inappropriate’’ are staples in our vocabulary but we have been doing some interesting things lately, I appreciate this depends on your definition of interesting! I hope that you are noticing a positive change within the business.

I joined in mid September 2010 and I have not yet even completed five months, but, somehow it seems longer. It does not seem longer because time has dragged, if anything it has flown by. It

seems longer because so much has happened in the last five months which is a testament to all your hard work and enthusiasm.

I count myself very lucky to have been given the opportunity to head up in the Middle East. It is both a rare and a wonderful opportunity to work with such a strong portfolio of major brand name events and a wonderful team of fun and talented people.

In my first few months of joining I witnessed the ADIPEC, INDEX and Big 5 teams execute three tremendous events. People gave up evenings and weekends in order to secure shows that we as a company can be justifiably proud of. The Oil Barons Ball team produced a superb evening, even persuading the brewing storm clouds to hold off. The Reflex team have worked hard to create a new and improved Pipeline magazine. Now in the lead up to Big 5 Saudi, Office, FM and Hotel I can again see the same level of commitment from teams striving to produce yet more first class events.

The Energy team are planning two new launch events for 2011 with ADIGAS and Middle East Refining. They are also looking at creating recruitment fairs and pioneering a new format for the Oil Barons Ball. The INDEX team has totally re-vamped the event for 2011 with a whole host of new ideas. INDEX 2012 has been given a total marketing makeover and will become a very design led show for the future. New sections have been added to the event to cover Kitchens & Bathrooms, Lighting, Outdoor Living & Home Textiles. I was very impressed by the new INDEX sales brochure which presents a fresh and exciting designer image for the event.

BIG 5 pioneered their successful Gaia (Green) awards in 2008 and these have gone from strength to strength and for 2011 these awards will be

complimented by a major international Green Conference with a headline speaker who will undoubtedly make this the region’s most influential construction programme. More news soon… With new event segments being introduced for this year such as Concrete you can be sure that BIG 5 will once again lead the way for building events in the Middle East

The Office team has pulled off a major coup for the May event by gaining the support of the highly influential International Interior Design Association (IIDA) from the USA. This has created increased brand profile for the event, a US pavilion of nearly 1000 sqm and the foundations for what promises to be a tremendous conference programme. FM has developed really well for its next edition by establishing BIFM certified training programmes that have proved popular and created new revenue for us as a company. The creation of the Sustainable Facilities Expo alongside FM will also take us in to the vogue green sector that will again increase our revenue earning opportunities.

The Hotel Show team has worked hard to diversify the content of the show moving it away from being mainly an interiors event and moving in to new sectors such as wellness and spas and security and technology. To support the development of the exhibit content they are working with the conference team to create an exciting innovation conference focusing on the latest tech for hotels.

Big 5 Saudi has been an outstanding launch having sold out well ahead of schedule thanks to the excellent and hard work of the team. This event will prove to be a major cornerstone in our regional expansion as we believe that we will launch at least four new events in to Saudi Arabia in the coming years.

The new conference and training team are now in place which is incredible considering the green light to launch this new division was only given in October last year. Programmes are already being researched and we will see the first few events taking place by May. This is an exciting new departure for dmg Events Middle East that will add intellectual content and value to our exhibitions as well as lead us in to new topic areas that will help the company grow and develop in the coming years.

The IT department is working on a number of new initiatives that will see improved internet, greater back up security, more features for Sales Force and a whole host of other projects that will greatly enhance our IT capabilities by the end of 2011.

Marketing are working on creating our own database team and vastly enhanced data capabilities as well as looking to greatly enhance our web presence and social networking opportunities.

The operations team did an outstanding job dealing with three large and complex events all in one month in November. They are working with our key contractors such as Melville to make sure that we will provide the best and most advanced solutions for our exhibitors in the coming years.

Finance work tirelessly to improve our report systems, providing better and better information, supporting the investment that we need to develop the business. The Finance team also support a number of other key functions of the business such as performing the company secretary role in looking at all our contractual agreements and obligations, protecting our trademarks and renewing our office leases and licences. HR is playing a key role in helping the business attracting the very best people to dmg. They are working on new concepts to develop our talent for the good of the business, providing opportunities for all of us with career development. HR are masterminding new clear policies, excellent reports and investigating leading training programmes adding to our skill sets.

The Sports & Social Club did a wonderful job with the company party in January and they will be looking to put on some more fun activities in 2011. To once again express our thanks and to encourage your views at the forthcoming company conference and barbecue this April.

There is so much going on in the company at present that it is incredibly hard to summarise it all, but, it is only happening because of all your hard work, enthusiasm and creativity ……..so all I can say is……THANK YOU.

Our capabilities to increase and develop data will be significantly

enhanced by end 2011 which will enable us to increase our event visitor numbers

Conferences & Training (or C&T for short) has only recently been established. The division started in November 2010 and absorbed the incumbent

Conference Producer, Riad Mannan, who was then employed by Big 5 to produce the Construction Conference alongside the exhibition.

To support Riad with selling the Big 5 conference, Ismail Abdirahman was added. Ismail now looks after the telesales of the events C&T is involved in.

I joined on the start date of Big 5 2010 and my task is to look after the overall management of the division.

Radha Manogaran became part of the team just before the staff party and is responsible for marketing our conferences and training events. Saudin Dungog-Noddings and Sarah Phillips joined a week later to take on the production requirements of the different shows. Currently Saudin is working on the Hotel Show conference and Sarah is doing preparatory work for the Big 5 Conference in November 2011. Riad is currently involved with the World FM Congress. So the team currently consists of 6 team members who have a collective 45

years of conferencing experience!

The core of the team have previously worked with all major international conference organisers and are bringing a very diverse knowledge and skills base with them. Together we are looking at building a successful conference portfolio next to our existing and future exhibitions but also developing stand alone conferences and training courses where possible.

We can take over the full management of a conference or training including topic validation, programme development, speaker identification and acquisition, liaison with professional associations if necessary, marketing assistance, sponsorship lead generation, event logistics and running the conference on the day.

We can also maximise revenues by adding value-add workshops to any event. In case we would not be directly involved with a show we are always available for advice and provide information when needed. We are temporarily based in the newly opened section behind the Index team, next to Majella’s cubicle but we will move across to office 510 once the refurbishment is finished.

We look forward to working with you.

Dear Sports and Socialites, Firstly I’d like to say a big hello to the recent additions to the dmg::events family. It was great to see so many new faces at the recent Festive Party at the Trade Centre Club in January. Hopefully you used the opportunity to make friends with your fellow dmg’ers. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the event to make it such a success.

From the feedback, and the impressive dance moves on the night, it seems you all enjoyed the evening. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who made such an effort by dressing up, following the black white and red theme. What a fine looking bunch you are.

The night was full of winners starting with the quiz teams, thank you to Simon, Mike, Nick, Matt and Barth for writing and hosting the rounds. From Music to UAE knowledge, our five hosts led our top three teams to victory. The prizes ranged from stays in 5 star hotels……to USB pens!

1st place: Hifazat Ahmad, Rosalie Jaliel, Angela Butler, Karen Taylor Sarah Philips

2nd place: Kamil Roxas, Patrick Gedeon, Matt Denton, Robyn Sokol 3rd place: Sunita Khatri, Simon Mellor, Salman Abou Hamzeh, Michaella Black

After flexing our grey matter it was back to the beautiful, as our ‘best dressed’ were announced to come to the stage to collect their prize of a DVD player .

Best Dressed Female: Michaella Black Best dressed Male: Muhammed Kazi

After that your hosts for the evening Mr Mellor and the blonde with the microphone surgically attached to her hand announced the spot prizes. Randomly selected, the portfolio of prizes from dmg and our generous suppliers, meant that quite a few of you left as prize winners.

Our last award as voted by you, was a very special award of recognition. Nithya Joseph won, taking home a gorgeous notebook for all of her hard work. The evening rounded up with some impressive dance floor action, unearthing John Travolta’s that we never knew we had amongst our ranks.

For those of you who are new and unsure of what the Sports and Social club are all about, in a nutshell we are here for you. Set up in 2010 to organise the social side of being at dmg::events, our aim is to plan, host and execute staff social events. Being mindful of our show dates, the plan is to do this once every few months.

Having been run on reduced people power the last six months, the committee hasn’t been able to plan a schedule for 2011. I am pleased to announce that a restructure of the team recently took place with Sangeeta, Tim, Emily and Carol joining the crew. Mabrook!Over the next couple of weeks I will announce a small event in March. Watch this space.

In the meantime, if you have any feedback for the committee, an idea for an event or would like to enquire about being a part of the team, please email our snazzy new email address:

Cheers!

TEAM DAY

After a day of conference in the Jebel Ali Resort the ADIPEC team were treated to a day of celebration for the hard work and success of the 2010 event.

The glorious sunny day was perfect for our first trip up in the Seawings sea plane, which took us all the way down the cost of Dubai and back up inland.

The views of the 3 different palms showed how work has halted on Jebel Ali and Deira, and ‘The World’ is inhabited by one solitary palace in the distance. It is amazing how Dubai has sprung up with such speed in such a short space of time (tongue twister?).

The ladies made light work of the shooting back at Jebel Ali, with our resident Palestinian coming out on top. Competition was fierce between the boys but Ahmad showed the rest who had the winning shot. Not smug at all.

The afternoon was spent lounging on a luxury yacht sailing around the Palm Jumeirah to the Burj - that is the life.

A great way to end a great event.

TEAM DAYIn recognition of a successful Big 5 2010, the team celebrations moved from the sea to the slopes and finally to the bar.

Meeting at the beach on a cold Tuesday morning, the team boarded three boats for a morning’s fishing with fish being caught from the start. In fact over 50 fish were caught in total with Mark Goodchild landing a sizeable red snapper and Rosalie, Faye, Michelle, Sarah and Nicci netting the catch of the day, a huge hamour weighing in at whopping 20 plus pounds (apparently).

Action then moved to the slopes – well Ski Dubai, where Simon and Salman demonstrated their skills on the white stuff and set the bar for the rest of the team, many of whom were skiing for the first time.

Fortunately everyone survived and there were no broken bones, although Samer was convinced he’d got frostbite!

In December, the INDEX team had a day out to celebrate all the hard work they had put into delivering the 2010 show.

The day kicked off at the Kartdrome, Dubai Autodrome which was an ideal venue for the team to show off their driving skills and in some cases bumper car skills! as they competed in a series of kart races.

After a rather tiring but thoroughly enjoyable race at the Kartdrome, everyone met up at the Dubai Yacht Club to end the day on a relaxing boat ride along the coast of Dubai.

But the iPad offers so much more, especially in our industry. I don’t claim much original thought here and a simple online search will reveal a host of uses for the iPad in the events market. Of course it’s not just the iPad, Samsung were next to market with their Galaxy Tab and a review of the annual CES show in Vegas shows many, many more arriving in the coming months.

The iPad and its clones all have one thing in common - compared to smart-phones the larger screen size opens up a wealth of opportunities. They allow unrivalled access to current information and media-rich content in a portable format and this is the key to their application for organisers, exhibitors, visitors and others in our industry.

Below is just a sample of the opportunities they present:

For ExhibitorsCapturing contact data is key at any

trade show. The days of entering piles of business cards and deciphering scribbled notes are gone. The iPad should also spell the end of the barcode and barcode scanner and make capturing contact data easier whilst enriching the experience.

With its live connection to the internet a simple downloadable App would allow exhibitors to enter the contact’s unique reference number and download all their contact data from the registration database. In turn the App could link to their own CRM system or build their own database adding specific information such as areas

of interest and follow-up requirements. With one such data source contacts and requirements would not be lost and replies and information could even be sent out immediately, all from within the same App.

For OrganisersWith everyone’s attention turning to

environmental issues the need for traditional printed exhibition guides is being questioned –not only that, they are also expensive to print and distribute and date as soon as they are printed. Similar issues arise with floorplans – albeit informative have you seen how unwieldy a Big 5 plan is!

Interactive guides and plans with links and enriched data are the way forward. Where you have a large show with stands and topics spread across a number of halls, the iPad may be the solution to provide a much more convenient and efficient way of navigating the Halls. In real-time visitors could download interactive guides and plans to search for and easily locate products, theatres sessions and exhibitors. Add in the GPS function and they could even map their steps and find the easiest route around the show.

For ConferencesFor conference organizers programs

go out of date as soon as they are printed, with an iPad the conference program, links for speaker biographies, podcast previews, topics, etc can all be updated and to hand instantly - before, during and after the event.

iPads could also make a conference more interactive, with delegates logging into a session forum giving feedback, voting, entering Q&A or commenting during the session – (this leads on to a discussion about hybrid events, but that’s another topic!)

The green issue raises its head again with the mountain of paper handouts and conference notes disappearing from our events, but with the use of pdf’s and annotation software delegates can still get all their information and makes their notes whilst saving the planet!

For ResearchThis almost goes without saying -

already commonplace at shows, iPads are perfectly suited to the research and survey community. They allow efficient capture and collation of data in and around the show.

These are just some examples of the opportunities already offered by the iPad revolution and the genre is still young with the technologies developing at breakneck speed. But there should also be words of caution. Clones coming to market may mean platform compatibility will become an issue and of course it will be many years before the majority of visitors attending a show will come armed with their tablets, so traditional activities will also need to run in parallel.

For now my iPad is still resident on the coffee table, feeling a little like the large iPod Touch Steve Jobs never meant it to be and maybe feeling a little threatened by news of the imminent iPad2…

iPad, tool or toy?Bought on a whim last summer (and officially launched in the UAE just last week) after the initial euphoria my latest must-have gadget mainly gathers dust. Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and the like have provided periods of use and of the course it is often called into action to settle arguments debate with a wikipedia look up to two. This I fear is the life for many a domestic iPad.

I was going to write a ‘Best of...’ feature for different types of food available in Abu Dhabi, but quite

frankly there was too much choice, so here are my Top 10 restaurants in Abu Dhabi. I can thoroughly recommend all of them, having once been an Abu Dhabian myself.

Chamas – Fun, Argentinean churrascaria with live mariachi band. The serving style provides an experience like no other; flick a card from green to red when you want more food and waiters circle in turns, slicing hunks off huge skewers of moist, seasoned meats complimented by a gigantic salad bar. Not recommended for vegetarians.

Finz – Abu Dhabi’s version of Pier Chic with a stilted restaurant and veranda at the Beach Rotana - ok the view isn’t so great now with Reem Island being built exactly opposite, but the whole-baked salted sea bass makes it worth the trip.

Rodeo Grill – Another one at the Rotana, this steakhouse feels more like a cigar bar and the comfy high backed leather seats and banquets entice you to while away an evening while enjoying the best quality steaks in Abu Dhabi.

Bam-Bu – Low down and dirty Chinese with plastic chairs, exhibition carpeting (to make you feel at home) and waiters who shout over your head, but you can’t complain at the 180AED for all you can eat and drink – and this is no buffet, you still choose your dishes from the menu and they are cooked freshly on ordering. AD Marine Club

Hakkasan – the new and super slick Asian restaurant in the Emirates Palace matches the version on London’s Tottenham Court Road. The Hakka cocktail is a must and the wagyu beef ribs are melt in the mouth. Private rooms over-looking the sectioned dining area remind me of something from Memoirs of a Geisha.

Wasabi – An Abu Dhabi secret, but I will let you in on the best Japanese in town. The private booths with sliding screens, the most delicious soft shell crab, platters of super fresh sashimi and sushi, this is a winner

for those cosy dinners a deux or for large groups in the private low cushioned seating areas.

Frankie’s – Don’t begin to think about comparing it with the one in Dubai. This one is a completely different kettle of fish. A jazz fanatic on the piano, lively bar, outside secluded bar area with a whole wall of cascading water and yummy Italian fare – too much to resist. I never liked aubergine before eating their stuffed version – delicious!

Al Fanar – One with the wow factor, this revolving formal French restaurant gives a bird’s eye view of downtown Abu Dhabi – just don’t leave your handbag on the side as it will soon disappear to the next table. Their champagne brunches are really good value too (every brunch in Abu Dhabi is, in comparison to Dubai) with a huge seafood selection and the best roast with all the trimmings.

Bord Eau – It is the leader in the gastronomic extravaganza that is Gourmet Abu Dhabi - and justly so. Its terrace has one of the best views in Abu Dhabi at the Shangri-La overlooking the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Silky mashed potatoes with truffle sauce and a masterful lobster thermidor, amongst other indulgent dishes make up for the heavy price tag. One to get the parents to take you to.

Vasco’s – Ignore the brasserie style interior and head straight out to the terrace overlooking the corniche, where you can while away an afternoon over lunch. One of the oldest and nicest relaxed restaurants with a menu to keep everyone happy, including everything from pizza to tagine. (And if you can book in time, the perfect place to watch the Abu Dhabi Red Bull Air Race.)

And one last contender.... The Royal Vegetarian on the back street behind Hamdan. At 4Dhs per dosa you can’t go far wrong.

Instead of the usual horoscopes I thought with the Chinese New Year having just passed we should celebrate the 12 animals that represent us all....

In Chinese Horoscopes 2011 is The Year of the Rabbit, which starts on 03 February 2011 and ends on 22 January 2012.

Chinese Astrological Signs use the lunar calendar and the Chinese New Year falls somewhere between late January and mid-February. Each year is named after the Chinese Horoscope Symbols, which are twelve animals that follow one another in a specific order, which is repeated over twelve years.

These Chinese Astrological signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. As with western Astrology, each of the Chinese horoscope animals has a particular character and qualities. People born in a specific year are believed to take on the qualities and character of the animal after which the year is named.

The Rabbit is the fourth sign in the Chinese Horoscope and signifies calm, diplomacy, creativity, sensitivity and consideration for others. Preferring the company of others Rabbits are friendly and

outgoing. If you were born in these years, you are a Rabbit: 1903, 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011

Rats are said to be imaginative, charming and very generous to those they love - although they do have a tendency to be quick-tempered and over-critical. They are supposed to make good writers, critics and publicists.

Oxen are born leaders, inspiring confidence in everyone they come into contact with. However, they can be too demanding. Methodical and good with their hands, they make fine surgeons and hairdressers.

Abu Dhabi employee: Hifazat AhmadTigers are said to be bold and

adventurous, and are bestowed with initiative and charm. However, they have a tendency to be risk takers, making them act before they think about the consequences. They tend to make good bosses, explorers or racing drivers.

Abu Dhabi employee: Jo Ferguson Rabbits are affectionate, co-operative

and pleasant, with lots of friends. But they can get too sentimental and seem superficial. Ideal careers areas include law, diplomacy or the stage.

Abu Dhabi employees: Simon Mellor, Ahmed Jamal and Peter Braham

Dragons tend to be popular individuals who are always full of life and enthusiasm, with a reputation for being fun-loving. They make good priests, artists and politicians.

Abu Dhabi employee: Jenny MoorePeople born in the year of the Snake

are romantic and deep-thinking, wise and charming, although they tend to dismiss others too quickly and are a bit stingy with money. Ideal jobs include teaching or psychiatry.

If you are born in the Year of the Horse then you are amazingly hard working and very independent. Although you are intelligent and friendly, you can sometimes be a bit selfish. Careerwise you would make a good scientist or poet.

Those born in the Year of the Sheep are said to be charming, elegant and artistic, who like material comforts. A bit of a worrier they also have a tendency to complain about things. Jobs as actors, gardeners or beachcombers would suit.

If you are born in the Year of the Monkey, you are very intelligent, well-liked by everyone, and will have success in any field you choose. Lucky old you!

Abu Dhabi employees who are monkeys: Cecil Jacob, Hanadi Aliwat

The sign of the Rooster indicates a person who is hard-working and definite about their decisions. Roosters are not afraid to speak their minds and can therefore sometimes come across as boastful. They make good restaurant owners and world travellers.

Dogs are honest and faithful to those they love but they tend to worry too much and find fault with others. They make ideal secret agents or business people.

Abu Dhabi employee who is a ‘dawg’: Abu Bakar

People born in the Year of the Boar are honest and tolerant and make good friends, but tend to expect the same from everyone else, and more often than not they end up disappointed. They thrive in the arts as entertainers.
