They were sentenced the same day, Killick and Martin for 30 years with a minimum of 20 and Cruise for 30 with a minimum of 15. Cruise was also sentenced for 11 years for GBH with intent to run concurrently. Killick, who runs a horse and al- paca transport company, from Emms Lane, Brooks Green, Martin, an al- paca farmer, and Cruise, a casual la- bourer, both British nationals living in Plouray in the Brittany region of France, were arrested in the days and weeks after Susan was horrifically at- tacked. He then at- tacked her with a plant pot, screw- driver and tried to use a stun gun on her. The then 61-year-old victim still managed to fight him off and stopped him from hitting her over the head with a heavy step stall. Cruise then dragged her across the kitchen before trying to stab her, first with a blunt bread knife and then with a paring knife. It was only when Cruise be- came very short of breath, having suffered a medical episode that she was able to get away from him, alert- ing her next door neighbours. Her quick thinking neighbour was able to take down part of Cruise’s French number plate and he was ar- rested in Portsmouth that evening. Cruise pleaded guilty to GBH with intent. Killick had made arrangements to ensure he was not at the address when the attacked occurred and to provide him with a legitimate alibi. The jury heard how he had sent texts to Martin asking how much to get rid of someone but always main- tained the £10,000 transferred to Martin just days before the attack was for an alpaca for his and Susan’s 30th wedding anniversary. The jury took just two days to find all three men guilty. On sentencing them Judge Michael Lawson said: “This was a horrific of- fence born out of greed and lust. Three men have each been jailed for 30 years having been found guilty of con-spiring to kill a woman in Horsham in February.

Bruce Killick, 63, Graham Martin, 39, and Karl Cruise, 55, have been found guilty after a fi ve week trial at Hove Crown Court for planning to kill Bruce’s wife, Susan, on February 18, at their home in Brooks Green, near Horsham.

They were sentenced the same day, Killick and Martin for 30 years with a minimum of 20 and Cruise for 30 with a minimum of 15. Cruise was also sentenced for 11 years for GBH with intent to run concurrently.

Killick, who runs a horse and al-paca transport company, from Emms Lane, Brooks Green, Martin, an al-paca farmer, and Cruise, a casual la-bourer, both British nationals living in Plouray in the Brittany region of France, were arrested in the days and weeks after Susan was horrifi cally at-tacked.

However, as the investigation pro-gressed, detectives found evidence to suggest Killick, who was having an aff air with his groom, Angie Teear, had hired Cruise, through his work associate, Martin, to kill his wife.

On the afternoon of February 18, Susan had been home alone in Emms Lane when she had answered the door to Cruise, who claimed his car

had broken down. He asked to use her phone to contact a garage but fol-lowed her into her kitchen where he then began his attack.

He fi rst hit her with a hammer and then punched her, knocking her to the ground and smashed her head repeatedly on the fl oor. He then at-tacked her with a plant pot, screw-driver and tried to use a stun gun on her. The then 61-year-old victim still managed to fi ght him off and stopped him from hitting her over the head with a heavy step stall. Cruise then dragged her across the kitchen before trying to stab her, fi rst with a blunt bread knife and then with a paring knife. It was only when Cruise be-came very short of breath, having suff ered a medical episode that she was able to get away from him, alert-ing her next door neighbours.

Her quick thinking neighbour was able to take down part of Cruise’s French number plate and he was ar-rested in Portsmouth that evening. Cruise pleaded guilty to GBH with intent.

Killick had made arrangements to ensure he was not at the address when the attacked occurred and to provide him with a legitimate alibi.

The jury heard how he had sent texts to Martin asking how much to get rid of someone but always main-tained the £10,000 transferred to Martin just days before the attack was

for an alpaca for his and Susan’s 30th wedding anniversary.

The jury took just two days to fi nd all three men guilty.

On sentencing them Judge Michael Lawson said: “This was a horrifi c of-fence born out of greed and lust. The victim thought this was a marriage of joy and this has been violated and de-stroyed for fi nancial gain.”

Detective Inspector David Springett said: “This was a planned and incred-ibly brutal attack against Mrs Killick, orchestrated by her husband and car-ried out by his criminal associates. I am sure that if it was not for her sus-tained self defence then Mrs Killick would not have survived this assault. Thankfully she has largely recovered physically but I have no doubt her emotional trauma will be long felt.

Police in Horsham are search-ing for a man they want to in-terview about two sexual as-saults in a local pub.

The suspect was the bar man-ager at the Plough and Attic Rooms pub in Rusper at the end of 2013 when he allegedly carried out the sexual assaults on two women who were members of staff there.

He has since left the pub and his whereabouts are unknown.

His full identity has not yet been confi rmed but he uses the names of Sukii Khan, Shafi que Miah and Shafi qul Islam and is believed to be about 40 years old. He is described as Bangladeshi,

5’6” to 5’8”, with short dark hair, clean shaven and of me-dium build.

Police believe he may be work-ing in fast food outlets in the Horsham area.

PC Dick Hemmings said; “Ex-tensive police enquiries have been carried out but so far we have not identifi ed him or traced him. Anyone who knows this man or knows where he may be now is asked to contact us via [email protected] or by calling 101, quoting se-rial 1632 of 11/4. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Present and Connect is a joint ex-hibition by two Sussex based art-ists inspired by the landscape of the South Downs National Park that opens this week at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. Adele Gib-son works in oils, Ruthien with a camera. The artwork in this exhi-bition stems from their experience of being present in the landscape and their deep connection with it.

Adele’s work is rooted in her ex-perience of being mindfully aware in the landscape and the total ab-sorption, peace and joy that it brings her. She makes studies outside in her sketchbook and then the fi n-ished paintings are completed in her studio. These can take several weeks to develop and start to take on a life of their own. The image that emerges sometimes fl ows from a deeper visual memory and can also incorporate inspiration from classi-cal music, including Mendelssohn and Elgar, and the work of contem-

porary poets like Wendell Berry. The works in this exhibition are painted using traditional techniques, in oils either on canvas or wooden panels.

After studying in Brighton, Ruthien has been a professional photographer for the past eight years. She creates textured collages of beauty, light and drama incor-porating photography, silkscreen techniques, painting and cutting edge digital imagery. Ruthien works both in digital and analogue, mix-ing the contemporary with the tra-ditional, the unorthodox with the conventional. The landscape stud-ies presented in this exhibition form part of a portfolio that also includes traditional black and white photography, wildlife surrealism and folklore inspired image and text fantasy stories.

Adele and Ruthien hope that visi-tors will enjoy these images, bring-ing both a sense of calm and a deep and timeless connection with the Sussex landscape.

‘Present and Connect – Contem-porary Landscapes in Oil and Photog-raphy’ opens on Saturday 8 Novem-ber 2014 and closes 3 January 2015.

More than 350 local people took on the Horsham Santa Run on Sun-day, November 16, to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice.

The St Catherine’s Hospice Hor-sham Santa Run took place at Hor-sham Park and was sponsored by Gatwick Group.

Families, friends, seasoned sprinters and casual runners look-ing for a different kind of challenge, donned Santa suits to race around the four kilometre route. Runners raised money and awareness for St Catherine’s Hospice, a charity which provides free end of life care for people in Horsham and across Sussex and Surrey.

Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “We couldn’t be happier with this year’s Santa Run. It will cost £180,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice to provide free, vital hospice care for local people when they need it most. Having over 350 Santas join us at Horsham Park with the aim of helping the charity is fantastic and it will be a huge help in raising the money that we need.”

Bob Toon, Managing Director of Gatwick Group, sponsors of the St

Catherine’s Hospice Santa Runs, said: “Many of our staff have had personal experience of the incred-ibly important work that the hos-pice does and we have sponsored the Santa Runs for two years now. The number of people who join in to show their support and help raise important funds is truly inspiring. That’s not to mention what an im-pressive sight it is to see so many santas running around the courses by themselves or with friends or family. It’s an honour to continue supporting St Catherine’s Hospice through sponsoring these events and we couldn’t be happier that this source of income is growing, with the addition of the new K2 venue”.

This is still a chance to take part in this year’s Santa Runs. The K2, Crawley and Queens Park, Cater-ham, events will take place next weekend and on-the-day entry is available at £15 for adults and £8 for underSaturday 22 November at 10am• K2 Leisure Centre, Crawley – 2k NEW VENUESunday 23 November at 10:30am• Queens Park, Caterham – 3k

When the bottle smashes against the side of the Britain’s biggest cruise ship next March,

P&O Cruises will be upholding its celebration of all things British by selecting sparkling wine from the Wiston Estate Winery in Stor-rington.

Four nebuchadnezzars of the quintessentially British winery’s Brut NV will be used for the naming ceremony itself while thousands of bottles of Brut NV and Rosé, Vin-tage 2011 will be enjoyed during the various in-augural events that are sched-uled to take place around the launch.

P&O Cruises called on its wine expert Olly Smith to help choose the perfect British sparkling wine to celebrate the launch of the biggest – and most glamorous – ship to be built for the UK market. Olly Smith commented: “I selected Wiston Es-tate to launch Britannia thanks to its impeccable quality and for its poise between modernity and tra-dition. Wiston stands for passion and pride as a technically master-ful English sparkling wine producer since 2006 with heritage as a farm-ing estate stretching back to 1743. But the main reason is because its bubbly is irresistibly delicious!”

P&O Cruises marketing direc-tor Christopher Edgington added: “When it came to selecting a wine for Britannia’s naming ceremony and inaugural season, we wanted to keep in with our British position-ing and select an English sparkling wine. The Wiston Estate Winery immediately stood out as a British brand with a proud history, very much in our own mould.”

The Wiston Estate Brut NV is a dry, medium-bodied Chardonnay/

Pinot blend combining delicate pri-mary fruits, zest and a characterful richness, while the award-winning Wiston Estate Rosé, Vintage 2011 is incredibly moreish and surprising for its structural precision and tex-tural finesse.

Pip, Harry and Richard Goring of the Wiston Estate said: “Our fam-ily has been the custodian of the

Wiston Estate in West Sussex for hundreds of years.

However, it is only re-cently that we have

realised our long-held dream to make sparkling wine here in the South Downs. We are delight-ed that Wiston Estate Brut has

been chosen to name Britannia

on the historic oc-casion of her launch

next March 2015.”Britannia’s maiden sea-

son will see the ship sail from Southampton to the Mediterra-nean, Norwegian Fjords, Canary Is-lands and the Baltic Sea, as well as offering a range of short breaks and a special round Britain cruise. The ship will then transfer to the Carib-bean for the winter season sailing a range of 15 night fly/cruise itinerar-ies from Barbados.

The Airports Commission has pro-duced a plan showing possible new flight paths if a new runway were to be built at Gatwick.

This has been unearthed by GACC from the mass of documents pub-lished last week.

Brendon Sewill, Chairman of GACC, commented: “The recent changes to flight paths are caus-ing widespread anger across West and East Sussex, Surrey and Kent. This new revelation will make peo-ple even more concerned. Everyone will have the opportunity to express their opposition at the GACC Pro-test Meeting this Saturday, Novem-ber 22, at the Apple Tree Centre, Ifield Avenue, Crawley where the doors will open at 1.00pm.”

GACC say: “Although the plans

are described as ‘illustrative’, cer-tain conclusions can be drawn. Air-craft departing from the existing runway are shown using the present flight paths, except that – to avoid flight paths crossing - none will use routes to the south. Thus the num-ber of aircraft using the present routes (except to the south) would roughly double.”

All aircraft departing from the new runway towards the west are shown as using two new flight paths, one over Warnham and North Horsham and one turning sharp left to fly over the eastern side of Horsham.

Brendon Sewill said: “This would be a double whammy for Horsham – one plane a minute over the town. Some people who have been keen to

support a new runway may now find they need to think again.”

Arriving aircraft are shown as taking two concentrated flight paths to the east and two to the west. Sewill said: “GACC has been pressing NATS (air traffic con-trol) to replace these concentrated routes by multiple routes but even so doubling the number of aircraft would ruin any remaining tranquil-lity in Ashdown Forest or the rural parts of West Sussex.”

In a consultation earlier this year NATS suggested that all ar-riving aircraft should be directed to ‘merge-points’, and the Airport Commission map shows a ‘merge-point’ in the vicinity of Haywards Heath.

New plan for possible Gatwick flightpaths revealed

Julie Walters presents card design prizesOn Tuesday, November 18, at the Capitol, multi BAFTA award win-ning actress Julie Walters pre-sented prizes to the winners of a Christmas card competition, or-ganised by The Samaritans Hor-sham and Collyer’s.Collyer’s Head of Art and Design, Susan McAlister, who helped organ-ise the competition, explained: “We asked all second year art students to submit a Christmas card design of their choice, with the winning im-ages to be sold in the Horsham area to raise money for The Samaritans Horsham.”

A panel of seven judges whittled down over 100 entries to a short-list of 30 designs. The judges then chose five designs to be sold as Christmas cards. Work created by students Lucy Boorman, Rachel Lee and Bel Tuckwell was chosen, while Noah Verbeeten was thrilled to have two designs selected.

Noah said: “I was really surprised to have my designs chosen! I want to study Fine Art at University, so this has been an amazing experi-ence,”

Julie Walters, who is Patron of Sa-maritans Horsham, presented the four winning students with a bag full of goodies.

Julie Walters said: “It is a pleas-ure to be here, and to see all of this amazing artwork displayed for such a great cause. The fact that The Sa-maritans exists gives me faith in humanity, in the way that they help

all those who are lonely or going through desperate times. It’s great to combine a fantastic charity with these gorgeous Christmas cards.”

Collyer’s Principal, Sally Brom-ley, said: ‘We at Collyer’s are so grateful for the work that The Sa-maritans do. Over the years I have seen an increase in the amount of young people, who find it hard to deal with the stress that comes with this part of their life.”

Sue Jago, Director of the Horsham and Crawley Samaritans, said: “I’m so excited about this event, which is bringing everyone together, show-casing amazing local talent from these young artists, as well as rais-ing money for The Samaritans.’

The winning Christmas cards will be sold over the Christmas period, at both The Horsham Museum in the Causeway, and The Capitol, Horsh-am. All profits raised from the cards will go to the Samaritans Horsham, situated at 21 Denne Road.

One of the most fascinating as-pects of diamonds is how old they are. It’s difficult to comprehend that your diamond, no matter how much it cost you, is at least one billion years old. It doesn’t just outdate the time span of humans.

The rock on your ring was here before the dinosaurs, before am-phibians, even before land plants. Your diamond dates back to the first signs of multicellular life on planet Earth. That’s if you’ve got one of the newer diamonds.

Diamonds were actually formed up to 3.2 billion years ago under intense heat and pressure when diamond-bearing ore was brought to the surface through volcanic eruption. After the magma cooled, it solidified into blue ground, or kimberlite, where precious rough diamonds are still found today.

I tried to convey the astonishing journey a diamond goes through at a recent get together of members of the Sakakini Diamond Club. The club is a great opportunity to pur-chase diamonds as an investment.

As I’ve written many times before, diamonds are judged on cut, carat, clarity and colour, and my advice is to look at diamonds at least one car-at in size. The bigger the stone, the higher the return could be.

If you are considering an invest-ment in diamonds, it’s important to find a friendly jeweller who is willing to deal with the public as a wholesaler. As an exclusive mem-ber of the RAPAPORT – the Interna-

tional Diamond Traders Association - I have access to all of the world’s diamonds at wholesale prices, and am the only jeweller in Horsham prepared to sell wholesale dia-monds to the general public.

The opportunity that diamonds are providing to secure your finan-cial future right now is as unique and exciting as choosing the dia-mond itself. Diamonds have worked harder than any ISA in recent years, offering great potential returns, and of course unlike an ISA there is no maximum investment limit.

Do visit the shop at 45 Carfax in Horsham if you’d like to know more about investing in diamonds. It’s an opportunity a billion years in the making.

The dancers had performed flash mobs around Gatwick Airport at the invitation of The Rotary Group of Horsham.

Both BBC London and Children In Need picked up on the videos of the flash mobs and the group were invited to perform on the night as part of the live broad-cast. Over 20 danc-ers went along to New Broadcasting House and per-formed a ‘Rueda de Casino’, a Cu-ban salsa style danced in pairs in a circle. Jon Riley who runs Horsham Salsa was briefly interviewed along with Susanna Rodriguez.

When the presenter then invited Jon and Susanna to ‘keep dancing’, Radio and TV legend Tony Black-burn came over and joined in the fun.

The dancers then joined Tony Blackburn at the end of that section of the evenings broadcast dancing a Conga onto the Pudsey bus.

The Gatwick Airport collection was held on Friday,October 31,by The Rotary Club of Horsham and supported by 27 different Rotary Clubs throughout Sussex and Sur-rey.

Dave Benson Phillips performed, a teddy bears picnic was arranged by Gatwick Airport for the children

and families from Chestnut tree House and flash dancers

performed in the arriv-als hall.

President Dave Smith said “the whole event has been a great suc-cess. Although the event was organ-ised and run by The Rotary Club of Hor-

sham it was sup-ported by many other

clubs from our Rotary District. Gatwick Airport

have been superb throughout and laid on a wonderful picnic in the North Terminal attended by chil-dren from Chestnut Tree House and their families. We have hopefully made many people aware of what Rotary is all about while raising some significant funds for the great annual BBC’s Children in Need ap-peal”.

Work will soon be complete at Impulse Leisure’s Chanctonbury centre in Storrington, West Sus-sex, which has undergone a full redevelopment.

The leisure centre will be offi-cially opened to the public at 7pm on Tuesday, December 2. A VIP tour will begin at 6pm with a special ap-pearance by Sally Gunnel OBE.

The extensive work has included building a brand new, extended fit-ness suite, which has been fully equipped by Technogym and in-cludes the functional training equipment, Kinesis. This links to a new changing village.

The new health suite includes a sauna and steam room, which is an interchangeable salt room. Salt rooms have been proven to relieve respiratory issues, improve skin conditions like eczema and acne,

and strengthen the immune system through the production of negative ions.

Customers can also relax after their workouts in the new-look Coffee Republic café and try out the new sports hall.

Jez Charlton, manager of Impulse Leisure Chanctonbury, said: “We are very excited about welcoming members and potential members to the new-look Chanctonbury on December 2.

“The work has been carried out successfully and we are looking forward to hearing our customers’ feedback on the changes.”

Lucky Horsham shoppers on Saturday, November 15, met Paddington Bear in Swan Walk, Horsham, who was in town support-

ing Action Medical Research. The Horsham based charity which

have played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs over the past 60 years, starting with the development of the first UK po-lio vaccine. Today they continue to fund vital research which helps improve the lives of sick babies and children across the UK.

With Paddington fever seemingly gripping Horsham, there are plenty of opportunities to find out more about the Peruvian bear and even the opportunity to view an exclusive screening of his brand new film.

Until December 31, Horsham Mu-seum are hosting a special exhibi-tion featuring memorabilia kindly donated by Michael Bond’s family.

Before being asked to join the judging panel for the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) 2014 south keg competition, I wasn’t entirely familiar with what it took to judge beer.

The competition which took place on Thursday, November 13, was held in order to decide the best craft beer in a keg. The overall champion of the southern heat will then go through to the national beer com-petition next spring.

The event was held at Tulleys farm and featured around 85 to 90

craft beers from various breweries across the south of England includ-ing West Sussex and the Horsham district.

There were three rounds of judg-ing held over fi ve tables and a fi nal round to decide the champion. Each round was judging various styles of beer including speciality beers, strong bitters and IPAs, dark ales, stouts and porters, and pale and golden lagers, brewery and beer names were withheld for the judg-ing.

The competition was a terrifi c opportunity to sample a huge num-ber of beers which showed a huge amount of creativity and crafts-manship from local brewers.

Each beer is judged on its appear-ance, aroma, fl avour, aftertaste and saleability, keeping these factors in

mind enabled me to really appreci-ate a lot of the fi ner details that go into brewing, and it also made for a great, if not somewhat hazy after-noon of tasting.

The competition was overseen by the chairman of SIBA, Guy Shep-herd, and the judging panel was made up of various industry profes-sionals, brewers and journalists.

The overall champion beer which won gold was the dark Equinox pro-duced by Glastonbury Ales, silver was awarded to Adnams for their Mosaic Pale Ale, and bronze was awarded to speciality beer Black Squirrel made by Red Squirrel Brewery Limited.

Sadly no Horsham winners this year, but hopefully next year we will see some more familiar local names.

10 am – 4pm Visiting the Horsham Twinning Association Stall at the Rotary Charity Market in the Carfax (everyone welcome)

A small piece of Sussex went to the City on Saturday, November 8. when 120 pupils in the Band from Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham participated in one of the world’s oldest and best-loved pageants, the Lord Mayor’s Show.

The Band performed their sig-nature piece ‘Sussex by the Sea’ as they marched through the City amongst half a million fl ag waving and cheering people who lined the route.

The Christ’s Hospital Band was fi rst invited to be part of this fa-mous procession in 1981 and so impressed the Lord Mayor that it has been invited to participate ever since.

At least four Old Blues (former pupils) have been Lord Mayor of the City of London, most recently Sir Richard Nichols in 1997. The in-coming Lord Mayor for the 2014/15 year of offi ce is Alderman Alan Yar-row who is a member of the Council of Almoners (Trustees) of Christ’s Hospital.

Following a series of suc-cessful fundraising events over the past year, QEII Special School in Horsh-am now have their own,

brand-new minibus in memory of former student Georgia Barnes, who sadly passed away in 2012.

Georgia’s family formed a com-mittee of friends and staff from QEII who spearheaded the eff ort to raise the £40,000 needed to pur-chase a suitably customised bus for the school. On Monday, November 10, 2014, the new bus was delivered to the school and presented to Head Teacher Lesley Dyer, in front of all the staff and students. The 17 seater customised minibus is bright red – Georgia’s favourite colour - and has been signwritten by SL2Signs of Horsham to refl ect both the school’s identity and some of her favourite activities. These include Lego and

threading beads, which have been incorporated in colours carefully chosen to match the school logo.

Georgia’s mother, Tracey Thorne, said “Now that we are able to hand the school a brand new bus in memory of Georgia it is like a dream fulfi lled for me and my family. We would like to thank all the people who have contributed and helped to make this come true for us.”

QEII’s Head Teacher Lesley Dyer said “We are excited to have our brand new minibus. Geor-gia was a very special student at QEII who loved trips out on our buses. Our pupils are all delighted with the bright red bus and can’t wait to make use of it. We are indebted to Tracey, her family and friends who worked so

hard to raise the funds for our much needed new bus.”

The events that raised the funds in-

2014 and an outdoor music festi-val in July 2014 at which Georgia’s sister Carly and cousin Fran raised over £12,000 with a sponsored head shave.

The Horsham District Wellbeing team are run-ning a series of events to support the ‘Movember’ campaign, and change

the face of men’s health through providing knowledge to aid pre-vention and early detection for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues.

It has been highlighted that men are at higher risk of developing dis-ease, by not openly discussing their health, reluctance in taking action because they don’t feel ill, engag-ing in higher risk activities which threaten their health, and due to the stigmas around certain health problems.

The statistics are alarming and should not be ignored. More men need to be aware and take control of their health, as men’s life expec-tancy is 4 years less than women, 1 in 4 will develop a mental health related illness each year, men have a 14% higher risk of develop-ing cancer than women and a 37% chance of dying from it, more than two thirds or 63% of men in the UK are obese, and deaths from poten-tially avoidable causes is account-able for approximately 24% of all

UK deaths. We along with the ‘Movember’

campaign want to get men to take control of their health by knowing their family history and any in-creased risk factors, being aware of their healthy body weight, staying active and aiming for recommend-ed exercise guidelines, developing strategies to manage stress, tak-ing action early, staying mentally healthy, not smoking and sticking to recommended healthy moder-ate drinking levels, getting enough good sleep, eating a healthy bal-anced diet, and being safe in the sun.

The Horsham District Wellbeing team offer a number of men spe-cific interventions as below:

Locals will soon be able to get in to the Christmas spirit with a festive train ride to the East Cambridgesh-ire city of Ely, behind steam.

On Tuesday, December 9, passen-gers can step aboard The Cathedrals Express at Horsham and be trans-ported back in time for a wonder-ful nostalgic steam journey to East Anglia, to visit one of the county’s most beautiful cities and take part in a special Cathedral carol service.

The Cathedrals Express steam train, hauled by two Black Five lo-comotives, will arrive at Ely at ap-proximately 1.30pm.

Passengers will have plenty of time to wander around the narrow winding streets of this picturesque city centre, before making their way to the Cathedral, with its stunning Octagon tower, for an exquisite for-ty minute carol service.

Afterwards passengers can sam-ple one of Ely’s famous tea rooms or enjoy a riverside walk, past the old-est and most beautiful parts of the city, before re-joining the train for the journey home.

The Steam Dreams Chairman, Marcus Robertson, said: “Our Christmas trips on board The Ca-thedrals Express are always very special. To be hauled, not by one, but two Black Five engines to this beau-

tiful city will be an unforgettable ex-perience for our passengers. With a chance to also enjoy a carol service in one of England’s fi nest cathedrals will be a very special pre-Christmas treat for the whole family.”

As always on The Cathedrals Express passengers have an op-portunity to travel in four classes ranging from Premium Standard at £99 where they are seated at ta-bles for four, with white tablecloths and complimentary tea and cof-fee at their seats, right up to Pull-man Style Dining at £239 per per-son where they enjoy a two course champagne breakfast or brunch and a fi ve course dinner on the return.

The carriages are all decorated for the festive season and all passen-gers will be served mulled wine and mince pies.

For this memorable journey The Cathedrals Express will also be picking up passengers along the route at Ockley, Holmwood, Dork-ing, Leatherhead, Cheam, West Brompton and Stratford (London) before heading on to Cambridge and Ely.

Anyone interested in travelling on The Cathedrals Express should call the booking offi ce on 01483 209888 or visit www.CathedralsEx-press.co.uk.

It may surprise many of you who follow the BBC that gardening still goes on into the dark months of winter. Come rain, snow, hail, sleet or indeed sun, I shall be out in a garden, tending to the plants.

You see, here’s the rub. In the garden, you get just four months of the year to actually do anything constructive. The rest of the year, you and I and the cat’s mother are just playing catch-up with nature. That is the simple truth.

There are also some beautiful winter gardens to visit too, such as Mottisfont in Hampshire, The Savill

Garden at Windsor Great Park or Wisley RHS Gardens.

I know it may also come as a shock to discover that Christmas is on the very near horizon. I know, I too hate the mere mention of Christmas until at least after St Brian’s Day on De-cember 10, but there is no stopping the modern marketing machine.

So, with that in mind, might I suggest you start looking at your garden as a primary source of mate-rials for a Christmas wreath?

Ilex with berries is always popu-lar (watch your fi ngers), as is Yew (poisonous), Dog wood stems, Salix stems and other colourful twigs that off er a structure. But you can experi-ment with other evergreen plants, as, after-all the wreath is a symbol of the Christian evergreen appeal – as op-posed to the pagan oak of the German god Wodin, which is where St Boni-

face did his thing all those years ago. However, please don’t steal or

damage other people’s shrubbery in your quest. Simple plans and in-structions can be found online and many craft shops sell the metal wreath ‘rings’.

If you can’t face making a wreath by yourself, I am told there are workshops taking place across Sus-sex; for example on November 27, Blossom Flowers will be organis-ing a workshop upstairs at B52’s in Horsham. Or there is the Rococo fl ower workshops in Chichester on December 13.

An alternative is to buy a beauti-ful wreath - remembering always to support local - made by one of our many fl orists across the Horsham District, examples being, Stems of Southwater, or The Clockhouse Flo-rist of Steyning.

For its conversations, information, and de-bates I truly appreciate the Horsham Facebook group (facebook.com/

horsham.uk) and yet I have come to feel uncomfortable in using Facebook as a medium for communication.

In general I no longer take part in answering Facebook’s need for me to feed it information about myself and what informa-tion I have passed remains pri-vate.

From time to time this ap-pears to be a cause of concern for some users that my comments and contributions must be ques-tioned since I apparently have something to hide.

The comments demonstrate many of the reasons as to why I fi nd public interactions online to be a source of continued amaze-ment. Consider this article at-tached in my name, my Twitter handle, and a rather dated photo since I no longer sport the goatee beard or own those glasses.

The assumption that because a name and photograph are at-tached the words in this article mean it’s verifi able and that these opinions are more sincere.

There is a constant, inaccu-rate, belief that forcing people to disclose their real names and

contribute photos of themselves will reduce fraudulent or bul-lying behavior. As if fraud and bullying are not real world is-sues which occur more than fre-quently offl ine and in person.

I post comments and replies as ‘Nicholas Butler’ without photo or Facebook content to hand and I fi nd many people have little is-sue in deciding upon the verac-ity of those statements. Which leads to the question just how do you defi ne that quality.

What defi nes someone as be-ing recognisably a member of the Horsham community in the real world as well as within the online.

As the group has grown and its numbers have almost certainly doubled I have noticed contribu-tions from a number of accounts whose authenticity is equally questionable. There is perhaps a new level of social skill and life experience that coming genera-tions will fi ne tune in their lan-guage and interactions.

An ability to identify genuine purpose from a contributors ac-tions in much the same way as we determine if an individual is more akin to a charlatan than a charitable asset. We have at our disposal an opportunity through online communication and real world actions to create a demon-stration of how to integrate the life of the Internet with commu-nity and business.

Actions may speak louder than words but words are all that Fa-cebook will ever be fi lled with.

Owen Day, a year eight student at Tanbridge House School in Hor-sham, experienced the ultimate dream for anyone with a sweet tooth on Wednesday, November 12, when he took on a managerial role at The Candy Box in Horsham as part of the school’s Ambassa-dors Programme.

The Ambassadors Programme, which has run since 2008, is de-signed to give young students a real ‘try before you buy’ experience with a one day placement at their dream employment following research in-dicated that 80% of people in the UK regret their career choices.

Owen, whose dream is to own his own sweet shop, worked alongside the owner of The Candy Box, Howard Bayliss, learning the tools of the trade thanks to a schedule full of deliveries, stock measuring, serving customers and of course, product sampling.

During the day, Owen was also able to ask Howard a host of ques-tions regarding the duties and daily running of owning a sweet shop.

The day was a complete success and after completing his placement student Owen was further deter-mined to become a professional

sweet shop owner once he finishes his education commenting: “I had a fantastic experience visiting The Candy Box and working alongside Howard for the day. I have wanted to own my very own sweet shop since I was little and so getting to see how the Candy Box works was a complete treat. I learned so much about running a sweet shop and the day really inspired me to open my own once I’m older!”

Howard Bayliss, Owner of The Candy Box, added: “Owen impressed us all with his natural skill for work-ing in The Candy Box and I am sure he will make an excellent sweet

shop owner once he is older. It was great to see so much enthusiasm in a young pupil and we are confident Owen will have his own successful business when he is older.”

Kirsty Mackay, Head of year eight at Tanbridge House School, also commented:

“It is clear that Owen had a fan-tastic time at The Candy Box. The Ambassadors Programme provides students with a great opportunity to work out if this is really the job that they want to do. We will definitely be encouraging our current year seven pupils to apply to take part in next year’s programme.”

Sweet working day for Tanbridge pupil Owen Day at The Candy Box, Horsham

HORSHAM!

The opening of the new Pandora concept store in Horsham last Satur-day caused great excite-ment. A queue of eager

shoppers stretched from the en-trance of the Swan Walk shop to the shopping centre’s doors on Carfax.

Right at the front was Sue Cox, who arrived at 8.30am, enticed by the offer of a free bracelet for the first 50 customers who spent over

£75. Sue said she would be buying charms to build her existing col-lection.

As the shutters went up, Dominic and Melanie Wakefield emerged. The brother and sister team, who head up 103-year-old Wakefields Jewellers in West Street, are be-hind the Pandora franchise, which is their second Pandora store. The first, in Brighton, opened in 2009 and has been very successful.

Their full team of Pandora staff,

including manager Helen Lewor-thy, held a luxurious pink ribbon across the entrance to the store, which was cut by Dominic, as Pan-dora Horsham was declared offi-cially open.

Immediately, the queue rushed inside, instantly filling the shop floor. Staff served Prosecco and cupcakes, while customers clutch-ing shopping lists made a beeline for the jewellery collections. Sue Cox was the first of many custom-

ers during a day in which the ex-cited buzz never wore off.

Store manager Helen said: “We had an amazing day. The store had a great reception, everyone loved it! And the staff thoroughly enjoyed being rushed off their feet serving the constant stream of customers.

“The people of Horsham cer-tainly love Pandora many of them had great stories about their jew-ellery collections, which are made up of meaningful pieces they have

bought to mark special moments in their lives.”

One of the shoppers, Corina Gib-son, posted on Facebook: “Lovely shop, great atmosphere and really professional staff. Fab!”

The store opening is timely, as the new Christmas Collection from Pandora has just been launched, with lots of jewellery gift ideas for fashionistas and devoted Pandora fans. The store is braced for a busy Christmas.

An exclusive extract from #1 bestselling author Dee Blick’s new book the Ultimate Guide to Writing and Marketing

a Bestselling Book on a Shoestring Budget – winner of The BookBag non-fi ction book of the month award.

Have you procrastinated about writing a book because your subject matter has already been covered? You’re lacking in confi dence, un-

sure of what you can bring to the table that’s new and that will cap-tivate readers.

These thoughts were on my mind when I was contemplating writing my fi rst marketing book, aimed at small businesses. A search on Ama-zon for ‘marketing books for small businesses’ yielded a whopping 2703 books. And a fair old number of these had been written by suc-cessful and respected authors. Once I’d got my head around the fact that I wanted to write a book on a very popular subject, I realised there was still room for me. I was determined to write a decent book that would draw on my decades of marketing experience with small businesses.

It really does not matter how many books have been written on your proposed subject. You can still sell thousands of books and take the number one spot from established authors just as I have done. Your experience is unique. It deserves to be shared so that readers can ben-efi t from it. So is your expertise! Nobody on this planet has your ex-pertise. You may have similar qual-ifi cations and training to other au-thors but your expertise is unique. It gives you diff erent, fresh and new insights to off er readers. Your client or contact base diff ers from other authors covering a similar subject. This gives you additional opportu-nities to enhance your book with

Why your book needs a big ideadee blickwww.themarketinggym.org

material and case studies that have not been shared in a book before. You have a unique writing style. Nobody in this world can write just like you. Many of your readers will be interested in buying your book because they have bought others on a similar theme and are keen to learn more. For many, their hunger will not be satisfi ed with just the one book. Do you buy just one book on a subject that interests you? Or do you explore other books within that genre too? I know from chat-ting to some of my readers that they don’t have just one small business marketing book on their bookshelf. They have several. Many folk will be on the lookout for the next best book on the subject you’re going to cover despite having one or indeed a shelf full of others.

Your book is going to bring something spe-cial and diff erent to the table because you are passionate about your subject and have a unique author voice. So what’s the big idea; the central premise your book will hang on?

For me, the big idea for my three marketing books was simple enough. I wanted to share prac-tical, eff ective mar-keting tips for small businesses, backed up by case studies with actual templates of work I had created for clients so that my readers could get re-sults from their mar-keting fast.

Having browsed books

online and spent many an afternoon in bookshops, it became clear to me that whilst there were many small business marketing books for sale I couldn’t fi nd one that encompassed my big idea. Many were light aero-plane reads—slender paperbacks with lots of gung ho talk but little by way of practical tips and templates. You could read one of these books on a plane or train in a few hours and forget most of the content afterwards. Some were complex books full of charts and diagrams with longwinded explanations on marketing theory. Books that I as a marketer might persevere with, but a small business owner would quickly become disenchanted with.

And so my big idea was to put my decades of marketing experience working with small businesses into a book. I wanted to demystify mar-

keting for small businesses. So, I would like you to write your big idea down when you’ve thought it through and are confi dent about it.

Don’t be concerned if you fi nd it hard to write. It may

take a little time before all becomes clear! But once

the seed has been sown in your mind, and you’ve mulled it over and written it down, you’ll feel more con-

fi dent about writing your book because you know you’re heading in the right direction.

Contact Dee at [email protected] if you would like to receive

the fi rst chapter of her new book free. Read the re-views on Amazon.co.uk. If there’s a book in you this is the book for you!

This winter lovers of the sixties and seventies are in for a treat as the Hawth offers up three nights of great music and nostalgia.

On Saturday, November 29 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm audiences can look forward to Sixties Gold featur-ing the ultimate line up including record breaking Merseybeat band The Pacemakers; the first act to reach number one and the first act ever to top the charts with their first three singles.

Controversial, po-nytailed P.J. Proby, whose trouser splitting shocked the nation, was a Melody Mak-er teen idol award winner in 1964 and spent 91 weeks in the charts. The Fortunes stormed the top 10 with You’ve Got Your Troubles, Here It Comes Again, Freedom Come Freedom Go, and Storm in a Teacup. Also Brian Poole and Chip Hawkes. On stage together, bringing you the greatest hits of The Tremeloes.

On Monday, December 8 at 7.45pm, the Hawth Studio hosts The Retros. The band are at an ex-citing point in their 30 year history, with a new album and single, and repeat appearances on vintage TV channels featuring both TOTP and Never Mind The Buzzcocks appear-

ances as The Banned. The Retros have played clas-

sic vintage tracks in their own way since they were kids. Hailed as New Wave rockers in the late 70’s their sound has continued to develop and despite being veterans of the music scene their performances still re-tain their youthful passion, wher-ever they play.

The band has always had great success playing live, and thrive on

the energy in the music. Nota-ble gigs include getting a

crowd of three thou-sand dancing in the

streets as part of the Jubilee cel-ebrations, fly-ing out to Hong Kong for a one-off gig, and re-cently appear-ing in a Cirque type extrava-

ganza for a 21st Birthday Bash. That’ll Be The

Day is back with a brand new Christmas

show for 2014 on Wednesday, December 17 at 7.30pm. Trevor and the gang celebrate the festive sea-son by bringing back the good times with all your favourite Christmas classics plus more hilarious comedy routines.

Sunday November 16 - Wom-en’s Conference East LeagueChelmsford Ladies 4 - 1 Hor-sham Ladies

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

After playing well against a top team in their previous match Horsham had high hopes of se-curing valuable points against the side one place above them, but lost comprehensively, their sixth successive defeat.

Chelmsford scored twice in the first half and added two more af-ter the break. Fran Crossley then reduced the deficit but that was Horsham’s sole success.

Fran told the District Post: “We all knew how important it was for us to do well in this game, perhaps that pressure over-whelmed us. The horrendous pitch didn’t help – it was cov-ered in algae which slowed down the ball. We’re not blaming that but it did give Chelmsford added home advantage. Conceding the early goals seemed to deflate us although we did have some probing attacks, but they came to nothing. We had good pos-session but only got two short corners. I was pleased to score, of course, but it was disappoint-ing to make a long fruitless jour-ney. We’re looking for a positive training session before we take on Bedford at Broadbridge Heath (tomorrow, Saturday) – we beat them in our first game of the season and need to repeat that result.”

Bedford are ninth, just below Horsham having lost their last two games.

Saturday November 15 – South League Premier Div. 2 Horsham Men 2 - 1 West Hamp-stead

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham dominated the first half with a bat-tery of short corners, running out worthy winners although the

game ended in stalemate. Fielding the same team as the previous two weeks Horsham attacked from the off and were rewarded after five minutes when Matt Hough con-verted the fourth short corner for his eighth goal of the season.

But, West Hampstead promptly equalised on the rebound from an uncleared save. Then Horsham had a goal disallowed before Jack Dean restored the lead in open play, both goal keepers subsequently pull-ing off quality saves. Post interval it was a different story with many hold ups in play, whistle happy um-pires sending off more than Royal Mail at Christmas and ordering the Hampstead coach from the dugout. Horsham did everything but score and noisy Hampstead had their moments but the second half was goal-less.

Horsham’s John Burroughs said: “They were lucky to only lose 2-1! We were all over them in the first half and could have been 5-1 up at the break.”

Team Manager Al Campbell add-ed: “A bad game but we pocketed three very useful points.” While captain Duncan Howarth told us: “We had some bobbley balls in front of goal and couldn’t knock them in – but we won!”

Henley, having played mostly

lower table teams remain top with seven wins from seven with Horsh-am third, behind Banbury. Tomor-row (Saturday) Horsham travel to basement Barnes who have conced-ed 44 goals – including losing 8-2, 9-3 and 10-1 – and are yet to secure a single point.

Storrington leapt to the top of the Division 2 table in Week 6 of the Horsham Central Table Ten-nis League with a 7-2 mauling of the previous leaders MMJ 4.

Keith Anderson added anoth-er three straight sets victories to his unbeaten record and the two youngsters in the team, son James and Alex Colenutt, pro-vided solid support with good doubles to peg back their more junior opponents. The only bar-rier to them gaining maximums was Jacob Evans who was MMJ 4’s one bright spark on an off night for the team.

Holbrook’s struggles contin-ued as they went down 8-1 to MMJ 5 for whom Annabelle Gold-smith and Chris Goodier maxi-

mums never looked in doubt. Pat Jeremy’s win over Lulu Lok was Holbrook’s only highlight.

MMJ 3 joined Storrington in joint top position courtesy of a 5-4 win over Horsham E. Luke Burgess and Alex Weston won two each and Harry Yip won one.

East Grinstead’s 8-1 demoli-tion of MMJ 1 saw them overtake Horsham A by two points at the top of Division 1 to set up a great Phase 1 finish next week when the two will meet head-to-head.

MMJ 2 added their second vic-tory by beating Horsham D 6-3 although Tom Danahay, David Smith and Alex Widdowson all lost out to Horsham D’s Andy Sinclair.

Ollie Giles was the star of the show in leading Horsham C with three wins to a 5-4 victory over Horsham B.

NetballDivision D of the Horsham Dis-

trict Primary Schools Netball League kicked off last week and provided the most closely contested meeting to date. Four teams – Northolmes, Castlewood A, St John’s and Leech-pool - finished on eight points as a result of achieving a win and a draw on the night, although St John’s and Leechpool gained their wins by de-fault as a consequence of St Robert Southwell’s late drop out.

Northolmes lead the pack by vir-tue of goal difference by following their 2 v 2 draw with St John’s with a 5-0 smashing of Castlewood B. Cas-tlewood A lie in second place after drawing with Leechpool and beat-ing their B team 3-1.

The matches took place on the 100 metres straight of the Broad-bridge Heath Leisure Centre sta-dium track after the multicourts were declared unusable due to bad weather and considering the chal-lenges of the unusual environment the children did well and enjoyed themselves. Full results and table

With virtually a complete cancel-lation of the weekends Junior Foot-ball fixtures due to water logged pitches one of the only matches to go ahead was played on a 4G surface. Horsham Sparrows U18 Girls made the long trek to Wealdstone to play their first ever game on a 4G sur-face. They took a while to get used to the artificial pitch by which time Wealdstone were 5 up. However in the second half the Sparrows got used to the extra bounce of the ball and made a comeback with 2 excel-lent goals from Amber, the second a towering header from a corner by Naomi. Billingshurst’s rise in the Horsh-am Primary Schools League A Divi-sion continued with a 7-1 win over a Leechpool team that put in a much improved performance. The margin was quite harsh on the Leechpoolers given that five of the eight matches went beyond three sets. Dan Harri-son won their sole point but it could have been better for them if Harri-son and Seb Wallace had won their

five set encounters.Struggling Jolesfield also played

better in their match with Shel-ley. Robert Sanders won his team’s first point in the division with an 11-9 in the fifth win over Josh But-tle but they could not add to this despite three other matches going beyond three sets. Jack Timms was Shelley’s star winning both of his matches by the margin of 11-8 in the deciding set.

At the top of the table it was no change as both Southwater and Holbrook recorded 7-1 wins against Kingslea and Greenway respective-ly. Southwater were imperious but Max Wright clearly did not read the script, the Kingslea No 1 preventing Southwater from recording another whitewash by beating Ben Cowland 3-0. Holbrook were also ruthless but Sasha O’Halloran ruined their hopes of perfection by beating Lew-is Chambers 3-1 to give indication of her potential.

Warnham’s emergence as a force was given further credence as they did manage the only full house of the evening, smashing through a weakened Heron Way team’s de-fences. Having occupied the bottom reaches of the table in the early part of the season Warnham now look realistic contenders for finishing in the top three.

Saturday November 15 - London 3 South EastFolkestone 5 – 10 Horsham

RugbyRichard Ordidge - HRUFC

Horsham won 10-5 away to Folkestone in a hard fought attritional bat-tle.

In what is shaping up to be one of the most tightly con-tested championships in years, the Green and Whites remain top of the table on point’s difference from Dartfordians. This was a much changed side due to injury, unavail-ability and last minute withdrawals.

Folkestone are renowned for their strength being a talented three quarter line and therefore it was a surprise for the spectators to see Horsham being dominated for the first time this season in the scrums and line outs. Particularly impres-sive were the Stones props, Tom Carvill and Alex Evans, making his debut.

From the Horsham perspective it was fortunate that Folkestone did not use their possession more wisely and indeed despite the home side’s superiority in the tight, the Green and Whites made better use of the ball with fewer mistakes but found the Folkestone defence diffi-cult to breakdown.

Despite having less set piece pos-session, Horsham dominated the territorial battle and it was from one of the few Folkestone incur-sions into the visitor’s 22 metre area that, on 25 minutes, Sean Tu-hakaraina made an interception and ran 80 metres to score under the posts to put Horsham into a 10-0 lead, which was converted by Will Bell. Bell had already slotted a penalty when Folkestone strayed offside.

On the stroke of halftime Ollie Walton crossed the line for a well worked try when Folkestone en-gineered an overlap to reduce the deficit to 10-5 and amazingly this was to be the last score of the game.

The second half was largely a stalemate with gaining first phase possession being a problem for Horsham but the defence held firm and whenever Folkestone put the

ball over the top, man of the match Will Bell was there to clear up and relieve the danger.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker was happy with the result if not the performance: “Despite the dominance they had at the set piece we fashioned a few openings but our com-posure let us down and we forced need-less offloads. We did some good ap-proach work going through several phases of play but then coughed up pos-session when we should have been more clinical. Considering they had more first phase possession, I felt that we had an element of control, and kept them pinned in their half. Our defensive structure was good,

and from memory the only clear cut opportunity they created was when they scored.

There are no excuses from the changes in personnel and I

thought that Will Bell’s positional play at full

back was outstand-ing.”

Saturday November 15 - London 3 South EastOld Dunstonians 24 - 21 Pul-borough

RugbyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Pulborough’s visit to Kent resulted in disappointment when they were left rueing a lost opportunity to notch up a much needed win.

Old Dunstonians opened with a penalty but then Dan Bullock and

Ollie Burnett scored tries for Bor-ough, converted by Tom Hoey. After the break Borough lost concentra-tion, allowing the hosts to get over the line twice with easy tries in quick succession, one of which was kicked over. Borough responded positively but had a seemingly cer-tain try disallowed by the referee who was not in a position to see clearly and they were subsequently unable to capitalise on any penal-ties awarded. Then, with the scores level, Old Dunstonians stole the

match with a late penalty. Team manager Roger Hunt said:

“This was a good game played in the best spirit but it was a very tough outcome for us – they didn’t win it, we lost it! It was encouraging to gain a bonus point but we’re still looking for our first away win. We are im-proving though; we just need to be more clinical.”

On Saturday November 22 Far-lington School will be represented for the first time at the English Schools Swimming Association National Finals that will be held at the Olympic Pool in London.

English schools from across the country, both state and independ-ent, competed in regional events throughout the autumn and the fi-nals include the fastest top 20 teams.

The Farlington squad includes only Year 9 girls - Lauren Pedel,

Lilly Cherriman, Gaby Eltham and Gemma Cumber - and they quali-fied as the 18th fastest team in Eng-land.

The team will compete in the Medley Relay in the intermediate category which is made up pupils from Year 9 and 10, so they will be able to compete in this category next year as well.

This is a fantastic achievement for the Farlington girls who are all part of the same squad at Atlantis and have recently returned from a training camp in Lanzarote during the October half-term break.

Newly crowned GP2 Champion Jolyon Palmer is aiming to end his GP2 career on a high, by helping his DAMS team secure the Team’s Championship at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit this weekend (No-vember 21-23).

Palmer secured the GP2 driv-ers’ title in the penultimate round at Sochi, Russia in October, with a superb drive to win the first race of the weekend, becoming the first British driver to secure the crown since Lewis Hamilton in 2006.

It has been a record breaking year for Palmer, who set the benchmark for most consecutive points finishes in a season (19) and the most points scored in a single season (256). The 23-year-old from Southwater has

also taken four race wins and seven additional podiums on his way to his dominant title success.

To cap an excellent season, his DAMS team needs to score just 27 points in Abu Dhabi to guarantee their title. A total of 78 points are available for a team each week-end, and DAMS would secure the title with a win and a fastest lap in the first race, or with a third and a fourth place.

Palmer commented “After a long break it’s good to be racing again in Abu Dhabi, my last ever race week-end in GP2. Having won the title last time out, the pressure is off for me but DAMS are still aiming to win the Team’s Championship this weekend.

“On a personal note I’d like to end my GP2 career with a win and end what has been an unbelievable year in the best possible way.”

Saturday November 15 - FA Trophy 2nd Qualifying RoundBarkingside 1 - 3 Horsham

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Despite falling behind in the ninth minute Horsham battled back and in the end eased comfortably past their

East London hosts and into the next round.

After the disappointing defeat to Worthing Tony Nwachukwu started after recovering from in-jury as did Gary Charman, Lewis Hamilton and new signing Samir Hadi, who had arrived from Ware during the week. Harry Smith was injured in the warm up forcing a late change that saw Ade Akande starting at the back and Charman moving up front.

The late reshuffle may have contributed to the Hornets shaky start that saw an early Barking-side corner headed wide by an un-marked Lewis Francis and Billy-Joe King clearing under pressure in front of goal. However from the resulting corner the Horsham defence remained sleeping al-lowing Matt Gulfer’s corner to go unchecked across the area where Barkingside’s Joe Ellul had the simple job of putting his team a goal up.

Horsham did not let the set

back of this early poor goal get to them and immediately lifted their game. Charman went close to lev-elling the scores when his goal bound header hit keeper Chris Clark and a few minutes later after a good run and cross from Nwachukwu the Hornets equal-ised. Keeper Clark spilled Nwa-chukwu’s cross under pressure from Charman allowing Jamie Ampleford to fire the ball through a crowd of players into the net.

From this point Horsham never looked back and took the game to their opponents, only very rarely coming under threat themselves from Barkingside. After Charman had missed a great chance to give his team the lead the travelling Horsham support, who made up half of the poor 97 attendance, would have been expecting to hear the half time whistle signal parity between the sides, Nwachukwu however had different thoughts.

With a minute of the half re-maining Nwachukwu rode three challenges leaving him facing keeper Clark whom he confident-ly beat to give the Hornets a de-served lead at the break.

Horsham came out for the sec-ond half full of confidence and the result from here on never re-ally looked in doubt. Ampleford and Charman had chances to add to the lead and Samir Hadi came agonisingly close to celebrating his debut with a goal when his free kick cannoned off the post

with the keeper well beaten. Hor-sham continued to press and were totally dominating, however at 2-1 the danger always was that a breakaway could lead to a goal for the home side, but when on 66 minutes the third and deserved goal did eventually come it was worth waiting for.

Hadi came away with the ball and found Ampleford who hit a superb shot across the goal and into the far top corner of Clark’s net to put the game safe.

Horsham did not sit back and had numerous further chances in the last 20 minutes where they could have, and probably should have, scored more. Hadi did have the ball in the net but was ruled offside, and then booked for time wasting, in what was an event-ful first match as a Hornet for the former Ware player.

This was a good cup victory for Horsham that comes with a much welcomed financial award but Horsham’s attention must now turn to tomorrow’s (Saturday 22) must win league match at South Park, who are seventh in the divi-sion 18 points above the Hornets.

Horsham’s reward for the vic-tory against Barkingside in the FA Trophy is a very tough away draw at Conference South side Hayes & Yeading who are man-aged by ex Liverpool and Republic of Ire-land defender Phil Babb.

Hayes and Yeading are in the process of having a new stadium built and currently ground share with Maidenhead FC, therefore the fix-ture will be played at Maidenhead’s York Road ground. The Hornet’s op-ponents are currently ninth in the Conference South and the match is due to be played over the weekend of November 29/30 but is highly likely to take place on Sunday No-

vember 30 as Hayes and Yeading’s hosts Maidenhead FC also have a home cup fixture over that week-end.

Horsham supporters can expe-rience a bit of football history by travelling to watch the match as

the York Road Stadium is recognised by FIFA to be

the oldest continu-ously used senior

association foot-ball ground in the world by the same club, hav-ing been home to Maidenhead FC since 1871.

Horsham coach Mark Hawthorne

writing on the club’s web site said that he

believes the pressure will all be on Hayes & Yeading

saying “Most clubs will tell you that they would have wanted a home tie but there will be no pressure on us to get a result because we’re not ex-pected to win.”

Tuesday November 18 - Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Round 2Horsham YMCA 2 – 0 East-bourne Town

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA booked their place in the third round of the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup with

a convincing 2-0 win over fel-low Sussex County League out-fi t Eastbourne Town on Tuesday evening.

YM striker Nick Sullivan bagged a brace as Peter Buckland’s side produced a superb display to comfortably brush aside the visi-tors, who are currently sat top of Division 1.

Boss Buckland commented: “I think that was probably our best performance this season. Obvi-ously Eastbourne Town are a good side. They are top of the league and going well and we made them look pretty average with our work

rate, passing, movement and control of the game. I could not fault a single player.”

The opening goal arrived mid-way through the fi rst half and it came courtesy of a trademark Sullivan fi nish. The YM striker looked back to his best as he latched onto a neat through ball and after holding off a last gasp Eastbourne at-tempt to bring him down in the box, poked the ball past the keep-er.

And it was the YM tal-isman who secured his side’s passage into the next round nine-teen minutes from time, when youngster Josh Brown slipped him in behind the Eastbourne defence, and he coolly fi nished to double both his and YM’s tally for the evening.

Buckland concluded: “It was great to have Nick [Sullivan]

back on track. It’s what we’ve been missing. My vision was to have Nick and Phil Gault playing alongside each other up top, and Gaulty still isn’t fi t, but when he

is, I can just see the pair of them getting us back to

where we were with our free goal scor-

ing.“I can’t say

anything other than I am over the moon really. I will sleep well tonight and then

I can look forward to Saturday, where

hopefully we can carry our good perfor-

mance into the FA Vase game against Erith & Belvedere.”

Saturday November 15 - Sussex County League Div 1Chichester City 0 – 0 Horsham YMCA

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA were held to a goalless Division 1 draw for the second time in three games, as they shared the points away at Chichester City last Saturday.

A scrappy encounter, played on a sticky, rain aff ected surface, en-sured a lack of free fl owing football, as neither side created enough clear cut chances to win the game.

A young Lillywhites side worked hard to stifl e YM’s usually penetra-tive play and perhaps had the better of the fi rst half, whilst Peter Buck-land’s side improved after the break and could have nicked a win from a fi xture that ended with the points fairly shared.

YM manager Buckland com-mented: “It was a bit scrappy. The lads were just saying how heavy the pitch was. I don’t think we appre-ciated quite how bad it was from

the touchline, but I think that both teams adapted well to it. I thought that it was a good 0-0 draw and a decent game to watch. They totally had the fi rst half and we totally had the second. The only disappoint-ment is that we didn’t nick a goal, win 1-0 and come away with all three points.

The second forty-fi ve minutes was really good, and it’s now seven games unbeaten. It’s also a clean sheet away from home and come the end of the season it might prove to be a well earned point.

“There were a couple of close shaves in the fi rst half, but other than that, I thought that we shut them out very well at the back. We just seem to be struggling a bit in front of goal. We’ve got Phil Gault and Nick Sullivan, who last season scored about seventy goals between them, but we’ve got to get them on the pitch together and match fi t, and neither of them are at the mo-ment.”

YM Team: Lockwood, D. Sullivan, Gathern, O’Carroll (Curtis 75), Ev-ans, Gedling, Dugdale, D. Brown, Hunter, Hibbert, Gault (J. Brown 65).

Saturday November 15 - Sussex County League Div 1Broadbridge Heath 0 - 2 East-bourne United

Eastbourne got off to a fl y-ing start after just 90 seconds when a Jason Taylor shot from 20 yards fl ew past Heath keeper James Fisher who was blinded by the low bright sun in his eyes.

Eastbourne then went on to dominate the early stages with Lucas Mann and Bailo Camara both having good chances and Taylor shooting just wide in what would have been a carbon copy of his fi rst goal. For Heath Ol-lie Moore headed a cross straight into the arms of the Eastbourne keeper Russ Tanner, Saz Bid-good had a shot over the bar, but Heaths best eff ort of the half fell to Moore, who swivelled in-side the area but his eff ort went just over the bar. Just before the break Taylor, who troubled the Heath defence throughout, found himself through on goal but Matt Carruthers made a vital intercep-

tion to deny the visitors a second goal.

Chances were few and far be-tween in the second period, early on Heath’s Jamie Wanstall header was comfortably saved and Taylor should once again have added a second but pulled his shot wide of the post.

With ten minutes remaining United wrapped up the points with a controversial goal.

Eastbourne’s Lucas Mann beat the off side trap and Fisher came sprinting off his line. The ball was knocked wide of the Heath keeper who turned to give chase and the United striker ran straight into him. The Match referee had no doubt about the decision and im-mediately pointed to the penalty spot, the Heath players and man-agement complained bitterly that Mann had deliberately run into Fisher but the referee shunned all the Heath protests. The Heath keeper Fisher received a yellow card and up stepped Wes Tate to send Fisher the wrong way as United made it three clean sheets in a row.

Heath Team: Fisher, Robinson, Bates (Wicking 75) Carruthers, Flack, Bidgood, McDermott (Bal-four 84) Wanstall (Legrange 73) Waddingham, Moore, Sultan.
