Peter Pan at The Hawth: All star cast announced

Horsham buzzed with a wide vari-ety of activities on Sunday.

Pride of place went to the hun-dreds of volunteers who took part in the Race for Life to raise money for the Cancer Research charity, hoping for a fi nal fund-raising tally of more than £100,000. Many were inspired by the memory of loved ones lost to cancer or currently fi ghting it.

A touch of the joie de vivre came from the busy French Market and Vintage Fayre, while the Plum Jam Classic VW Rally drew a lot of admirers.

People in the Race for Life pre-sented a brilliant spectacle as the runners entered the Carfax from their start point in Horsham Park and ran past the ranks of VWs, market stalls, onlookers and sup-porters.

Facilitated by Horsham District Council in partnership with Hor-sham Markets, Plum Jam Campers and Cancer Research, the council’s events team ensured that the day ran smoothly.

Cabinet Member for the Lo-cal Economy Cllr Gordon Lindsay said: “I was delighted to see these diff erent organisations working so well together with the council to pull off such a great event for the benefi t of both the many visitors and local businesses.”

PJ Aldred from Horsham Markets said : “The eclectic mix of a French market, English vintage market and German classic VW camper vans proved a real winner. All started off with a great run for such a brilliant cause. It was another fi ne example of how local organi-sations work so well together for Horsham.”

From the VW emerged three win-ners; Best Interior Design Award to the “orange bay window in East Street with all the retro bikes”, People’s Choice to “Rusty” with the red split screen in the Market Square and Best in Show Award to the white Beetle on the RSA bridge.

The town’s next big event will be Armed Forces Sunday on June 26.

Students prepared for Rio with a mini Olympics of their own.

Farlington School’s Prep Sports Festival was opened with an Olym-pic-style Parade of Nations.

Year 5 girls from Farlington, Lox-wood Primary, Cranleigh Church of England Primary and Greenway Academy paraded like athletes in

an Olympic stadium, carrying flags while live music was played by Farlington school musicians.

Year 10 Sports Leaders ran the festival as the final part of their Level 1 in Sports Leadership.

The event started with an endur-ance race of 600m. A wide range of activities followed with the girls

moving from station to station trying their hand at a wide range of skills including hurdles, striking a rounders ball, scoring hockey goals, throwing, golf and jumping.

All the teams were competing for gold in each activity. The after-noon ended with a celebratory tea for the nine and ten-year-olds af-ter which Louise Higson, Farlington Headmistress, presented medals to winners and runners-up. All girls were presented with a participation certificate

Sara Whittaker, Farlington’s Director of PE and Games, said,:“It was great afternoon of fun, with an immense amount of talent on show from all the pupils involved. They all entered into the spirit of the Olympic parade, waving at the cheering supporters.

“The Year 10 girls did a fantastic job of leading and encouraging the younger girls. Hopefully every-one had the chance to try some-thing new, but most importantly everyone enjoyed the experience. With so many external pressures on girls, sport is an excellent way of building girls’ self-esteem, teach-ing them that winning and losing has nothing to do with your worth as a person and that hard work, repetition and constant practice are keys to successful performance. Nurturing a love of sport is some-thing that will prove invaluable to them as they progress through life.”

Residents have been advised to use a scheme designed to help prevent them being duped.

The advice followed a recent case where a rogue trader was ordered to pay a pensioner £10,000 after grossly over-charging her for garden work.

The 57-year-old from West Sussex was found guilty of misleading and overcharging a vulnerable pensioner following a Trading Standards investiga-tion by West Sussex County Council, and sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months.

He was ordered to pay £10,000 in compensation to the victim and £700 in costs.

The man overcharged a 69-year old widow for improve-ments to her garden between August 2014 and February 2015 .

He had originally quoted £7,941.50 for the work but produced 23 invoices for £16,673.48.

The victim had to take out a loan of £6,000 to satisfy Mr Gaskin’s demands.

After a complaint to the West Sussex Trading Standards team an investigation into Mr Gaskin began.

Trading Standards instructed an independent Chartered Sur-veyor to value the total work and found it to be worth no more than £6,500.

The trader pleaded guilty and admitted that he had over-charged the victim.

Peter Aston, Trading Stand-ards Team Manager, said: “Deceiving an innocent victim is completely unacceptable. We would encourage consumers looking for a reputable trader to use the Buy with Confidence scheme, members of which have been audited and approved by Trading Standards.”

David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Our Trading Standards team have once again done a fantastic job.

“This court ruling sends out a very strong message that if you engage in fraudulent actions you will be caught and prosecuted.”

“If you are concerned that you, a friend or relative have been a victim of a rogue trader, contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice on 03454 040506 or report details online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/TSreport.

Residents warned to check on traders

A blaze wrecked three ambu-lances at a hospital.

The fire started at about 2.20 pm on Monday in a private ambulance that was parked out-sides the east entrance to East Surrey Hospital at Redhill, which serves patients from Horsham, Crawley and surrounding areas.

The private ambulance driver, from Kent, helped by a col-league, safely got a patient out of the vehicle without injury before the fire took hold, but soon flames quickly spread to two other ambulances standing nearby.

About 20 firefighters con-trolled the blaze within an hour but the three ambulances had been severely damaged beyond repair.

The blaze did not reach the main hospital building and no patients were affected, although part of the hospital was evacu-ated as a precaution.

No emergency patients could be admitted for about three hours , with South East Coast Ambulance Service taking patients to other accident and emergency departments until the “all-clear” was given about 5.20pm.

Michael Wilson, chief ex-ecutive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “The hospital is fully open and op-erational. Grateful thanks go to our staff and the fire, police and ambulance teams for their quick response.”

A Horsham schoolgirl who has endured a tough battle with can-cer was given the VIP treatment at a special party to salute the cour-age of children like her.

Ellie Mae Wile-Dunne, 7, was a guest of honour at the circus-themed Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens Star Awards party, held in partnership with TK Maxx, at The Roof Gardens in Kensington.

The extravaganza, featuring some famous faces, was organ-ised to help raise awareness of the charity’s groundbreaking work in the field of children’s cancer research and the urgent need to boost funds.

Ellie Mae was diagnosed with

acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in August 2012, and was one of 20 children from across the UK, who came together as special ambas-sadors to represent around 600 youngsters who have received Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens Star Awards in the last year.

She enjoyed an afternoon of crafts and games, honing his circus skills with activities including plate spinning, juggling and toss-ing diabolos, as well as ‘clowning around’ in a giant ball pit.

Ellie Mae and her family also met party host Stacey Solomon, before receiving a medal from the

presenter and reality television star during a special presentation ceremony.

Ellie Mae has spent a physically and emotionally draining couple

of years battling cancer since her diagnosis.

While fighting her illness she also succumbed to E.Coli and pneumonia and she has had to learn to walk again after her cancer treatment, which severely damaged her bones.

Ellie Mae was diagnosed after one of her aunts, who worked as a receptionist at the local hospital, recognised the tell-tale signs for leukaemia and advised her mum Nikki to take her daughter for a blood test.

Speaking about receiving the news, Nikki said: ‘Never in a mil-lion years did we expect to hear that.

‘That day we had been running around a farm looking at the ani-mals and now we were frantically trying to find a bed for our little girl in a cancer ward.’

Jim added: ‘Nothing can prepare you for that moment. Shock, dread, fear, anguish and desperation were just some of the words that hit us and lived with us over the next months.

‘We felt like we were being driven in a car we had no control over.”

The Star Awards are part of the Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens fundraising campaign, which aims to accelerate research to find kinder treatments and cures for children, teens and young adults with cancer.

Ellie Mae, who was invited on stage to perform a trick with Pud-sey the dog, said: “I’ve had lots and lots of fun and really enjoyed meet-ing Stacey.”

BREAKING NEWSCLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS

Volunteer drivers who can help brighten lives of older people are being sought in Horsham area.

Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneli-ness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Horsham to spare just a few hours each month to drive one or two older people to a local tea party and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves.

The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local commu-nities, providing a regular and vital friendship link every month.

Each older guest is collected from

their home by a volunteer driver, and taken to a host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship.

Contact the Elderly’s National Development Offi cer Hannah John

said: “The charity is committed to off ering a lifeline of friendship

to the oldest and loneliest people. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours one Sunday a month, has a driving licence, a car, and a capac-ity for drinking tea, is eligible to volunteer!

‘’It’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their commu-nity to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.”

Horsham residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly as a driver once a month can contact Hannah John, National Development Offi cer on 0207 881 2369 or email [email protected]

Bushcraft was just one of the back to nature activities at a Wild Wood weekend.

Youngsters tried canopy camp-ing, tree climbing stories under an oak and plays in an amphitheatre. They also shared at Wakehurst gardens near Ardingly in the open-ing of ‘Treetrunk Trek’ consisting of willow sculptures, huge logs and stepping stones, the latest in the ‘Adventurous Journeys’ play areas at Wakehurst in nearby Coates Wood.

In addition the youngsters were entertained by an aerial runway, woodland crafts, chainsaw sculp-ture, working horse and ‘The Stake-out’ providing BBQ skewers served in pittas, with ice-cream for dessert.

Skills such as Sussex trug-making, pole lathe turning, green woodworking and making per-sonalised colour pencils out of coppiced willow were showcased as well as Wakehurst’s Loder Val-ley Warden and resident charcoal burner .

Tony Sweeney, Director of Wake-hurst, said: “We’re delighted at the turn-out at this natural wood-land event.

“There was a lovely atmosphere and families really seemed to be enjoying themselves whilst actively participating in a range of engag-ing events and demonstrations. Pictured are some scenes from the weekend. Action from the session is pictured.

New York could be the destination for a Horsham landscaper’s gold -winning cube creation.

The 15-tonne granite piece was the centre piece of the work of talented Chris Holland, 45, and had crowds waiting for up an hour to see it at the Chelsea Flower show.

Top gardening presenter Monty Don said of the teasingly –named Antithesis of Sarcophagi: “It is the most uplifting and inspiring thing I have ever seen at Chelsea” .

Now there is a good chance the stunning exhibit will fi nd its way across the Atlantic, having started life as a 44-ton bare piece imported from Portugal.

Chris, married with three chil-dren, told the Post: “There is talk of it going to New York. There are various options, but they all seem to be abroad. We would love the cube to have a life after the show so that people can enjoy it. “

At Chelsea the crowds lapped up the element of surprise when they peeped through fi ssures to see not a dead and empty cube but living woodland in the 2.6 metre wide cube, expressing the literal

title translation “opposite of stone coffi ns”.

Chris, who runs Chris Holland Landscapes, said: “Once Monty Don commented on it on television that set the ball rolling for us. By the Friday of the show people were waiting for an hour to see it. “

This is his second gold in three years, having achieved the top award with the Mindfulness Garden when he last entered in 2013, and he has previously won fi ve silver gilts. His latest creation was in collaboration with highly renowned letter carvers Martin Cook and Gary Breeze.

Meanwhile, as the cube awaits its next destination, Chris is turning to the possibility of hiring more help for his business. He said: “One of the things I’d like to get out of this success is that I am hoping to expand, to fi nd someone to work with me. I have got a lot of work. But I would like to bring in some like-minded and creative who are hard-working and meticulous.” Anyone interested in working with Chris can contact him on 01403 241201.

Chris’s Chelsea cube set for Big Apple The South of England show is

spinning into second day at Ard-ingly showground today (Friday).

Thousands are enjoying the showcase of the countryside, laced with action shows and entertain-ment.

This year the fi nal day of the show tomorrow (Saturday) co-incides with the offi cial birthday celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Many prizes have already been awarded for outstanding livestock and horse riders have won medals in the jumping classes.

This year the spotlights is thrown on sheep and farmers in the Year of Sheep as well as related industries.

Students from Horsham and sur-rounding areas who attend Cen-tral Sussex College at Crawley will have more than 700 extra places after its new Advanced Technol-ogy Centre was opened by Lord Blunkett.

A five month project transformed an underutilized college building into a modern, industry standard learning environment, with practi-cal workshops.

The project, funded by the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Project (LEP), will provide much needed training facilities and opportunities

to support growth in areas like ad-vanced manufacturing, engineer-ing and environmental technology which have been identified as priority growth sectors within the Coast to Capital LEP area.

The centre is expected to provide an additional 770 places for school leavers, apprentices and adult learners in areas associated with manufacturing, electronics, and specialist areas of environmental technology such as photovol-taic, solar thermal, biomass, wind turbine technology, thermography and insulation.

The College’s Principal, Sarah Wright, commented, “The Ad-vanced Technology Centre is an exciting new addition to the College and is symbolic of the investment we are making to secure the future development of skills in Crawley and the surrounding area.

“As an integral part of the local community, with a long tradition in providing engineering training for employers far and wide, this fantastic new centre will allow us to continue to grow and enhance our provision of specialist technology and engineering courses.”

Hundreds of new places on wayMore spaces on the wayStudents got some advice on

forthcoming sessions to build skills for life.

Representatives from the Na-tional Citizenship Service Becky Griffiths, Rose Abram and Ben Wallace chatted to youngsters at Collyer’s college at Horsham about opportunities offered by the service in the summer holi-days and October half-term.

Collyer’s students who have taken part previously in the service’s activities were also on hand to talk about what they’ve gained from participating.

Lucy Hargreaves, from Col-lyer’s Progression Directorate said: “The National Citizenship Service programme is open to 15-17 year olds in England and Northern Ireland. It’s a fun and unforgettable programme that helps to build skills for life

whilst taking on new challenges and meeting new people.”

The service is a government backed initiative so students would never have to pay more than £50 to participate in the programme, much of which is residential and activity based.

Becky Griffiths said: “Col-lyer’s students make up a large proportion of our graduates and they are always so personable, articulate, considerate, enthu-siastic, and the first to volun-teer and dedicate their time to projects! It’s fantastic to watch them grow in confidence and ability during the project and to see them mature and develop. We’re keen to get more students on board as they work so well with others and help to make NCS a success.”

Volunteers who drive people from such villages as Storrington and Billingshurst have won Royal rec-ognition equivalent to an MBE.

The Queen has conferred the prestigious Queen’s Award for Vol-untary Service on the Community Minibus Association for West Sus-sex in its 40th anniversary year.

The dedicated volunteers and escorts enable people who might otherwise be stranded in their own homes to get out and about from rural villages, using a fleet of 13 minibuses.

The volunteers, escorts and jour-neys are coordinated by volunteer village and divisional organisers, with the association being directed by a Board of Trustees.

The organisation provides door to door service to shopping centres, lunch clubs, and seaside loca-tions and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, in a variety of different roles including drivers, passenger escorts, booking staff, fleet man-agers, divisional organisers and many others who ensure the day to day running of the charity.

The service operates across rural West Sussex, using 13 minibuses with centres located in Ashington, Billingshurst, Five Villages, south of A27, Petworth, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and Wisbor-ough Green.

Chairman of West Sussex minibus, Alistair Sheppard OBE said: “We are extremely proud and honoured to receive this award,

which coincides with our 40th anniversary this year. Our tremen-dous group of unpaid volunteers help to maintain essential support to local communities across rural West Sussex. Passengers enjoy our friendly service and look forward to meeting both new friends and old during their trips. This award is a tribute to all the dedicated work by our volunteers, past and present.”

The UK national honour recog-nises the outstanding contribu-tions made to local communities by groups of volunteers; it has an equivalent status for voluntary groups as the MBE has for individ-uals.In West Sussex the other win-ners were: Arundel Museum Society Volunteers, Ferring Conservation Group, The Volunteers of the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.

The organisations will receive a certificate signed by The Queen and an exclusive commemorative crystal, presented by Her Majesty’s representative in West Sussex, Susan Pyper, the Lord-Lieutenant, at a special ceremony arranged by the Lieutenancy office.

The organisations have also received an invitation for repre-sentatives to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this summer.

Mrs Pyper said: “I am absolutely delighted that four of our out-standing voluntary organisations in the County have been selected as winners of this most prestigious award”.

Patients from St Catherine’s Hospice Neurological Clinic got stuck in with a sausage making workshop.

Hospice nurses and volunteers helped fi ve patients who have a range of neurological conditions including Parkinsons and Motor Neurone Disease use came together to make sausages using patient Pat’s best-selling recipe.

Pat, a retired butcher from Handcross, shared his recipe for his best-selling Old Sussex sausages with other patients and hospice staff .

St Catherine Catering Team were instrumental in helping arrange the sausage making, providing equipment and gaining support from Flanagan Butchers in Craw-

ley Down and Teresa Collins, from StCatherines Therapy Team pro-vided the sausage making machine.

As the group set to work, Pat oversaw their eff orts and told them his top sausage making tips includ-ing, Always mix the seasoning and water by hand ;when adding the meat into the seasoning, do it a bit at a time, breaking it up with your hand so it mixes well.

Pat joked: “If I’d taken this long I’d be out of business.”

The sausages were taken to St Catherine’s kitchen to cure and to store for patients to enjoy when they next visit Day Hospice. The project is all part of how St Cathe-rine’s helps patients to live well for as long as they can. The St Cath-erine’s Day Hospice is a place that

patients can visit for a few hours for symptom control but also to spend time with people in a similar situation and enjoy activi-ties and past times they used to do, with the help of a specialised Multi-Disciplinary Team and equipment.

Art fans get a rare chance to see the work of artist Peter Samuel-son at Horsham Museum.

His work features in an exhibi-tion running until mid-July.

Horsham Museum said: “Having never to live life by the brush as he had a small private income, he could and did hone his undoubta-ble artistic talent, pleasing himself rather than his client. He left be-hind a rich artistic legacy, but one outside of the normal art world: such was the life of Peter Samu-elson that he has been discovered twice by the art establishment.

Now, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery have the pleasure of holding a ma-jor exhibition of his work, thanks to the passion of a local collector.

The exhibition Peter Samuelson Rediscovered brings together over 30 works, including drawings, watercolours and oils. It celebrates an artist whose work every now and again reappears to pierce the memory of recollection; perhaps a book cover to DH Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers or for Mr Porter, the online fashion retailer.

Captivated by both male and female beauty, his life led him into France during the 1930s and on to

boarding houses in Torquay and West London in the 1950s; there, he would meet the beautiful young people who later became models. Peter Samuelson Rediscovered showcases the work of an artist that the art critic Russell-Taylor describes as ‘a romantic realist: romantic in his responses to the physical beauty of young men, realistic in his ways of depicting it, and overall, in his attitude to life’.

In another catalogue of Peter Samuelson’s work, Russell-Taylor said, ‘One could say, in brusque summary, that what fascinated him [Peter] was beauty in men and character in women’.

Until the visitor sees the actual paintings, and the artist’s mas-tery of the colour pallet and the brush in real life, his work may be classifi ed by its subject mat-ter. His portraits of the cobbler, the postman and the butcher seem to connect readily to the theatri-cal time of ‘Angry Young Men’, rather than of any other period. They become 1950s portraits of tradesmen rather than part of any centuries-old artistic tradition of painting tradesmen. The portraits exude familiarity, named simply as John, Ray and Pete; only their trade shows a life defi ned by their work, before they have created a separate life, tied to their surname.

The exhibition Peter Samuelson Rediscovered is made possible by the determined eff ort of a local

owner to acquire a superb range of the artist’s work. The owner’s collection ranges from a very early 1939 self-portrait, painted before the artist signed up and served in the bomb disposal squad, right through to his later works, taken up after his re-discovery and career as a leading Oriental rug restorer, also inspiring his use of rich colour.

The exhibition features a number of classic Peter Samuelson paint-ings and styles: from portraits of thoughtful females, to beauti-ful male lodgers at the Torquay and Ealing residences, at work or casually lounging in the domestic setting.

Faces and complex colour mix to create beautiful skin tones and expressive eyes haunt the work. The paintings also contain visual puns, such as a painting within a painting, various pets, richly coloured carpets and soft fabric elements - all highlighting Peter Samuelson’s command of paint and understanding of colour.

This is an incredibly rare chance to see this artist’s work: only one of Peter Samuelson’s works is in a museum or art gallery, all other images are online or in print. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are grateful to the private collec-tor who wishes anonymity for this loan.”

Peter Samuelson Rediscovered runs at the museum until July 15.

Gatton Manor Hotel & Golf Club presents an open-air garden theatre production of E Nesbit’s classic story which has delighted

audiences for years. Brought to life by The Chapterhouse Theatre Company

this is the perfect summer entertainment for all the family.

Students from Horsham beat their own drum when they visited a former pupil who became a world renowned artist.

Christ’s Hospital Year 12 pupils James Sibley, Joe Morrow and Alex Bell were invited to St. Nazaire on the west coast of France to take part in the opening ceremony of world renowned artists Christian

Hidaka’s 2016 summer exhibition.Christian was educated at

Christ’s Hospital during the 1990s. He went on to study Fine Art at Winchester School of Art, Par-sons School of Art and Design, New York, and the Royal Academy Schools, London. He has had enor-mous success and exhibited across the globe.

His paintings are puzzles with solitary fi gures set in Mediter-ranean courtyards. Clues about art history and his memories are immersed within the paintings which include Christ’s Hospital drummers.

At the opening of his exhibi-tion, the Christ’s Hospital pupils made a dramatic entrance beating their drums as they walked in from the street, after playing in close co-ordination, they dispersed to the diff erent galleries within the exhibition where they played soloes and responses.

When they reconvened they improvised with the French sound artist Tomoko Sauvage who makes compositions using water, distort-ing the sounds with a mixing desk. The boys were encouraged to ‘play loud’ and the piercing noise and echoes of their drumming fi lled the gallery space. They ended their piece by exiting the gallery and marching off into the distance. It was a completely unique experi-ence for the boys and their playing completed the experience of the exhibition for Christian.

Sculptors, silversmiths, painters and printmakers are getting or-ganised for next month’s annual Horsham Art Trail.

Artists in Horsham and nearby villages are opening their studios and houses on July 9 - 10 and 16 - 17 , from 9am to 5pm with free entry.

This year, the dates coincide with Horsham’s fi rst Arts Festival. Organisers say this combination should make for an excellent week, and attract many visitors to the town.

The 31 participating artists are spread over 13 locations in Horsham town and the villages of Slinfold, Warnham, Plum-mers Plain and Partridge Green, and people are invited to visit the artists in their studios or homes.

Most of the venues off er re-freshments, and at many people can see artists at work, ask lots of questions and in some cases have a go. Amongst the arts on dis-play will be textile, glass, wood, up-cycling artists, silversmiths , sculptors, print and jewellery makers, painters and ceramicists, some of whom are fairly new to the group, others who are well-established artists.

Denise Bliss has exhibited her jewellery many times before; she

swapped teaching Design and Technology for jewellery mak-ing. She bases designs on nature and loves asymmetry in her work. ‘Silversmithing is a craft that one can nev-er stop

learning as there are so many areas to explore.’

Jill Mills is a newish member

to the group. While Jill trained in diff erent techniques, she par-ticularly liked the creativity of (French) knitting and crocheting with fi ne wires, with or without the addition of home-made felted beads. It’s a very original ap-proach, one she enjoys teaching in her workshops.

This year, many of Horsham’s artists submitted their work in a Card Competition. A panel of prominent independent local judges selected ten images of ten diff erent makers to be made into high quality greeting cards. The winning images display diff erent techniques; from Paul Baden’s fascinating woodwork to Lesley Taylor’s witty sculptures, and from Jo Willis and Carolyn Gibbs’s peaceful paintings to David Meek-

ing’s restless sea. If blue is your colour, Kevin Meeten’s

Blue Spires, Alison In-gram’s Wolves, or Rose-mary Myles’s mosaic will inspire you, and there is Esther Clark’s travel-in-spired textile image ver-sus Ian Hadley’s Carfax

painting. The 5” x 7” cards come in two sets, they will be available at the various art trail venues, as well as at a number of diff erent outlets in and

around Horsham for £6, or both sets for £10. . For details on the ven-

ues and facilities, please visit http://www.horshamartistso-

penstudios.co.uk, https://www.facebook.com/HorshamArtist-sOpenStudios , or pick up a folder from the library, Horsham Museum, The Capitol, or various Horsham locations.

Thrill seekers are sought to take part in a charity’s fi rst tandem diving challenge.

St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley has 33 exclusive places to celebrate its 33 years of service and the dive will be held on August 20 at the Old Sarum Airfi eld in Salisbury.

Flying 10,000 feet through the clouds at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, hospice supporters will be strapped to an experienced instructor from GoSkydive, and will freefall for approximately 30 seconds.

Last year, Michelle Hanley ar-ranged her own private skydive to support St Catherine’s and now she is supporting those who line up for the team eff ort. She said: “I’m scared of heights so it was a huge challenge, but it was nothing compared to the bravery that St Catherine’s patients and families face every day. I’m so proud of

myself and couldn’t be happier to raise £700 in sponsorship!”

Michelle’s fundraising eff ort has made a real diff erence to those the hospice cares for. Her sponsorship is enough to fund four patients

visiting St Catherine’s Day Hospice for a day and provide a patient or relative with an hour of advice from St Catherine’s specialist Welfare Advisor.

Gordon Blamire, founder and Managing Director for GoSkydive,

said: “GoSkydive is the only centre that specialises in tandem skydives for fi rst-timers. We always aim to give our customers the best pos-sible experience especially when they’re doing it for such a good cause, and we’re looking forward to helping people raise as much as possible for St Catherine’s whilst having a really good time!

A spokeswoman for the hospice said: “Whether you’ve taken to the skies before or want to experience the thrill of trying something new, everyone is welcome. All you’ll need is a dare devil attitude.

“This challenge isn’t for the fainthearted but your bravery will help St Catherine’s to continue to be there to care for patients and their relatives. Places are limited so combat your fears and be a hospice hero today.”

If you would like to take part in the skydive, you can register online at http://www.goskydive.com/st-catherines-hospice. Entry is £50 per person with a minimum sponsorship target of £395 and registration closes at 5pm on June 24. If you can’t make the August 20 date St Catherine’s is also looking for thrill seekers willing to take on their skydive challenge throughout the year so please get in touch.

To fi nd out more or to discuss other available dates please contact St Catherine’s Event Team on: [email protected] or call 01293 583063.

The new chairman of Horsham District Council began his year with a slogan.

Cllr Christian Mitchell, a former Collyer’s college student, said after his election by fellow councillors “My chairman’s theme for this year is ‘One Horsham District, fair for all’ and so I have chosen The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, The Springboard Project, and St. John Ambulance, Horsham Division as my three Chairman’s charities that I wish to promote this coming year, alongside the Chairman’s Charitable Trust Fund.”

Cllr Roger Clarke was ap-pointed the vice chairman.

Cllr Mitchell takes over the role of Cllr Tricia You-tan, chairman for the past year.

Cllr Mitchell said: “I am deeply hon-oured to be elected Chairman of Hor-sham District Council for the coming year.

“We all know how special the Horsham district is with its beautiful countryside and South Downs and our historic market towns and villages. It’s the envy of every other district.

“ I

look forward over the coming year to meeting as many people across Horsham district – those that work tirelessly in the voluntary sector and in sup-port of our local charities, those that provide jobs and work here and those that study, teach and live here as well as those in the Armed Forces and those that keep us safe; the police, fi re and the ambulance service.

“ As Chairman of Horsham District Council I am proud of the opportunities we provide for all in the district. Horsham has given me huge opportuni-ties; studying at The College of Richard Collyer and my fi rst job

Pupils at Tanbridge House School in Horsham came up with the most innovative fundraising idea for a hospice.

Their fund-raising scheme in-cluded a memory board of people’s memories and experiences of St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley.

Students from local schools tak-ing part in the hospice’s Five-O Project, have collectively raised more than £17,000 for local hospice care.

£17,000 is enough to fund an en-tire day of St Catherine’s care ser-vices and what the hospice called the students’ incredible fundrais-ing achievements were celebrated at an awards night at the Holiday Inn, Gatwick.

Watched by parents, teachers and mentors, pupils from Tanbridge House School and other competing schools presented their business plans and event ideas to a judging panel in a bid to win one of four awards.

Other schools scooping an award included Hazelwick School for the most money raised,

Gatwick School for most pounds per pupil and Thomas Bennett Community College for best pres-entation.

Designed to develop students’ business skills, the Five-O Project

challenged a team of six students ranging from Year 7 to sixth form from the participating schools to create a business plan and organise initiatives that would raise a mini-mum of £1,500 for St Catherine’s from an initial £50 investment.

With support from 20 busi-ness mentors from NatWest, who sponsored this year’s project, most of the school pupils smashed their fundraising target. The pupils also benefi tted from professional busi-ness advice and expertise as they planned their fundraising ideas across the 11 week challenge.

John Redfern, Head of Corpo-rate (South East) at NatWest, said: “We’re really glad to support St Catherine’s Five-O Project. The opportunity to help smart, enthu-siastic and driven young people to raise money for St Catherine’s, while preparing themselves for the working world, has been invaluable and incredibly rewarding.”

Gabi Field, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s, sat on the judging panel and said: “The enthusiasm, creativity and dedication of the pupils was really impressive and it was great to see their ideas brought to life in their presentations. Each year, St Catherine’s needs to raise more than £6 million in voluntary

donations so it’s important young people feel motivated to support us and understand the work we do caring for local people and their family and friends. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the Five-O teams, their teachers, parents and NatWest mentors for their eff orts and support.”

If you are interested in fi nding out more about the Five-O Pro-ject and how your school can get involved next year please contact Lawrie Mallyon on: [email protected] or call Lawrie on: 01293 447376.

Top businesses from across the South East have come out in force to support British Airways i360, which is conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects and opens on Brighton beach this summer..

A dozen businesses have already signed up as official partners of British Airways i360, which will expose their brand to the millions of visitors expected at the world’s tallest moving observation attrac-tion.

They will also be benefiting from marketing and business network-ing opportunities; a Gold VIP Card, giving them priority access to all the major events at the attraction, including the launch event, and reduced rates on room hire, to use the superb new conferencing and events facilities.

British Airways i360 CEO, Eleanor Harris, said: “We are really proud to be working with some of the region’s leading firms and devel-oping partnerships to do some

really ground-breaking business activities, which should benefit the entire region.

“British Airways i360 has an im-portant role to play, in the future of Brighton & Hove, and we have been committed from the start to working using companies from the region, employing local residents and bringing as much economic benefit as we can to the local com-munity.”

Commercial partners include Brighton CCTV, Curve Information Technology Ltd, DMH Stallard LLP, Flowers Unlimited, L & S Print-ing, Preston Insurance Brokers, Pure360, Royal Bank of Scotland, Skerritts Chartered Financial Plan-ners, Spofforths Chartered Ac-countants, TICKETMEDIA and We are Tilt Ltd. All have local offices in Brighton & Hove, or Worthing, and many also have offices in the wider region and London.

Brighton & Hove Economic Part-nership executive director, Gavin Stewart, said: “It’s great to see so many excellent local, regional and national businesses supporting British Airways i360 – it’s good for the local economy and fantastic for the profile of the city.”

Eleanor Harris continued: “We took the strategic decision, from the start, to work with local com-panies and we have followed this through - it would have been easy to hire London companies, but we have chosen local firms, where possible.”

The attraction will also be selling local artists’ work in its shop and serving food and drink, from the South Downs region, in its res-taurant and event rooms. It was recently announced that a leading Sussex sparkling wine producer will name the ‘Nyetimber Sky Bar’ – a unique bar inside the glass viewing pod. Cook and Line, the hilari-ous pirate duo, from CBeebies’ Swashbuckle, will be onboard ship, plus Crawley favourite, Hilary O’Neil (who you will re-member as Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty), will be playing Mrs Dar-ling and Big Chief Sitting Cow, while by huge popular demand, Michael J Batchelor, panto dame extraordinaire, is back as Mrs Smee.

Once again, the show will be written by Paul Hendy, and brought to you by Evolution Productions, the same creative team behind last year’s record-breaking smash hit, Jack and the Beanstalk.

With lots of audience partici-pation and sensational special effects, this promises to be The Hawth’s biggest and most spectacular pantomime ever. It’s guaranteed to be a festive treat to delight the whole family.

MATT CARDLESunday 19 June 7.30pm

Saturday 25 June 7.45pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley

Presenting a fascinating and often hilarious two hour audio-visual presentation from ‘the fi nest British broadcaster bar none… an amazing man’ (Stephen Fry) at The Hawth, Crawley, on June 25 at 7.45pm.

Rochdale, where Andy was born in 1959, triggered in him a curios-ity he has never lost. Musically, his horizons were opened up by an early obsession with Bob Dylan. Tracing Dylan’s infl uences led him towards folk, blues, country, soul and gospel.

Andy went to Leeds University, partly to study politics in the half-hope of becoming a journalist, but chiefl y because the student union, at Leeds, put on the biggest college concerts in the country.

In his second year, he seized power of the job of Entertainments Secretary, in a bloodless coup, and ran the concerts for two and a half years. His line-ups were a who’s-who of early 80s music – concerts by The Clash, Elvis Costello and Black Uhuru, among others, were regular occurences. Naturally, he failed his degree.

Andy came to London in 1984 to work as Billy Bragg’s driver and roadie. It was while he was chaper-oning Billy to BBC2s Whistle Test, that he was spotted by a producer as a potential new presenter. He began his broadcasting career in September 1984 with a baptism by fi re – a report for Whistle Test from the Monsters of Rock heavy metal festival.

In 1985, Andy was invited by Radio 1 to present his own show

with a free choice of music. As his own tastes evolved, so did the content of the radio show. Meet-ing the musicologist and Radio 3 presenter, Lucy Duran – now an old friend – and the fi rst appear-ance of Zimbabwe’s Bhundu Boys in the UK, tipped Andy heavily into African music.

Andy presented his Radio 1 show for 15 years, until he was sacked in May 2000, to be replaced by another dance music programme. He realised Radio 3 was his spiritual new home when Controller, Roger Wright, told him that what he liked about Andy’s Radio 1 programme was that he never knew what was coming next. He joined Radio 3 in April 2001 and continued to ignore categories and mix it all up.

In his spare time Andy enjoys motorcyles (particularly racing) and travels to extreme countries. He has thrice holidayed in North Korea and, for Channel 4, made the very fi rst fi lm inside the secretive country.

A journalist at heart, he has often reinvented himself as a foreign correspondent for BBC radio news and occasionally made travel documentaries for Channel 4. He reported for the BBC from the midst of a volcanic eruption in Montserrat, where he had taken his partner for “a quiet Caribbean holiday” (the island blew up the day after they arrived) and, most memorably, from Rwanda during the horrors of 1994.

Tickets: £16.50, can be purchased from The Hawth Box Offi ce on 01293 553636 or by visiting www.hawth.co.uk.

At this time of the year house sellers often face a dilemma. Should they wait until after the holiday season before they put their home on the market?

Or, if they are going on holiday themselves, should they put eve-rything on hold and potentially risk losing a buyer while they are away?

Adam Heraty, Branch Manager of Connells in Horsham has no doubts. “The local property mar-ket is extremely active at the mo-ment, with most homes selling quickly and achieving excellent prices. However, there is still a significant imbalance between the number of people looking to buy and properties for sale, so we don’t expect to see a slowdown in activity over the summer. Provided your estate agent is fully aware of your holiday plans, knows how to contact you and can gain access to your property, then I would certainly advise sell-ers to keep their property on the market.”

The local branch is advising home sellers to follow just a few simple guidelines if they have plans to go away this summer:

Notify your estate agent of your holiday dates well in advance

Give your agent a set of house keys and talk through security, access and viewing arrangements whilst you are away

Ask your travel agent for a contact number at your holiday destination or check that your mobile will work abroad and you will have reception

Pass on these numbers to your estate agent, along with the times you will be available to take a call.

Even if you can’t be contacted you can still leave specific in-structions in writing with your estate agent and legal repre-sentatives about what offer may be acceptable.

“Whether you are going away or not, there’s no reason to delay your sale until after the sum-mer – your ideal buyer might be out there at this very moment,” concludes Adam.

To find out how Connells can help you sell this summer, con-tact your local branch on 01403 256331 or email [email protected]

Don’t put your sale on hold over the holidays, says Connells

Junior football round up

Dan Lucas Memorial Tournament

Roff ey Football Club ran their 1st annual tournament in memorial of Dan Lucas to raise money to help grass roots football.

Twelve local teams took part in the Dan Lucas Memorial Tourna-ment with the U11’s playing in the morning followed by the U12’s in the afternoon. All games were played in great spirit with some outstanding football displayed by the young teams.

The U11 group A winners were Ifi eld Galaxy with Billingshurst FC fi nishing runners up and the group B winners were Horsham FC with Lingfi eld fi nishing second. The fi -

nal saw Ifi eld Galaxy beat Horsham FC 2-0 to take the trophy.

The U12 group A winners were East Grinstead A with the runners up being Cranleigh and the group B the winners were Loxwood FC with runners up Royal Utd; Royal Utd narrowly beating Loxwood 1-0 in the fi nal.

The tournament was a great success raising an amazing £3500 for grass roots football and will be repeated next year on June 17 at Roff ey FC.Broadbridge Heath U11s reign in Shoreham

Shoreham 5-a-Side TournamentBroadbridge Heath U11’s

entered the Shoreham 5 a side tournament in only their fi rst year as a competitive Sunday team.

BBH qualifi ed from their group which was won by the very strong favourites Hollingbury Hawks with BBH the only team to score against the Hawks, losing narrowly 2-1. With a 2-1 semi fi nal victory over Hove Rivervale, BBH reached their fi rst ever fi nal.

The fi nal against the Hollingbury Hawks was again a close fought match but this time BBH were vic-torious 1-0, the only goal coming from a Zain Beg header from a Luke Roberts long throw; A great victory for a team still in its infancy.

Sam and Molly claim silver medals at regional fi nalsTrampoliningDave Smith – Sports Editor

Billingshurst based Gatwick Flyers Trampoline Club achieved some great results at the 2016 Trampo-line Regional Team Finals.

A total of 650 gymnasts from the top clubs in the UK competed at the event which was held at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham.

Two gymnasts from the club both produced very solid routines, gaining podium places and secur-ing themselves a place at the NDP Finals next month. In front of a large audience, Gatwick Flyers’ Molly McMillan - competing in the NDP level 1, 11-12 age category - got the club and the region off to a great start with a silver medal place. Next up was Sam Claydon competing in the NDP Level 1 13+

age category; Sam’s performance saw him also take the silver medal place.

The points achieved by the club helped the South East Region secure an impressive 3rd place out of 12 regions in the fi nal of the regional championships.

Head Coach Mike Gevaux said: “It was a great day for our gym-nasts, the club and the South East Region. Molly and Sam have worked extremely hard over the last couple of months and both displayed impressive routines on the day in what was a tough fi eld of gymnasts. They should both be as proud as we are with their silver winning performances.”

It’s now full steam ahead for the gymnasts as they prepare for the NDP Finals in Telford next month.

Pulborough continue winning streak

BowlsJane Gray – Pulborough BC

Pulborough Bowls Club once again hosted the Cawston Tourists for an afternoon of entertaining bowls.

4 rinks played 21 ends of com-petitive bowls with Cliff ord, the Cawston Captain, earning his coach ride home by winning his game

against Captain Paul, 15 shots to 13. The rest of the Cawston team are probably still sitting in the car park, after defeat on the other 3 rinks. Skip, John Brown and team narrowly missed out on top rink after dropping 1 shot on end 20 to fi nish 17 shots ahead, 29/12. Ivan Salmon, Steve Adsett, Mike Richards and Mick Ayling, scored a 6 on the fi nal end to snatch top

rink honours by fi nishing 31/13. Pulborough fi nished on 99/51.

In Pulborough’s third game in the Brookes Motors League, away against Fishbourne, 2 triples played 18 ends, with Skip, Len Adsett, lead, Pauline Adsett and number 2, Paul Day, keeping their opponents on 3 shots for 9 ends, to fi nish 26/10. The fi nal score was 37/35 to Pulborough and another 4 league points.

To complete their triple of wins, Pulborough faced Horsham on home turf on Sunday. 4 triples played in humid conditions, with top rink going to Ivan Salmon, Roger Jupp and Arthur Varndell, 20/12. Pulborough took the win by 20 points, 76/56.

As the bowls season heats up, the County fi xtures come thick and fast, with the Pulborough men in singles, pairs and fours this week. Jeff Davy beat Fred Bushby in the singles, 21/8, Steve Adsett/Jeff Davy beat Mick Campbell/Tony Bade 15/12 and Mick Ralph, Alan Jordan, Jeff Davy and Ivan Salmon won their game 25/17 to complete a clean sweep for Pulborough.

BowlsDavid Spurr - Horsham Park BC

Horsham Park achieved a narrow win by 3 shots, 65 to 62, when they played away at Billingshurst Bowls Club.

Park won 2 rinks, drew 1 and lost 1. Bryony Wood with Roger Leicester and Barbara Rowe were Park’s top rink winning by a superb 16 shots, 22 shots to Billingshurst’s 6. Skip Brenda Thompson with Angela Spurr and Vic Pratt had a very close game which could have gone ei-ther way but Brenda fi nally won by 1 shot, 15 to 14. Skip David Peters had another close game, drawing 16 shots all. Captain

David Spurr had the only losing rink when he was outplayed by the Billingshurst Captain.

Horsham Park held their annual drawn 2 wood pairs com-petition on a glorious sunny day. There was some competitive bowling played in front of quite a few spectators. The winners of group A, Frank Heath and Beryl Nobel, played the winners of group B, David James and Brian Milner, in the grand fi nal. After some close ends and even ends where none of the bowls reached within a metre of the jack, David James and Brian Milner eventu-ally won with a score of 4 shots to 3.

Horsham manager Dom Di Paola has acted quickly to secure for next season some of the most important and infl uential players from the highly successful title winning squad that gained an im-mediate return to Ryman League football last term.

A solid back four line up of Ashley Jones, Charlie Farmer, Mark Knee and Alex Duncan have already put pen to paper and will turn out in Horsham colours next season.

Ashley Jones was Di Paola’s manager’s player of the season so it is no surprise that he was one of the fi rst players to be approached.

Jones will play alongside fellow centre back Farmer who last season clocked up over 100 career appear-ances for the Hornets. Another player with plenty of Horsham games under his belt, the reliable and popular Mark Knee, will fi ll one of the full back slots while Duncan takes the other.

These four are joined by two other infl uential players. Wide goal-scoring midfi elder Darren Boswell has agreed to make his pace and ability available for the Hornets cause for the forthcom-ing season. In addition, the goal machine and crowd favourite Terry Dodd will also again wear the green and yellow of Horsham and try to duplicate his 32 league goals in the Ryman next season. Hardworking utility player Adam Hunt, after a very solid season for the Hornets,

has also agreed to another year, as has Tom Atkinson. However the biggest recapture for Di Paola by far is that of infl uential club captain Joe Shelley who despite a number of off ers from other clubs has once again decided to be a Hornet.

In addition to last season’s returning familiar faces Horsham have also secured the services of 33 year old experienced midfi elder Ollie Rowland who played for Ry-man Premier club Burgess Hill last season. He will join teenage striker Charlie Pitcher who scored 25 goals for Loxwood last season and George Branford returns for a second spell having last appeared for the club in the 2014/15 relegation season.

There will undoubtedly be more additions as Di Paola puts together a squad capable of competing in the top half of the Ryman.

Following Horsham 1st XV consolidating their position in London 2 South East, and winning the Bob Rogers Cup for the third successive season, the fi xtures for 2016/17 have now been released providing the opportunity to reacquaint with several clubs not faced for a few years.

The fi rst game of the new season - on Saturday September 10 - is at home to Beckenham followed a week later by an away fi xture against Sussex rivals Hove.

The Green and Whites then face newly promoted Bromley at home on 24 September followed by a trip to strongly fancied Medway.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “We have only just fi nished playing and I am already getting excited about the new season.

Congratulations on the promo-tion of our old friends Brom-ley and Heathfi eld & Waldron whom we know are both tough sides to beat. Charlton Park we have played before and Med-way have been relegated due to registration issues and will be tough opponents and surely the favourites to go up. We learned a lot from last year. We face Beck-enham fi rst whom we beat at home last year in one of our best performances of the season. In our second game we then face our cup fi nal opponents Hove away in what is sure to be an-other cracking game.” Presea-son training starts in early July.

Horsham 2nd XV, known as the Lions, also consolidated their position last season fol-lowing promotion to Sussex Spitfi re League 1, and will open their league campaign away to relegated Uckfi eld. This is fol-lowed a week later by a home game against Hellingly.

Two Joggers teams complete the South Downs Relay

AthleticsPhil Liberman - Horsham Joggers

Last Saturday two Horsham Jog-gers teams competed in the test-ing South Downs Way Relay.

This is an invitation race over a 100 mile course run in teams of 6. Joggers’ two teams fi nished very creditably in 13hrs 21 and 14 hrs 03.

Then on Sunday 40 Horsham Joggers made their way to the coast to run with the 2000+ strong fi eld at the Worthing 10k. There were

some outstanding performances with Richard Lee Wright com-ing 26th in 36.42 followed by Paul Oakley 37.11, Pete O’Connell (fi rst in Veteran 55 category) 37.18, Harry Wilcox 40.55, Steve Mitchell 41.37, Paul Adams 42.06, Mike Catlow 43.07, Paul Yokom 44.53, Guy Gilder 45.11, Steve Wilson 45.43, Keith Valentine 45.59, Val Purnell 46.48, Janine Littler 46.58, Emma Comber 47.16, James Boniface 48.10, Geoff Fisher 48.12, Emma Walters 49.13, Dan Price 49.19, Ni-

Battling Billingshurst run Cuckfi eld close

Saturday June 4 - Sussex Premier LeagueBillingshurst 142 All Out (45.0 overs) Cuckfi eld 145-6 (34.4 overs)Cuckfi eld won by 4 wickets

CricketMartin Read - Sports Reporter

Put in to bat, Billingshurst posted 75 for the fi rst wicket, Captain Stuart Barber making 33 and Tom Haynes 34.

But, Josh Hayward, who fi nished with 7-53, caused a mini col-lapse, four wickets falling without addition to the score. Twenties from Scott Stratton and Andy Barr improved the situation but a target of 143 with 67 overs avail-able was always going to be very diffi cult to defend. Yet, Cuckfi eld were reduced to 12-2, during an excellent opening spell from Barr and Will Fazakerly. Ben Williams then took 2-42 and Dan Doran and Haynes a wicket apiece and, thanks to some excellent catching, with the visitors on 101-6 an upset was on the cards - until a crucial chance went begging. A gritty, unbeaten

fi fty – despite hobbling from a leg injuring - from Aussie Jordan Silk, fresh from playing for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, ably supported by experienced repre-sentative cricketer Chris Mole (35) saw Cuckfi eld home.

Billingshurst fought well, Chair-man Jim Burroughs telling the Dis-trict Post: “Last year we won games like this – another 35 or 40 runs would have made it interesting!”

It has been confi rmed that Bill-ingshurst’s outstanding all-round-er Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi will not be returning this season, having been refused a visa not-withstanding playing for the club in the four preceding seasons and returning home in September. His presence is sorely missed. Tomor-row (Saturday) Billingshurst, look-ing for a much needed win, travel to Brighton & Hove, over whom they did the double in the league last season (when Brighton fl irted with relegation). Ninth placed Brighton were heavily beaten by East Grinstead last week but elimi-nated Billingshurst in the T20 cup earlier in the season.

Horsham’s magic Michael’s leave Bognor spellboundSunday June 5 - Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup Bognor Regis 143 All Out (19.1 overs) Horsham 145-2 (16.1 overs) Horsham won by 8 wickets

Two outstanding performances by Horsham’s two Michaels – Mun-day and Thornely powered them through to the T20 Quarter Final.

Horsham won the toss and put Bognor in to bat. A 76 run open-ing stand promised much, the fi rst four batsmen getting good starts, Max Ashmore leading the way with 47, but the Thornely brothers had other ideas – Jamie taking 1-10 and Michael 3-29. Then, after snaring an opener, Michael Munday sank the middle order almost without

trace, taking four wickets in seven balls for one run, the last six Bog-nor wickets crashing for ten runs, Michael fi nishing with 5-8, includ-ing two LBWs and a stumping, off his four over allocation. Then Mi-chael Thornely decided enough was enough, plundering 106 not out in 64 balls with 13 fours and 4 sixes, Horsham steamrollering home with 23 balls still in the bank.

Horsham skipper James John-son said: “To be fair to Bognor they were batting well until we pegged them back and then they had no answer to our two magic Michaels!”

Horsham go through to the Quarter Final on Sunday July 3 with a home tie against Preston No-mads, commencing at 15.30. Earlier (noon start) Horsham seconds play Portslade in their T20 QF, also at Cricketfi eld Road.

Roff ey cruise through to T20 Quarter FinalSunday June 5 - Sussex Gray-Nicholls T20 Cup St James’s Montfi ore 150-5 (20 overs) Roff ey 154-5 (18.0 overs)Roff ey won by 5 wickets

At their Keymer Road Hassocks ground a young St James’s side posted a challenging total but were comfortably beaten by an assured Roff ey batting display.

Roff ey won the toss, elected to fi eld and were rewarded by an early Leigh Harrison wicket, but did not taste further success until another 118 runs had been added. Tayyab Mahmood scored 55 and Adam Davies 62 until a fl urry of late wickets on the dry surface restrict-ed St James’s to a very useful 150, although it proved to be a manage-

able total. Luke Barnard took 3-21 and Dan Smith 1-16. Roff ey replied positively with a 58 run opening stand between Liam Gibson and Rohit Jagota, both scoring 30, then a quick-fi re unbeaten 50, including 5 fours and a six from Chris Webb, boosted by 24 extras featuring 14 wides and a no ball, got Roff ey home with 12 balls to spare.

Roff ey skipper Matt Davies told us: “This was a fairly straight-forward win for us. Barney (Luke Barnard) bowled well again – he was the pick of the bowlers – and then our batsmen did what was re-quired, Chris Webb was particularly outstanding.”

Roff ey are pleased to have a home draw - against Hastings - in the Quarter Final on Sunday July 3, 15.30 start, following Roff ey 2nd X’s QF versus Hastings 2s (12 noon) .

High scoring Horsham increasetheir leadSaturday June 4 - Sussex Pre-mier LeagueHorsham 274-5 (58 overs) - Hastings & St. Leonard’s Priory 161 All Out (47.4 overs) Horsham won by 113 runs

CricketMartin Read - Sports Reporter

Another big win puts Horsham in the driving seat, boosting their margin at the top of the table by 37 points over current runners up Cuckfi eld and 41 over third placed Preston Nomads (who have a game in hand).

Horsham won the toss and, batting fi rst, had reached 27 when Joe Ludlow was run out. But that brought England U17 player Tom Haines to the crease and he bat-ted the remainder of the innings, completing a fi ne, patient un-beaten century in the fi nal over of Horsham’s allocation. Jofra Arch-er made 45 and Captain James Johnson an enterprising 50, after which his brother Tom contrib-uted a typically rapid 20 to enable Horsham to set a demanding 275 target. Jofra Archer, restricted by a rib injury, then bowled frugally, taking 2-17, sharing the opening attack with David Crowshaw (3-34). Tom Johnson took 1-16, a run out accounting for another scalp, but it was a marathon economical spell from Michael Munday – 3-59 off 18.4 overs – that sealed Hast-ings’ fate.

James Johnson told the District Post: “It’s early days yet, but we’re in a great position and I’ll certainly settle for that. Our next games are against Worthing and Billingshurst, both of whom are struggling at the moment, but we’ll be without some key players because of Sussex considera-tions and other factors so we’re not taking anything for granted.” Tom Haines at the end of fi ve consecutive days of cricket and in the Sussex 2nd XI line up at Hor-sham after a much needed day’s rest said: “My job today was just to bat through and I’m pleased that I was able to do that,” while Michael Munday added: “The wicket wasn’t doing much so, considering that they were too far behind to win the game, I couldn’t understand why they were playing such attacking shots at the end.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham travel to eighth placed Worthing, who have just one win from six starts.

Fine Rohit hundred but Roff ey thwarted

Saturday June 4 - Sussex Premier LeagueRoff ey 242-7 declared (54.1 overs) Preston Nomads 244-6 (51.1 overs)

Preston Nomads won by 4 wick-ets

CricketMartin Read - Sports Reporter

Despite an excellent Rohit Jagota century enabling Roff ey to post a challenging 243 run target they were beaten by hosts Preston Nomads because of another hundred – from Nomads’ Aaron Philips.

Roff ey lost early wickets but recovered from 27-3, Rohit scoring 112 off 124 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Liam Gibson chipped in with 38 and Chris Webb 37, Roff ey declaring to allow themselves three extra overs to bowl out Nomads. The reply started steadily but No-mads then lost four quick wickets to leave themselves in trouble on 118-5, until an 85 run stand put them in sight of victory, which they achieved with few further alarms. Luke Barnard took 4-98 off 20

overs, Jagota and George Fleming fi nishing with one apiece.

Roff ey skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “Rohit batted superbly and I thought we’d got enough runs – it would have been enough if we’d bowled a bit better – we didn’t quite create enough pres-sure. And, unfortunately I dropped their centurion behind the stumps when he was in his forties, which didn’t help! We got 13 points so it wasn’t a total disaster, but it was disappointing to lose to one of our rival challengers.”

In need of a win after suff er-ing two rare back to back league defeats, sixth-placed Roff ey return home tomorrow (Saturday) to take on Bexhill, one spot above them in the table, also with two successes from fi ve games.
