“The VITA program
has given our members
the opportunity to go
beyond the textbook
and into real life issues
such as identity theft
and the
countermeasures the
IRS has taken in
response.”
For the last three Saturdays this
past January, several Beta Alpha Psi
members were engaged in intense train-
ing to participate in the IRS Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance Program. In or-
der to volunteer for this program, our
members underwent rigorous certifica-
tion training and testing on tax prepara-
tion techniques. Once certified, we were
able to help low-income taxpayers throughout different communities in need
of quality tax preparation.
We are extremely proud to rep-
resent FIU and our prestigious organiza-
tion, Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), in the IRS
VITA Program this 2012 tax season end-
ing April 15, 2013. Although FIU was
officially sponsoring two sites near cam-
pus, many of our members volunteered
in several sites throughout Miami-Dade
and Broward Counties based on their
home location and availability. BAP adopted the West Miami site located at
901 SW 62nd Avenue where many of our
members are currently assisting hundreds
of taxpayers file their income tax returns.
According to Ana Raposo, IRS Senior
Tax Consultant, to date the West Miami
site has transmitted 162 returns, with 7
rejects and a site volume growth of 8.4
percent from last year. These statistics
make us extremely proud of our involve-
ment in the community and this program.
During a recent visit to our cam-
pus by Carl Allegretti, Deloitte Tax Chair-
man and CEO, Mr. Allegretti took a mo-
ment to encourage our members and fellow
FIU students to get involved in programs
like this which help strengthen bonds with
our community and give us the opportunity to help those in need.
In my own personal case, with
approximately ten years of professional
experience filing tax returns for individu-
als, it is always gratifying to be able to help
those less fortunate in our community
while constantly learning something new.
Overall, the VITA program has given our
members the opportunity to go beyond the
textbook and into real life issues such as
identity theft and the countermeasures the
IRS has taken in response. The closing ceremony for the
VITA program is scheduled for the first
week of May 2013 here at FIU. Those
looking to get involved in VITA in the fu-
ture are encouraged to reach me at rde-
[email protected]. Looking forward to see
more and more of you involved next tax
season!

On Friday February 15,
2013, Deloitte & Touché LLP
gave us a presentation on 10
things we would have done dif-
ferently if we would have known then. The presentation was filled
with suggestions that Deloitte
felt we should consider in order
to help us become prominent
professionals in the future. Abi
Auslander, our new Deloitte
campus recruiter, was very thor-
ough when elaborating on each
topic. The topics were both com-
mon and relatable. For example,
a topic that many of us can em-
pathize with is “understanding, not cramming.” I for one could
relate to the example given of
staying up late before an exam to
try to understand six weeks’
worth of lectures in one night!
The presentation included feed-
back and valuable advice from
Jessica Santis, Deloitte’s tax
manager, as well as the familiar
face of Kahlil Osborne, audit
manager. Many students had questions and Deloitte kept its
promise to keep it as interactive as
possible, especially with the prizes.
Other familiar faces included the
hard-working intern duo of Caro-
lina Jaramillo and Eduardo Aiello, who boasted that despite all the
hours they had put in that week,
they were back at FIU for another
Friday night meeting, a place that
had grown all-too-familiar with
from their past semester as E-
Board members. Of course, the
large coffee cups they held may
have been behind that effort! Right
after the presentation, members
and candidates lined up to speak
one-on-one with each associate and intern and they were delighted to
speak with us as well.
What I personally enjoy
about Deloitte is their welcoming
attitude and the exciting atmos-
phere they bring to each FIU Beta
event. Again, on behalf of Beta
Alpha Psi, I want to thank Deloitte
for coming out during their busy
season and await their next visit.
On February 23, 2013
Kahlil Osborne, Audit Manager
at Deloitte, and a colleague
hosted an Excel Workshop for
Beta Alpha Psi members. The two individuals took time out
from their Saturday morning to
demonstrate Microsoft Excel
techniques. They did not want
to just show common tricks and
tips for using Excel but instead
asked students if they wanted to
focus on anything in particular.
Many students raised their
hands and asked them to put
more emphasis on macros, for-
mulas, and shortcuts. This two-hour workshop
focused on Excel illustrated
techniques that all business
majors should know. The work-
shop was interactive and fea-
tured Beta members demon-
strating what they learned.
The two representatives were
knowledgeable on the subject and
were capable of teaching it to
students. Excel can be challenging
for some students to handle, but their expertise and teaching skills
made it easy for everyone to fol-
low and understand. They went
through all the topics that mem-
bers wanted to go over and those
essential for young business pro-
fessionals to know. After all the
topics were discussed, they had a
scenario with data on a spread-
sheet and the group participated
and planned what formulas and
techniques to use. Overall, the Excel Work-
shop that Deloitte planned for
Beta Alpha Psi members was very
helpful. Everyone who attended
the workshop walked away with
useful skills that they can use in
their classes or future careers.

“[Mr. Allegretti]
offered me valuable
insight and advice on
the best manner to
prepare during the
recruiting season.”
During the Deloitte Tax Presentation,
members of Beta Alpha Psi, ALPFA, and the
School of Accounting gathered to listen to
Deloitte Tax Chairman and CEO, Mr. Carl Al-
legretti. Mr. Allegretti gave an amazing
speech that began with the highlights of his
career in Public Accounting. He explained the
changes that have come about in the profession
throughout the years. He began his address by
mentioning that he never had aspirations of
going to college. However, that quickly
changed after one summer of working in a blast
furnace in Gary, Indiana. Soon after that sum-
mer, he enrolled in college and obtained a de-
gree in accounting. The fact that we must al-
ways be prepared for change was one of the
most important themes he stressed and was one
of the most valuable pieces of advice that I took
away from his speech. He emphasized that
those who refuse to change run the risk of fal-
ling behind, or as he phrased it, “wither and
die.”
Mr. Allegretti had a tremendous pres-
ence as he spoke and stressed how important it is
to have passion in whatever you do. However,
he also mentioned how important it is to main-
tain a good work-life balance. A testament to
this passion and work-life balance is the fact that
he hasn’t missed a workout since Christmas Day
2010 nor has he missed any of his sons wrestling
matches. He said that although he loves his job,
he is a Dad first and foremost and spoke of the
life-altering day his son was diagnosed with
Leukemia and the recovery that brought him
closer to his family.
At the conclusion of his speech, we had
a Q&A session and were allowed to interact with
Mr. Allegretti on a personal level. I met with
him and I can say that he was very knowledge-
able and professional. He offered me valuable
insight and advice on the best manner to prepare
during the recruiting season. In closing, I would
like to thank Mr. Carl Allegretti for coming out
and allowing us the opportunity to meet with
him and the rest of the Deloitte staff that were in
attendance.

the intern to lead a team of their own.
Macy’s directed the meeting by out-
lining the different company functions and
describing a typical day within that depart-
ment. The group activity that Macy’s per-formed included a staffing scenario where we
teamed up to brainstorm ideas. There was a
list of six hypothetical staff members with
their names, ages, sales performance, items
per transaction, and sales averages. We had to
analyze each individual and deduce their
skills, personality traits, etc. The next task was
to assign each person to a department that we
thought would be the best fit for that person
and for Macy’s. I have never participated in
this type of activity that Macy’s planned for
us. This definitely gave me a better perspec-tive of the company’s expectations and what
we could encounter.
Do you imagine a job where part
of work is going to happy hour,
attending Miami Heat and Miami
Marlins home games and various
concerts throughout the year? On February 8, of 2013, Beta Alpha
Psi members learned about the
fun way TEKsystems does busi-
ness.
It was a fun and informational
session offered by two of the
company’s representatives; one
from sales and one from recruit-
ing. At the end of the presentation
there was a Q&A session. TEK-
systems taught us their way of building long-term relationships
and innovative ways to build trust
with their clients. TEKsystems
offer information technologies
solutions to businesses. The com-
pany’s sales personnel build rela-
about Recruiting and Sales open-
ings, visit their site
www.teksystemscareers.com or
attend one of the TEKsystems’
Open House. TEKsystems was voted by FORTUNE Magazine as
one of “100 Best Companies to
Work for.” TEKsystems is hiring
in all states with 100 offices na-
tionwide and more opportunities
worldwide, including its corporate
headquarters located near Balti-
more, Maryland. Some of the
services offered by TEKsystems
are: IT Staffing Solutions, IT Tal-
ent Management, and IT Services.
Those who are goal-oriented, self-driven, and like to have fun
should check out the opportunities
available with TEKsystems.
Macy’s presentation informed stu-
dents about potential internships and featured
an entertaining activity. There is an eight-
week internship available for students during
the summer. The internship allows students who want a career in sales to shadow a sales
manager at a Macy’s department store. They
can also interview with different executives
and discuss future possibilities within the
company.
The internship that drew the most
attention was the Executive Department Pro-
gram. This program is a full-time work oppor-
tunity that extends for ten weeks. It is more
intense and fast-paced when compared to the
summer internship. Students will engage in
different sales projects and have the ability to move around into more specialized roles. This
will give them greater freedom, help drive
performance to that particular area, and allow
tionships with CIO, IT
Directors, and Information Sys-
tems Executives by spending time
having fun while creating trust-
oriented business relationships. They believe that when trust is
established, the client is more
willing to ask for advice and solu-
tions for their problems. The sales
representative said, “The best
seller is the best listener, and the
best listener can find the pain of a
client and offer a solution.”
TEKSystems’ motto is, “The suc-
cess of our business relies on the
ability and integrity of our people. We are committed to recruiting
the brightest and most driven pro-
fessionals for excellent long-term
career growth.” If anyone is inter-
ested in a career with TEKsys-
tems and wants to learn more

“Mallah Furman’s

such information in
order to benefit Beta

shows their
commitment to the
future leaders of the
industry. ”
My fellow Beta Al-
pha Psi members and I were
lucky enough to attend an
on-site meeting hosted by
Mallah Furman. This meet-
ing enabled us to gain in-
sight into an accounting
firm’s work-environment.
Upon entering the office, we
were ushered into the con-
ference room overlooking
the Miami shoreline and
Biscayne Bay. Large yachts
and jet skis sped by and
served as the quintessential
Miami backdrop. I couldn’t
help but smile as I envi-
sioned life as an accountant
in this city.
As the meeting be-
gan, my peers and I soaked
in the invaluable knowl-
edge offered by Mallah
Furman’s accountants and
representatives. Mallah
Furman’s accountants
spoke of their experiences
within public accounting
and spoke on a range of
subjects from the firm’s
culture and the effect of
this culture on their work
environment, to their out-
look on the future of the
industry. The on-site meet-
ing offered the type of in-
sider glimpse into the in-
dustry that we could only
experience through leader-
ship programs and intern-
ships. In addition, Mallah
Furman’s accountants/
representatives willingness
to share such information
in order to benefit Beta Al-
pha Psi members shows
their commitment to the
future leaders of the indus-
try. All things considered,
Mallah Furman’s culture is
one driven by aspirations to
continue to improve while
acknowledging their ac-
complishments.

The evening of Febru-
ary 22nd was an exciting one
as Cherry Bekaert LLP ar-
rived to showcase an exciting
presentation. The home-
grown accounting firm began
by giving us all a little history
lesson. CB&H ranks as one
of the largest firm nationally;
it includes over 700 profes-
sionals working towards the
common goals of commitment
and innovative growth.
Through its alliance with
Baker Tilly International,
CB&H is better able to ex-
pand its resources and exper-
tise to create the finest prac-
tice.
The firm was also ex-
tremely thrilled to announce
that it will be hosting Connect
Leadership Program, designed
to help students better prepare
for the future challenges faced
by accountants. The Connect
Leadership Program will al-
low students to network with
accounting professionals from
all areas including Audit, Tax,
and Advisory. This program
is targeted towards sopho-
mores and juniors to guide
them in the right track and
provides leadership and team-
building opportunities.
CB&H has provided first-
class accounting services to
an up-and-coming client base.
I believe that CB&H values
Cherry Bekaert LLP’s presen-tation educated accounting ma-
jors with knowledge about the
firm, opportunities within the
firm and important guidelines on what not to do throughout the
college recruiting process. This
prestigious accounting firm was founded over 60 years ago in
Wilmington, North Carolina and
provides services in the south-east coast of the United States.
Their profitability has increased
over 10 percent in the past year
and the firm hopes to continue that growth. In fact, their goal for
the next five years is to have
revenues exceed $200 million and to employ 150 more people
in their five practice units. The firm offered stu-
dents tips to benefit them during
the college recruiting process.
Representatives from Cherry Bekaert warned us of the com-
mon mistakes they encounter at
career fairs and during inter-views. Among them: being a
know-it-all, making unprofes-
sional fashion statements, failing to ask questions, not taking the
interview seriously, getting too
comfortable, playing hard to get,
ending on a bad note and, per-haps most-importantly, not en-
joying the process.
The internships and full-time job opportunities that the
firm offers open in Fall 2013. Cherry Bekaert LLP promoted a
summer leadership program
from July 14-16 in Tampa, Flor-
ida and spoke of the exciting activities the firm has planned
for sophomores and juniors who
wish to apply. The advice the firm offered should make those
in attendance better prepared
for these opportunities.

The Finance Summit was held on
March 22, 2013 and finance majors were in
full attendance. The summit consisted of a
discussion panel with five representatives.
The five representatives were: William Sager of Merrill Lynch, Travis Robinson of
the Federal Reserve, Hernan Vera of Sales
Outcome, Joseph Dell of TD Bank and
Andres Garcia of J.P. Morgan.
There were five pre-planned ques-
tions that each representative answered. The
final question asked was, “If there is one
piece of advice you would provide to stu-
dents, what would it be?” Mr. Sager replied
that students should be involved in some-
thing, to move forward and to go beyond the
ordinary. Mr. Robinson said to have per-sonal branding; to have brand recognition.
This essentially means to differentiate your-
self from others and be recognized for
unique personal characteristics. Mr. Vera
answered that students should seek direct
feedback and be receptive of that feedback.
Finally, he stressed about having integrity
and being honest. Mr. Dell responded that
students should approach their work and
studies with a positive attitude and give
their maximum effort. Finally, Mr. Garcia replied that it is imperative to find yourself,
have passion, take risks and value the peo-
ple around you.
This particular question was capti-
vating because of the unique responses.
Students heard the different perspectives of
each representative and gained something
from each. After the last question was
asked, the audience had the opportunity to
ask the panel questions.
All in all, the Finance Summit was
an intriguing event that relied on the differ-ent experiences of the professionals. They
also provided valuable information for stu-
dents to take with them throughout their
FIU experience.
McGladrey is the fifth largest provider of
assurance, tax, and consulting services in the United
States. The main topic that the firm focused on dur-
ing their presentation was networking. Later
through the presentation, students were informed about leadership programs, internships, and full-
time job opportunities.
According to representatives from
McGladrey, “Success in the business world comes
from success in networking.” The first tip to net-
working is to do your research beforehand; find out
what the company does and some specific aspects
of that company that interests you. The second tip is
to rehearse your elevator speech or any questions
that you may want to ask a recruiter. The next step
is to make a great first impression. It is vital to be
presentable by wearing proper attire, having good posture and other aspects related to appearance. The
fourth step is to communicate well. The firm
stressed the importance of being a better listener
than speaker. The final step is to follow-up after you
meet with a company. One way to accomplish this
is to take notes after your conversation so that when
you follow-up, you can reference some of the topics
that you talked about. In the end, we put these skills
into practice as everyone in the audience was paired
into large groups and acted out different scenarios
that are common throughout the recruiting process. In the end, we voted on which of the ten teams
acted their scenario in the most comical and infor-
mative manner.
McGladrey hosts a summer leadership
program that is a two to three-day event and offered
to students who plan on graduating within two
years. A summer/spring internship is available to
students the summer before their last year in col-
lege. This is a hands-on, paid internship that is ap-
proximately eight to twelve weeks. There are also
full-time opportunities within the assurance, tax and
advisory practices. McGladrey directed a great pres-entation and educated students with information that
will be beneficial to them in the business world. The
leadership programs, internships, and full-time jobs
that they offer are great opportunities for accounting
majors.

“Relay For Life
brought awareness,
hope and above all,
love and comfort to
those who
participated”
March 1, 2013 marked the
9th Annual Relay For Life fund-
raising event at FIU’s Modesto
Maidique Campus, an event
which remembers and celebrates
the lives of cancer victims and
survivors. The theme was Disney
and the re-creation of the Magic
Kingdom experience. Beta Alpha
Psi partnered with the School of
Business and their theme: A
Bug’s Life. There were several
activities, performances, a movie
projected onto a big screen, a
bounce house and or course, lots
of food. There was something fun
for everyone including fraternities
stepping, live performances and
samurai wresting. Everyone did
their best to raise as much money
as they could. In the end, the
event managed to raise more than
$90,000 for the American Cancer
Society, an FIU record. All the
fun activities did not take away
from the true meaning of the Re-
lay for Life—to have a cancer-free
world.
As my friends and I walked
around the tracks, we witnessed
hundreds of candles in bags with a
name of someone who battled can-
cer. Each name honored the individ-
ual who bravely fought cancer.
There was also a luminary cere-
mony where we had a moment of
silence. It was a very emotional mo-
ment as other students
shared their personal
stories, poems and
music for their love
ones affected by can-
cer.
FIU Relay for
Life 2013 brought
people together for a
cause that affects mil-
lions of lives all over
the world. It brought
awareness, hope and
above all, love and
comfort to those who partici-
pated.

On February 17, 2013 Beta
Alpha Psi held the first of their two
Adopt-A-Road events. Beta Alpha
Psi has adopted the one-mile stretch
on Southwest 117th avenue from Miller Road to Sunset Drive and is
in charge of maintaining it clean.
This event allows candidates, mem-
bers, and extended members to ful-
fill their community service require-
ment. But this isn’t just about meet-
ing a requirement to initiate; it’s
about doing something that makes
an impact in the community. The
event also serves as a great way to
meet the different members of the
organization. Adopt-A-Road begins with
members convening at our site in
the early morning. Once there,
members equipped with large trash
bags, protective gloves and fluores-
cent safety-vests divide into two
separate groups to clean road-side
debris. With the two groups taking
care of each side of the road, the
process becomes much faster and
more efficient. Once the roads are
cleaned, the group merges into one and walks together. Members com-
pare the amount each cleaned up
while learning more about each
other and the organization.
Overall, participating in
Adopt-A-Road is rewarding. Every-
one who participates knows that
they are doing a good deed for the
community. Also, the way the or-
ganization gives back to the local
community gives people a positive
outlook of who we are. It not only is an event to give back to the commu-
nity, but a great way for members to
catch up and strengthen a bond.
I remember the day like it
was yesterday – walking onto Flor-
ida International University’s cam-
pus with so many thoughts inside
my head. I was taking the account-ing entrance exam the next day. The
day before, however, I was walking
into Beta Alpha Psi’s tutoring ses-
sion entrance exam review session.
This was my first encounter with the
amazing organization which has
given me so many opportunities
since then. On that day, I met many
wonderful individuals that made me
relax and gave me great tips about
the exam. I passed with flying col-
ors. As the entrance exam re-
view session came this semester
(March 23rd), I figured it was my
time to give back. This time I went
to help, not ask for it, and made
everyone realize that if I could do it,
they could too. I believe that this
review session was beneficial to
everyone. Most of the people I had invited passed and thanked me for
such a great opportunity. People get
to review for the exam with their
peers, which is always a stress-
reliever, and simultaneously learn
about an amazing organization, Beta
Alpha Psi.
I still remember the day
like it was yesterday and I am glad I
went to that review session almost a
year ago.
