How should I dress for the prairie? We advise all visitors to the prairie to wear closed- toed shoes (such as boots, tennis shoes, etc.) and long pants for your comfort and protection. We also advise you to bring water - there’s almost always a breeze on the prairie, and this can dry you out quickly. Lastly, make sure to pack a comfortable hat to shade you from the sun. It’s also best to bring some sunscreen and bug repellent as well. KPC EVENTS Spring Schedule Where in the world is the Katy Prairie? The Katy Prairie once blanketed 500-750 thousand acres of land west of Houston. Today, much of the prairie has been developed but the Katy Prairie Conservancy has protected nearly 20,000 acres since 1992 (in green).
