DESCRIPTION

A new generation is on the rise: the digital generation, born into a digital world. How are they interacting with technology? Fifty-one percent of households with a 3- to 15-year-old have a tablet. Forty-two percent of the children in those households are using tablets, and 28 percent of 3- to 4-year-olds use a tablet in the home. In contrast, only seven percent of households with kids and teenagers had a tablet in 2011. These young users have access to smartphones too, sometimes even their own phones. Twenty-seven percent of children 5- to 15-years-old use a smartphone to access the Internet, but texting is by far the most popular activity. Among 8- to 11-year-olds, 94 percent texted from their phone, and among 12- to 15-year-olds, it increases to 96 percent. The older group uses their phones for more activities like sending and receiving pictures and making phone calls. Internet usage among children and teens is also high. Ninety-two percent of 12- to 15-year-olds, and even 29 percent of 3- to 4-year-olds use the Internet. The rate of abstinence from the Internet is 60 percent for the 3- to 4-year-old group, but only seven percent for the 12- to 15-year-old group. But parents are taking note. Ninety percent of children have received advice for how to stay safe online, and 79 percent of parents have talked to their child about staying safe, including 45 percent that do so monthly.
