Congratulations Bo and ThazinThe Committee and management team would like to extend a huge congratulations to Bo and his new wife Thazin who were married in early January. We wish them all the best for a wonderful future together and hope members will take the opportunity to congratulate Bo when next in the Club.

Thank you to Bo for sharing this stunning photo taken on their special day.

President’s LetterAlthough summer is winding down there is no slowing down of activities taking place at the Club.

The last part of March saw 180 members and guests attend a breakfast to be updated on the America’s Cup and to assist fundraising for the Red Bull America’s Cup NZL Sailing Team

who will be competing in Bermuda immediately prior to the Cup. We were fortunate to have Emirates Team New Zealand Skipper Glenn Ashby, helmsman Peter Burling and technical director Dan Bernasconi join Peter Lester in a fascinating conversation. During the breakfast $13,000 was raised to assist the youth team.

In the same week a large number of Adele fans took advantage of pre-concert entertainment at the Club and transfers to Mt Smart Stadium and back for each of her three concerts. A smaller group of Northern Club “Beliebers” had gone to the same venue not long before to see Justin Bieber.

This April Diary has more events for your interest. Of particular note is the Officers’ Club sponsored Anzac Day breakfast following the dawn ceremony at the Cenotaph at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. All members of the Northern Club and their guests are warmly invited.

Applications to join the Club continue to be strong. Recent new members or current nominees range from several in their early twenties to Chief Executives of leading New Zealand companies,

Northern Club Racing SyndicateBelle Du NordThe Northern Club Racing Syndicate scored a notable win with their 2 year old filly Belle du Nord at her 3rd start at Trentham in the 2 year old Premier race in March. She produced a powerful finishing sprint winning by almost 4 lengths in a fast time. Another thrill was seeing Lisa Allpress, the jockey, in the Northern Club colours (you may recognise them in the club tie) on Trackside TV and speaking so enthusiastically about the horse when she won. An earlier Northern Club Syndicate raced her dam, Bankside Belle with considerable success. Bankside Belle won 8 races and was always a game trier. She was later sold as a broodmare proposition. Her first foal What Choux Want was a successful 2 year old.

Former Club President and founder of the Northern Club Racing Syndicates, Sir David Williams saw her next foal for sale at Karaka in January 2016. He asked member and bloodstock agent Michael Otto to inspect and bid on the Reliable Man filly. 20 members then formed the new syndicate within 36 hours!

Trainer, Emmalee Browne is now focused on Group 1 race, the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni Racecourse, Palmerston North on 1 April.

as well as New Zealanders living in Washington DC and London. Almost all have described how they have enjoyed being invited to the Club on previous occasions by family members, friends or business contacts.

For those interested in progress on the Bankside Street Extension Project, the Committee has established a Project Control Group which meets regularly to oversee the project.

The resource consent application is with the Auckland Council for processing and the working drawings are being prepared to allow us to seek a building consent. Negotiations are taking place right now with two selected contractors and we expect to announce the preferred contractor before the Annual General Meeting in May. Physical work on the site will hopefully occur around late July, depending on the Council processing time for the building consent.

Well before construction commences we will update members on alternative travel and parking options. This is for any users of the Bankside Street car park, as it will not be available while construction is taking place. The Princes Street car park will remain operational.

Enjoy using your Club this month and I wish you and your families a happy Easter.

Members’ Lunch with Prof. Michael Corballis ‘The Truth About Language’Wednesday 19 April, 12.45pmWhile birds chirp and monkeys chatter, only humans possess the ability to tell stories and offer explanations, to explain and persuade, to baffle – the extraordinary power that we call language. How come? Where did language come from? In this book, Michael Corballis takes on what has been called the hardest problem in science. From God to Noam Chomsky, many have suggested that language arose suddenly in a way that cannot be explained through ordinary evolutionary processes. Corballis argues otherwise. An internationally renowned, award winning psychologist and author of eleven books, Michael’s fields of study include cognitive neuroscience, visual perception, visual imagery, attention, memory and the evolution of language. $45 per person includes two-course lunch with wine.

Pink Ribbon BreakfastTuesday 2 May, 7.15amTragically, one in every nine New Zealand women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime.
