III The Effects of Defeat in Japan•Cities destroyed by Allied bombing &

stripped away lands that had belonged to Japan for centuries•MacArthur in charge of US occupation• Began demilitarization= disbanding of the

Japanese armed forces• Then democratization= process of creating

a government elected by the people• MacArthur creates a new constitution

IV U.S. Occupation Brings Deep Changes• New constitution emperor declares he’s

not god• Now just a symbol like GB’s king

• 2 house parliament = Diet• Bill of rights• Art.9 = no longer make war. Only fight if

attacked•WWII changed pol. & Physical landscape• Some countries weaker & other stronger
