The Design Process
Courtney Robertson
What are the two types of design? (List and define)
• Artistic Design: the type of design artists normally do
• Engineering Design: used to create plans for solutions
On which two aspects of design does artistic design focus? (List and define)
• Content: topic, information, or emotion that the artist is trying to communicate
• Form: how the solution looks or sounds
On which two aspects of design does engineering design focus? (List and define)
• Form: how the solution looks• Function: how the solution works
What are the two main categories of engineering design? (List and define)
• System Design: involves organizing different parts to solve a problem
• Product Design: the creation of products meeting human needs and wants
What are the eight steps of the Engineering Design Process?
• 1: Identify the problem• 2: Research the problem• 3: Creating solutions to the problem• 4: Selecting and refining the solution• 5: Modeling the solution• 6: Testing the solution• 7: Communicating the solution• 8: Improving the solution
What is a Design Brief? (Use the following words in
your explanation: problem statement, constraints, criteria)
• The designer creates the design brief to guide the entire design process. The design brief includes the criteria and constraints of the design.
How are solutions created? (Use the following words in your
explanation: ideation, graphic organizers, rough sketches, pictorial sketches)
• Brainstorming ideas, filling out graphic organizers, rough sketches and pictorial sketches.
• Rough sketches get the ideas onto paper.• Pictorial sketches show how the object would
look to the eye
What is rendering? (Use the internet to find an
example of a rendering and paste it on this slide.) • Rendering: sketch that is shaded and colored
in full color
What is a detailed sketch? (Use the internet to find
an example of a detailed sketch and paste it on this slide.)
• Detailed Sketch: drawn using the sizes of the proposed solution. Includes dimensions.
What is a model and what is its purpose in the engineering design process?
• Model: used to communicate ideas, experiment with concepts and organize data.
• They allow people to actually feel and touch the object
What is the difference between a mock-up and a prototype?
• Mock-up: appearance models• Prototypes: physical models that actually
function
What is sustainable design? (page 232)
• Sustainable design: a design movement incorporating a wide view of products and their connections to humans and the environment.
This slide is simply an example of how to complete the slides that follow. You do not have to do anything to this slide!
