On Friday, September 20th, students from Deering High School participated in the Climate Strike and Teach-In at City Hall, joining hundreds of other such protests around the world. Students from Anne Dixon and Andrew Gordon's Global Issues class, Ann Hall's AP Language and Composition class, and members from Environmental Club, led by Catherine Bursk, attended the rally. In the bright and notably warm afternoon, students listened to a series of youth activists who addressed the crowd of hundreds about the need for swift action on climate change. In the coming months, students in Global Issues will study the world-wide impacts of climate change, while students in AP Language and Composition will study the history of environmentalism and the ways in which rhetoric can be used to spur action and social change.

Welcome to Hannaford Helps Schools 2019!

Deering High School’s assigned store is the Forest Avenue Hannaford. Last year we received over $300.00 for our students…

This fall, we celebrate 20 years of the Hannaford Helps Schools program! Since the program's inception, we've raised more than $12 million to help schools and school kids reach their goals. Between 8/25 and 11/30, with the purchase of 4 participating Hannaford Helps Schools items, a customer will receive a printout for 3 School Dollars at the register. The customer can place that printout into your school's slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools collection tower which is located at the front of the store that your school is registered with.

Page 5: The Deering Weekly Update...The Deering Weekly Update On Friday, September 20th, students from Deering High School participated in the Climate Strike and Teach-In at City Hall, joining

Customers who shop with Hannaford To Go can give their School Dollar printouts to the associate handling their groceries and let them know which school slot to put them in.

This year, Hannaford will also donate $1,000 to the highest earning school per store.

NEW this year – your school may have a chance to earn DOUBLE School Dollars! The Hannaford store that has the highest increase of School Dollars turned in will DOUBLE the payouts to all its registered schools. Help your school earn double School Dollars by reminding parents to deposit their School Dollar printouts in the tower at the front of the store.

2019-20 Seal of Biliteracy Testing

For the 3rd year, Portland Public Schools will be providing free testing for students interested in pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy.

Page 6: The Deering Weekly Update...The Deering Weekly Update On Friday, September 20th, students from Deering High School participated in the Climate Strike and Teach-In at City Hall, joining

This recognition is now state-wide and Deering High School holds the distinction of having had the most students earn this award at graduation (13 students in 2018 and 26 students in 2019). In addition to the recognition, the Seal means that students are eligible for college credits for their language assets.

Our first round of testing will be:

Wed, Oct 16 (after school, location TBD)

Sat. Oct 20 (morning, location TBD)

We encourage Juniors and Seniors who have proficiency in both English and another language to pursue this opportunity. While there is another round of testing in March, we recommend students test in the fall so that they can be prepared for college or job applications.

 ● Maine Medical Center’s Health Career Pipeline Program is “an effort to reach out to

diverse youth and young adults in all Maine communities to enhance and stimulate an interest in health careers and encourage individuals to keep those careers in Maine.” Students 16 or older can set up job shadowing experiences. ● MIT’s annual SPLASH Weekend will take place November 23rd and 24th. For one awesome weekend each November, thousands of high schoolers flood MIT’s campus to take classes, taught by MIT students, on anything and everything. Splash offerings number over 400 every year and span a wide variety of areas. Want to take a class on origami? Lasers? Neuropharmacology? Over the course of 19 hours during Splash, students can get their feet wet with a short introduction to any number of subjects—things they’ve always wanted to learn and topics they never knew existed—or they can dive head first into an in-depth seminar or intensive workshop. In addition to normal classes, Splash also offers walk-in activities: hands-on events where you can show up or leave whenever you want. Walk-ins are great for filling gaps in your schedule, and they don’t require you to sign up in advance (although you must be registered for Splash to attend). Registration opens in late October. Create an account now to receive an email about when registration opens. Check out course offerings from 2018. This event fills up very fast.

 STEM Scholarships:

● University of Maine’s Pulp & Paper Scholarship for those studying engineering or engineering technology. DEADLINE December 31, 2019. This merit-based engineering scholarship is valued at $36,000. Application details and requirements can be found at the provided link.

recommendations written by DHS School Counselors and Teachers are sent out in a timely manner in order to meet college application deadlines

3. How to send official SAT scores to colleges 4. Where to go in order to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal

Student Aid). The FAFSA site for completing any time on or after Oct. 1 is www.fafsa.gov

5. Upcoming NEACAC College Fair & helpful College Nights coming in Sept/Oct specifically helpful to Seniors and their Parents (this info is listed below in this newsletter).

Over 200 colleges and universities from all over the U.S. and Canada will be at this event to talk to students/parents. This is a super opportunity for parents and students

to meet college representatives face to face. Get your questions answered about admissions, application procedures, campus life, and financial aid. This event is for students of all grades and is especially perfect for JUNIORS and SENIORS that are

trying to narrow down their college choices.

CANADIAN COLLEGE FAIR

Did You Know that Canadian Colleges are Significantly Less Expensive to Attend than the Majority of our Colleges & Universities here in the US?    It’s True!   The average yearly cost of tuition in US dollars at Canadian schools are between $20,000-$35,000 . This is far less than the average yearly cost of tuition in the US which is $25,200 (in-state) -$50,000 (private or out of state public universities).  The Canadian Consulate of Boston is sponsoring a Canadian College Fair right here in Portland that includes over 16 excellent Colleges and Universities. Bring your child to this event to check out superb academic institutions who want American students on their campuses at a more reasonable tuition cost.

Click below for all 2019-20 SAT/SUBJECT TEST dates, deadlines and registration info:

12th graders interested in taking an SAT should use the above link to register for either the October 5, November 2, or December 7 test dates. Taking the SAT/Subject Tests after the December test date may jeopardize making college application deadlines. 11th Graders will be taking the SAT at Deering in April, however any Junior can register for an SAT or Subject Test prior to that April date. A number of Juniors choose to take the SAT one, two, sometimes even three times in order to get comfortable with the test. As they become more familiar with the actual test, they learn where their strengths and weaknesses are and can utilize Khan Academy for FREE practice in order to improve their test scores for college admission and heightened opportunities to get more merit scholarships.  Test Date Registration Deadline Late Registration (additional fee) NOV 2, 2019 OCT. 3 , 2019 OCT. 22, 2019 DEC 7, 2019 NOV 8, 2019 NOV 19, 2019 MAR 14, 2019 FEB 14, 2019 FEB 25, 2020

$$$ .    Here are some reputable resources for scholarship searches: FAME (the Financial Authority of Maine) lists many scholarship and financial aid resources on their website (famemaine.com ). Look through the Maine Scholarships list and have your student apply to several. This is the best site we have found for advice on paying for college. MES is another scholarship resource, as in the Maine Community Foundation .  We found a good resource for scholarship information from Reviews.com. This is a website “dedicated to conducting data driven and unbiased research about topics that can help make an impact in people's lives.” Below is a link that covers the best scholarship search sites, what you should know about scholarships, and how best to apply, etc: Reviews.com scholarship search
