    Weekly Update March 1, 2012www.mothercabrini.org www.cabrinifoundation.org

National Shrine of St. Frances X CabriniSet to Reopen in September

For generations to come, it will seem an odd placefor a shrine: tucked in the shadow of a high-risecondo building in an affluent area of Chicagos

    Lincoln Park.

But the National Shrine of St. Frances XavierCabrini, scheduled to reopen September 30, marksthe spot where Mother Cabrini, the first Americancitizen to be canonized and the universalPatroness of Immigrants, died.

The shrine building, constructed as an addition toColumbus Hospital in 1955, closed in 2002 afterthe hospital closed and was sold to developers.

It will reopen this fall with a new entranceway andlobby built as part of the ground floor of theneighboring condo building and with a newmission, said Sister Joan McGlinchey, a member ofthe General Council of the Missionary Sisters ofthe Sacred Heart, the order Mother Cabrinifounded and brought to the United States in 1889.Construction continues on the National Shrine

of St. Frances X. Cabrini in Chicagos LincolnPark.

Mother Cabrini died in 1917 and was canonized in 1946, and she had such a wide following thatCardinal Samuel Stritch, Chicagos archbishop from 1939 to 1958, helped build the shrine at

Columbus Hospital nine years later, Sister Joan said.

When the hospital was open, the shrine served as a hospital chapel as well as a place of pilgrimage. Itwas always supported by the hospital, even after the hospital itself became part of Catholic HealthPartners and the sisters retained ownership of the attached shrine.

When it reopens, Mass will be offered every weekend, and the shrine will be primarily a place ofprayer and pilgrimage. There were pilgrims before as well, said Father Theodore Ploplis, who

became rector of the shrine when he was hired as chaplain of Columbus Hospital in 1987. He heldthat post until 2001 and will return to it this year.

This was a place where a holy person lived, worked and died, said Father Ploplis, who currently isa chaplain at nearby St. Joseph Hospital.

There will be a relic room in the new entrance space, Sister Joan said, and the first-class relic ofMother Cabrini an arm bone will be returned to the altar.

Its not a museum, she told the Catholic New World, Chicagos archdiocesan newspaper. But it isa place where we will have people visiting to learn about MotherCabrini.

Father Ploplis also hopes to welcome non-Catholics andnonbelievers who might want to see the art and architecture of theshrine, which features walls made of Carrara marble, excavatedfrom the same quarry used by Michelangelo; frescoes depicting thelife of Mother Cabrini; and an Italian pipe organ, the only one of itskind in the United States. He hopes they will find a sense of peacethere.

Fr. Ploplis and the MSCs plan to work with Catholic schools andwith the Chicago-area immigrant community, Sister Joan said.

The sisters, meanwhile, are very much trusting in God as theywork to create a viable plan to sustain the shrine. Their numbers inChicago have dwindled to six, and they dont have the financialresources to operate the shrine on their own.

Its a challenge, but it will make a contribution to the church herein Chicago, Sister Joan said.

    One Minute Meditation

    Hope

Hope is not just one single quality or promise. Hope has to do with believing

beyond today. Hope encourages me to follow my dreams. Hope trusts that what

is happening will eventually make sense or if it never does become meaningful, it

will offer an opportunity for growth.

Hope encourages my heart not to give up and nudges me when its time to

move on. Hope accepts mystery and offers the gift of solid trust in the unknown.

Hope tucks promises of growth inside the pockets of my struggles.Joyce Rupp ~ Dear Heart, Come Home

Mother Cabrini High School, New York, NYStudent Musicians Perform at The Fort Tryon Center for Nursing:

A First, a Second and Looking Forward to a Third

With Sr. Mary Ann Hawes, MSC (c.) at the podium conducting and Mr. AndrewBauer, choir director, (r.) on keyboard the bell choir of MCHS brings melodicsounds and smiles to the faces of the residents of the Fort Tryon Center.

Why was this first? It was just down the street at Fort Tryon Center for Nursing and Rehabilitationon 190th Street. And where was the second? It was right there in this wonderful facility whichprovides dedicated and caring service to a diverse population [of residents].

Now, who were the first? It was our wonderful Cabrini Singers who came to perform at thecenter for the first time. Mr. Andrew Bauer, choir director, was duly impressed by the joy andenthusiasm of the roomful of residents. One resident showed her appreciation by conducting ourgirls right along with Andy.

What about the second? That would be our Cabrini Ringers, our hand bell choir, of which I amthe Director (we gave our first performance last spring). We were welcomed back by residents andstaff who remembered our first performance.

What about the third that we are looking forward to? We have beenshown a great terrace which would be ideal for an outside concert inbeautiful spring weather.

Yes, singing and ringing has been a very special community gift to thewonderful Fort Tryon Center where their motto Celebrate the Gift of

Aging was an inspiration to all of us from Cabrini.~ submitted by Sr. Mary Ann Hawes, MSC

Cabrini Mission CorpsWorking with Sisters and Brothers of ImmigrantsI was a stranger and you welcomed me.Since I was a little girl, I remember hearing this passage from the Gospel of Matthew and notunderstanding how to apply it to my life. Sure, I know how to be nice to people, but how do Iwelcome them? I grew up in the Stranger Danger era. I was always told not to speak to strangersbecause they might try to kidnap me or something! So, how was I supposed to live this passage? It always confused me.

Well, Ive had some opportunity toreflect on it recently. Over the pasttwo months, Cabrini Mission Comissioner Gina Allen and I haveworked with a group called Sisters andBrothers of Immigrants (SBI) here inthe Chicago area. We were

immediately put to work onpromotional materials for theirconference on March 31; so, we set

    rps

    l

    before being deported from the

about creating a Facebook page.Every Friday, there is a prayer vigiheld on the front steps of the lastdetention center immigrants go to

United States. We go to these vigils afew times each month where we pray the rosary as a blessing for those being deported and as aprayer for compassionate immigration reform.

Braving the frigid cold of a Chicago winter day, volunteersgather at the detention center to pray for those who are beingdeported.

On our last two visits, we witnessed the buses leaving the detention center to take the deportees tothe airport. First, I was shocked that the buses look like plain, white RVs. If you were passing oneon the street, you would think nothing of it. It angered me that there is such secrecy surroundingthis event. Asthe buspulled out ofthe garage, thosegathered inprayer liftedtheir arms in

    a sign ofsolidarity andblessing for

As arms are raised in solidarity with those being deported, the bus leaves for the airport.

those being forced to leave. This made my heart swell with love and hope that one day this[treatment of immigrants] will change. At the end of each prayer vigil, we hold hands and sing WeShall Overcome. As I look around our group, I see people of all races and ages with hope for thefuture. Even though it is easy to get discouraged and frustrated with the system right now, withhope, faith and hard work, we will overcome it.

Each week during the Lenten Season we will be bringing youreflections written by the Missionary Sisters so that we mayjourney together in prayer.

For the second Sunday in Lent, our reflection is offered bySr. Mary Louise Sullivan, MSC

ReflectionfortheSecondSundayofLentMarch4,2012Sundays reading contains one of my favorite scriptural passages Jesus transfiguration: This is mybeloved son. Listen to him. But first, we are challenged.

In the first reading from Genesis Abrahams faith is tested. He is told to offer his only son Isaac asa holocaust and was willing to do so, but the Lords messenger told Abraham to stop. Hiswillingness was what mattered. Because you acted as you did in not withholding from me yourbeloved son, I will bless you abundantly. What am I holding back from God? Lord, give me thestrength to let go.

Todays Gospel recounts Jesus manifestation of his glory: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.Let us pray that our ears will be open to hear Gods word spoken to us in the cries of the poor, theoppressed yearning to be free, the family member or neighbor in need. Lord Jesus, help me to trustin your mercy and love remembering that Passion leads to the glory of the Resurrection.
