The AHS is a non-profit educational and scientific organization dedicated to promote, encourage, and foster the development of the genus Hemerocallis, commonly known as the daylily. Dear Daylily Friends,

I greet you with 10” of new snow and sparkles of hoar-frost on everything. We have quite a bit of snow here now; so much that I can’t even see the daylily labels in the snow anymore. I’ve had to have my [long] driveway plowed three times just in the past week. I know the plants love it, though, so I’m shoveling without complaining (much)!

As your new AHS Region 1 Director, I will strive to serve this Region and the AHS with all the integrity I can muster. I have been given the Gar-den Judge Records Chair po-sition, which is actually quite a big job. I oversee all the nations’ daylily garden judg-

es: recording Work-shop attendances, approving new judge and instructor ap-plications, chasing down missing appli-cations, processing and updating renew-als, maintaining their name and contact information, track-ing if judges vote and pay dues on time, communicating with all Regional Garden Judge Liaisons and Presidents and the AHS Board, and an-swering general cor-respondence regard-ing Garden Judges.

Right now, I am in the midst of a big project—verifying which Garden Judges have renewed their terms and paid AHS dues on time so they can be mailed the Gar-den Judges ballots by the Awards & Honors Chair this month. So. I’ll. Keep. This. Short.

Big news at AHS is that there will be a new website, com-pliments of a very gener-ous person who donated $10,000 to start the ball rolling last year, and then also recently donated the remaining $9,000 of the bill to get it completed. The new web design will promise eas-ier searches for cultivars, a new streamlined look, more

user-friendly pages, among many things. The new web-site should be up and run-ning by the end of April.

A new Life Membership pay-ment plan was announced. A single member has 6 months to pay, and a dual member-ship has 12 months.

The Garden Judge’s Hand-book has been updated and is available on Amazon.com, as are single copies of other AHS publications.

I look forward to serving you all and AHS, and hope to see you at the Summer Meeting in North Dakota or at the National Convention in Myr-tle Beach, NC! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hello Spring. I know you are just around the corner. We will ignore Phil, back East in Philadelphia, who is such a pessimist about winter lin-gering on this year. The best part of February is getting ready for a new garden sea-son.

First on my list of plans for the new year is to get reser-vations in place for meetings and conventions. The Na-tional Convention begins on June 6 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The national is a bit of a big splurge but is a wonderful opportunity to gather new ideas on landscaping and garden art. Plus, the con-vention is before our peak season, so we will not miss anything in our own gardens.

Region One Regional Meet-ing will be in Mandan, ND this year from July 27 to 29. The Regional Meeting is the time to meet old friends and make new ones. It is also a great opportunity to take Garden Judges Workshops I and II. Whether for credit or audit, the workshops pro-vide an opportunity to learn about daylily standards and how to appraise a daylily. Dr. Scott Elliott has rewritten the

program with new photos and expanded information. The new PowerPoint and manual are easily download-ed from the members’ Por-tal.

My beloved garden is now someone else’s garden, but having it recognized and vis-ited as a national display gar-den brought us immense joy. The day I planted the 'Display Garden’ sign was one of the best days of my life, right up there with graduation from high school. Now is a perfect time to gather photos and o apply for your garden to become a national display garden. I plan to put garden visits on my schedule for this

spring and summer, so apply soon and you, too may have a display garden sign.

Thoughts of garden visits remind me of a quote that sums up my garden philoso-phy:

Hello Daylily Friends,

Today I am watching our biggest storm of the season. Erik is in Fargo for a week as an official ‘timer’ at the 2018 USA Curling Nationals. This tournament will send qualifi-ers to the 2018 World Men’s Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada and the 2018 World Women’s Championship in North Bay, Ontario.

I am happy and warm inside my wonderful writing retreat at my fantasy Storybook Stuc-co cottage.

My summer will be full of threshold events. I am prepar-ing to attend the April Lit-erary Loft ‘Pitch’ conference in Minneapolis, where I will ‘pitch’ my book The Garden of Eaton – Botanical Adventures of Mary Emily Eaton (1873-1961) to agents, editors and publishers. In July, I will be presenting at the Botanical

Society of America annual convention in Rochester, MN. No pressure!

Producing the Daylily Pioneer is still a combination of joy and ago-ny, especially since my Windows 10 crashed last week and I lost all my email, contacts and organizational tools. I keep learning more and more about the Adobe Creative Cloud software InDesign but tend to forget it all in the six months between issues!

I learned last week our street, Avenue C, and several adjoining roads in the Bismarck Historic District are selected for total over-haul this summer. The 2018 Summer Regional Event team will keep you updated on the Region One website about this and other changes, alerts and contact information.

In this issue, you will see a tiny taste of what you will enjoy here in North Dakota this summer, and you KNOW North Dakota puts on a dandy, fun event, so do not miss it!

Please notice the registration form inside the front cover, and the TWO Ballots inside the back cover. This is your opportunity to participate directly in the camaraderie and gardening success of Region One. Garden On!

When my hus-band, Ken, and I bought this two acre property in 2010 it had a 40’ by 40’ square vegetable gar-den (the north 40) and flower beds shaped in an oval, a circle, and a triangle. (the triangle is now sort of egg shaped) My plan had been to down-size the north 40 to at least half its size, which is why the arbor Ken built is at one end of the bed.

But new daylil-ies kept arriv-ing and I just couldn’t give up any of that area.

We did make the small round bed into an area with a fireplace and the oval bed is now a rock bed, which I love as it rarely needs weeding or watering.

I currently grow about 110 named varieties but also have seedlings. The area on the east side of the north 40 is now almost filled with daylilies that will be used in our Summer Regional; many of those will need to be dug a few days before. I have a wide variety of other perennials in the beds. Tall garden phlox in many colors and purple iris are some of my favorites. Various colors of annual poppies, as well as variegated spurge, reseed prolifically and fill in any empty spot. In the spring the

North 40 look amazing when the purple thyme is blooming. Ken likes trees and bushes and we have hundreds on the property.

My home is just three miles north of the Interstate as you come into Bismarck from the east. It will be open on Sunday as I will be preparing for our Regional on Friday.

HOW AND WHY I SELECT PLANTS TO INTRODUCE

This is a subject close to my heart - Why & how I choose to introduce flowers. It is always personal for me. Hardy for my zone, straight scapes, lots of blooms, clean color with sparkle, and most important — will I walk across my gardens to see the flower and when I do, does it make me smile? It takes a few years to see what the plant does but in the first two years I usually know if the plant is good. Next, is it good enough...meaning does it look different and if I have to consider too long...it isn’t good enough. Would I purchase the flower myself? Is this plant an improve-ment? Below is one that has been selected for 2018. For a small hybridizer like myself it is the love of the flowers. The work is hard but stimulating for me. It feeds my artistic & creative nature. I will tell you more about how I choose to introduce plants.

This seedling #11NR289B (Supreme Scream x FreeWheelin’) was planted in 2011 and will be an introduction for 2018. The name is pending — Attitude With Gratitude. 42” tall, really large flower at 11”, rebloomer, 15–18 buds, and all scapes stand straight up to the sky and set pods. (Remember when you are measuring your flower, it is from petal to sepal.) I usually take my measurements in the early evening. I feel I get a truer measurement, and I take several measurements so I can get an average. Measure only the part of the flower that is flat, and not hanging down.

Why did I choose this specific plant? It caught my at-tention the first bloom. But in that cross there were several that were nice and so I needed to watch and see which of these new seedlings would show me

why I should take another look next summer. I took the best of the seedlings in this cross and moved them the 3rd year. There were 5 different plants.

The weak seedlings died or were removed from the field the second summer. Now I look for consis-tency in plant habit. Are the flowers clear with no spotting? Do all of the flowers look the same? How are the flowers placed on the scape? Did the plant bounce back and increase well? (Sometimes you can get a piece of another seedling when you dig and move plants to line them out.) The next two years makes the difference on hardiness, recovery from the move, plant habit, and what I call ‘flower power’ scapes – bud count and not leaning. Standing tall is a must for me. Iowa has a lot of wind almost every day. If they have nice flowers I want them looking at me… like Humphrey Bogart said, “here is looking at you kid” in Casablanca. I can just hear Bogart’s voice when I am checking scapes.

Beside my notes, I take pictures of all the plants I flag each summer. This gives me a year by year confirma-tion of what the plant is doing in my garden. I will now show you pictures of all the information on this plant. Your camera sometimes catches things you don’t see.

NEBRASKA2018 started out with our Winter Social which feeds everyone’s hun-ger for daylilies and friends. The room was abuzz with conversation because it has been some time since some of us had seen each oth-er. We needed to share our stories from last summer and hopes for this year’s daylily season.

Members always look forward to the May meeting when the club plants are distributed and the 1st auction of the year happens. Short-ly after this the Spring into Spring happens at the Lauritzen garden and that is always an exciting time to meet new people interested in daylilies and for the club to earn money for our scholarship.

The July meeting will be a bit dif-ferent this year. We will be touring the OPPD’s Arboretum and then treated to a presentation (air con-ditioned) given by 2 members that live 300 miles from our meeting areas. This should be a real treat for everyone to check out these gardens. We will also be holding the annual flower show with great competition and color.

To close the year we will have Joel Poston from Pleasant Valley Gar-dens give a presentation of his pro-gram and l am sure he will include some pictures of his farm life. We will end this meeting auctioning Joel’s Intro’s.
