F or all of you that came to the Winter Gathering,

THANK YOU for your participation. If you did not come, you missed a fabulous auction and the effervescent Paul Owens.

Spring is coming, but not as fast as we hope. It has been the coldest, longest winter here in Florida. Most everything froze, even down in Mi-ami. As I write this, there are signs of spring here with warmer weather. It hit 81 today.

As your Director, I have a new job, along with my old one of Display Garden Chair. I am now the AHS En-dowments Chair. So if you, or your club, want to give a donation, either as a gift, or in memory or to honor a person, you now send it to me. View the AHS website, www.daylilies.org

for instructions. Donations can also be made by PayPal.

The Mabel Matthews Scholarship is also part of my job, I am still taking applications even though the deadline was moved up to April 1st this year and will remain April 1st in the future. See the AHS site or there is informa-tion listed on the E-News section of the site.

If you are not getting the E-News, sign up for it. It comes periodically with updates on what's going on the AHS world between Board meet-ings.

AHS is looking for a new Regis-trar and qualifications are listed on the E-News page. If you are interested, send your information to John Holland, AHS Vice President, [email protected]

Soon it will be Convention time and I will be off to Valdosta. Call or email me if you have any concerns for the Board. My deadline for the Agenda Book is April 15th.

AHS Database: More photos have been added. It is an ongoing project. www.daylilies.org Click on Database.

I am your AHS Board Member, at your service. Call or email if you have any concerns. The next Board meeting is sooner this year as the National will be in May. My deadline for the Agenda Book is April 15th. Mary Lou [email protected] 316-755-1964

B y the time you read this, spring should finally

have arrived. Not the “calendar” spring, this has already past, but the real thing. We did very little in the garden last fall to put it to bed. Most years we cut back excess daylily foli-age as well as the peonies and brushy/woody plant material that does not offer the birds any seed heads for fall and winter. In 2009 however, we

played instead. We took our new Mini Cooper convertible on many road trips and just goofed off!

Now we are paying for the fun with so much to do in the gardens. I’m not sure if the extra foliage on the daylilies was good or bad for them. I finally got all the daylilies uncovered from their own foliage and the leaves that had blown into the beds as well. The evergreens and a few semi-evergreens are looking a little mushier than years we cleaned better in the fall. But, given the length and harsh-ness of the past winter, the cover may have been good protection for them. I

do not think we lost any plants as yet. Even the ones planted very late in the fall (daylilies we just had to have at the last minute) did not heave due to the freezing and thawing over winter. Time will tell on the mushy cultivars to see it they will recover or not. This past winter was a true test of the har-diness of all cultivars in our area.

We all should have plenty of deep moisture for the gardens due to the heavy snows in most areas of our Re-gion. Let’s hope no areas have gotten too much and cause flooding.

We are looking forward to the Regional Summer Meeting in St.

Louis. All new gardens on this year’s tours, at least none that have been on the previous tours. This should be an exciting event again. St. Louis is a fun town and the members there are always wonderful hosts. Several clubs are planning to join together to travel over. This is a great idea to get members who might not be able to drive themselves and to join forces to reduce the cost to get there. Check with your club officers to see if one

of the busses will be available to you. You may also want to carpool with friends to make the trip.

We had a great time at the Win-ter Gathering in February. Atten-dance was down from the past couple of years but we suspected that was due to the poor state of the economy. I know in our own area many people were on temporary layoffs or cau-tious about spending due to concerns of layoff or company closures. We

missed those of you who could not attend for whatever reasons and hope we will see you this summer.

Let’s hope 2010 is the beginning of recovery and look forward to it as we do every spring in our gardens. New color, new hope and new vitality will abound and our gardens and lives will flourish again.

Steve Amy AHS Region 11 President

Ann Large Regional Publicity Director

T he winter of 2010 is a thing of the past and I’m

sure all of Region 11 has exhaled with a sigh of relief. I don’t recall a longer winter with so many sun-less days. I can stand a little cold but I need sun-shine.

Please check the AHS website www.daylilies.org for the Region 11 2010 Popularity Poll. Voting online is so easy. If you’re like me, I take the Popularity Poll with me when visiting gardens and attending conventions

during the summer. I have a copy of our region’s poll in a word document that only takes up one page. If you’d like a copy, just email me at ab-large@sbc global.net. A copy has also been included here on page 5. The editors will be publishing the paper ballot in the July issue of Mo-Kan-OK. Again, the poll is similar to last year’s poll with the top vote getters from the 2009 poll and with 5 write-in nominations. Don’t forget the dead-line is September 1, 2010. Sure would be nice to increase our voting percent-age….come on Region 11!

If your club is having an AHS ac-credited show or simply a display, be sure your club’s reporter announces the show dates in the Mo-Kan-Ok. Shows are a great way to see the latest and greats award winners all together in one place. Shows generate excite-ment and interest in our flowers. Plan on attending a show near your loca-tion.

I look forward to seeing you dur-ing the summer conventions. Plan on attending a meeting or convention…it just might change your life!

S teve thanked everyone for attending, and especially

the great speakers. Thanks to Paul Owen for the great job as auctioneer and everyone who bought and donated plants. We made $6599.00 from the auction and Marian Quinlan donated $1.00 to round it off to $6600.

Steve awarded Elaine Holmstrom the service award that she won at Na-tional in 2009. She had not been pre-sent for any local event to receive the honor in person before this meeting

Elaine talked about the need for Exhibition Judges and how to become an Exhibition Judge.

Steve awarded $100 gift certifi-cate to Ann Redmon for purchasing

the most daylilies at the WG. The award was given by Simonton Nurser-ies.

Mary Lou told everyone that the National Registrar’s position is open and Michael Bouman is going to apply for the position. She told members to contact Rebecca Board if they have applied for registration and have not received an answer on a name. Mary

Lou announced 2011 is in Baton Rouge, 2012 is Columbus, Ohio and 2013 is back in Minnesota. The need for more regions to step up and ask to host a national was discussed as well as the need for local clubs to step up and host a regional event.

Paul Owen had re-entered the room and he was given a round of ap-plause and thanked for all his effort and energy in doing the auction in a severe time scrunch. Steve thanked Connie Snow for being the liaison with the hotel again this year. He thanked Nan Ripley and Lois Hart as well as Paul Owen for putting on terri-fic programs.

Steve talked about the internet auction and how club presidents

should work with members who do not understand how to donate plants to the auction and ship the plants when auction is finished.

Ron Azzanni invited everyone to Saint Louis this summer, June 25, 26, & 27th. Patti Waterman invited eve-ryone to Columbia for the 2011 Re-gional on June 24, 25 & 26. The re-gional in 2012 is going to be in KC.

Lois Hart discussed the 2010 Eureka Reference Guide. She said it had gone from 97 vendors several years ago and dropped to 60 some vendors a couple years ago and this year had about 23 vendors. She rec-ommended clubs not use the Eureka to base their prices on for club sales be-cause there are so few sellers in the

Eureka. She felt it did not give a good price comparison any longer even if you could even find the plants listed. There is a survey that is being sent out regarding how you feel the Eureka Guide can be improved.

Robin Calderon, Helen Jones and Dan White have been presented by Steve Amy as the Nominating Com-mittee to select a Regional President for the 2011-2012 election. Dave Nis-wonger made a motion to accept them and it was approved by acclamation.

The Meeting adjourned at 11:45 p.m.

Jane Amy for Andrea Weaver, Secretary

O n February 10, 2010, I opened a note to Steve Amy regarding the Treasurer's Report (printed

elsewhere in this issue of the MOKANOK) to be pre-sented at the Winter Gathering in February with the follow-ing comment:

“I sure wish I could be present at the Winter Gathering to praise the clubs for their donations that resulted in the $2,000 gain. Of course, Harry and Sharron should also be praised for limiting the cost of the MOKANOK.”

It has been a few years since we finished the year with a gain that provided a fairly optimistic outlook for the fu-ture. The efforts of the Gregorys to contain the cost of the MOKANOK was important, but I want to recognize others who contributed to the positive finish.

Financially, the following benefactors donated cash directly to Region 11 for the purposes indicated. Memorials: Wichita Daylily Club for Louie Chestnut Michael Bouman for Dorothy Whatley Gr. St Louis Daylily Soc. for Jennifer Wilson MOKANOK: Ozark Daylily Club Flint Hills Daylily Society Topeka Daylily Society Bluestem Daylily Society Central Oklahoma Hemerocallis Society Wichita Daylily Club Greater St Louis Daylily Society Prairie Winds Daylily Society Central Missouri Hemerocallis Society

Operations: MO-KAN Daylily Society Flint Hills Daylily Society Amy challenge: Michael Bouman

Further, I do not want to omit the 15 donors to the Internet Auction who donated plants and services that were provided to 42 successful bidders on 151 plants. Without their support the results for the year would be significantly different. Andrea Weaver, Carol Mock, Cathy Minkler, Helen Ad-ams, David Hoffman, Lois Hart, Loreta Knoche, Mary Lou Lundblade, Mary Woolsey, Prairie Winds Daylily Society, Al Roderick, Harry and Sharron Gregory, Arlie & Nancy Tempel, Steve & Jane Amy, & Wichita Daylily Club

Last, you can find the list of officers and committee members who donate their time to Region 11. Thanks for your support. Jim PS: I'll use these few lines to ask for your dona-tions for the 2010 Internet Auction by June 30, 2010. As you are rearranging your garden, please set a few plants aside for the auction.

Jim Mueller Treasurer

Region 11 Auction

Send Jim Mueller your donation list by June 30 to get them in the 2010 Internet Auction.

A nd the list goes on. Thanks to our leaders and to our members.

A coincidence? The day I received a friendly reminder from Harry and Sharron about this piece being due I re-ceived the AHS Awards and Honors ballot. (I hadn’t even remembered what cultivars I had sent in for consideration for the ballot.) Lois Hart had also received her ballot and wasted no time sending me a list of Region 11 cultivars listed. (Thank you Lois) I noted Region 11 had cultivars in every major award category and in four of the special class award categories including the Stout Silver Medal. (The AHS awards and honors committee also may submit names) There were only cultivars from three living hybrid-izers listed (plus five deceased) from our region. (I may have not counted accurately.) Bob Scott blew Dave Nis-wonger and I out of the water with his 19 cultivars on the ballot.

I hope and trust the primary goal is not to win awards! However, The more awards that a region’s hybridizers win doesn’t hurt our region’s national status. If you are not a garden judge to vote the ballot please become one. A new revised “Judging Daylilies Handbook” is now available online at the AHS website. That is but one place to learn about becoming a garden and an exhibition judge.

Now that AHS has raised the bar to winning an Honor-able Mention award (the first rung of the awards ladder and about the only one for which a hybridizer may nominate), it will be harder for our region’s hybridizers to win this cru-

cial ‘first’ award. The number of votes required has in-creased from ten to fifteen! They still must be from four different regions. As you can see the secret is distribution as well as quality. Hybridizers - Again I plea; Nominate your best cultivars when they have been registered/introduced for three years AND have been distributed. Sending potential cultivars to National and Regional Meetings is a must. In other words get them seen by judges growing in gardens in other regions (as well as our own). There are other ways to get votes of which you may have heard but I question the ethics of some of these strategies.

Still, there were 20 Award of Merit candidates listed for hybridizers in our region. These must have won Honorable Mention awards in the last three years so the glass is only half empty. We can do better by supporting our own hybrid-izers and by our hybridizers doing better introducing and distributing their cultivars. I’ll admit when I get a request for a plant I check the AHS Roster to see if the person is a garden judge and take that into consideration when choos-ing and sending ‘extras’ particularly if the person is from another region. I don’t believe this violates any ethics stan-dards – it is just good marketing.

With the last AHS Journal came the Popularity Poll (2009) results. Even in our own region, cultivars in our own gardens by our own hybridizers were not ‘popular’. This poll is open to all members and is a stinging slap against our own hybridizers. Not very encouraging to those who might want to hybridize. Imagine going to a ball game and not rooting for the home team. Can you face the play-

THE SEEDLING PATCH By Bob Tankesley-Clarke,

Hybridizer Liaison

Spring 2010. This could be a propitious decade for our region. We have: *many up and coming hybridizers working with the Daylily now--in all three of our states. *new local clubs to promote and support their work. *a region with renewed consciousness of the work and diversity of hybridizing. *Hybridizer Workshops and meetings at regional events (Winter Gathering and Summer Re gional) have been very well attended with good participation. *the Oscie Whatley Seedling Award instituted. (Won already by Jerry Mix and Dan White.) *lists of Hybridizers to encourage garden visits. *cultivar location guides to Hybridizers plants.

Page 9: Spring 2010 MOKANOK Daylily · 2011. 4. 2. · Region 11 American Hemerocallis Society Spring 2010 MOKANOK Daylily Meet Us in St. Louis June 25 - 27

ers after the game? I was ashamed for our region and our hybridizers.

I am concentrating this year on selecting from previ-ous seedlings and (again) trying NOT to make new crosses. This is hard to do! when in the garden ‘evaluating the whole plant’ including the flower(s). It sometimes seems a bother marking for replanting and future possible registration but it needs to be started for eventual registra-tion (the naming is fun), distribution/introduction, and nominating for the ballot. By the time all of this is done I may have a good number of plants of the cultivar. New cultivars that have been acquired are so tempting to use when they flower the first time, but I must resist to main-tain the ‘line breeding’ concept that I believe gives the most consistent results. Unless, of course, you have unlim-ited good space and lots of time and energy to follow through – then continue out-crossing to your hearts con-tent. Even Russian roulette has limited options, the ge-netic possibilities are seemingly still endless even with line breeding. I have seen hybridizers use the shotgun ap-proach putting the pollen of a promising seedling or won-derful cultivar on nearly everything in another cross – however I have not seen the results. It is a good start for a line program probably. The next generation could be quite

promising either through back crossing or sibling seedling cross. (too scientific and labor intensive for me)

Another place to begin the winnowing process is by guesting seedlings in regional tour gardens! I wrote on this in my last ‘Patch’. There may be some at the regional in St. Louis this summer. I welcome them for the regional tour gardens in 2011 in Colombia. Contact Bob McConnell who is in charge of guest cultivars and me for guest seedlings in Colombia and we will see which tour gardens have room for guest plants. They will be labeled and returned (as the sender wishes) after the tours. This is a good time to send them. I would suggest you send some seedlings you may be considering registering as well as guest cultivars of your own that you want to get seen. (There will be lots of judges at the regional tour). I find it instructive to see my own seedings growing in other gardens, if possible, before regis-tering.

If you want this series of ‘chats on hybridizing in Re-gion 11’ to continue – please let me know what topics you want to have our breeders discuss. Hybridizers – let your thoughts be known via this venue. Write me or Steve Amy and we will get your views on Daylily subjects known.

Never forget: SUPPORT REGION 11 HYBRIDIZ-ERS!

The Greater St. Louis Daylily Society is excited to be hosting the 2010 Region 11 summer meeting and garden tours. “OVER THE RIVER and THROUGH THE WOODS” a St. Louis Daylily Adventure…June 25, 26 & 27, Hilton St. Louis Frontenac.

The theme indicates that our tours will take you over the Mississippi and through the woods to our tour

gardens. These tour gardens have not been on previous Region 11 or AHS tours. New gardens for our Region 11 friends to enjoy, each garden has a great selection of daylilies, many 2009 & 10, along with other compan-ion plants.

A great St. Louis Daylily adventure is being planned for all interests. The hotel is across the street from

one of St. Louis’ great shopping experiences. An expanded boutique with a good variety of vendors and educa-tional seminars are planned for Saturday afternoon, Friday night auction will have many desired daylilies, hos-pitality room will be available to socialize and meet Region 11 friends Friday after the auction and Saturday after the banquet. Karol Emmerich will entertain us at the banquet. Saturday lunch will be at Villa Marie Winery.

The Greater St Louis Daylily Society has taken a bus to the last few summer meetings. Along the way our

bus has stopped and picked up other Region 11 members to fill our bus. We hope other daylily clubs from the western side of the region will do the same this year. The bus trip is a cost effective and green way to travel with the other benefit of getting to socialize and really get to know people from other clubs. Realizing that St. Louis is a good travel distance for all coming to our regional, the Sunday schedule is being shortened to allow for an earlier business meeting and home departure.

We invite and look forward to having a large number of Region 11 members “Meet Us in St. Louis” and

enjoy a St Louis Daylily Adventure.

KINDER PLACE GARDENS….Jo Ann & Dan White HOME of the “YARD SALE QUEEN”

Kinder Place Gardens, an AHS Display Garden, is located just 15 minutes east of the St. Louis Arch and the Mississippi River. Daylilies, perennials, shade, woodland and waterside plants are displayed in 26 garden

venues on three acres carved out of Civil War Captain Jacob Kinder’s homestead. A red barn built in the 1860’s is the focal point of the property. The garden is bordered by a lake to the south, woods to the west, horse farm and stables to the north, and the brick Italianate home built by Jacob Kinder to the east. Dan and Jo Ann White have been antique collectors and dealers for over 30 years and have used many garden antiques, benches, bird baths, statues, iron gates and fence sections to ac-cent their garden. Their love for birds has resulted in the crea-tion of bird houses made from old barn boards. A number of birdhouse villages are scattered throughout their gardens.

Primary daylily interest is in spiders and narrow and unusual forms; however, all daylily forms will be on display. Over 600 cultivars and 15,000 plus seedlings will provide a good variety of daylilies for all to enjoy. There is a good variety of southern day-lilies, but the majority of daylilies are from northern hybridizers. Hybridizing efforts will be on display showing raised beds where seeds are planted annually in April, four years of lined-out seed-lings, evaluation beds of selected seedlings, along with 14 culti-vars registered since 2006.

A special display bed will feature cultivars of 16 Greater St.

Louis Daylily Society region 11 hybridizers….At least one culti-var of. A. Apsher, M. Bouman, D. Cookson, J. Eiseman, K, Krattli, R. McClarren, T. McClarren, C. Mock, C. Plahn, D. Plahn, B. Riggs, K. Riggs, E. Roderick, O. Whatley, D. White, and J. White will be displayed in this bed.

Dan has been a backyard hybridizer since 2001, working primarily with narrow and unusual forms with teeth and edges. In 2006 he named his first registration YARD SALE QUEEN, in honor of Jo Ann‘s passion for yard sales. That passion has resulted in her making a room in the historic barn a “green” garden and designer resale room open only when the garden is on tour. Jo Ann made her first cross just prior to her illness. This cross produced only five seeds, and each seed resulted in a very nice seedling…”TIKI FLAME”, her first introduction, was registered in the fall of 2009. This is not strictly a hybridizers’ garden. There is plenty to see and enjoy. The Whites are looking forward to seeing all of you in their garden in June.

The Garden of Pat Kiesel and Larry Gooden – Hillsboro, MO

The Gooden garden was created as an alter-native garden to Lindy Farms in Anna, Illinois, which was on tour at the 2004 National. The close proximity to St. Louis made it more desir-able than the long distance to the farm in Anna. Then “Larry’s Obsession” took hold and a Col-lector’s Garden was created. Daylily after day-lily found their way to the new garden and the hillside is now blooming with a few thousand, (including Larry’s namesake). The garden sits on a hillside and is comprised of several areas – sun, shade and in-between.

Larry’s interest in daylilies was started by Alice Riggs, who encouraged him to start a daylily garden; and that he did in a huge way. He now has over 2500 different varieties and strives to acquire the newest introductions each year. Dan Hansen’s introduction “Crazy Larry” is another daylily attributable to Larry and his gardens.

Be sure and look for the “Oscie Whatley Memorial Seedling Bed” at this garden and vote for your favorite.

Poos Garden

The diminutive front yard will not prepare you for the 1.3 acre of landscape behind the home of Dave and Joan Poos. Starting its transition in 2001, the garden has evolved from a typical suburban yard with a few perennial beds on the property’s border to its present form.

Grass paths meander between raised beds allowing close examina-tion of a bit more than 1000 daylily varieties. In the rear of the yard is a mass of daylilies (typically 3,000 plus) representing an active Hemero-callis hybridizing program. Both sides of the yard are framed by large oaks with under-plantings of dogwood, redbud, azaleas, and approxi-mately 750 varieties of hosta. For shade plant enthusiasts, walk under the arbor and continue on the wood chip path. Along this shaded walk you will find many varie-ties of Epimedium, Heuchera, European Ginger, Blood Root, Varie-gated Solomon Seal, Trillium, Hellebores, Hardy Begonia, and varieties of fern, hydrangeas and other shade tolerant plants.

Continuing past the tool shed, you will

find a vegetable garden with an accompany-ing dwarf fruit tree orchard, raspberry patch, and strawberry beds. If time allows on the way back from the vegetable garden, stop and sit a while in the Adirondack Chairs and enjoy a panoramic view of beds of our fa-vorite flower.

Open Gardens

Kathy and Dan Krattli - O’Fallon, MO If you're only wanting to see 100's of the latest daylily cultivars, you'll probably be disappointed if you stop to see the garden of

Dan and Kathy Krattli. But you might be glad you stopped if you just enjoy walking through a beautiful garden that also includes a lot of Kathy's hybridizing efforts.

If you're heading east towards St. Louis, it's almost on your way to the hotel. It's just 2 miles north on Main St. from Hwy 70, taking O'Fallon's M & K exit. Then a left turn at Hwy P, then another left at the first street (Capri) and we're the 6th house on the right (312).

Diana and Craig Plahn - Kirkwood, MO

Diana and Craig have created a fine example of a terraced garden carved out of the hillside along Sugar Creek. In 1993 daylilies became part of the landscape with hostas being added a couple of years later. Today there are over 400 named cultivars of daylilies and numerous seedlings under observation along with some 800 plus registered hostas. The garden also has a collection of Japanese maples and conifers along with numerous perennials to complement the landscape.

John Eiseman - Ladue, MO Just left as a mystery. Maps to the open gardens are on the website www.safehavengardens.com/2010_regional. html

David Hoffman – Woodland Way Garden Located in north St. Louis County, beautiful Pasadena Hills is on the National Historic Register of historic older homes. David’s home and garden is situated on a typical residential lot and the garden makes use of every square foot of space.

The multi-leveled garden has stone walls and paths that help show off the twelve- hundred, or so, different daylily cultivars, which include all the different forms with numerous recent introductions along with a few old favorites. Included are cultivars from Region 11 hybridizers, as well as others. You’ll also see many hostas and other perennials along with flowers growing in containers.

David believes that one of the advantages of cultivating a smaller

garden is having the time to give each and every plant the tender loving care it deserves and to bring out all its potential. David looks forward to meeting all of you and showing off his Woodland Way Garden.

R egion 11 has a unique database available to Garden Judges, hybridizers, plant buy-

ers or anyone interested in finding cultivars introduced in Region 11. The database is an excel spreadsheet found on the Region 11 page of the AHS website – it is at the very top of the page. The cultivars are listed by hybridizer on the first sheet and alphabetically by plant on the second sheet. Sheet 3 shows how to sort by individual gardens.

Garden judges can search by daylily name such as H.Ram and find that nine gardens are listed where the plant can be seen or purchased. Since it is important for Garden Judges to see plants growing within our region this database allows them to search for a loca-tion close by to view the plant.

If you are a hybridizer you can use the database to see who is growing your cultivar. If someone in Kan-sas wants to see your plant growing you can direct them to Amy’s, Hittle’s, Flint Hills, etc.

If you are interested in purchasing a certain Region 11 plant you can use the database to see who is grow-ing it and call to see if it is display only or for sale. Anyone interested in historical daylilies can sort the list by registration date and then look for older plants. Also if you are looking for the 2009 registrations you can sort by the date column.

More participation by members is needed. You do not need to sell to be listed as a “garden” for viewing. If you grow a large number of Region 11 plants and would not mind having Garden Judges visit, please send your plant list to Lois Hart at [email protected] to be added to the grower section. You do not need to be an AHS Dis-play Garden to participate.

Please take a few minutes and check out this data-base of 2200 cultivars and learn about all the hybridiz-ers and their daylilies registered from 1947 to today.

REGION 11 HYBRIDIZER WEBSITE

Several Region 11 hybridizers have started a web-

site and they would like to encourage other hybridizers

to add their gardens to the site. The contact person is [email protected] Dan White, Dave Niswon-ger, Andrea Weaver and Bob Scott are presently par-ticipating. Anyone in Region 11 can add a link for $10. Kathy Kelly has the information on options and costs.

REGION 11 HYBRIDIZER FORUM

The hybridizer committee has worked for five

years to develop a list of all current and former hybrid-izers. The email list is very outdated and we would like to get current addresses so we can send out news releases. If you are actively hybridizing please send your current email address to Lois Hart at [email protected] If you no longer want to be on the “current” list, please let Lois know.

MOKAN DAYLILY CLUB TO HOST 2012 RE-GIONAL

June 29-July 1 will be the dates for the 2012 Re-

gional in Kansas City. Oscie Whatley Seedling Bed entries need to be

mailed this summer. The plants can be sent to Elroy Knoche, 26901 S.

Stockman Road, Harrisonville, MO 64701. One seed-ling per hybridizer goes into the Oscie Whatley bed. Remember to send the seedling number for Junior Ci-tation information.

Any hybridizer wanting to send additional seed-lings to be evaluated or plants introduced from 2003 to 2010 that are eligible for the Region 11 Hybridizer award should mail those to Lois Hart, P O Box 519, Louisburg, KS 66053. To be eligible for the award the clump must have at least 3 fans so it is important to get the plants to Kansas City this summer.

I think this is everything. Please let me know if you need more details for any of the articles…Lois

Bluestem Daylily Society By Faye Yoder

The Bluestem Daylily Society is on our way to having a

great year! Our first event in 2010 was having a booth at the Salina Home and Garden Show in February. We had a great response and gained some new members as well. And I think everyone who helped had a good time. I know I did – it's not a hardship to talk about my favorite flower!!!!!

Next on the BDS agenda is our plant sale. The date has been changed from the 1st to the 8th of May, same location. (check website)

Work is proceeding on the daylily display garden in Oxbow Park with a work day scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd. If all goes as planned we will plant the first two beds, around 50 day-lilies per bed. Plans are to have six beds, with one bed desig-nated a seedling bed. By the time we are finished, we should have 200+ daylilies in this garden. Our goal is to eventually have it designated an AHS display garden. Next – daylily city? Who knows, it could happen!

Our June 3rd meeting will be a potluck supper and plant swap in Oxbow Park. Last year we had a plant swap and every-one had so much fun we decided to do it again. What made it even more fun was that some members brought gardening books, fresh eggs, homemade jellies and jams, shrubs, etc. It was really fun to watch the trading going on and trying to guess who would end up with what!

July 10th will be our show in the Central Mall in Salina. This will be another learning curve for us as nearly 100% of our membership has no experience or have even been to a daylily show.

We have other meetings and programs scheduled, and for more details check our website out at www.hybridizer.net/bluestemdaylilysociety.html

Visitors are ALWAYS welcome! Meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at the Carver Center, 315 N. 2nd St., in Salina, 6:30 pm unless otherwise stated on our website. The May 6th meeting will be held at my house, 107 W. 2nd, Brook-ville. No program is planned for that meeting as we will be go-ing over the final preparations for the sale on May 8th, but you are still welcome to come and join us. (Be warned, we might put you to work)!!!

Central Missouri

Hemerocallis Society By Cathy M. Turner

Our first program of the year was by Tim Rost Landscaping from here in Columbia. Tim gave us ideas, pointers and examples of landscaping plus he had pictures of a very impressive multi-year ongoing project down around the Osage River.

We had several members at the Winter Gathering that also made it to our Sunday meeting. Good things were reported.

Our April 11th meeting will feature J.D. Stadler with Celes-tial Daylilies www.celestialdaylilies.com out of North Carolina. That’s at 1:30 at 1012 Route UU, Columbia, MO (just West of Columbia). Route UU is Southeast of the exit. The Extension Center is the first Building on the left on UU.

Our June 13th meeting will be Preparing and Designing for our July 10th Daylily show at the Columbia Regional Library http://www.dbrl.org/ where you can pick-up maps for the open gardens on the 11th of July—a sneak preview of things you might see for our 2011 Regional. Participants AND visitors are welcome!

Our gathering for great food and our club daylily sale picnic will be Friday August 20 at Cosmo park then our sale at our Co-lumbia Farmers Market http://www.columbiafarmersmarket.org/ will be Saturday morning August 21. Come early, we sell out before the market ends.

A preview for this fall, please join us for hybridizer Nicole Harry on October 10th plus it’s our members slide show of their new daylilies.

Red Wine Romance by Kennebrew was one of the beauti-ful daylilies presented in a slide show by Jeanne Mapes at our Feb. 20th meeting. Her pictures were taken at the AHS National Convention in Florida. Although I thought my appetite for spring needed no whetting, I found myself even more eager for its beauty. Thank you, Jeanne.

We were happy to have Ken Begnaud from Lafayette, LA, present a program at our March 19th meeting. He gave a slide presentation and talk on his hybridizing efforts and daylily intro-ductions at his Beau Basin Gardens. He certainly has some beau-tiful introductions! Oh, my!

In April we had our annual spring daylily sale. An educational meeting will be held on Friday, May 21st,

7:00p.m. at Will Rogers Garden Center with distribution of plants-for-members daylilies.

Flint Hills Hemerocallis

Society By Ruby Zabel

Our first meeting for 2010, February 1, featured Rita Arnold from Arnold’s Greenhouse and Garden Center near LeRoy, Kan-sas. Rita shared a PowerPoint presentation of Sun Loving Per-ennials offered at Arnold’s Greenhouse as well as some helpful tips on plant care.

2010 business included:

Recommended guidelines for payment of travel expenses and/or honorariums for Guest Speakers and a new line item in our budget.

Discussion of Bylaws regarding Daylily Drawings resulted in a change in practice for 2010. ALL (dues paid) members will be individually eligible to win in daylily drawings at meetings, regardless of whether another member in their family member-ship has already won a daylily at that meeting. A proposed amendment to our Bylaws for 2011 would offer Single member-ships only (no Family).

Future discussion may include the benefits of a Flint Hills Daylily Society website to archive minutes, yearbooks, etc and allow access by all members or the general public.

2010 meeting dates include (Monday) February 1, April 19, June 7 and August 2. Other planned events include a Members’ Gardens Tour in July, Daylily Bloom display at the Manhattan Town Center Mall in July, our money-maker Daylily Sale at the Farmers’ Market in the Fall (with a pre-sale potluck for mem-bers only), and a Fall Banquet typically held in September or October. Plus Daylily Drawings at each and every meeting! Pro-spective members are always welcome.

FHDS meets on the campus of Kansas State University in Throckmorton Hall, Room 2002. in Manhattan, KS. Throck-morton Hall is located on the northeast corner of Claflin Road and Denison Avenue. Parking is available 1/2 block south. Meeting time is 7:00 p.m. with 6:30 to 7:00 set aside as social/sharing time. For more information you may contact me at [email protected]

Sixty five were in attendance Feb. 26th for our first meeting of 2010. This is always a pot-luck social get-together-type gath-ering with a short business meeting. We are a growing club and were happy to welcome several new members. We were brought up to date on all the plans for the Region 11 meeting to be held here in St. Louis June 25th – 27th. We hope that many of you are planning to join us here! It will be fun and we’re looking for-ward to seeing old daylily friends and making some new ones!

For our March 19th meeting we will have Dan Trimmer give our program.

On April 16th we will have Bob Faulkner here to give his program on patterned eyes.

Our May 14th meeting will be our “Member’s Only” auc-tion.

And we hope to see many of you at our Region 11 meeting here in June.

August 28th will be our annual club picnic at Tower Grove Park.

We will be having our annual daylily sale on Sat. Sept. 11th at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.

We meet at the Creve Coeur Government Center, 300 N. New Ballas Rd., Creve Coeur, Mo. Our regular meetings are at 7:30 on the 3rd Friday of the month, Feb. through April, and Sept. and Oct.

Ozark Daylily Club By Bev Long

Beginning in March, club members led by Cliff Garland, our

Garden Coordinator, and his family, have worked to clean and mulch our plants in the Daylily Garden at Nathanial Greene/Close Memorial Park. It appears that all of our plants, including new plants are growing well and hopefully will have many beau-tiful flowers this summer.

Building is continuing on the 12,700 square foot Botanical Center which will provide a centerpiece for visitors to the Gar-dens when it is completed. The Center is expected to be com-pleted in Fall 2010 at a cost of $3 million.

The following note was sent to members of the Friends of the Garden by George Deatz:

New addition to the video package: I just looked at the new Daylily Garden video here http://www.youtube.com/user/hiltrudwebber?feature=mhw4#p/u/3/1gAf3syM6EE

The video of the daylily display at Close Memorial Park 2400 S. Scenic Springfield, MO is a very nice addition to the group. The Ozark Daylily club works very hard to keep the Day-lily Garden looking it's best.

Our meetings are held on the second Saturday in February, April, June, August, October, and December. Meetings are held

from 3-5 pm at the Springfield Library Center, 4653 S Camp-bell.

Our April 10th meeting will feature a program from club member, Dr William Roston. He will share information about the Butterfly House, hosta, and other information related to the ongoing development of the Botanical Center.

Many members of our club are looking forward to attending the St Louis Regional Meeting in June.

Also in June we will have our annual tour of local mem-bers’ gardens.

Mo-Kan Daylily Society By Judith Durham

Our gardening year ended with a Christmas Party meeting in December. After a pot-luck lunch, we viewed a MS Power-Point slide show provided by the AHS featuring the 2008 Na-tional Convention and Region 3 Gardens. Door prizes were wrapped in holiday paper and the head table was decorated with a huge pink poinsettia. The room was festive with warmth, good food, and beautiful colors. It was a time to reflect on the past daylily season and be thankful for all of our blessings.

2010 dawned cold and cloudy, but our February meeting broke the chill ( for one day ).

Bob Faulkner of Dayton, Ohio was our guest speaker. He presented a program on his hybridizing with patterned day-lilies. Bob started hybridizing in 1995. He has created many beautiful patterned seedlings concentrating primarily on diploid but also has some tets. He will be introducing his first daylilies in 2011.

The MoKan Daylily Society in Kansas City will be hosting the 2012 Regional. Plans are being made to make it a wonderful experience with many new daylilies to view and gardens to en-joy. We are really, really looking forward to Spring and are wishing everyone a great new year in the garden.

Our June meeting will be on Sunday, June 13 at the Garden Center in Loose Park, 52nd and Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO. It is near the Plaza. We always have a potluck at 12:30 followed by the club meeting at 1:30 pm. All are welcome.

Prairie Winds Daylily

Society By Connie Larkin

Our club is off to an exciting 2010, despite a huge breakout of cabin fever! This malady ran rampant with only 2 days of sunshine available per month, for the entire population of gar-deners.

Our Feb. meeting was a huge success. Sharron Gregory showed us how to make a garden notebook. We all look forward to using the ones we made.

People enjoyed visiting our booth at the Wichita Garden Show. We have 2 new members this year.

Harry Gregory will give a program on garden record keeping at our March meeting.

April's program is on the history of the Garden Council, and Botanica's founding.

May 1st is our club sale at Botanica. The May meeting pro-gram is on buying daylilies over the internet.

In June we're having a garden gathering with a program on the hybridizing program of member, Don Franz.

We meet at 7:00 P.M. the 4th Monday of every month at Botanica. All are welcome!

Topeka Daylily Club By Caryn Sheets

The Topeka Daylily Club members met at McFarland's res-taurant on December 4 for their annual Christmas party. After dinner the group enjoyed visiting and playing daylily bingo.

Doug Grimm of Grimm's Garden and Nursery of Hiawatha was invited to speak at our January club meeting. The club members enjoyed hearing about his full service landscaping business and pick your own blueberry patch. He had helpful advice for growing vegetables, flowers and trees in Kansas. He also described his involvement in selecting the champion trees in Kansas.

The majority of the members present at the January meeting expressed their wish to continue the club's contract plant pro-gram.

After enduring a very cold, wet winter with more snow than we've seen for a long time, we are ready to think about spring, our gardens and a summer of beautiful daylilies. Our March meeting will feature Phil Korth of Pine Wood Gardens, Suamico, WI. We are looking forward to hearing from this Zone 4 gardener and learning about his work with cold hardy day-lilies.

The Topeka Daylily Schedule for the remainder of the year is as follows:

• April 10-26 -- Tulip Time Festival. A city and county wide celebration of tulips at Ted Ensley Gardens, Old Prairie Town and Botanical Garden, Doran Rock Gar- den, Downtown Kansas Avenue and Matrot Castle. This festival is supported by area garden clubs and in- cludes volunteers from The Topeka Daylily Club.

• April 27 – Meeting - Club Membership Drive. Bring a friend to the meeting along with photographs of some of your favorite daylilies to show why we get so ex- cited about daylilies.

• May 25 – Meeting - Members Only Plant Auction • May 27-29 – AHS National Convention – Valdosta,

Georgia • June 25-27 – Region 11 Annual meeting & tours, St.

Tulsa Area Daylily Society by Katy Brocksmith

The Tulsa Area Daylily Society gave away nearly $1950 of top of the line Daylily varietals from the noted hybridizer, Pat Stamile. He and his wife Grace are now in retirement but have turned over the reins of the nursery to the Pierces who continue to operate under the business name Floyd Cove Nursery. Please take a moment to visit http://www.floydcove.com/ .

The TADS group has offered these high dollar Daylilies to our members with several good intentions in mind.

It is a great method to raise funds for the group. Since this buying and nesting Daylilies is an on-going process from year to year, it promotes self-sustaining qualities that promise a contin-ued stream of revenue for the club.

Secondary to fund raising, there is an extra benefit in allow-ing members access to new, more expensive plants than they would normally buy. This benefits each participating club mem-ber by keeping them in the loop of the most current Daylily stock available. We read about the Daylily cognoscente but having something in common with them makes one feel involvement in a much larger way.

Records are scrupulously kept which detail how the Day-lilies were divided and distributed.

The grower tends the plants for two summers. At the end of the growing period, the grower keeps two fans and surrenders the increases to the club for the September sale.

Records are kept throughout the process. This is how we generate funds within our TADS organiza-

tion. We have two bare-root sales per year, the first of which is slated June 19th, 2010 at the Tulsa Garden Center. We will in-clude additional information about the event as we draw nearer to that date.

The fall bare-root sale is scheduled for September 11th, same venue. There will be bare-rooted plants and potted Day-lilies to boot! All plants are modestly priced but a “high dollar” table is offered to those with up-scale tastes (and pocket books!)

Tying the Daylily “giveaway” back into the spring/fall sale, we might expect to see such offerings as: Dr. Jerrold Corbett, Doo Wop, Quartz Rainbow, Violet Becomes You, Clear Moun-tain Morning, Raspberry Stitchings, Cosenza, Blue Lake, and Cerise Beauty.

These increases will be the reward of our Daylily “giveaway” program of 2008. If your group is not making use of updating its collective Daylily holdings, please look into it.

Wichita Daylily Club By Marilyn Browne

After another great Christmas dinner to end our year in De-cember, most of us went into hibernation for a not so long Win-ter’s nap.

The Wichita Daylily Club kicked off the new year with an afternoon meeting for a change on February 6th. With a meeting well attended, members brought great new ideas for a year of day-lily activities, and newly elected Vice President, Cindi McMurray, provided an informative program about computer and DVD resources available, including the e-mail “Robin” and day-lily auction websites.

March 3rd through 7th brought participation in the Wichita Garden Show. The Club sponsored a booth and copies of our new brochure were provided to attendees. Several WDC members, including Connie True, Diana Conner, Sherryl Fitzpatrick, and President, Floanna Crowley entered the floral design competition, with

Sherryl and Flo bringing home top honors of the coveted glass sculptures. What a talented group of individuals we have!

March brought birthday celebrations for two of our charter members, Betty Jean Bowlin and Betty Lou Bowlin.

We are now in the planning stages for a busy Spring/Summer, including a trip to Kaw Valley greenhouses in Wamego, KS., a bus trip to Region 11 Convention in St. Louis, and our an-nual Daylily Show which will be held this year on the Fourth of July at Botanica, with the theme: “America the Beautiful”.

Several of our members attended the Winter Gathering in Overland Park, KS. in February and quite a few plan on attending the AHS National Convention in Valdosta, GA. in May. Members are enthusiastic about the upcoming year’s events and the great possibilities for the club in 2010!

We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at Botanica.

A Note from the Editors We are sorry for the lateness of this spring issue. It turns out we have a time management issue related

to the feeling that we had mastered the software we are using! At least we hope to learn from our mistakes and be more prompt in the future. There are no shortcuts.

A big thanks to all who contributed to this issue. We had an abundance of seedlings and new introduc-

tions submitted, leading to adding 4 pages, and we still had to leave some cultivars out. This is our biggest all color issue so hope everyone enjoys all the fabulous photos!
